Yeltsin: An Obit of a Drunken, Bloblike Train Wreck of a Revolutionary Leader

By Matt Taibbi, RollingStone.com. Posted April 24, 2007.

With his drunkenness, his perfect and instinctive amorality, his effortless thievery, and his casual use of lethal force, Boris Yeltsin represented a type intimately familiar to all Russians.

Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin was always good for a laugh, which is probably why on the occasion of his death people outside of Russia are not calling him words like scum and monster, but instead recalling him fondly, with a smile, as one would a retarded nephew who could always be counted on to pull his pants down at Thanksgiving dinner.

Like most people who lived in Russia during the 1990s -- and Russia was my home throughout Yeltsin's entire reign as Russian president -- I have a wide variety of fond memories of the Motherland's drunken, bloblike train wreck of a revolutionary leader. My favorite came in 1995, at a press conference in Moscow, when a couple of American reporters perfectly captured the essence of Yeltsin by heckling him as he stumbled into the room. As he burst through the side entrance with that taillight-red face of his, hands wobbling in front of him in tactile search of the podium, the two hacks in the back called out: "Nor-r-r-r-r-r-m!" Such a perfect moment, I almost died laughing. Boris Nikolayevich, of course, was too wasted to hear the commotion at the back of the room.

Boris Yeltsin probably had more obituaries ready in the world's editorial cans than any chronically-ill famous person in history. He has been dying for at least twenty consecutive years now -- although he only started dying physically about ten years ago, he has been dying in a moral sense since at least the mid-'80s. Of course, spiritually speaking, he's been dead practically since birth. ... I once visited Boris Yeltsin's birthplace, in a village in the Talitsky region of the Sverdlovsk district in the Urals, a tiny outhouse of a place called Butka. I knocked on the door of the shack where Yeltsin was born and stepped in the soft ground where his room had once been. Boris Yeltsin was born in mud and raised in shit.

He was descended from a long line of drunken peasants who in hundreds of years of non-trying had failed to escape the stinky-ass backwater of the Talitsky region, a barren landscape of mud and weeds whose history is so undistinguished that even the most talented Russian historians struggle to find mention of it in imperial documents. They did find Yeltsins here and there in the Czarist censuses, but until the 20th century none made any mark in history. The best of the lot turned out to be Boris's grandfather, a legendarily mean and greedy old prick named Ignatiy Yeltsin, who achieved what was considered great wealth by village standards, owning a mill and a horse. Naturally, the flesh-devouring Soviet government, the government that would later make Boris Yeltsin one of its favored and feared vampires, liquidated Ignatiy for the crime of affluence, for the crime of having a mill and a horse.

In those early days of the revolution, you see, the most worthless, drunken and lazy of the peasants became temporary big-shots with puffed-up communist titles and accompanying important-looking little red vinyl badges just by ratting out the rich farmers, called kulaks, of which Ignatiy was one. They would "razkulachivat" (de-kulak) the kulaks by denouncing them to the secret police and having them sent to prison camps -- and once they were safely gone, the little bastards would appropriate the boss's shit for themselves and spend their days getting drunk in his haystacks, a peasant version of paradise on earth.

That was what Marxism looked like in the 1930s in Russia. Boris Yeltsin's father Nikolai saw this happen to his family and so he moved away from Butka, to the city of Kazan, to work construction at the site of a machine-building plant. During that time the Yeltsin family lived in a workers' barracks where men, women, children and the elderly slept on top of each other like animals and fought, literally fought with fists and lead pipes, for crusts of bread, or a few feet of space upon which to sleep at night. The communist government found its leaders among the meanest and greediest of the children who survived and thrived in places like this. Boris Yeltsin was such a child. As a teenager he only knew two things; how to drink vodka and smash people in the face. At the very first opportunity he joined up with the communists who had liquidated his grandfather and persecuted his father and became a professional thief and face-smasher, rising quickly through the communist ranks to become a boss of the Sverdlovsk region, where he was again famous for two things: his heroic drinking and his keen political sense in looting and distributing the booty from Soviet highway and construction contracts. If Boris Yeltsin ever had a soul, it was not observable in his early biography. He sold out as soon as he could and was his whole life a human appendage of a rotting, corrupt state, a crook who could emerge even from the hottest bath still stinking of booze, concrete and sausage.

It's worth noting that Yeltsin's future political adversary, Mikhail Gorbachev, grew up in almost identical conditions of mud, misery and starvation in the Stavropol region. But while Gorbachev's childhood turned him into a pathologically self-hating wannabe, a scheming, two-faced party intellectual who privately lusted after French villas and foreign-tailored suits and would eventually be undone by his habit of parading in public with a wife who wore jewels and furs, Yeltsin never left the mud and never tried to. He remained a mean, thieving country drunk his whole life.

That does sound like a classic moment. You were lucky to be a fly on the wall that day.

Nice eulogy.

I hate whitewash - glad to see some truth for a change.

The best thing Yeltsen did was to weaken the Soviet Union enough that former slave states could break away.

The worst is that he screwed things up so much that he not only turned a fledgling democracy over to the KGB - but that the Russian people then breathed a huge sigh of relief.

I am glad this is the first thing I have heard or read about his death. I don't appreciate having to read how the mainstream media might try to polish this sick mutant's life.

I wish you would right articles about Putin too. I'd like to know more about this man. I do not see him as badly as yeltsin but that may be because I am ignorant. I find it hard to get information if Putin is helping to raise the Russian people's standard of living or if it's no better than under yeltsin. I am glad Putin sent Mikhail Khodorkovsky packing although he should probably be in prison and I agree with most of what Putin said during his recent speech in Munich but I'd very much like to know if the state's reaquisition of Yukos is doing anything to amerliorate the suffering most Russians have endured through yeltsin's so called "democratization".

And your assement of yeltsin's reign seems similiar to bush's. His administration is bleeding the masses dry to satiate a bunch of pigs. Who would be snowball in the bush adminstration's modern rendition of Animal Farm? I'd call cheney, Napoleon and bush, Squealer.

Very insightful reading, Mr. Taibbi.
What I am wondering is how mr. Yeltsin's dealings to those of that other Boris: Berezovsky? How come the latter is so reviled in Russia, while Yeltsin did exactly the same things? Of course the propaganda by the Russian state media plays a big role, but are there any other factors at play here?

Thanks. Another glimpse into the heart of darkness. Yeltsin sounds like a student of Stalin. The western patriarchs are just as mean and drunk with power but they are slicker and therefore sicker. We need to clean house with the power of Love. Societal conditions that produce these monsters must be addressed.

About time!

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Thank you, Matt.
It's about time this septic tank of a man croked. I hope he rots in hell. It's also about time somebody told the world what actually happened under the flag of "democratization". Great article.

I want to add my 2 C here: it's not only Western creditors and Russian taxpayers who got screwed. It was not much fun for the rest of us, other members of the "Brotherly Union". You mentioned the Transdniester campaign - it was not exactly a walk in a park for either the Moldovans or the defiant "Transdniestrians" (a funky mix of Russians, Ukrainians and Jews, much like the legendary Odessa ethos). Nor was it much fun for the Ukraine, which was flooded by the refuges from both sides of the conflict. And the whole issue had the "Hand of Moscow" all over it from the beginning. Similar situation in Georgia, except there Russia managed to open two fronts: one in Abkhazia and one in Osetia. And what about the whole Ukraine freezing during the winter, while Yeltsin and Co. decided to use energy supplies as a political leverage?

The guy was an asshole to everybody except a dozen of his Mafia buddies. And you are right - he was dead from the very beginning. Finally, he is gone for real. Good riddance. I hope his version of hell will involve an eternal unquenchable hangover.

Yeltsin obit will also be appropriate for Bush's death --- hopefully.

Excellent article and accurate assessment.

I wrote the following response to the standard, sappy, emotionalized lies of the Wall Street Journal's obit of Yeltsin yesterday --- but since the WSJ obviously wouldn't print my letter, I'll share it with you here:

While presiding over the wholesale looting of his country's commonwealth, Yeltsin is credited with at least self-servingly confronting the ultimate scourge of Empire, and trying to naively bring what he thought might be exploitable political economic democracy to average 'working class' people.

Whereas Bush also presided over the unpresidented looting of his country's commonwealth (through the more guileful techniques of negative externalization), but has not yet been fully recognized for his treasonous plunging of the last vestages of American democracy into, rather than out of, Empire (under the disguise of this phony "Vichy America").

The universal moral values of the Communist Empire had already been mortally perverted from their claimed value of socialism; "'Right' was what served the working class" ---- and thus the evil Empire had to fall.

But the values of Bush's insideously disguised global corporate Empire have always been that 'Right' was what served the elite class, and this more sophisticated and guileful Empire of lies, looting, war-crimes, and death will also fall --- and soon!

Thanks for the eye opener. That Yeltsin was as you describe doesn't surprise me, but getting a blunt version of the facts is refreshing nonetheless. Keep it coming.

That's a very negative view of Russia and its leaders. Incidentally it is also one of the most accurate views I've heard outside of an article by JR Nyquist in the past decade and a half.

Bravo.

Even WSJ admits that FSB was involved in apartment bombings

blamed by Putin on Cheychen terrorists. In the editorial obit on Yeltsin it was mentioned in the mainstream, corporate-elitist newspaper the Wall St Journal that after 3 buildings were bombed in Russia a 4th was being bombed but the bombs failed to detonate and the local police arrest the bombers===who turned out to be FSB agents. Does anyone understand how important and crazy this is? Russia BOMBED their OWN PEOPLE to gain support for the 'war on terror' against the Chencnaya?!?! It was casually mentioned in the piece, like it is no big deal. Is the world insane that more people aren't mentioning this???

What an absolutely sophomoric article! If you don't like someone's politics, condemn their politics and evil deeds. Don't just rant and insult like a second grader. Describing someone as "bloblike" is uncalled for. You could never get away with that with any other group. To bad you can't have some sensitivity to the people in your new culture! That someone of this quality can call get published shows what a sorry society we have degenerated into!

Where did the loot come from?

One doesn't have to be fond of Stalinism to recognize that, if the Soviet system had been as dysfunctional as Matt Taibbi makes it out to be, there wouldn't have been all that much for Yeltsin and his cronies to loot!

The process that culminated in Yeltsin's 1991 coup was a counter-revolution from above. Thanks to that counter-revolution, most of the states of Eastern Europe are now firmly in the camp of imperialism, which is bad news for the peoples of the neo-colonized world. The capitalist reconquista has also been bad news for large sections of their own populations, including much of the working class and national minorities like the Roma.

You're helping to cover up 9/11. You lied and said you would write a column addressing the physics of the collapses of the twin towers AND building 7. You haven't writtena nything have you? You know how all those buildings fell and yet you wrote a column claiming there was nothing to the claims that all three buildings were demolished with explosives. You are an accessory to murder after the fact, Matt. No one who has looked at the evidence as you claim to have done can reasonably argue that they were confused about this. No, we won't forget. Yes, despite your efforts and whatver snide comments appear to defend you here more people are coming out with the truth every day, like ROsie O Donnell. OOOOooohhh Matt. You chose SO poorly.
