Edwards on Coulter: "She has no shame" [VIDEO]
First of all, Chris Matthews is a horrendous journalist. He seems obsessed with trying to convince his viewers of how smart Ann Coulter is and what a "good writer" she is. He tries to behave like he doesn't respect what she says but then he has her on his show repeatedly just because "she sells books". To me he represents the worst of political journalism because he only interprets events in terms of "who won" and "who lost". It's people like him who beat meaningless national polls to death in order to try to drum up excitement about a presidential race. Matthews makes no effort to hide his outright adoration for certain politicians (McCain comes to mind) and disdain for others (Hillary Clinton) and all the while he tries to act like somehow he's removed from the world of negative politics.
On the other hand, Edwards is right on in the video to your right. He calls Coulter's recent remarks "hate mongering" and "hate speech." He calls Coulter a "crazy" which is an understatement but a whole lot more accurate than Matthews' laudatory words. This is a woman who said she wished John Edwards would be killed in a terrorist attack, implied that Barack Obama was a terrorist just because his middle name is Hussein and claimed Edwards has a bumper sticker that read "ask me about my dead son." There is no excuse for that and I don't except the argument that a lot of liberals make which is that, "she thrives on attention", "she's being ironic", that by even addressing her we get brought down to her level. That was same logic that was embraced during John Kerry's "swift-boating" (as Edwards points out) and we all know how well that worked out. We need to speak out and fight back when this kind of speech gets out there because sometimes like with Don Imus we can hurt these people's careers and at least open up a dialogue.
