In Bush's War on Terror, Immigrants Are Both Soldiers and Targets

By Roberto Lovato, New America Media. Posted January 30, 2007.

The war on terror is morphing into a war on immigration, with immigrants finding themselves on both sides of the conflict.

Just three hours before President Bush delivered his State of the Union speech, my nephew, Eric, a former undocumented Salvadoran immigrant who is now stationed with the National Guard near the Afghan-Pakistani border, wrote me an email in Spanish. "A suicide bomber blew himself up at our front gate this morning. Ten people were killed, 15 wounded. I volunteered and helped pick up the dead and human remains. Esta bien feo esto (this is really ugly)."

I thought of Eric as I listened to President Bush trying to rally the country around his "new strategy" with words like, "The war on terror we fight today is a generational struggle that will continue long after you and I have turned our duties over to others."

Eric was born a child of war. I recall him as a boy in tattered jeans playing with toy guns while slightly older teenagers played out the latest insurgent and counterinsurgent military strategies in the jungles and mountains outside his hamlet. In an earlier phone call, Eric compared their struggle to the war he's now fighting. "The Taliban and Al Qaeda fight like the FMLN (the former guerillas in El Salavador). They strike for a time and then you don't see them for a long time until the next attack. It heats up and then it cools off." I've interviewed top strategists at West Point -- those who now guide Eric and other solders in the "new strategy" confirm Eric's insight.

When Bush tells us he will continue to prepare the country for what was going to be a "long war" -remember how the invasion of Afghanistan was first called "Operation Infinite Justice" before being renamed "Operation Enduring Freedom"? - I worry about Eric's son, who is not doing so well in his elementary school.

Little Juan plays with toy guns and goes to a poorly-funded public school whose administrators are required to give military recruiters students' names, phone numbers and other personal information under the No Child Left Behind Act requirements.

In his speech, Bush framed comprehensive immigration reform as a national security issue, one requiring policies that leave "border agents free to chase down drug smugglers and criminals and terrorists." If the "war on terror" lasts as long as Bush said it will, his message tells immigrant families like ours that the war on immigration will also last for generations to come.

When I mentioned to Eric that Bush would be talking about immigration during the speech, he told me, "I don't like to talk about politics, Tío." After I told him I understood, he did, however, tell me, "They (the National Guard) asked me if I want to go protect the border after I get back." "What do you think? You gonna do it?" I asked. He remained silent, as if weighing his words for an audience larger than just me.

We went on to talk about bringing back beautiful Afghan rugs for my folks' anniversary and going to dance salsa when he next visits me in New York. From the sound of his voice, he seemed to be struggling to come to grips with how war has shaped his short life in so many different ways. "You know what?" he confided as we said our "hasta pronto" goodbyes, "there's no way I'm going to the (U.S.-Mexico) border."

Before I could ask him if it had anything to do with Bush, immigration, the war and the like, he said, "All that's political bullshit."

Digg!

He will go to the border and be meaner than the white people

who are working the border. The sad fact is that throughout history the 'chosen' minorities become even more exploitative than the masters. Think of how the 'coyotes' abuse their own. Think of the infamous examples of 'house niggers' versus 'field hands'. Think about the Nazi that had Jewish blood became even more anti-jew. Think of how women can run exploitive prostitution rings. Remember that some of the recent border patrol folks punished for abuses were hispanic.

That's where Bush gets his recruits these days - what a godawfulmess. In any case, I imagine that a good fraction of the people in the military are sick of this as well.

Ignore the albrechtkrausse creep - this is someone who also calls for the development and use of biological weapons - another stupid bloodthirsty warmonger who has no idea what war really means. Why don't you head off to the Mideast, albert, and see how you feel after picking up the pieces of ten blown-apart bodies with your own hands...

War On Immigration? Yeah, Ok - Whatever Alternet . . .

"If the "war on terror" lasts as long as Bush said it will, his message tells immigrant families like ours that the war on immigration will also last for generations to come."

Well I have to say, this was a new twist on a familiar theme: Latino as victim (nothing new there), and now, pawn in a galactic conspiracy aimed at turning Latinos against one another after they've done our bidding on the battlefield. I have to say, Alternet is pulling out all the stops for what is obviously a pro-amnesty, open border stance. Is there some legislation being rammed through Congress at the moment?

Would it be too much to ask Alternet to run a piece about, oh I don't know, blacks being overrepresented in the military? Meanwhile, Latinos are underrepresented but are given the spotlight once again and portrayed as *sigh* victims to boot.

"Little Juan plays with toy guns and goes to a poorly-funded public school whose administrators are required to give military recruiters students' names, phone numbers and other personal information under the No Child Left Behind Act requirements."

Alas, let's hope little Juan doesn't become another foot soldier in what's sure to develop into the next big issue for the Latino community. A Manchurian, er, Mexican Candidate brainwashing scheme aimed at turning returning soldiers against their own friends and families . . .

Immigrants are the one's that came here legally. If you came to this country illegally you are terrorist and should be treated as such. If you dont like that, we can call you drug dealer. Because if you use not abuse it dont matter they will take all your rights even test your bodily fuilds for trace elements of a substance . So why should laws like that be inforced on me, but poor terrorist(illegals) make demands and have them meant.

I don't get this article. I understand the story but WTF? I'm sorry "Juan" had a crappy childhood. I'm sorry our military focuses on the poor and desperate for recruits. It sucks being poor. I know--I'm damn poor myself. But I feel just as much for the Africans dying in Danfur and the women exploited everywhere as I do for the people living in poverty in Mexico. There's a lot of poverty and desperation everywhere. I don't feel sorry for illegal aliens--I feel sorrier for those people doing the right thing and trying legal methods and getting no where.

It is doubtful that soldiers will function as police in the US - it's against the law. Unless an order is illegal, he should do as ordered. He did volunteer, right??

If they're killing Iraqis for "documentation," what the hell are knee-jerk liberals pushing this phony disguised-amnesty BS for anyway??

Salvadoran's to fight in Iraq

Yes Salvadorans are being enlisted to fight in George W. Bush's war in Iraq. I talked to a guy on the bus yesterday who is from El Salvador. He said my, "perople are going to fight in Iraq." So if terrorism is comming to El Salvador it is becasue Salvadorans are percieved as George W. Bush's soldiers by Iraqi soldiers fighting to hold on to their homeland. Congress needs to withdraw any money already earmarked for escalation of hostilities in Iraq. George W. Bush needs to be brought to justice.
