Close Gitmo Now [VIDEO]

Colin Powell calls on the Bush Administration to end the torture in Guantanamo and to give terror suspects real trials in America.

I'm no fan of Colin Powell. As far as I'm concerned he was downright cowardly during the run-up to the Iraq War. I don't buy into this "he was being a good soldier" myth about why he didn't use his considerable clout to force President Bush to back down from his plans to invade Iraq. That said, he still is beloved by a lot of moderates out there and much of the mainstream press. So when he comes out against the illegal activities the Bush Administration has endorsed in Guantanamo Bay, it sways people that perhaps a right-from-the-start progressive wouldn't. Naturally, I'd have preferred it if Powell had challenged the administration more when he was in it. But I'll take what I can get. In the video to your right, Powell goes on to say that, "Guantanamo has become a major, a major problem for America’s perception as it’s seen, the way the world perceives America. And if it was up to me, I would close Guantanamo, not tomorrow, this afternoon."
