The 'War on Terror' Is Really the War on Our Republic

From the beginning of the "war on terror," George W. Bush has lied to the American people about the goals, motivation and even the identity of the enemy -- a propaganda exercise that continued through his 2007 State of the Union Address and that is sounding the death knell for the Republic. Since 2001, rather than focusing on the al Qaeda Sunni fundamentalist terrorists behind the 9/11 attacks, Bush has expanded the conflict exponentially -- tossing in unrelated enemies such as Iraq's secular dictator Saddam Hussein, Shiite-led Iran, Syria and Islamic militants opposed to Israel, like Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza.

In effect, Bush has transformed what began as a definable military objective -- the defeat of "terrorist groups with global reach" -- into an endless war against what he regards as evil, a conflict so vague that it is claiming as collateral damage America's "unalienable rights" and the Founders' checks and balances on the powers of the Executive. In Bush's State of the Union speech on Jan. 23, there could be heard a requiem for the Republic.

"The evil that inspired and rejoiced in 9/11 is still at work in the world. And so long as that's the case, America is still a nation at war," Bush told Congress. But that "evil" will always be "at work in the world," so America will always be "a nation at war" and thus, under Bush's theories of unlimited Commander-in-Chief powers, the American Republic will be banished permanently.

Bluntly put, Bush and his neoconservative legal advisers don't believe in the "unalienable rights" guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution, /www.consortiumnews.com/2007/011807.html">including ones as fundamental as the habeas corpus right to a fair trial and protections against warrantless searches and seizures. The Bush administration may make grudging concessions in these areas when faced with determined opposition in the courts or from the public, but they hold these liberties to be subordinate to Bush's "plenary" -- or unlimited -- powers as Commander in Chief. Beyond this disdain for fundamental American liberties, Bush has contempt for any meaningful public debate. Though he talks about compromise and consultation, his view of national unity is to have everyone shut up and get in line behind him, "the Decider."

Since the 9/11 attacks, Bush has overseen a bare-knuckled political strategy of bullying anyone who disagrees with him and marginalizing their voices. From the Dixie Chicks to former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, from France to United Nations weapons inspectors, those who have dared to cross the President have faced ridicule and reprisals.

These ugly attacks have become so much a part of the American political landscape that the news media treats them as unexceptional, as if it's normal for a President to coordinate with powerful media allies to silence dissent. For instance, there was no media outcry in April 2003 when Bush gave a wink and a nod to a retaliatory boycott against the three-woman Dixie Chicks band because the lead singer, Natalie Maines, had criticized the President. "They shouldn't have their feelings hurt just because some people don't want to buy their records when they speak out," Bush said. "Freedom is a two-way street."

So, instead of encouraging a full-and-free debate about an issue as important as war and peace, Bush made clear that he saw nothing wrong with his followers punishing Americans who disagree with him.

"Democrat Party"

While Bush may have softened his belligerent style slightly since the Republican defeat in the November 2006 elections, he still couldn't muster enough politeness to refer to the "Democratic" Party in his State of the Union.

For years, tough-talking Republicans have made it a point of insult to drop the "-ic" and use "Democrat" as the adjective. This phrasing has become a mark of the swaggering Republicans who have dominated this era of U.S. politics. It's the partisan equivalent of willfully mispronouncing the foreign-sounding name of a disliked neighbor. So, even as Bush was supposedly trying to be gracious to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, he couldn't stop himself from congratulating the "Democrat majority."

An excellent summary of the errors of the US approach to the problems of the middle East. As a European currently living in the Middle East, I am unable to decide if the Bush administration's policies are driven by pure ignorance or by ideological blindness.

Of the two, the latter is more frightening, as this would mean the Bush and Cheney etc actually believe the BS that they are spouting, which makes any attempt at rational discussion pointless.

The Bushco's attidude vis a vis is Hamas is a case in point. Having been elected democratically, The White House and Israel cut off funding for the Palestine authority, thereby creating a climate conducive to promotion of armed conflict, whereas history has shown that when "terrorists" eventually have to govern, they are constrained to find a different route. See Arafat, Nelson Mandela, Begin etc , all of whom were labelled terrorists at some point.

So the scumbag let the truth slip out again. No wonder he has such disdain for the Constitution. It's disgustingly humorous when he villifies others that he seems to be making the most clear and accurate description of himself and his cohorts.

Yes, this pretty well sums it all up. God help us.

Actually, we'd better help ourselves -- and soon. Its still our country, and it can only be commandeered by Neocons if we allow it. Its not enough to just vote, we have to follow through and demand that our voices be heard. It's a bit more work, but that's true Democracy. It wasn't intended to be a passive form of government. "Government of the people, by the people and for the people" implies that the people take an active part in our destiny as a nation. I had forgotten this until Katrina. Katrina blew the lid off the lie.

Big march in Washington this Saturday... not a bad place to start. I've never done this before, but I'm getting on a bus and going. Tired of being ignored. Apparently, I have to go there in person, get in the faces of my 'representatives' and this horrific administration that has sold us all out.

Martin Luther King once said "Ultimately, an individual must stand up and be counted." One from Indiana. Check.

Globalist agenda

Look at the big picture:
- rising national debt owed to foreign creditors, eroding our autonomy
- the rapid export of manufacturing ( that we were made dependent on England for manufactured goods was one primary cause of the American revolution)
- the 'privitization' and deregulation of critical public owned resources and critical resources. 2/3 of public water systems are now manged by private multinational corporations, public toll roads are being sols off to private multinationals and many utilities are now owned by foreign corps.
- executive and legislative braches activly supporting open borders. Look at what the Council of foreign relations is promoting as the North American Union and what is occurring. Yet this organization is made up of private individuals.
- trade agreements that pass authority from the national level to organizations that are not representitive or responsive to the interests of citizens
- governance that subsidizes the interests of multinationals at the expense of citizens
- a tax system that has shifted the taxing more to wage earners and from people and corporations that generate wealth from investment.

Republican or Democrat is irrelevent. Both parties are advancing the same agenda and it is not in the interests of citizens of this country or citizens of other countries.

"Some in this chamber are new to the House and Senate and I congratulate the Democrat majority."

It's Democratic not Democrat you fucking idiot!

"The economy is on the move."

Hard to argue with that statement. Exactly where it is moving to is a matter of debate.

"We must balance the federal budget - we can do so without raising taxes"

Words fail me.

"These past five years have given us a much clearer vision of the nature of this enemy - possessed by hatred and commanded by a harsh and narrow ideology".

An apt description of this disgusting administration.

"This is not the fight we entered in Iraq - but this is the fight we are in."

Ummm...yeah...The gight we entered was a search for weapons of mass destruction that every thinking person in America - all twelve of us - knew weren't there.

"Ladies and gentlemen, nothing is more important in our history than for America to succeed in the Middle East, to succeed in Iraq and to spare the American people from the danger."

Grammatical redundancies aside, American servicemen and woman could have been spared from a whole lot of danger had the president of the United States not made the stupidest military blunder in history by attacking Iraq in the first place.

As the late, great Hunter S. Thompson once said, "When the going get weird, the weird turn pro".

Pray for peace.

CORPORATOCRACY, "WINNING", AND THE SURVIVAL OF THE PLANET

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
There are things that have now become clear to millions of people here and around the world.

1. As it is throughout the world, there exists no real government by the people, for the people.
This country has been overtaken by enormous businesses and a number of family dynasties. This has happened over the last 5000 years just about everywhere on the planet.

2. This means that OUR interests are not much of a concern to them. It means their agenda is all that is moving forward.

3. What is and has been their agenda? It is the agenda of Empire - global domination. It is the agenda of concentrating all the wealth into fewer and fewer hands until it is tightly controlled by a small number of "leaders".

4. How is this happening? Control of resources, control of the means of production, control of agriculture, control of human activity, reductions or strict control of freedom of speech, travel, and assembly, and the full mixing of business and the military.

CAN THEY "WIN"?

1. While they believe being No. 1 is the only important action, no, they cannot win. The world's citizens will not stand by and be dominated in this way. It is a deadly game in which there will be 100% losers.

2. On the way to the completion of their agenda to dominate, we will have nothing but wars and destruction as the world's countries and villages and citizens resist.

A DYING PLANET

1. The Earth cannot stay healthy and we cannot survive this path of greed and destruction.

2. We were born into a world of amazing bounty and beauty and a world of earthly challenges. We mistakenly believed it was our "duty" to conquer this world. We couldn't have been more wrong.

2. The true challenge to humanity is to learn to live successfully within the earth's great bounty and to maintain it healthfully and sustainably. We were born to be gardeners, not destroyers.

3. The choices we make, and we must make them now, will determine no less than the success of the human species.

4. This will be our last chance to decide how we are to be, and IF we are to be. We are supposedly the ones with the big brain. If we can connect it to our hearts and souls then we can make the chnges within ourselves that will enable us to have a future.

Robert is exactly right. The war on terror is a war to replace our republic with a rogue security state. But, what form of state is that? It is a dictatorial international supremacy. That is the fundamental premise of the fascist state. Bush and the neo-cons are fascists with a new look and new lies. Now they talk about freedom and democracy as if we the people had no idea what freedom and democracy really are.

More significantly, however, Bush continues to demean the Constitution. Despite having sworn "to preserve, defend and uphold the Constitution" as his preeminent duty, Bush keeps insisting that the highest obligation of government is to keep the people safe.

Strange emphasis, given Bush's miserable failure to protect America on September 11, 2001...

Why were Democrats applauding?

Parry's analysis is incisive and on the mark. Bush has used patriotic rhetoric in masking his desire for endless war to consolidate executive power and ensure world domination for corporate interests. In November we had an election that repudiated Bush's goals, giving Democrats majorities in both houses of Congress. So why were Democrats applauding when Bush uttered more nonsense in his State of the Union speech? At the very least, they should have been sitting on their hands, but catcalls would have been more appropriate.

Why is that? Are the heads of all major news agencies and the leaders of all large corporations working in unison and with complete understanding of what they are doing to dismantle constitutional democracy in the United States? Do they believe that our democracy is outdated and must be replaced by a system more compatible with the global economy?

Visa Denied:
How Anti-Arab Visa Policies Destroy US Exports, Jobs and Higher Education
In the aftermath of 9/11 US visa processing in the Arab world has ground to a halt. US consulates formerly striving to outsource key visa processes to travel agencies before the terror attacks are now paralyzed and fearful. Under funded and insufficient security review processes leave Arab executives, prospective students, and vacation travelers in limbo for years or looking for alternative destinations. Shabby treatment of those who successfully run the visa gauntlet leaves many vowing never to return to the US. How much has it cost? The damage assessment is now in:

Total US manufacturing jobs sustained by Arab market demand reached 215,000 in the year 2005, but could have been 420,000 with more effective and non-discriminatory US visa policies.

Arab business and tourist travelers remained at half their 2001 levels, creating five year travel related service losses of $1.775 billion and 4,126 potential service jobs.

In 2005 Arab student enrollment in the US higher education system reached only 66% of the 2001 level. The US higher education system lost $1.989 billion in revenue and 9,000 education and support service jobs.

This is a very good article, but there is one very serious problem, and it relates to understanding how the stage was set for the War on the Republic.

Basically, the phrase "the 9/11 attacks" needs to be replaced by the phrase "the Fall 2001 terror attacks" - that means discussing the high-tech weaponized Ames strain anthrax powder that was sent through the mail to three media outlets, and to two Democratic Congress members. This served to amplify the fear level across the country in the months following 9/11 and more or less guaranteed passage of the Patriot Act; everyone should also recall Colin Powell holding up a vial of 'simulated anthrax powder' at his United Nations speech, when he claimed that his boss had 'definitive evidence of Saddam's possession of weapons of mass destruction'.

Obviously, the anthrax attacks are a spooky topic, and the FBI seems to have gone out of it's way to cover up the case. Nixon claimed that the US biowarfare program was shut down in 1969, but there is growing evidence that the core of the program was preserved in British (Porton Down) and private sector government contracting firms like Huntingdon Life Sciences and Battelle Memorial Institute. Examining these connections also leads to the troubling relevation that Saddam Hussein was supplied with chemical and biological warfare facilities in the 1980's by US and British firms with knowledge in this area.

Of course, it's not just the US; equally troubling is the relevation of the vast Soviet biowarfare program developed in the 70's and 80's (Biopreparat); information about this was only revealed when two Soviet biowarfare scientists defected to the West in the late 80's.

In fact, if you want to look at dark chapters in US CIA history, you need only consider the case of Frank Olsen, a biowarfare specialist at the US Army's Special Operations Division in 1953 (Fort Detrick, MD) who was unwittingly dosed with LSD by Dr. Sidney Gottlieb, head of the CIA/Army program known as MK-ULTRA (itself just a subsidiary of the Army biowarfare program known as MK-NAOMI). Frank Olsen had, according to his co-workers, many doubts about the US biowarfare program, and his LSD experience apparently crystallized these concerns. The official story is that he threw himself out of the window of a New York hotel after he was sent to visit a CIA psychiatrist, but the more probable explanation is that he was killed and thrown through the window; this is all alluded to in the recent film, "The Good Shepherd".

Getting back to the present, it is important that the recent anthrax attacks be the subject of a complete Congressional investigation into the FBI's behavior in this case, as well as to the biowarfare programs conducted in the late 90's by the Army, the CIA, Battelle Memorial Institute, and SAIC: Projects Clear Vision, Bacchus and Jefferson, as well as the details of the fairly secretive "Project Bioshield program"

You cannot understand the present unless you understand the past.

By the way, Rumsfeld, ex-CEO of Searles Pharmaceuticals, was also involved in the 'swine flu' scare of 1976 and the recent 'avian flu' scare - if you're wondering what became of Rummy, he's set up as a "Pentagon consultant" along with his sidekick Stephen Cambone and a handful of Pentagon-paid staffers...

Excellent article. Bush is really simply the mouthpiece for the neocons who are in charge. Their goal, as stated in their two documents on the web, one prepared for Israel then another for Clinton, in the best interest of Israel , is to have the US cause mayhem in the middle east. Bush is the key to their success, however, because of his arrogance, recklessness, and mindless ignorance. Extrordinary good luck for the neocons and Israel. The US will pay for it in lives and resources for generations.

It is remarkable how, in today's polarized political scene, irrational diatribes like this, confusing opinion for fact, and subtly manipulating language and meaning, have become the coin of the realm. By now, having repeated these mostly empty mantras again and again, mistakes have become lies, deaths caused by insurgents and terrorists can be attributed to the United States, and tyrants (e.g., Saddam Hussein) become sugar plums.

Someone or some thing profits from these distortions, but certainly not the average voter or the enlightened well-being of the country. This isn't a right or left issue; it's non-denominational fraud. I, for one, have had enough.

Perhaps the biggest fraud is that from the beginning Bush tried very hard to tie Osama and Al Queda in with Iraq. Even when the President's own people and agencies could not make the connection, Bush still tried. In fact, from the beginning, it was shown how much Saddam hated Osama and the religious fundamentalist, they were probably more his eneny then even America's. The fact that Bush still alludes to Iraq as fighting "terrorists" retreats back towards this original fraudulent connection. But, the American people are no longer buying it, buying the lies and the fraud, and it shows.
