The White House Has a Manual for Silencing Protesters and Demonstrations
Sign up to stay up to date on the latest headlines via email.
After a myriad of stories about people being excluded from events where the President is speaking, now we know that the White House had a policy manual on just how to do so.
Called the "Presidential Advance Manual," this 103-page document from the Office of Presidential Advance lays out the parameters for how to handle protesters at events.
"Always be prepared for demonstrators," says the document, which is dated October 2002 and which the ACLU released as part of a new lawsuit.
In a section entitled "Preventing Demonstrators," the document says: "All Presidential events must be ticketed or accessed by a name list. This is the best method for preventing demonstrators. People who are obviously going to try to disrupt the event can be denied entrance at least to the VIP area between the stage and the main camera platform. ... It is important to have your volunteers at a checkpoint before the Magnetometers in order to stop a demonstrator from getting into the event. Look for signs they may be carrying, and if need be, have volunteers check for folded cloth signs that demonstrators may be bringing."
In another section, entitled "Preparing for Demonstrators," the document makes clear that the intention is to deprive protesters of the right to be seen or heard by the President: "As always, work with the Secret Service and have them ask the local police department to designate a protest area where demonstrators can be placed, preferably not in view of the event site or motorcade route."
The document also recommends drowning out protesters or blocking their signs by using what it calls "rally squads." It states: "These squads should be instructed always to look for demonstrators. The rally squad's task is to use their signs and banners as shields between the demonstrators and the main press platform. If the demonstrators are yelling, rally squads can begin and lead supportive chants to drown out the protestors (USA!, USA!, USA!). As a last resort, security should remove the demonstrators from the event site."
The document offered advice on how to recruit members for such squads: "The rally squads can include, but are not limited to, college/young republican organizations, local athletic teams, and fraternities/sororities."
The document does contain a warning in bold, however: "Remember -- avoid physical contact with demonstrators." It also advises to make sure that whatever action is taken to drown out the demonstrators does not "cause more negative publicity than if the demonstrators were simply left alone."

Watching this administration implode right before my very eyes can only be described as the gift that keeps giving. The sight of these contemptable bastards and bitches (Hi, Condi!) finally paying for their crimes against humanity in general and the men, women and little children of Iraq in particular will be an absolute joy.
I can't say this enough: George W. Bush will be remembered in American history, primarily, as the first president of the United States to go to federal prison.
He will die there.

Silly me, I really thought this idiot was so popular that there was no dissent! So what would happen if there was full scale dissent among his audience, would his secret service open fire at the dissenters? OR, ARE THEY BEHOLDEN TO BUSH, AND NOT TO "THE GODDAM PIECE OF PAPER"? Mission accomplished? What a disgrace!

Forty men in a room with one toilet (no cubicle). Concrete floors and no heat or air conditioning (we are talking desert here). Strip searches and arbitrary removal of telephone privileges (group punishment). Disgusting food. The men called each other and themselves, "Dawgs".
Actually, every person in the state legislature should spend a short spell there for allowing such a hellhole to exist.

This shouldn't be a surprise. Its what they did at both the DNC and RNC. What is interesting, though, is that this says right out in the open that they want the SS and the police concerned with preventing dissent... which has nothing to do with security.

like Canadas Harper government that was exposed for its dirty tricks manual to obstruct progress and try to cause problems and not get any work done when things weren't going in the governments favor, they would just throw hissy fits and disrupt Canadians lives.
Its bad enough Harper forced an extention of combat without any real debate or discussion on things.
thats weak leadership when they resort to such dirty tricks manuals.

In Italy, during the late 1920's thru the 1930's, they were called "Brown Shirts" and they supported Mussolini and his brand of Fascism. In Germany, during the 1930's, they were "Black Shirts" who later became the Gestapo.
Friends, we are in deep shit.
God night and good luck.....

Check last night's Bill Moyers' Journal aired on PBS. It's likely on YouTube now, diaries on it are on Dkos. Impassioned arguements for the necessity of impeachment of Bush/Cheney. The best line from the show was (paraphrased)
Impeachment will not cause a constitutional crisis, it is a cure for the constitutional crisis that presently grips the USA.
It is important not to have a President/Vice-President who are not loyal to the constitution and who do not follow the rule of law. The evidence is in, why wait?

The public is the enemy of the fascist leader. The public requires controlling so as to allow for the fascist agenda to play out. This pamphlet could not possibly be more telling of the mentality which led the 20th century into hideous cataclysm. It is truly astonishing that things have been allowed to get this far out of kilter. We must be careful not to take too much comfort in the current unpopularity of Bush. Another 9/11 episode could trigger a planned police action to test the efficacy of the police state which has been quietly under construction for the past six years. Perhaps Mr. Chertoff's premonitions regarding an impending terrorist attack on U.S. soil are more than that. They appear especially so to those crazies, like myself, who believe that 9/11 was an inside job. The difference is, ours is a lot more than a "gut feeling".

This is getting to be bit much. There are way too many allusions to pre-WWII fascism to be ignored. Consider the history of Hitler Youth:
"German youth could join the Hitler Youth beginning at the age of 10. The organization was divided into two categories, one for members ages 10-14 and the other for members 14-18. The organizational structure was based on a military model, with squads, platoons, and companies."
"Hitler was a firm believer in the need to indoctrinate Nazi ideology early and the power of young people in ensuring the continued vitality of the "Thousand Year Reich." The Hitler Youth was based on Hitler's anti-intellectualism, focusing on military training in preparation for becoming a soldier at 18."
"Young German women were indoctrinated with the values of obedience, duty, self-sacrifice, discipline and physical self-control. The goal of girls in the BDM was to prepare women for motherhood and raise children who would be educated in the ways of National Socialism. They were indoctrinated with "racial pride" and told to avoid any contact with Jews."
So, things are obviously not as bad now as they were in Nazi Germany - but when Republican political operatives start calling for the recruitment of youth gangs for political purposes, you have to wonder about their long-term objectives - especially when you include the right-wing obssession with "Christian soldier training camps".

Just before the mayor started to speak, quite a few secret service types placed themselves just so so he wouldn't be able to see Melanie and I with her sign, makepotlegal555.org.
I noticed it and was annoyed by their behavior. Melanie wanted me to hang out with her on the lawn and I wanted Gavin to see us.
I was gratified to note I wasn't the only person who noticed the gathering Bluemen. Redmen came into the area and their presence was much greater, no one said a word.
Maybe Gavin missed the show, but I saw it all.

Has anyone checked Bush and Cheney's bookshelves for well-worn copies of Mein Kampf?
America Has a Problem…a BIG PROBLEM
“The liberty of democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic STATE itself. That, in its essence, is FASCISM – ownership of government by an individual, by a group or by any controlling private power.” -- President Franklin Roosevelt
THE IDENTIFYING
CHARACTERISTICS OF FASCISM
By Dr. Lawrence Britt
Free Inquiry Magazine / Spring 2003
Dr. Lawrence Britt, a political scientist, studied the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia), and Pinochet (Chile). He found the regimes all had 14 things in common, and he calls these the identifying characteristics of fascism. The article is titled 'Fascism Anyone?', and appears in Free Inquiry's Spring 2003 issue on page 20.
The 14 characteristics are:
1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism -- Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.
2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights -- Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to 'look the other way' or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.
3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause -- The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial, ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.
4. Supremacy of the Military -- Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.
5. Rampant Sexism -- The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and anti-gay legislation and national policy.
6. Controlled Mass Media -- Sometimes the media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or through sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in wartime, is very common.
7. Obsession with National Security -- Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.
8. Religion and Government are Intertwined -- Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.
9. Corporate Power is Protected -- The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.
10. Labor Power is Suppressed -- Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely or are severely suppressed.

Current rating: 5 [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment -- Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses, and even forego civil liberties, in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.
13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption -- Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions, and who use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.
14. Fraudulent Elections -- Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against (or even the assassination of) opposition candidates, the use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and the manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections
The Warnings
“There are two passions which have a powerful influence on the affairs of men. These are ambition and avarice; the love of power, and the love of money. ...Place before the eyes of such men a post of honor, that shall be at the same time a place of profit, and they will move heaven and earth to obtain it. The vast number of such places ...renders the British government so tempestuous. ...[and is the true source] of all those factions which are perpetually dividing the nation [and] distracting its councils...” -- Benjamin Franklin
“The welfare of the people in particular has always been the alibi of tyrants, and it provides the further advantage of giving the servants of tyranny a good conscience.” -- Albert Camus: French novelist, essayist, and playwright.1957 Nobel Prize for Literature. 1913-1960
”A great wave of oppressive tyranny isn't going to strike, but rather a slow seepage of oppressive laws and regulations from within will sink the American dream of liberty.” -- George Baumler
”The means of defense against foreign danger historically have become the instruments of tyranny at home.” -- James Madison: US fourth president, 1751-1836

Many of the Bush Mafia CRIMES (HIGH CRIMES) need to be investigated, so they can be documented and prosecuted, but Bush has ADMITTED to ILLEGAL WIRE TAPPING, and now this 103 page document PROVES A CONSPIRACY to violate the constitution of the United States of America!
CAN'T NANCY PELOSI READ????????
SHE SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM OFFICE FOR A VIOLATION OF HER OATH OF OFFICE TO PROTECT AND DEFEND THE CONSTITUTION, AND TO UPHOLD THE LAWS OF THE UNITED STATES.
SHE'S AS MUCH A CRIMINAL AS THE PSYCHOPATHS IN THE WHITE HOUSE... SHE IS NO MORE QUALIFIED TO ASSUME THE PRESIDENCY (IN CASE SHE EVER FINDS THE NERVE OR ETHICS TO IMPEACH BUSH AND CHENEY) THAN THE MAN ON THE MOON!!!
IMPEACH PELOSI FIRST! THEN IMPEACH BUSH AND CHENEY, RICE, RUMSFELD, ET, AL...
In fact, they have all SOOOO far exceeded the standards for impeachment, set BY THE REPUBLICANS, that they should ALL BE IMMEDIATELY ARRESTED AND MARCHED OUT OF THE WHITE HOUSE TO A PADDED CELL, UNTIL THEY ARE BROUGHT INTO THE DOCK OF A COURTROOM TO BE TRIED FOR THEIR CRIMES OF MASS-MURDER-FOR-PROFIT, LOOTING OUR TREASURY AND OTHER MASSIVE CRIMES. And the Republicans should be the ones doing the arresting!!!!
And, since I don't believe in state-sponsored murder, they should all spend the rest of their lives in a high security prison, being poked, prodded and psychologically examined, so the world will come to know what turns human beings into such depraved subhumans.

When I saw (then-VP) Al Gore speak 10+ yrs ago, attendees were given similar treatment. Those of us wishing to enter the fenced-off main viewing area had our bags given a cursory hand search by gatekeepers (think they were Secret Service, but can't be sure) who were specifically looking for concealed signs rather than weapons--no metal detectors or wands were used, much to my amazement. Those bearing signs were denied entry, and sent to stand beyond the barricades much further back in the crowd.
Not defending the tactic, but feel it's important to note that all sides are guilty of these sorts of shenanigans...

I contacted the MN ACLU, which has not responded.
If the mere mention of the obvious, rational distaste for Republicans provokes such an aggressive response, I certainly fear the potential response to both peaceful demonstrators, and, even more, those who are ready to express some logical, purely motivated rage.

Now, I much more commonly watch Democracy Now! and read Alternet than listen to NPR or watch PBS, and while I think it is valuable to extract information from a variety of media outlets ranging from those listed above to Mother Jones to Time (just an example), I do so with the understanding that the really important goings-ons will only be realized and understood experientially, and that the closer to the truth or source you get, the more esoteric and thus harder to procure the knowledge will become. No no, the real truths about the nature of this world and its events and happenings goes far deeper...(into the rabbit hole). Smoke and mirrors, smoke and mirrors, rip through one veil and find another waiting on the other side, that is the nature of the material world; a self-replicating fallacy.

we can all be of service- the easiest thing to do is hit print and make as many copies of articles like this as you can afford-
stand where ever it may be 'legal' and hand out copies.
even in this time of instant info- our people are not getting the whole picture....we need to be on the ground passing out 'pamphlets' as vs the Brit King Geo III
just hit 'print' or spend a dime and have 100 copies made-go to your local mall and place them on windshields. if traveling leave them on the seats in airports- in the rest rooms. Every week I find a little rolled up advert fastened with a rubber band to my mail box flag- for lawn service, etc
is it 'illegal' to place copies of this kind of info in the same way? No need for 'sacrifice'- just take them with you each time you venture away from 'screens'....Please.......Do it...Today.... So many are totally unaware- busy working 2 jobs to keep their health ins.- no time for 'alternet' or u tube, etc- we must reach those people. thank you.

This would be an excellent question and pledge to confront all the primary candidates with.
First, do you approve of the way that this White House has cordoned off dissident speech, even to the point of using this manual?
Second, will you pledge to respect truly free speech by:
a. not using such tactics in your own campaign, either in the primary or final stages?
b. if elected, you will not permit such tactics to be used while you are in the White House, and will pressure your party not to use such tactics for other party candidates or party events while you're in the White House?
c. pressuring your party not to allow such tactics to be used at the 2008 party convention?

The "Presidential Advance Manual," this 103-page document from the Office of Presidential Advance ...
========
