Cheney Poses With Newborn Grandson, But Not His Lesbian Daughter

By Jennifer Chrisler, AlterNet. Posted May 28, 2007.

Cheney and his wife posed in a photo with their new grandson. While the media ate it up, they failed to question why the newborn's two mothers -- Mary Cheney and her partner Heather, were not included.

A picture is worth a thousand words. In this case the silence is deafening.

Picture the photo of the Vice President and his wife and their newborn grandchild -- fresh from delivery and still wrapped in his hospital-issue receiving blanket. What's missing here? The child's parents, of course.

The fact that this White House chose to announce the birth of Vice President Cheney's grandson -- Samuel David Cheney -- with a photo of the baby without either one of his two mothers in sight should come as no surprise. This administration continues to try to have its cake and eat it too when it comes to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Americans.

Think about it. Samuel is the Cheney's sixth grandchild -- but can you recall seeing photos of any of the other grandchildren? The only thing that makes Samuel's birth newsworthy at all is that his birth mother, Mary Cheney, is both a lesbian and the daughter of the man who is second in command of an administration that has been more destructive to the lives of LGBT parents and their families than any other group in American history.

By virtue of Mary's status as the Vice President's daughter, she and her partner, Heather Poe, continue to be arguably the most prominent Republican lesbian couple in the country. Mary's pregnancy has been covered by the media since it was first announced. The couple welcomed their first child, Samuel, into the world earlier this week. And yet the mothers are not included in the photo that was sent out to announce the birth of their child.

A more astute media might be asking why there is no photo availability of the entire family, but that is not happening. As a result of the absence of a compelling and truly representative visual to accompany the story, there has been minimal media coverage of the latest addition to one of the nation's most prominent LGBT-headed families. Once again, this administration has manipulated the media for its own purposes -- and the media has allowed them to do so. And, once again, LGBT-headed families remain largely faceless and invisible to the majority of America.

As a lesbian mother and an advocate for full equality for LGBT-headed American families, I have followed Mary Cheney's pregnancy with great interest and empathy. I have read and appreciated her statement that their baby is a "gift from God" -- for is that not true of all children?

I certainly believe that about mine. I have also read Mary's statement that, in her view, their child is "not a political statement." I wish that were also true. I absolutely join Mary and Heather in their desire to live in a world -- and to raise their son in a world -- in which that were the case. However, the unfortunate reality is that our children and our families are politicized -- but not by us. Mary and Heather's invisibility in the public announcement of their own son's birth is proof of that reality.

It is no secret that President Bush and Vice President Cheney's re-election campaign strategy centered around mobilizing the most conservative elements of the Republican Party by targeting LGBT people and their families. Ballot initiatives about same-sex marriage were introduced in many states with the specific intent of bringing religious conservatives to the polls.

However, when asked about his daughter Mary's sexual orientation, Vice President Cheney has consistently asserted his love and support for his daughter. In addition, the Vice President was described by an official White House spokesperson as "looking forward with eager anticipation" to the birth of his sixth grandchild. Additionally, when asked specifically about Mary and Heather becoming parents, President Bush replied that he thought Mary would be "a loving soul to her child" and "a fine mom." Mary's partner, Heather, reportedly even receives protection from the Secret Service.

Nevertheless, in a cowardly move to mollify their conservative base, the administration stripped Samuel's lesbian mothers from the picture heralding his arrival. It simply doesn't get any more political than that.

Why Has Mary Cheney Not Fought Harder For Gay Rights?
Posted by: ZPaul on May 28, 2007 2:33 AM

I know Mary Cheney has stated that she does not agree with the official Republican stance on gays. But why the hell doesn´t she do something about it? One would be tempted to think that, being the child of privilege that she undoubtedly is, she is afraid to lose that position of privilege by standing up to a political party that has an awful history with regard to gay rights. Mary, if you´re reading this, it´s not simply the closet of gayness that you need to come out of, but the closet of Conservative Comfort - Conserved through your Silence.

I don't like Dick Cheney, matter of fact he should be tried, convicted and the same fate befall him that befell Saddam. But that's another story.
The question is; "why isn't Mary Cheney or Heather Poe in the photo?" Answer: because Mary Cheney (and by association her partner) are fu**ing cowards. They do what daddy says. Why long for that which isn't? Mary Cheney may be a lesbian; but she certainly isn't a role model, at least not for any LGBT people that I know.
Get over yourself and quit trying to hold Mary Cheney (or, at least your idea of Mary Cheney-and how she is supposed to act) to your standards. Get a grip.

Cheney has a lesbian daughter and is against gay marriage. Rather than care about her future, wanting his child to enjoy a close, comforting and lasting relationship with another human being, the Veep would change the U.S. Constitution to outlaw single-sex unions. At the same time, he claims to be a “conservative.”

Sorry, Dick, but real conservatives don’t change the Constitution. They solve social problems with legislation, the way our forefathers intended.

I don't see the big deal about a picture of grandparents with their grandkid, and no parents. It's been done before. If you think they want to downplay the connection between Cheney and his lesbian daughter, that's a no-brainer. He's a Republican, right? And I'll bet a Democrat would do the same in today's climate.

If the media has been following the story, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to connect the dots, so Dick is still in the middle of it. Even before the baby, the fact that his daughter is a lesbian had been well-publicized.

If you were to have a baby or grandkid, wouldn't you like to be the one to decide which pictures to release to the public, rather than political interests?

It's one thing to be cynical and point out the irony, but another thing to be outraged. It seems like an overreaction.

hey, mary... WTF??? why did you allow your asshat father to take a photo with your baby that didn't include you or your partner? that enables his lowlife stance of keeping the lgbt people down while allowing him to have the warm fuzzies of holding the baby. tell him, "no attitude change, no baby" and stand firm. you're kissing up to the people who want to wipe you and everyone who is not straight, white, republican, rich out of the american landscape. punish him by withholding his grandson. and wipe the republican shit out of your eyes. those people are elitist and their elite does not include you.

...is Mary Cheney's partner, Heather.

According to all the press reports I've read, she has no claim to the child at all. If she and Mary Cheney go their separate ways, she has no legal rights to visitations or support, no say in any of the decisions that parents make for their children (education, religion, etc.).
I just don't understand how someone could be happy with a situation like that. To my mind, there's no such thing as gay rights -- only human rights. If two consenting adults, regardless of sex, make the committment to raise a child, they should be afforded the same protections and rights across the board.
Yet the ReThugs seem to be determined to keep those rights and protections from her and from same-sex partners across the country -- led by "Buckshot" Cheney. How can Heather even stand to be in the same room with Cheney? How can he even look her in the face?
Or does Mary visit her parents alone?

I'm not going to challenge the idea that the GWB administration is the worst in history...that's probably true...though Andrew Johnson and James Buchanan were pretty bad too.

However, how can it be said that that this administration has been the worst for GLBT families in history?

Up until Clinton, no president has done squat for us! And Clinton wasn't that great either...but at least he admitted we existed and spoke of us in a positive way.

So how are they the worst? I'd say they are just as bad. One might even say that Reagan was worse.

Andrew

What, You Think Mary's a Queer Advocate?!?
Posted by: cellorelio on May 28, 2007 8:01 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Puhlease! She made her career working as gay and lesbian outreach coordinator for Coors Beer--the same company the queer community had been boycotting since 1974.

Aside from a slick PR campaign targeting younger queers unfamiliar with the Coors family legacy, nothing much has changed. Coors Brewing may no longer ask if a prospective employee is homosexual, but the Coors family still uses the money they make from sales of their beer to support anti-queer conservative causes.

Former Coors Brewing Chair Pete Coors ran for US Senate in 2004 as an outspoken supporter of a federal constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage.

Way to support queer families Mary. Though, I guess when daddy's the VP, you only really have to worry about your own family.

...about Cheney and his grandbaby? Named or unnamed, gay or straight. That is not the news we want to know. The news we want to know is what is in Cheney's (never revealed) SECRET ENERGY POLICY. That would be news. Cheney's stonewalling of the subpoenas suggest that there sre some mighty unsavory stuff in those papers and we will probably never know what it was. My guess is that the papers contained the word "Iraq" many times, and this was six months before 9/11.

but to get a picture of your new grandson without the parents doesn't seem 'evil'. Who hasn't taken a photograph with their grandkids? What, all photographs must include all family members at all times? I'm sure they got plenty of photographs (these days with digital cameras they probably have 100's) with them with grandson, grandma with grandson, grandpa with grandson, grandparents with daughter and grandson, partners with child, partner grandparents and grandson, etc. Pick on Cheney for his REAL problems (oil scandals, Iraq, Iran, Diebolt, KBR contracts) but it is truely reaching to claim a photograph with your grandson is evil.

Speaking from my experience as a father and grandpa, only a sociopath would disown a lesbian daughter and, at the same, pose with her new-born child to improve his public persona. But then, Dick Cheney’s egocentric behavior should surprise no one.

Nor should we be fooled by his wife’s seemingly loving attitude towards little Samuel. Lynn Cheney is absolutely the last grandmother he deserves -- a rightwing clone of her heartless hubby.

In 1995, Mrs. Cheney founded the American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA), a conservative group that monitors American colleges and academia. A current member of ACTA's national council is archconservative Irving Kristol, father of Bill Kristol, founder of the rightwing subversive organization and prime instigator of Gulf War 2 -- Project for a New American Century (PNAC).

Not coincidentally two ACTA trustees are PNAC members: William Bennett (one of PNAC's 25 founders including Dick Cheney, Don Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, Scooter Libby and UN Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad) and Martine Peretez.

Lynn Cheney is presently a senior fellow at the neocon front foundation, American Enterprise Institute (AEI). Other AEI scholars, past and present, include the following PNAC members:

John Bolton
Reuel Marc Gerecht, director of PNAC’s Iraq Initiative and former CIA Middle East specialist.
Newt Gingrich
Fred Kagan
Jeane J. Kirkpatrick, PNAC founder.
Joshua Muravchik.
Richard Perle
Danielle Pletka, PNAC founder who claimed on C-SPAN that the neocon front organization wasn’t associated with AEI.

Other noteworthy AEI senior fellows include:

David Frum, author and former Bush 43 speechwriter.
Alan Keyes.
Christina Hoff Sommers, feminist movement critic and the author of Who Stole Feminism.
Fred Thompson.
John Yoo, university professor and former advisor in the Bush 43 Office of Legal Counsel who advocated torture of Gitmo detainess, to include crushing the testicles of teenaged combatants.

With a political background like Dick and Lynn Cheney's, I would suggest to Mary Cheney that family treatment in kind is worth considering. For the sake of her son's future mental health, she should completely disown his rightwing homophobic grandparents.

For AlterNet visitors unfamiliar with PNAC who desire more information, visit the non-profit investigative website, FreedomCentralUSA.com.

AlterNeters aware of PNAC will appreciate the website's alphabetical list of 225 members (called "signatories”), including Democrat hawks with liberal skins such as Bill Clinton's former Secretary of State Madeline Albright.

Forget the Cheneys for a moment and think about supporting our troops going to Iraq.

If you know a soldier or Marine headed for Iraq as part of President Bush’s troop surge plan or has just arrived in country, tell him or her about Operation-Helmet.org.

A charitable organization based in Montgomery, Texas, and managed by Dr. Bob Meaders, Operation-Helmet supplies FREE helmet upgrade kits to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as to those ordered to deploy in the near future.

Manufactured by Oregon Aero Inc, the helmet upgrades provide three primary things:

Protection : Shock-absorbing pads keep the helmet from slapping the skull when hit with blast forces, fragments, or being tumbled along the ground or inside a vehicle. This decreases the chance of brain injury from IED's, bombs, RPG's, vehicle accidents, falls, etc.

Comfort: A comfortable helmet will stay on a trooper's head longer and more often.

Stability: Keeps the helmet firmly on the head and out of the eyes.

As of today, 05-28-07, Operation Helmet had a waiting list of 215 names. Disgracefully for the world's richest nation, with special shame on President Bush and the Pentagon for doing nothing to end the shortage, it was due to inadequate contributions, not manufacturing problems.

NOTE: The U.S. Army has been supplying its combat units with less expensive liner pads made by a skateboard helmet company.

According to emails received by Operation-Helmet.org, the government-issued pads are hot, hard and uncomfortable. Some GIs are removing the pads and pounding them with a hammer to make the material softer and more wearable, which reduces protection against explosions.

Because the DOD has refused to promote Operation-Helmet.org, some GIs in the Middle East don't know the improved Oregon Aero pad system exists, despite publicity generated by the famous singer rock star, Cher. Our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan deserve the BEST equipment available, not the cheapest.

Say what you want about Dick Cheney. He didn't throw his daughter out when he heard she was gay. He's a good role model.

As for the war. It's Hillary Clintons', John Edwards' John Kerrys' etc., as much as it is Cheneys'. Cheney didn't vote for the war. They did. As Cindy Sheanen notes, the left used her when they had no power. Now, they role over.

My gut feelings is that the supreme being is rewarding "cheney' in his own way to saddle him with the glaring evil of what he , cheney, has made the American familes suffer for loss of our warriors...It is a glaring abomnimation of cheney and his family in full view of the world...
It could be worse, cheny having a heart attack, cancer or his daugher, grandchild having HIV which may still occur, or whatever could befall an evil man of cheney's reputation...Your guess is as good as mine...Man , the blood he and Bush "The Weasel" have on their hands could flood the Amazon River and fill the "The Lake of Fire"...

The Bush Administration is taking a lot of heat on the comments on the Cheney grandchild on the alternet site. For the record, please see the "official" wording at the White House Website of the announcement of the birth of the Vice President's grandchild. If the link doesn't work, it says: " Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife, Lynne Cheney, welcomed their sixth grandchild, Samuel David Cheney, Wednesday, May 23, 2007. He weighed 8 lbs., 6 oz and was born at 9:46 a.m. at Sibley Hospital in Washington, D.C. His parents are the Cheneys’ daughter Mary, and her partner, Heather Poe. White House photo by David Bohrer" Notably, the White House has generated a lot of controversy from the RIGHT WING in announcing, basically, that "Samuel has two mommies." I think the White House and the Cheney family acted entirely appropriately in this situation. And now, I prepare to suffer the arrows being aimed at me for pointing this out

The Cheneys also excluded their straight daughter from a photo-op with their grandchild who was born in 2004, as can be seen in this 2004 photo from the White House website. Shouldn't we all be appalled about that?
