Torture Is Finally on Trial

By Naomi Klein, The Nation. Posted February 26, 2007.

America has deliberately driven hundreds, perhaps thousands, of prisoners insane. Now it is being held to account in a Miami court.

Something remarkable is going on in a Miami courtroom. The cruel methods US interrogators have used since September 11 to "break" prisoners are finally being put on trial. This was not supposed to happen. The Bush administration's plan was to put José Padilla on trial for allegedly being part of a network linked to international terrorists. But Padilla's lawyers are arguing that he is not fit to stand trial because he has been driven insane by the government.

Arrested in May 2002 at Chicago's O'Hare airport, Padilla, a Brooklyn-born former gang member, was classified as an "enemy combatant" and taken to a navy prison in Charleston, South Carolina. He was kept in a cell 9ft by 7ft, with no natural light, no clock and no calendar. Whenever Padilla left the cell, he was shackled and suited in heavy goggles and headphones. Padilla was kept under these conditions for 1,307 days. He was forbidden contact with anyone but his interrogators, who punctured the extreme sensory deprivation with sensory overload, blasting him with harsh lights and pounding sounds. Padilla also says he was injected with a "truth serum," a substance his lawyers believe was LSD or PCP.

According to his lawyers and two mental health specialists who examined him, Padilla has been so shattered that he lacks the ability to assist in his own defence. He is convinced that his lawyers are "part of a continuing interrogation program" and sees his captors as protectors. In order to prove that "the extended torture visited upon Mr Padilla has left him damaged," his lawyers want to tell the court what happened during those years in the navy brig. The prosecution strenuously objects, maintaining that "Padilla is competent" and that his treatment is irrelevant.

The US district judge Marcia Cooke disagrees. "It's not like Mr Padilla was living in a box. He was at a place. Things happened to him at that place." The judge has ordered several prison employees to testify on Padilla's mental state at the hearings, which began yesterday. They will be asked how a man who is alleged to have engaged in elaborate anti-government plots now acts, in the words of brig staff, "like a piece of furniture."

It's difficult to overstate the significance of these hearings. The techniques used to break Padilla have been standard operating procedure at Guantánamo Bay since the first prisoners arrived five years ago. They wore blackout goggles and sound-blocking headphones and were placed in extended isolation, interrupted by strobe lights and heavy metal music. These same practices have been documented in dozens of cases of "extraordinary rendition" carried out by the CIA, as well as in prisons in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Many have suffered the same symptoms as Padilla. According to James Yee, a former army Muslim chaplain at Guantánamo, there is an entire section of the prison called Delta Block for detainees who have been reduced to a delusional state. "They would respond to me in a childlike voice, talking complete nonsense. Many of them would loudly sing childish songs, repeating the song over and over." All the inmates of Delta Block were on 24-hour suicide watch.

War on terror? Try "War on Sanity". True on so many levels - now even literally.

Remember the story of the German citizen of the Nazi era? In brief synopsis, first they came after one group, and then after another, until there was no one to stand with the citizen. The lament being now the poor citizen stands alone.
Don't believe for one moment it can't happen to us. In fact, it is even more likely now that we have allowed the present corruptions of our government.

WILL THE COURT DO ITS JOB ?

It will be interesting to hear the defense on this one. What can possibly make it OK to treat another human being this way. I'm sure we'll find out. It's sickening to know that teams of lawyers are preparing a case that will prove that there was no wrongdoing on the part of the government. I guess there's no law that says they are required to have a conscience. They don't even have to be right. Someone will cover their butts. Thanks, ANNA

Democraps are doing shit of nothing to stop any of this. They have the will of the people behind them... they have the majority... and they piddle and putz about with non-binding resolutions on next to nothing.

I'm not ashamed to be an American. I'm ashamed to have a government (at all, really.. but thats another story) that is doing all of this and CANNOT BE STOPPED! If.. and that is a BIG if... we ever wrest power from the insane and the spineless so that we finally have some real sanity and good judgement in our government we will have to do some major overhauls on the powers granted to the branches... we will need, basically, a new constitutional convention. But that will never happen, as our government has grown too huge, our people too detatched from their government and their communities.. and too uneducated about how government is supposed to work and the history of government to ever be able to make an informed decision about any of this.

Does anyone actually wonder why I am an anarchist???

Bush's position on torture shows he's no Christian.

President Bush is no Christian. Born-again hypocrite, yes, but not a sincere follower of New Testament teachings as his stand on torture proves. Amazingly to me, no White House reporter has ever asked him, "Who would Jesus water-board?"

What will happen to them now?

When all is made known, and when these prisoners of psychological torture are at last released, where will they go? Who will take care of them? Who will pay for their care? What a sorry, sickening, humiliating mess my country has made of these men's lives. How many of them were innocent of any wrongdoing? Our government should now provide a safe haven for these crippled and shattered lives where they can be protected, maybe even rehabilitated. We, yes WE, you and I, who let our county do this to people, should be held accountable with our pocketbooks and tax dollars. They, the heads of government who did these things without our knowing and without our informed consent, should be held accountable with jail time of their own, starting with the President and Vice President and CIA operatives who engage, knowingly in these horrifying and inhumane procedures. If we don't hold those responsible accountable, the world will inevitably hold the U.S. in lower and lower regard, with consequences we will all pay, even those of us who worked hard to stop and prevent such proscribed evil. When our country lumps together "them" as "enemy combatants," it is only fair and logical "they" would see us all as their enemies. I am so ashamed of my country.

Mankind! This is what we do when we get power. It's comforting for the rest of us to blame disgusting Americans for these horrible evils, but the truth is THIS IS WHAT HUMANS DO given enough power. Just as discovering oil in a country seems like a blessing, yet turns out to do huge damage, just so "winning" the cold war has led America ever further from its noble ideals. How terribly sad that it's so easy to mislead voters.

Unfortunately the shame of being an American Citizen befalls all of us. Saddly we are not organized as masses and can really only bitterly complain in blogging arena's such as this.

On a positive note, at least the internet has given us the vision of real truths that have been cleverly spun by global media conglomerates- who are rapidly losing their viewership!

It is painfully obvious how disgusting our country is behaving with the powers that be running the show with their bullying tactics, torture, murder and mayhem leading us all blindly and savagely into world domination.

Ahhh, but for the sake of Karma, it will end quite badly- it may not happen in my lifetime, but rest assured- it will happen.

They are all liars and murderers- and they are so arrogant and full of shit that they don't care what we think. Probably in the not so distant future we will be jailed for blogging like this. The Bush Lied and They Died T-shirt is already illegal in certain states!

So I encourage EVERYONE to blog and express your feelings of disgust while you can! There is more room out, than in!

Why do they have to do these weird freakin ass things to people (they may be terrorists or whatever but they are the same physiological human being as anyone else)? Why don't they just shoot the guy and get it over with? Who's really the terrorist here? Can we fight terrorism while still remaining humans for God's sake? Do we have to lose our humanity in order to fight terrorism? Life is too short and precious to be inhuman even for a short while.

What amazes me is if you was the defendent and went to court with what is known about george you would be convicted on cheap evidence. But Impeachment is off the table with him so that tells me were pretty much fucked and I had better learn this new langauge alittle faster since relocating might come sooner than later.

Nothing – not trials, not expose articles, not verbal opposition from Congress, not toothless resolutions, have had any effect on the behaviour of the Bush administration for their entire reign of murderous incompetence, BECAUSE THEY DO NOT CARE WHAT ANYBODY THINKS OR SAYS!

The usual psychology, the need to at least partially conform to the needs of the many – that which forms the fabric of society – does not work on these people. THEY DON'T CARE!! You might as well be asking Hitler to shut off the ovens. This trial will be like all of the other exposes: it will spotlight outrageous abuses and inhumanity – and nothing...will...change.

Nixon was nearly impeached over Vietnem and Clinton was actually impeached over a blowjob, for God's sakes! Why are our "leaders" so afraid to impeach the Bush administration "gang of four," Bush, Cheney, Rice, and Gonzales, for the greatest abuse of power and most egregious assault on human rights in our history?! WHY?!

on a mirror watching the carnage of US soldiers and Iraquis
unfolding before their eyes on tv.
