Message to Readers: Help Us Keep the Bushies' Feet to the Fire

By Don Hazen, AlterNet. Posted April 11, 2007.

Tired of the war in Iraq, broken elections and crushing debt? Here's one way you can help.

As an AlterNet reader, you've probably read Joshua Holland's hard-hitting stories on Iraq and the economy. But a grant covering his full-time work has expired and his expertise doesn't come for free. So I'm reaching out to you for help. Please donate and help underwrite Joshua's full-time coverage today.

Josh is making waves. Last January, Senator Jim McDermott said before Congress that every American should read Joshua's AlterNet story, "Bush's Petro-Cartel Almost Has Iraq's Oil," an investigative report that paints a disturbing picture about big oil's attempt to steal the oil wealth of the Iraqi people.

Please help ensure that we have the resources for him to cover the war in Iraq from every possible angle, and cover issues that affect us every day on the home front.

As an AlterNet investor, you will have the personal satisfaction of knowing you are supporting independent media and our efforts to provide trustworthy journalism, to ask the hard questions, and to think beyond the strong-arm tactics of the right-wing propaganda machine.

I am happy to tell you that AlterNet is more popular than ever -- with over 2 million visitors like you each month. Our community prides itself on hard-hitting stories, videos and blog posts by talented writers and readers covering the entire gamut of pressing issues including the war in Iraq, elections, religious extremism and more.

I'm hoping to have Joshua back on board full-time in the next two weeks, which is why I'm asking for your support today.

Digg!

I'll never contribute a penny to Alternet until it covers human rights violations by Israel's enemies as impartially as it does those by Israel. Human Rights Watch is my guide on these matters, and I'm happy to contribute to their efforts.

Alternet annoys me on certain subjects, and I can't contribute much, but I like how Josh responds to reader comments and his articles are always worth reading. In fact, Alternet would be much better if he wrote all the articles (ha).

I'm an American Firster

Thanks Alternet for being an "American Firster" i.e. reporting on Israel's human rights violations and also those of other nations in the Middle East. Like the majority of Americans I put our country's best interests above that of Israel or any other country that seeks to influence American foreign policy. I support Israel's right to exist in its 1967 borders and I support its security along with equal rights and security for its Arab citizens and the Palestinians. However, I do not support our Congress and media putting Israel's interests before America. I do not want my tax dollars supporting Israel's occupations and wars with its neighbors. This has endangered the United States and more and more Americans are becoming angry about that fact!

I am not sure how this small request turned into a Pro/Anti Israel battle but for those that are not happy with Alternet's coverage, why are you here? This site gives us great, well researched and well written articles to only seek to inform and empower all of us. I only wish that I was able to do more.

Why does Josh need $$$ if he's being paid by the CIA to scuttle the 9/11 Truth Movement?

sorry, couldn't help myself.

But it does take a lot of balls by Alternet to ask for money on the same day that their lead story is about the pervasive poverty in USa suburbs and cities.

If you want to see just how corrupt the Corporate media is, with regards to servility, then you must focus on the appeasement of liberals to class nationalism, class ideology, double standards or class standards. These corrupt tendencies combine to produce support for Corporate fascism and imperial policies by the class Empire of Amerika. It is done not only through the class hierarchies, that corrupt within, class-nation-states, but also through external class hierarchies, class alliances by Western class nationalism, that corrupt even international institutions, like of the Security Council, itself a class hierarchy of Western colonial, and imperial class states, which even violates the rules, and Charter against aggression, which you should see as a generalized principle of class corruption, that filters out democracy through the lies of Iraq. These lies were and are still being premeditated, through the commission of class, nationalist propaganda, by Corporate Western journalists, who participate in the crimes by War Criminals in Congress, judicial nazis in Courts, and Executive thugs in the White House, as you saw with the New York Times using liars like Gordon, again to warmonger us into war against Iran, as he did in Iraq, through deception and cheerleading class rot. Watch Democracy Now, and you will see that Western intelligence agencies, primarily its top political, hierarchical levels, which filter out democracy and the truth, ignored the truth, that Saddam had no nuclear weapons, but and which all the class elites participated and were complicit in, by echoing the lies of "officials", by supposed respectable Newspapers, like the Washington Post and New York times.

When one forges documents to lie and get us into an illegal war of aggression, there should be War crimes tribunals, after the impeachment not only Bush, and his executive thugs, but all the appeasing class mercenaries, cheerleading class fascist foreign policies. The whole damn system, its class elites, and war criminals should be impeached for their criminal complicity and warmongering propaganda. Now these same Neocons, Zionist thugs, liberal appeasing class mercenaries are warmongering us into war with Iran and or Syria or both. Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Edwards, and others are pretenders of opposition, claiming anti war positions while cheerleading, warmongering in front of the Israeli AIPAC Lobby, to attack, and threaten Iran, itself against International laws, that violate the U.N. charter.

If we are to survive these wholesale criminal activities, generalized corruption by middle layers, themselves corrupted by class rule above, as agents for Class rule and Empire, through class hierarchies, then we must eliminate that corruption from its source. A universal middle class, without class masters above, and exploiting classes below, is inherently revolutionary because of its revolutionary center. That center is and was corrupted as soon as the middle classes were only partially developed to keep them in tow, corrupting like the middle class fascists of Germany for Corporate Capitalism, then called the extreme form Corporate Fascism, today the norm for late Capitalism.

Plato understood, or at least saw the results of his utopian attempts to graft democracy onto class society, that produced "noble lies", class ideology, and was described as corrupting forms of class civil societies, that began with Class Republics, (class democracy) degenerating towards oligarchy and plutocracy and finally Class Empire. The Enlightenment, too failied to take on this generalized corrupt link to democracy, and the revolutionary liberals were coopted, betrayed by the class liberals, commercial capitaliststs, who put property rights over human rights, hence the failure of the Enlightenement and the first Capitalist Empire under Napoleon. This kind of wholesale corruption must be negated, transformed.

Don, is it possible to find out who provided Josh's grant - if they're not an individual - and why the grant money dried up? Josh has been doing excellent work, and I hope his benefactors haven't been 'approached' by the slimy side of your control class.

Is this the same Josh Holland who refers to folks concerned about illegal aliens as "knuckle-dragging nativists? Sorry, but I don't share your assessment of this guy. Let him go out and earn a living the same way the rest of us do by working too many hours for too few dollars thanks to corporate interests that want slave-wage labor to drive us all out into the streets. Maybe if Josh Holland shares our uncertainties about the next month's rent, food and utilities and the two or more jobs we have to work just to keep a roof over our heads then he'd be a little more compassionate with America's poor instead of thinking that it's OK to push us aside.

Sorry dudes, I work too hard for a shabby living to share anything with a guy like Josh Holland.

I am disabled, on a ventilator, and must spend about 80% of my time in bed. I try to stay useful by spending lots of computer time on sites like AlterNet. My disability check is $840/mo. Try living on that for a month, folks...and the BushCo tries to cut even more--like Medicare denying a power chair because I can still walk 6 feet to the bathroom...I guess getting to Dr. appointments, etc. doesn't matter to them. I've seen this beautiful country lose its compassion and integrity under this administration, and become viewed with contempt by the rest of the world for its lies, torture policies and utter disregard for common decency. Thank God for AlterNet and folks like Josh Holland who write with intelligence and compassion and try to get this country back on track. Wish I could give more, but there is often a choice to be made between food or bills-but it is worth it to me to try to keep people like Josh out there fighting the good fight. I hope my $5 will help. Keep up the good work, AlterNet!
