This is one of the most disgusting things I've seen in a while. And simultaneously it's one of the most optimistic.

In this video (10 mins, transcript after the jump), Tony Snow is berated by the press for the White House's tepid and ineffectual response to the outrageous and pathetic treatment of our troops at the Walter Reed Army Hospital, as broken by the Washington Post in this series of articles: HERE and HERE.

In this extensive clip from Monday's press conference, Snow dodges the barrage of questions from reporters who are essentially asking: What the hell is wrong with this White House? How can you claim to support the troops but have such a disgusting and ineffectual response to one of the most evident and sad cases of lack of support?

(And why does everyone insist on mangling "mantra"? It's not Man-truh... it's Mahn-trah. Say it: Mahn.... Trah...)

The Army, over which the president is Commander-In-Chief, is not treating wounded soldiers well. All the president's spokesman can do is spout pathetic platitudes about "action items" and self-righteous bullshit about "fixing the problem" while passing the buck to the Department of Defense.

If the president is such a weakling that he can't (or won't) "light a fire" under his own DoD in defense of American troops he simply doesn't deserve to, as Snow says, look into the eyes of the families and soldiers.

That's one of the sickest parts of this display of cowardice and bottom-feeder morality. Snow waxes moronic about the president's unimpeachable and "emotional" commitment to the troops, telling everyone that his commitment "cannot" be questioned, even as he says that you're barking up the wrong tree if you're asking the president to do something.

I honestly don't know how these people get out of bed. I honestly don't.

The optimism I referred to at the top of this post is in the burgeoning skepticism and relentlessness of the press. I place many accolades at the keyboards of liberal bloggers who've managed to raise the bar for press aggressiveness by challenging, and in some cases, surpassing their coverage over the past couple of years. And due in no small part to Press insistence, the Fix Is In at Walter Reed. Shame and pressure is all this administration responds to...

Full transcript after the jump...Q The administration's mantra for a long time has been "support the troops." What is the reaction, then, when you read this series of stories in The Washington Post about troops coming home from Iraq, Afghanistan and being treated so poorly, apparently, based on this long investigation? What's the President's reaction?

MR. SNOW: There are a couple of things. First, it's not a mantra. I would really choose words carefully. It's a commitment to support the troops. And the President, as you know, has visited the wounded many times at Walter Reed and we are concerned about it. And the people who --

Q Were you aware?

MR. SNOW: We are aware now, yes. And I would refer you to the Department of Defense, which I know is taking a very close look at it, too.

Look, the men and women who have gone and fought for our country over there, they deserve the best care.

Q So why has that not been guaranteed, then?

MR. SNOW: I'm not sure that -- you know, when you find a problem, you deal with it.

Q So you're saying the President learned about this from The Washington Post?

MR. SNOW: I don't know exactly where he learned it, but I can tell you that we believe that they deserve better. And, again, Ed, this is something where I'd suggest you give DoD a call, because I know they've taken a good, hard look at it.

Q Tony, can I follow on that? As Bob Dole might ask, where's the outrage?

MR. SNOW: There's plenty of outrage.

Q Is there?

MR. SNOW: Yes.

Q So the President responded how when he learned about this? What, specifically -- did he order something to be done?
