Can Oprah Help Get Obama into the White House?

By Felix Gilette and Leon Neyfakh, New York Observer. Posted August 18, 2007.

Oprah can get people to like Obama, but can she get people to vote for him?

If you picked it up with a pair of tweezers and plopped it down in a sterile laboratory environment, the conversation which took place between Oprah Winfrey and Barack Obama on Oct. 18, 2006, probably wouldn't look so good under a microscope.

Here were two people with impeccably manicured public images bemoaning the calculated spin of politics. Two professionally driven people paying homage to life outside of work. If you tested the exchange for traces of organic life, the results would probably come back negative.

But thanks to the fertile emotional agar of The Oprah Winfrey Show, the interview was well received. In the end, the proven convention-hall orator walked away with some much-needed small-room credibility. At one point, Ms. Winfrey asked the senator from Illinois about his presidential ambitions. "So if you were ever to run ... would you announce on this show?"

"I don't think I could say no to you," replied Mr. Obama. And a few seconds later: "Oprah, you're my girl."

Ms. Winfrey did not get to break the big news -- but she is definitely Obama's girl, supporting the Illinois senator's presidential bid in her typically big, multiplatform way. And now, the the "My Girl" interchange is campaign-famous.

In what the Internet universe refers to as "meatspace," there's the big Sept. 8 fund-raiser for Mr. Obama -- to be held at her $64 million estate in Montecito, Calif. (Tara II, it's called.)

That's going well: It was apparently so in demand among Democrats that tickets were restricted to the 250 members of Mr. Obama's national finance committee. Each got seven of the coveted $2,300 tickets to sell to friends who want to give the primary-season limit to Mr. Obama -- or who just want to get a look at the talk-show queen's 23,000-square-foot Georgian style mansion, or stroll the 42 acres of ponds, orchards and rustic outbuildings.

But the millions of dollars the event will raise for Mr. Obama is not the most interesting thing Ms. Winfrey has to offer his campaign.

"My money isn't going to make any difference," Ms. Winfrey told Larry King in May. "My value to him, my support of him is probably worth more than any check that I could write."

And, though she told her interviewer that no, she wouldn't be running for office herself, she did admit that with this campaign she was expanding her role in politics.

So, can Ms. Winfrey expand her kingmaking into politics?

"I think this is a celebrity endorsement," said Martin Kaplan, a research professor at the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication and erstwhile White House speechwriter.

Of course she can make people like him. But can she get people to vote for him?

"Most research," Mr. Kaplan said, "says, 'No.'"

But that's just the kind of research many political insiders are eager to see put to the test.

After all, she has gone where no other celebrity has gone. She has, in one category after another -- from the publishing industry to the magazine industry to the charity circuit to Broadway to Hollywood -- made herself a kingmaker with her (literally) trademarked brand of direct marketing.

It's something the Obama campaign is aware of.

"I think Oprah is one of those people that transcends race and class," said Robert Gibbs, the communications director for the Obama campaign, when this reporter caught up with him over the weekend in Chicago. "It's people from all walks of life who see some segment of themselves in her."

"It's one of those endorsements that speaks to so many people," he added. "I think she has proved her marketing ability beyond almost any other person that is in public life to some degree, and obviously we're hopeful that just a little bit of that rubs off on us."

Obama is a good man and could be the best president America ever had. But that doesn't matter in America. Since when has America ever had a president of substance and values? It's a war nation and a racist nation (it's still 1864 to some people in America.) Wake up America! The 'best' candidates don't become presidents - the ones who sell their values to the highest bidder become presidents. If Hitler was around today he'd have a better chance of winning. He liked wars and killing innocent people too - just like King George The Redneck.

Frankly, I think Oprah has already done a lot for Obama just by demonstrating to millions of white Americans who rarely get to know an African American that she's someone they can identify with (sans the ambition and hard work that she cleverly downplays.) She's empathetic and emotionally courageous and struggles with her weight like millions of Americans. Since she's not intellectually pretentious, she takes the curse off reading literary novels for both white and black fans. And, of course, she's wealthy and generous. My (white) daughter, who should have gotten credit for all the Oprah she watched in high school, showed me the line of people waiting to see her show, mostly white suburban women. If Oprah can transfer some of her acceptance to the Obamas (Michelle is also a great asset; she's smart as a whip but with a great sense of humor.) then there are votes to be had. Now we just have to work on Dr. Phil; in the last election he said Bush was a better dad than Kerry because he never divorced.

he really hasn't got what it takes to win in today's political environment. when his 'blackness' is questioned, when he makes political gaffes like mentioning invading Pakistan (shadows of the Iraq invasion, the coming Iran attack), he will be considered a secondary candidate at best. good men don't win the whitehouse. good campaigns do. he will be on the defensive, not a good place for someone who needs to come off as a winner, not a competitor.

I don't read the books she recommends, do you really think I would support a candidate she recommends, let alone vote for him? Since when did any one ever trust the Plantation Owner? And if your going to name an estate "Tara", shouldn't it be in the south?????????

Obama Thumbs Up, Oprah Thumps down

Right now, Obama is my first choice, but I guarantee you it has nothing to do with Oprah. I used to love her, but I have become very disappointed with her in the past few years. She unleashed Dr Phil on the world, who is nothing but a big bag of wind. Sure he spits out a few words of common sense. He is also a sophisticated conman who gets emotionally abusive and berates people when they challenge him. Then there is her weight obsession. Dieting makes people fatter, yet she encourages America to do it again and again. And it is not just weight. I remember seeing a show where she featured thin/average women who weren't glamorous enough. She had them go into glass cages in bright light in the middle of the city so people would guess their ages. Of course people overestimated (no make up sales for sponsors if they looked younger than they appeared.) She actually had the nerve to ask this beautiful 50ish working mom "how could she let herself go like that." (You know, grow older like a normal woman.) Ugh! I don't care how much she tries to empower women. She keeps on sending the message how you look is what is most important which cancels out everything else. And I won't even mention her promoting that crap The Secret.

I am still supporting Obama as of now despite concerns over his use of force in Pakistan. But, it will be in spite of Oprah, not because of it.

--Oprah can affect an outcome. In a nation which fawns on celebrity its silly to wonder whether her pronouncements have an effect. Of course they do! A multitude of people do exactly what Oprah suggests daily. It's called ignorance.

As long as mediocre minds like Oprah have sway, America will never change. I have nothing against her personally, I rather enjoy her. But a culture that lionizes (and pays) such a heavily sponsored talk show host to her fortunes can't be expected to make hard and incisive choices. After all, how valuable are middle brow lessons in conversation? Obama? Bomb Pakistan unilaterally? We are just getting rid of one like that. Damn it, look past the color. Kucinich or Ron Paul anyone?

Whether Oprah endorses Obama makes no difference

to me. I fail to understand why it is that people do so little thinking for themselves that they would vote for someone just because a celebrity supports or promotes them. Quite honestly, from what I have seen of Obama, I think he's a pretty okay guy (and I frankly don't care what color he is) and certainly has potential. I do think though that he is just a bit too inexperienced, hence perhaps coming across as rather hawkish. I don't care what Oprah or any celebrity supports or promotes. I am interested in facts behind what they might give as reasons for their support. I do find it interesting that because someone makes the kind of money and has the position of power and access of an 'Oprah' they are then viewed as an expert on everything. I don't think so.

Oprah is a smart and compassionate woman, a person who has chosen to use her heart, money, intellect, and soul for good instead of evil like those in this administration. I'm glad she's finally come out and endorsed a candidate, perhaps recognizing the dangerous place we are in, where silence brings horrible consequences. Obama has had my vote for years, long before Oprah "influenced" the "ignorant" like me. I hate to imagine what the conservatives will do with her after reading the comments on this "liberal" site. There comes a time when it doesn't matter, you say what you believe and promote what you know is right, in spite of the risk, and perhaps that's why she's risking it now. Whatever it takes, Oprah or God Herself, I hope, for the sake of us all, Obama makes it in. Reading both his books made me realize he is a smart, compassionate, and devoted man, perhaps too good to be a president of the U.S. His name meaning, "the blessed one" may be appropriate for what we need at such a time as this.

It won't matter that Oprah endorses Obama very much. All the smart money remains on Hillary. Hillary also has been picking up considerable steam against Obama due to his recent minor gaffes. Here's what Hillary has that Obama does not:

1. Tons of campaign cash. Millions from banks and insurance companies. They want her because she has proven she can deliver and push pro-business agendas (while double talking that she supports the working class).
Of course, Obama still has quite a bit of cash, he is after all in Congress and still considered "a good investment" by the elites. But, this is only hedging bets when it comes to the Presidential race.

2. 100% AIPAC endorsed. Of course, so is Obama, but Hillary is even more so. Israeli money is behind her and she, as president, will "green light" every Israeli invasion or targeted Israeli killing in the West Bank. Look for more cluster bombs going to Israeli as part of America "supporting her ally. "

3. Hillary of course has Bill. Now, Bill has his detractors, but after Bush II and the collapsing American economy, his popularity has risen again.

4. Hillary has developed better political skills. She is now much less likely than she was years ago to make verbal gaffes or say the truth in an unpackaged way that would get her into trouble. Obama has yet to learn this. A perfect example, she was a big supporter of the Iraqi invasion, but, many Ameicans hardly even know this now due to all the spinning. And, at the same time she spins about Iraq, Hillary can spin that she is "anti-terrorism" much more effectively than Obama, who seems like a "babe in the woods," when it comes to bottom barrel politics.

5. Oprah is starting to be yesterday's news and the masses don't consider her opinions that valuable when it comes to politics. It's just like Brittany, Paris, etc., giving their opinions, who cares?

Of course, we could go on and on. But, Obama will not be the Democratic nominess. That person has already been choosen.

4. Hillary can more easily than Obama be pawned off

She is so sheltered
And out of touch
With the real world
That she never has to deal with it.

She is in the top 1%
And knows nothing about what the other
99% needs!
That’s the problem
We are already being told by the top 1%
What we need.
How can they know that?
It is a failed indifferent system.
We know what we need.
We need a level playing field.
We need the same things they do.
We need to support our families.
We need healthcare.
We need a good job.
We need good schools and a decent place to live.
We need a decent living wage to buy it.
We need representation in Washington
We the People!
If you believe in what Obama stands for,
By all means stand up for him.
But to do it!
Because Oprah says to,
Is wrong.
When we have representatives
That stand up for us
As much as they do,
For Big Money.
We will begin to effect,
Positive change.

Oprah has done a lot of good stuff and I think she is sincere.
She gives and gives and gives as she should considering her wealth, but the fact that she endorses Obama, somehow cheapens the whole process even more than it has already been cheapened.
Overall, Oprah is wonderful but I don't watch her show much because I got tired of her know-it-all attitude. Her up and down weight, where I think she gains weight again within weeks just so that she can do another round of weight loss shows it seems.
EDWARDS IS THE CANDIDATE MOST QUALIFIED. EDWARDS/OBAMA, GREAT TICKET!!

He's more than capable of doing that on his own. He's not your typical sound-bite throwing candidate. Anyone who has taken the time to really inform themselves on his who he is and what he stands for can't help but be blown away by him. The spin-machine and those who fall for it... yet again... do him and the country an injustice.

He'll be another Pelosi and Lieberman.
On the surface that old spit shine looks good but Obama will not be good in weeding out corruption from with in the government. This is where change must happen,. The return to checks and balances and away from secrets and a to a constitution of the people and by the people.

Oprah has nothing to do with it. Having a headline on this blog article, "Can Ophra..." implys progressive all want Obama.

Not in your life though.
As this primary gets into freewheeling I hope people take great care in understanding how the conservative minds work. For if the democrate are to get any power in congress and the presidency they have to win over quite a few republican voters. But will republicans change their vote for a female or black as their president?

Think here. I believe this nation has an undertow of bigotry that runs through it. And regardless of what it will mean for the nation, the country, the United States, I am highly skeptical that there will be enough switchers to redirect this country.

This countries fabric is woven from a vast history of prejudices. Even amonst different shades of white from toe heads to dish water and brunnets people vote for popularity in "looks".

I mean short people or bad hairlines and bad complexions will sway people to make choices other than what might be the best choices for mates or presidents.

It is unfortunate that humans make choices this way. But if we proceed in our choices, understanding this, we can begin to affect change with an expected result. But if we proceed on emotional choices or ideas of what a president is suppose to look like we will continue to remain trapped in tribal groups that don't serve our best interests.

I Vote Kucunich

Crappy article, and even worse comments - where's the money?

Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
In modern politics, it's all about the money, and neither the article nor any of the comments so far discuss this basic issue.

First, let's look at the business-as-usual corporate candidates:

Obama funding

Hillary funding

Romney funding

Giuliani funding

Hmmm... see the similarities? Now let's look at two more hopeful candidates:
Dennis Kucinich

John Edwards

See the differences? I'm still pretty skeptical about Edwards (Goldman Sachs is also betting on Edwards), even though it's clear that he's the corporate media's least favorite and most attacked candidate (they're simply trying to ignore Kucinich, as usual).

What with the massive election fraud engineered by private firms and government officials over the past eight years, you can bet that this is election is going to be a real stinker.

Hey world! Could you send us some international election observers? We're going to need them...

1. Am I the only one who remembers Ophray saying she doesn't get involved in politics? Now, suddenly when there's a black candidate she does! Seem a little racist to anyone but me? Racism, and prejudice goes both(all) ways!

2. I watched the Backrupcey Bill very closely, it did effect me personally but I thought it 'told' a lot about Congresspersons by how they voted. It was definately anti-consumer, anti-'little people', basically written by the credit industry, OBAMA VOTED FOR IT!!! Need I say more?

I WILL NOT vote for Hillary, way to Corporatist/Centrist/Blue

Since when is that Oprah a Democrat? No one is forgetting her major endorsement of Bush and his WAR in IRAQ. She did indeedy make a very large production, at the time, about how urgent it was that America act as quickly as possible to rid the world of Bush's phony WMD's. That's when she lost me, I've never been bothered with her since. She does not have the power to sway my vote for any candidate. And she needs to keep herself out of politics. I, personally, hold her respondsible for a whole lot a persuadin America's more gullible to vote for that skunk Bush. I've never heard any retraction from her regarding her pro-war and pro-Dubya sentiments. If I was Obama, I'd steer clear, cause it's smelling skunky agin.

What Ron Paul, Poppop, and the rest of Ron Paul's followers REALLY want is to deny women the right to choose, They are anti-abortion zealots, under a new label.

And who needs another conservative TEXAN in the White House. Haven't we had enough red state stupidity in the past 6.5 years?

Get honest, Poppop. You aren't fooling anyone.

I liked Oprah in her role in The Color Purple, but now, NO! And as far as influencing who I vote for, well, I can think for myself, thank you! If I'm going to make a mistake, I'll make my own mistake...I wouldn't vote for Obama, and I don't really trust Hillary. Edwards is too rich to appeal to me-this country needs to get back to salt-of-the-earth people; that's who built up this country and made it strong in the 50's and 60's. Stick a fork in us now; we're done, IMO. I like and dislike Ron Paul.

I think this country needs a do-over, because there are no really GOOD choices anymore.
