The Forbidden Racial Zone

By Earl Ofari Hutchinson, AlterNet. Posted January 3, 2007.

Believe it or not, in America, in 2007, there's a forbidden zone where blacks risk death if they enter.

There's no physical sign, barrier, or even a chalk line that marks the zone where a black can't enter at the risk of grave harm. But the zone is there, and blacks know that if they enter it, they can be beat, shot at, or killed. The twist is that the forbidden zone is not in a redneck, backwoods, and Deep South town during the rigid and violent Jim Crow segregation era.

The bigger twist is that the Klan, Neo-Nazis, racist skinheads, and bikers didn't establish the racially restrictive zone. Purported Latino gang members established it. The forbidden zone is in a small, mixed ethnic bedroom community in Los Angeles. The year is 2007, not 1947.

A black family that recently fled the community in fear for their lives bluntly told a reporter that they left because blacks there are scared to death. In the past year, the hate terror escalated to the point where blacks tell tormenting tales of being harried when they leave their homes, or their children walk to school. They say that they are forbidden to go into a park, and a convenience store.

This is not a bad case of racial paranoia run amok. Blacks have been taunted, harassed, beaten and shot at in this community. But the tragic murder of a 14-year-old black girl and the wounding of two other young blacks in the forbidden zone sparked anguish, rage, and finally drew some local media attention.

The murder drew gasps of disbelieve that in America in 2007 in a big, Northern cosmopolitan city, with a Latino mayor, and that routinely back pats itself for its ethnic diversity, there is an entire area that blacks are banned from on pain of injury or death at the hands of other non-whites. And city officials seem powerless to do anything about it.

Though two reputed Latino gang members are charged with the teen's murder, and were slapped with a hate crime charge, the arrest and the hate charge didn't calm the jitters and fears of blacks that live there. Even after the arrests, a number of blacks still said that they planned to get out of the area as soon as they could.

Latino on black (and black on Latino) violence is hardly an aberration in Los Angeles (and other places). According to police reports, there have been more than a dozen murder attempts in other parts of Los Angeles by alleged Latino gang members on mostly young blacks that have no known gang involvement in the latter part of 2006. A Los Angeles County Human Relations Commission report on hate violence in 2005 found that overall Latinos committed nearly half of the hate attacks in the County, while blacks committed thirty percent of the hate attacks. But when it's Latino and black violence, the figure for hate violence soars. Latinos and blacks committed the bulk of the racially motivated hate attacks against each other.

The easy explanation for the hate terror is that the perpetrators are bored, restless, disaffected, jobless, untutored, violence prone gang members, and the violence is a twisted response to racism and deprivation. The attacks no doubt are deliberately designed by the gang hate purveyors to send the message to blacks that this is our turf, and you're an interloper. But despite arrests, police crackdowns, gang injunctions, assorted anti-violence marches and rallies, and community peace efforts, the black and Latino low intensity battle has shown no sign of abating.

Then there's the vehemence of the racial hate. The dirty, and painful secret is that blacks and Latinos can be racist, maybe even more racist than whites, toward each other. It's easy to see why. Many Latinos fail to understand the complexity and severity of the black experience. They frequently bash blacks for their poverty or type them as clowns, buffoons and crooks. Some routinely repeat the same vicious anti-black epithets as racist whites. The color complex reinforces the notion that blacks are a racial and competitive threat, and any distancing, ostracism, avoidance, and even violence is a rational response to keep blacks at arms length.

On the other side, some blacks feed the same myths and racial stereotypes, and bash Latinos as anti-black, and violence prone, gangsters that are a menace, as well as ethnic and economic competitors. The warped misconceptions and fears have so far trumped the loud calls and efforts by black and Latino activists and many residents for unity and peace. The murder of a black teen, and the gradual dawning that racially motivated hate attacks are happening right under the noses of a slumbering, maybe indifferent public, and impotent city officials, in a modern-day city like Los Angeles, did touch a mild nerve of disgust and ignite faint demands for action.

But that's not nearly enough to erase the shame that, in America, in 2007, there is a zone in a big city where blacks can only enter at mortal peril. And that zone isn't marked by a burning cross or guarded by men in menacing white sheets and hoods.

Digg!

Treat the city as garbage and its inhabitants will behave like junk yard dogs.

I know that LA is your home, Dr. Earl, and so the condition you describe presses on you more personally. But such conditions, so I hear, have existed in other major cities for a long time. New York City, for instance, has its ethnic enclaves where not everyone is welcome.

The larger problem is that suburban sprawl, "where the money is," has left cities politically weak. It's been a while since I left the Midwest, but at that time Detroit and Cleveland, for instance, were still vital and livable places. I have not been back, but from what I read there's not much reason to go back there.

Isn't it called "urban decay"? California housing shortages are endemic. Overpopulation is enormous. The Los Angeles public schools are a disaster. Despite Mayor Villeriagosa's brave talk, Los Angeles's core is rotten and getting more so every day.

Sorry, but nobody cares about the city except for those who live there. Even we, who live there, tend to treat our cities with the same contempt as the rest of the world treats us.

Civic pride has been replaced by ethnic pride. When we aren't going there together, then we try to go our separate ways. It never works. But what else can we do when our leadership works for the wealthy, who don't live in the city?

Gangs, crime, violence: same as it has been now for a long, long time. It's because of taxation without representation, just as it was 250+ years ago. No mysteries. Same old, same old.

It is sad to see the poor fighting each other...

...and I see it in my own city of Chicago, where historically, different Latino groups fight each other (Cubans vs. Mexicans vs. Puerto Ricans).
And in the 1940's, the working class blacks & immigrant Polish, Irish & Italians all fought each other (again, I'm thinking of Chicago, but this probably happened in other cities as well).
As long as the "American Dream" incorporates the idea that each of us is independent, rather than INTERdependent, we will have such struggles. Of course, those who are in the upper echelons of society, or who've already achieved the "Dream", do not have to fight at this level.

Blacks vs Latinos in L. A. and elsewhere

Just wondering: How much of this animosity is fueled by the gang rivalries that are encouraged by State and some Federal officials in our prisons? Prison officials, especial guards, have long fostered prison gangs as a means of control and "self-policing" within prisons. Inadequate funding of prisons has left guard corps with too few personnel and woefully inadequate training. The extension of prison culture into our communities is a natural outcome of the way we treat inmates.

That´s the plan, Folks. If we are fighting amongst ourselves then we do not notice the razor wire fences being built around ourselves.

That the priveledged lap dogs in society are willing to have their gated communities where you can definitely be injured or killed if you go there without permission, but for us here on the bottom to be fighting each other, is the height of stupidity.

Keep supporting illegal immigration progressives

and you'll see more conflict between blacks and latinos in 'urban' areas. Also, the final chapter being that blacks will disappear from public view and lose any political power and jobs they've managed to gain dispite adversity. You've already seen the 'whites' court the hispanic vote and this marginalises the 'black' vote even more. Likewise all the 'talking heads' about the "jobs Americans (read blacks and poor whites) won't do".

So the illegal immigration coupled with the far higher birthrate of the hispancis will mean that blacks will lose out. Keep in mind also that many hispanics consider themselves 'white' (and its legal to do so according to the federal government's own regulations.)

Diversity

Don't you see this situation as a product of the emphasis on the differences of
people and lauding these differences in a frenzy of social engineering called "Diversity".
The "melting pot" that the US was, has been replaced by the "tossed salad" that describes
"Diversity".
I am sure "diversity" has it's root in the same place as "division, divide".
From a goverment perspective, it is easier to control a divided population that is
continously fighting among itself than a homogenous group with visible priorities and
cohesive goals.

creates drug warriors. Much of the conflict is the result of of the 'war on drugs'. The gangs in prison which are mainly there because of the war on drugs carry their prison turf battles back to the city when released.

This does not seem to trouble the powers that be who are financially interested in the status quo.

Another good reason to reduce immigration

This story is not unusual, unfortunately. The stunning rise in sheer numbers of immigrants, both legal and, especially, illegal, is the problem which is fueling the rise in gangs. Our useless government sits on its hands while millions of illegal aliens pour across the border, and we have no idea who all these people are. We have allowed ourselves to be brainwashed by the "multiculturalists" into acquiescence as our cities are overrun by aliens. The fact that they are here illegally is proof that they are not law-abiding, so the rise in gang membership shouldn't surprise anyone.

If we want to keep our country from disintegrating into a Third World-style nation, we need to seal our borders now and then figure out what to do with the millions of illegal aliens already here. The word "deportation" comes to mind.

That must mean its time to bring up illegal immigration...

If I could think for myself I might realize that the vast majority of “Latinos” are not only here legally but they are citizens.

The fact that there are over 41 million “Latinos” here legally might mean something if I didn’t know that of the 9 million illegal immigrants almost 7 million are Latino.

So if the majority of illegal immigrants are Latino then the majority of Latinos must be illegal immigrants, numbers be damned. I also can’t forget that any issue that even remotely involves a Latino must be immigration related.

I caught me thinking for myself once, but don’t worry my good white friends Bill O and Lou D set me right.

Excuse me now I need to go blame more problems on my fellow workers cause there skin color is different and my boss tells me its their fault he has to treat me like sh*t.

Not so damn fast! What is the gender mostly involved in the LA situation? Males! What would it be like if the reverse were true? Now, I'm sure there are a few females seeking male approval by participating but they don't even register on the gender scale of violence. Imagine hundreds of females in the street rioting and gang-banging instead of males. It's just too alien a concept to consider, isn't it? Too bizarre, right? Start with a curfew from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. for all males, everywhere in the world. Yeah, dudes can't leave the house unless accompanied by a responsible female. Makes me wish "1984" had been written by a "Georgina" Orwell.

I dig men, a lot, but I have a healthy criticism for the behavior of this ol' tomcat behavior of territorialism, marking their turf. Yeah, feline behavior isn't it? I say paint all the jails and prisons pink and have jail clothing in various shades of pink. It's hard to be testosterone-crazed when a dude is wearing pink. They're doing it in Texas, of all places. And they sure are saving a lot of money on, uh, band-aids.

LA is fairly large. Is he talking the city or county? It's always been segregated to some extent. More segregated than any other place I have been in the country.

This story doesn't hold much weight if Hutchinson doesn't mention any names. It's as if he is writing for the Enquirer. Nation of Islam would run this.

Imagine what could be accomplished if all people of color who are poor got united and pushed for a better life for each other. America would be transformed into a much better country. I am a poverty level white guy and white is also a color. Dr. Martin Luther King said so many things so very well, and he was not just speaking about blacks, he was speaking about all people with low incomes. I have three college degrees and live below the poverty level. If people would read King's speech, written from prison during the sanitation workers strike people would be amazed because it applies now more than ever. This whole damn thing is really an economic issue far more than anything else. There are the haves while most of us are the have-nots. As Bush and the republicans force more and more middle class people into struggling for economic survival push back will become more widespread, FAR more widespread. As long as we all fight each other when we should be fighting the 8100 families that control 90% of america's wealth nothing will ever change.

And thats a fact jack

The comments of OldSkeptic and Sojourner are absolutely on point. Moreover,
when it comes to the behavior that USA elite have fostered and cultivated, were it not for their unbounded racist arrogance and insatiable craving to tongue
every last speck of potential profit from the most wretched and desperate haunts of the human condition; the following incident would have served as a
SHREIKING WAKE UP call to bring an end to the madness of the illegal alien commerce:
linked text
But, of course it didn't....and yet another of the warning signs of a corrupt and malig-
nant economic system operatinq within a putrefying dysfunctional social 'order' goes
unheeded.
HOWEVER, the instant situation does not require a possibly strained speculation as to the citizenship status of the assailants somehow having an (unspecified) bearing on
their murderous frame of mind.
The former slave status of the black American diaspora is singularly unique amongst
USA immigrant ethnic or racial cohorts. This status servers to dispose the principal contemporary (continuing) oppressor to a 'throwback' mindset of contempt for a slave.
Immigrants observe this attitude in the whites with whom they wish to curry favor, and
'monkey imitate' in an effort to 'flatter'.
But I think the murderers of this fourteen year old child were probably acting in
consideration of her simply as hapless 'target of opportunity' prey for their depravity..
and nothing more.
They are sociopathic vermin...they should be executed...after a( brief) trial of course.
This LA black community should mobilize to protect and defend itself against any
and all aggressors..foreign or domestic.
If these thugs understand that they can be made to fill body bags with their
family members (and themselves) faster than they can chug a '40...the nonsense
will stop...
Oh, BTW...where are the hulking menacing (presumably black) thugs who intimidated
the Black Man witness in tha Long Beach debacle??? Just wondering......

Try being a white kid in Detroit and see how quickly you learn which neighborhoods are off limits, lest you're beaten, raped, killed, etc for being white.
Better yet, try being visibly Muslim or Arab anywhere in America. You'll find out quickly enough that there are very few "safe" neighborhoods.
Above all, stop acting like this is some new phenomenon, an unprovoked evil perpetrated solely against the poor downtrodden blacks by other groups.
In addition to listing the grievances of the blacks who wish to move to a Latino neighborhood, why don't you take up the issue of how white people are routinely terrorized by blacks when they attempt to move into black neighborhoods?

I was shocked to hear "that many hispanics consider themselves 'white' (and its legal to do so according to the federal government's own regulations.)" this must be righted. We can't have people willy-nilly 'considering' themselves. Where will it end? We must arrest all who incorrectly fill out their racial group on application forms and send them to Gitmo. (Anyone know how to tell the diff between Koreans and Vietnamese btw?)

No names except a victim and a gang banger.

How can it be about race? Some people are scared to move to a neighborhood. That isn't race, that's selective policing.

You have tons of people paying for schools, military, prisons, and cops. They are not building more libraries in that area.

That's one of the main reason the riots happened in that area. It isn't about invisible barriers to race. It's about economic barriers.

Get those cops out of their new cars and start walking the beat. Their cars are a hinder them from meeting the public and crime prevention. Getting to a crime scene after the fact is pointless unless you are a prosecutor or an attorney.

How boldly stated by sooo many who know sooo much about imigration! If somethin's wrong between Latinos, and a small sample at that, and say blacks or whites, it MUST be about imigration. That's logical, right? All white collar crime commited by mostly white rich guys must be the fault of Meegrants too! In fact, the fact that I'm not married is cause of them meegrants!

So let's not understand the real problem of rich exploitation of the meegrant workers, sending of jobs overseas to 13 year old girls can work 12-16 hours for $2 dollars a day, the free tax holidays for the richest 1% in 'Merka, the red lining that forces even marginally well off minorities into poor areas, the fake that the richest country in the world allows poverty while buying billion dollar planes to kill people, CAUSE IT'S THE DANG MEEGRANTS FAULT. GOSH DANG OVERBREEDIN' DARKEES!! Hey, let's just sterilize them, it worked for the Injuns...

Seperation is the key
Posted by: Lesha on Jan 8, 2007 10:15 AM

Blacks have their own set of problems with self hate and unity and should work on uniting with each-other before trying unite with other people.Latinos have their own set of problems also not to mention those who have a negative view of blacks wither its justified or not.If there is a certain element within that group that has violent tendencies towards blacks and the majority does nothing to stop it,then why should we as blacks try to unite with these people? The following will only compound the problem and will not fix it in any fashion. According to those who attended a community meeting in the after math of the killing of Cheryl Green, most of the attendees were black while a few were Latino. If the majority of a particular community doesn't show up to work on these problems then it wouldn't be far fetch to say that to some degree they as a whole don't have a problem with blacks being targeted in these random killings by their people.Until blacks begin to unite and protect their communities from these senseless killings, other people will become more embolden to attack them regardless of their plea for peace.

Mexicans in general are peaceful people but in most cases like to identify with white people.
Blacks are only fooling themselves if they believe that it is to their benefit to unite with a culture(Latino) that is laced with an internal hatred towards blacks. In countries like Spain,Argentina,Mexico, and El-Salvador these countries have the deepest history of inflecting violence and hatred towards blacks. In Mexico it still popular to make art depicting blacks in a negative light similar to your Amos and Andy black face type of buffoonery.
Even Indians born and raised in Mexico are not looked at as equals not to mention how they treat their small black populace in that country.Even dark skinned Mexicans who posses a higher percentage of Indian blood are discriminated against by lighter skinned Mexicans who have closer ties to Spaniards and their belief system which of-course includes anti-black sentiments.

Not all Mexicans but some who move to this country carry with them the same values described in the following paragraph therefore it is not unusual hear about the violence that is taking place in certain areas of Los Angeles along with whats going on in jail in relation to the riots being reported from the news agencies.Although drugs and gangs are often affiliated with these reports of black and brown violence, the bigger theme is that race hatred towards blacks is more appropriate for this topic and that some Latinos when given the chance will try to do harm to blacks wither they are affiliated with a gang or if they are regular people going about their business. The incident that took place in Harbor City is nothing new,as matter of fact base on my experience and knowledge of the city places like:San Pedro,Wilmington,Lomita, Pacoima,San Bernidino,San Fernando,Van Nuys,North Hollywood,Canoga Park,Azusa and East-LA are places where blacks need to be careful when traveling and living because these are the places where they are more likely to face some type of confrontation with Latinos.

Although blacks inflect damage own their on communities through gang violence and drugs,
there is little to no history of blacks attacking other groups of people who move into their communities based on their race. The prof of the following can be seen in neighborhoods throughout So-Central that at one time were predominately black but are now Latino.

Once again this does not represent all Latinos but it only shows that some things have to change in both camps (black and brown) before there is any talk about unity. The only solution to this problem is separation and while it may not realistic now,it will become a forced reality sooner or later.

She and her family including her 5 year old son were uprooted from their New Orleans community. She was separated from her son and father while she and her mother Cynthia lived in emergency shelters in Baton Rogue where she had to have her wheelchair tied to her arm with a piece of string to keep people from stealing it as she slept.
