Dobson Disses McCain [AUDIO/VIDEO]

I would not vote for John McCain under any circumstances.

Who does a guy have to sidle up to for the Christian Right to give its stamp of approval?

My Lord, McCain ate s**t by the bucketloads when he spit-shined Jerry Falwell's boots a few months ago, but if you give the audio clip to the right a quick listen you'll hear James Dobson, head of Focus on the Family, say: I would not vote for John McCain under any circumstances.

Ooof.

This could be a fatal blow for McCain as Dobson is considered by many to be the nation's most powerful evangelical. While the political weight and unity of evangelicals may be overstated, it's difficult to conceive of a Republican going anywhere without significant evangelical support.

Two guesses why Dobson's disgusted...

You got it: the gays. McCain attempted to ride the fence by claiming first that he thinks gay people ought to be able to get married only to revise it after the commercial break (and some frantic finger across the throat motions from his handlers, no doubt). Watch the double take in the first video to see why he got what anyone who attempts to ride a fence gets...

Here's the irony, though. I found this clip from a gleeful post on the "Evangelicals for Mitt [Romney]" site. Only, Mitt's got some skeletons in his Religious Right-pandering closet. For his sake I hope skeletons are the only thing in that particular room... Watch the second clip from a 1994 debate with Ted Kennedy that could make it hard for Romney in '08 -- or at least for the Evangelicals for Romney folks...
