Southern School Holds First Prom for Blacks and Whites

By Carmen K. Sisson, Christian Science Monitor. Posted April 25, 2007.

A half century after the Supreme Court ended racial segregation, parents and students in Ashburn, Ga., were still clinging to old ways, holding whites-only and blacks-only dances. This spring, the school finally broke that color barrier.

They went to kindergarten together, sharing crayons and sleeping carpets, chocolate milk and peanut butter sandwiches. They navigated the treacherous waters of adolescence, laughing their way through disastrous first dates and drivers ed. They gossiped about teachers, cried over broken hearts, and struggled with algebra.

For as long as Turner County High School's seniors can remember, they've always been together -- black and white, rich and poor. And now less than a month from graduation, they wanted to be together one more time, experiencing one of high school's most sacred traditions: the prom.

In the process, their simple wish would shatter another time-honored tradition in Ashburn, Ga., and change history.

Although segregation ended in this farming community years ago, some say the old ways never truly died. And every spring, while schools around the country planned junior/senior proms, Turner County's parents and students planned two unofficial private proms -- one for the white students, and one for the black.

Within the school's hallways, the parties weren't discussed. No posters were hung, no fliers distributed, no tickets sold. But everyone knew. It was so common that it was considered normal here in rural Georgia.

Because the parties are private, no one tracks the number of towns still holding separate proms, but most people here say fewer places seem to be continuing the practice. Still, Ashburn -- population 4,400, home of the annual Fire Ant Festival, and the "world's largest peanut" monument -- has clung stubbornly to tradition. Saturday night, that custom ended when 150 students gathered in Turner County Civic Center for the first school-sponsored, all-inclusive prom.

Mandy Alberson's eyes are shining as she inspects herself in the mirror at His and Hers Hairstyles in downtown Ashburn. Consulting a folded piece of paper, the senior, who is white, compares her tiara-topped tresses to the drawing in her hand. "Is this going to hold?" she wails to stylist Luana Moore. "It's gotta last 'til tomorrow morning for 'Good Morning America!' "

The cellphone in her lap rings. It's James Hall, the senior class president, who is African-American. He's got his own problems. A television crew is following him everywhere he goes, and he's not sure if he and his date will be able to meet Mandy and her date at Applebee's after all. They'll meet up at the prom. "I love that boy," Mandy says, clicking the phone closed.

Giddy with excitement, she explains that she and James have been planning this night since middle school. Even then the two friends knew they wanted one prom for everyone. When the school year began, the four senior class officers -- two black and two white -- came to principal Chad Stone and asked for his support. To their surprise, the first-year administrator gave it, wholeheartedly, even agreeing to devote $5,000 of his discretionary funds to the cause.

James says that in the past the administration always said there wasn't enough student support for a prom. In fact, the choice was given to the students a few years ago and they voted it down. "They didn't let them know the benefits," James says as he paces outside New Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, waiting for a second limousine to transport a growing number of black students to the prom in style. "It's a better memory this way. Wouldn't you rather remember it with your black and white friends?"

Tameka Jones graduated from Turner County in 1995. She says her class wanted to have the prom together, but the administration said it would be too difficult to have music that would please everyone. In the end, two separate proms were held as usual. Jones attended the blacks-only prom at a motel in Cordele, 30 miles away.

Great to read something positive about the American people, albeit children, they have a thing or two to teach us.

I wonder, though, had they been middle eastern, would the purple comment still apply?

I'd like to see Americans become more openly and genuinely caring, where someone from another country would say, those Americans, you know, they are such kind people...instead of other countries seeing how arrogant and demanding we are with a chip on our shoulders. I've stopped counting how many times I have been embarrassed by my countrymen in front of my other than American friends.

Born in Southern California (1935) to liberal white parents, I grew up in Louisiana where bigotry was institutionalized – i.e. separate public schools for black and white students, segregated restrooms and different drinking fountains.

Racism filled the air like an invisible stench. I will never forget walking home from Fair Park High School one day and passing a gas station where a black man had died from natural causes (apparently).

Instead of calling paramedics, the station’s attendants had propped up the man’s body by the entrance for patrons to see. I saw flies buzzing in and out of his open mouth. All the horrifying scene needed was a sign that said, “A good nigger is a dead nigger.”

Fast forward to Atlanta, Georgia. I worked there from 1988 to 1994 for Delta Air Lines. Not a day went by without someone in my shop telling a racist joke about “Norwegians” the latest codeword for "niggers.”

Bigoted Delta employees called the beltway around Atlanta “The Congo Circle” while the public transportation system – MARTA – meant “Moving Africans Rapidly Through Atlanta.” Yet, at same time, the racists’ kids in high school were happily commingling with black students, enjoying the same hip-hop songs and dating each other. You could almost hear the citywide gnashing of white parents’ teeth. I loved it!

Disown the South

Maybe it's time to disown the South like that drunken, bigoted, violent bastard son of America that it is.

I mean, good for the kids who took the initiative here and changed their own circumstances. But shame on their parents! That their parents still clung and cling to the outdated notion of "other side of the tracks" is ridiculous and unacceptable.

Even in large cities, racism persists. I've heard accounts of suburban parents who expressly tell their children to stay out of certain areas of the city only because those areas are "full of *******."

And though there are many instances of young people overcoming their parents' racism, there are also many other instances in which young people transmute their parents' racism into their own. Take for example the recent constitutional amendments to ban affirmative action that passes popular ballot initiatives in California and Michigan. Since then, on college campuses especially, racial slurs have become much more prevalent and white resentment against the presence of minorities ("How does their being here improve my education?") has risen. In these areas, rich, white majority students have suddenly felt free to express any racist whim that happens to cross their over-cramped minds.

So, there is progress, yes. But only a paltry amount.

The 'Christian' Schools movement exploded in the South about the time integration of the schools took hold and continues to this day as the growing Black Middle Class moves into formerly all-white suburbs and enclaves. They allow students of color as long as they are athletes as window dressing- others need not apply.

How do I know this? My family moved south from the midwest and I attended Public Schools in the south from the 5th through the 12th Grades and have lived in Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri, Texas and Arkansas. If nobody else hasn't noticed this they are not paying attention.

There are and have always been faith based schools, but in the South most date from the time the local school district integrated. They were founded as a dodge from integration and now function as a de facto class divider. The South has always had an oligarchy and private schools are now part of the equation.

How about finding interracial prom dating in oh say rural IL and KS? Or how about Native Americans and the whites in South Dakota? And what about the BIG RACIAL RIFT plaguing CA? You won't find inter-racial prom dating in states like NY, NJ, MA unless anyone can prove me wrong but hey, what the fuck? Just blame it all on the south only !

I live in Jackson, Mississippi which is the capital of Mississippi. I am the Systms Adminsitrator for the public schools here. In my offcie we have 9 blacks, 6 whites, 1 hispanic, 4 gays and 12 straight. I can assure you that while bigotry still exists, things are better here than in a lot of other parts of the country. Jackson in 70% black, and I live right in the middle of town (by the abortion clinic that is under siege from the Baptists). We work together, we go to church together, and we socialize together. The biggest barrier is now not race, but poverty and ignorance, which can manifest itself in the form of racism. Most of your middle calss whites are not "racist" in the hateful form portrayed in the movies. The only rebel flag waiving contingment left is the poor working class whites that are uneducated. They were the one's who were socially displaced when civil right reform came south, and for whatever reason hold on to the symbols of the old South.

For all the bad that came out of the South, there is an equal amount of good, which is what makes our region so compelling. Besides the old Northeast, the deep south has more history than the rest of the US put together. My state of Mississippi has contributed more to the culture of this great country than just about any state you can name, whether its the arts, literature, athletes, msuic etc...

Someone above states that the north gets a pass ...that is because this kind of segregation would not be allowed.
There is plenty of racism, but it would not be allowed in such a public manner as this.
It is hard to believe skin pigments could ever be an issue.

They reported on that in NC some years back and a large number of the black kids wanted to keep a seperate prom, because they didn't want to lose their opportunity to be prom kings and queens.

Racism is a problem and certainly not limited to the South

Where I grew up (D.C. area) racism is rampant. Most of the racism is by blacks directed against whites. This area of the country is unique in that the number of federal jobs combined with rampant affirmative action has placed blacks in a majority power position in the region. They are the HR managers, executives, the gate keepers at every level from top to bottom.

I have personally been insulted using racial slurs no less than 4 times in the past few years in public places.

"White trash" by a black female hotel employee at a Days Inn at the Inner Harbor Baltimore Maryland where I was staying overnight prior to a flight out of BWI to Europe where I spent 3 years serving in the Air Force.

"White bread, white bread, cracker honkey b****" by a young black kid while I was at a theme park in the D.C. area.

Etc. etc.

Other parts of the country supposedly have problems with discrimination against blacks by whites, or Hispanics by whites, or blacks by Hispanics etc. I haven't encountered any of that, but what I do know is racism is simply a reflection of petty tribalism that is innate to the human psyche. It can be overcome temporarily through social engineering methods as long as resources are plentiful and everyone (even the poor) have more or less enough to survive.

When times get tough, even such seemingly small distinctions between groups such as Shi'ite or Sunni are grounds for wars of genocide. That is humanity in its truest state. Violent apes destroying any and all that do not belong to their tribe.

Why didn't the students just boycott the official parties years ago and just throw one of their own? Why did they stick to the tradition so long?

And why don't some of the students tell their parents where they can stick their racial hatred? Why do they have to toe the racist line? Isn't it a free and democratic country?
