'Christian' Game Leaves Behind A Pile of Corpses

-- Left Behind: Eternal Forces game synopsis

It's been a long time coming, but this week I finally received the Christmas gift I've been waiting for for what seems like ages -- my "Left Behind: Eternal Forces" video game.

This is the first Christmas gift I've ever bought for myself. Normally, I hate Christmas. In fact, I make it a point each year to search out and print out all the news stories from around the world involving thefts from/desecrations of nativity scenes. When I'm finished, I plaster my office area with all the photos of the glum Yuletiders standing around the now-headless Josephs and Marys, and I make this news-mural my private sanctuary, the place I run to when the holidays (and particularly the holiday commercials) get to be too much to take.

The very happiest Christmas of my life, in fact, came two years ago, when some as-yet-unapprehended genius in Knoxville, Tennessee not only beheaded a nativity scene baby Jesus, and not only threw said head through a glass door, but scrawled an upside-down cross on Mary's chest and doused her face with dark paint. It's the paint on Mary's face that got me, and still gets me. What does that mean? What is the culprit trying to say? A great mystery. Every time I think I hate Christmas, I think of that person, and I realize that compared to him, I'm just a puppy fresh out of the womb, crawling around blind on the floor of the world. There is still a Long Way To Go, even for me.

This year's offerings, incidentally, are slightly above average. In Canada there is a developing serial crime story involving an enormous nativity scene in Old Montreal, a scene that goes up every year as part of the Fete de Noel. Last year, thieves boosted the baby Jesus; his body was never recovered. This forced the Fete organizers to literally anchor Jesus to his cradle this year. The precautions were to no avail, however, as this past weekend bandits sawed off the legs of several of the wise men at the knees. Now they are still wise, but about 30% shorter. Some of the huge fiberglass figures also had their eyes poked out. Joseph's cane was also stolen, pried out of his hands. I am amused by the image of a fiberglass Joseph, eyes completely blank and staring straight ahead, fighting and eventually losing a battle with a living human being to keep hold of his fake cane -- and ultimately left standing there in the dark night, empty hand extended.

Then there is this story in Naples: thieves made away with over a million Euros worth of figurines from a nativity scene in the Chiesa di San Nicola alla Carita church. Normally nativity thefts with a monetary motive don't really count for me, but this one was interesting because the only figures the thieves left behind were Jesus and a donkey -- apparently because they were worth significantly less than the others. This, to me, is a cheering holiday detail. So is the article I recently read in the Daily Southtown, one of the Chicago Sun-Times papers, which reported that General Foam Plastics, a North Carolina company that makes nativity scenes, has been besieged this year with calls for replacement Jesus dolls. The same story claimed that police in New Jersey found 27 stolen Jesus dolls in the back of a single car. The article, however, was staunchly pro-Jesus. "Christ is the center of our Christmas," it quoted one theft victim as saying. "You can steal him from our porch, but you can't steal him from our hearts."

This, certainly, is one of the downsides to the nativity-desecration phenomenon. Almost every community has one such incident and it almost always makes the town's local newspaper, accompanied by a sad-looking photo of the ravaged nativity, with its empty manger surrounded by a plastic-eyed Joseph and Mary staring blankly ahead in inanimate bereavement. The community subsequently makes a public appeal to the thief, usually a gothed-out teenager who ends up getting caught by a vigilant parent who finds an unexpected bounty while searching for junior's pot stash in his closet. The teen is then dragged by his eyebrow-stud across the street and forced to re-deposit little plastic Jesus in his manger, at which point the newspapers are contacted and the whole ordeal is re-sold to the community as a "Christmas miracle." You may even see this story reported as a "Second Coming." When I become Minister of the Interior in post-revolutionary America, the reporters who write those stories will be fitted with concrete moccasins and sent to work in logging camps in the Alaskan tundra.

Anyway, back to the Left Behind game, which is the first gift I've ever gotten that actually fills me with Holiday Spirit. For those of you who are not familiar with Left Behind, it is an enormously popular Christian book series which depicts an Armageddon scenario in which the true believers are whisked up to heaven at the Second Coming, literally vanishing out of thin air even as they do things like pilot commercial jet-liners, leaving the rest of us amoral nihilists on earth to bathe in our own blood and generally massacre each other. In the video game, the Believers roam a desecrated New York City landscape (it is highly amusing that both al-Qaeda and the makers of "Left Behind: Eternal Forces" chose to make their masterpiece against a canvas of a burning Manhattan) wasting the forces of the antichrist, leaving huge piles of bodies everywhere they go. It is hard to imagine a product that better encapsulates, in one package, the spirit of both modern American capitalism and modern American Christianity. If you have a serious gore Jones, it's also not a bad video game. The sound track (especially the "Street Fight, Main Theme" kicks ass.

Those of you who were not on the original Left Behind mailing list really missed out, as the emails the company sent out in anticipation of this video game launch are easily some of the greatest examples of unintentional comedy ever to grace the internet. From the start, the company asked its customers to assist them with prayer, and as such sent out regular "prayer requests," for instance this letter asking us to pray for a good reception at a Christian retail convention:

Left Behind Eternal Forces for the PC is getting closer to completion everyday, and we appreciate your prayers!

We would ask that you keep the Left Behind Games staff in your continued prayers as we get closer to our release date, from spiritual warfare, and protection for our families.

We will be attending the 2006 International Christian Retail Show in Colorado on April 10th to the 13th, please pray that God will bless our presence at his show.

The company was a little quiet after that, but as the release neared and it began focusing on the inevitably problematic marketing campaign, it increasingly asked for prayer help with its promotional efforts. Here's one from October:

Left Behind Prayer Requests:

  1. Wisdom as we prepare our promotional strategies
  2. Travel safety as our team attends meetings and interviews
  3. Unity as a team and that our efforts bring glory to our Lord

Thank you for keeping us in your prayers. God bless you!

As the launch neared, the requests began to be directed towards the reviewers:

Left Behind: Eternal Forces will be available at stores this weekend! Thank you for helping to make this happen. We are praising God! Please keep the game in your prayers.

  1. Critics and reviewers will give positive feedback on the game
  2. Church and youth leaders will see the potential of using the game as an outreach tool.
  3. Players will multiply as they invite their friends to play with them online.
  4. God will bless this game and it will honor Him.

But when the date arrived, the company's "Prayer Team leader," Annette Brown, began to get more and more specific in her corporate prayer goals:

  1. Pray God will put it on the heart of the consumers to purchase our product at select Walamart [sic] Stores (top 100 stores) that have our invetory [sic].
  2. Next weekend is the biggest shopping weekend of the year, pray the game hits record sales for PC Games.
  3. The press is still reviewing the game, pray they will be kind in their reviews.

I mean, how twisted do you have to be to pray that consumers will buy your product at select Wal-Mart stores? Wouldn't you hesitate and call a psychiatrist before sending that out into cyber-space?

The requests from Thanksgiving week:

Please pray that our sales will sky rocket this weekend. We have a big God that promises to surpass all that we could ask of Him.

Once reviewers got hold of the game, and started to point out the odd dichotomy between its supposedly Christian message and its corpse-strewn video landscape, the company began to pray for good media appearances:

Prayer requests:

  1. God will give Troy, Robilyn and Jeff wisdom during their many interviews.
  2. God will use these interviews to open the hearts and minds of the listeners to the true intentions and purpose of the game.
  3. God will bless us as we develop and choose our sales force.

Anyway, if you haven't bought it already, I strongly advise everyone reading this to log on to leftbehind.com and buy the game. It is the perfect American holiday gift. Celebrate the birth of Jesus by wasting dozens of people at a time, using a provocative variety of Christ-sanctioned weapons! You can even operate tanks to destroy whole areas of New York City! Who knows, you might even get to kill Ethan Hawke ("slumming" in a ball cap and dirty jeans) in a Marxist bookstore-coffeeshop on 8th street! Kill, kill, kill!

Merry Christmas, America.

...I think you should do what makes ya' happy. If that's geeking out in front of a video game...well...hallelujah? (did i spell that right?)

And, chasing the silly pixels is a fair sight safer than vandalizing with a butcher knife the neighbor's nativity display, the owner of which might be old, have poor eyesight, and mistake an interloper for a violent, knife-wielding intruder rather than just a degenerate vandal intent on decapitating TLBJ, and legally shoot a body dead in defense.

As a side note, there are much better video games one could spend one's hard-earned money and time on, if one chooses to engage in hardware escapism.

God is love, Jesus is saviour! Blow stuff up in the name of Jesus Christ!

Sounds to me like they're starting boot camp early.

More hypocrisy from the religious right. They should read their bibles more and shove them down our heathen throats less.

What's going on at Rolling Stone, Matt? Have you missed a few deadlines, or is Jan getting heat from the 9?11 Truthers? I mean, Dickinson has buried your material under a pile of 'safe' DNC-approved "Hillary-loves-puppies-and-cancer-kids" stuff.

Or is it more personal? A little glug-glug? A little puff-puff? A little polonium?

(By the way, this is a great piece. AND, I just found a password/cheat page through gamespot.com that upgrades the 'Special Abilities' options for my "Focus-On-The-Family" sniper team to include "Purchase Indulgence From Clergy." Now my team can unwind from a tough day slaughtering un-believers with a trip to "The Holy Pole" strip club.)

I don't get it (but then, I'm obviously a heathen.) If the true believers were all whisked immediately up to heaven, who are these rampaging Christians in New York - thumpers still trying to earn a late 'whisk-away' ticket?

This religious stuff is so complicated.

TITLE SHOULD HAVE BEEN EVANGELICAL GAME, NOT CHRISTIAN GAME

It is sad when someone stereotypes all "right wing" Christians as belonging to the Evangelical/Left Behind movement. FWIW, I have signed a petition asking major retail outlets NOT to carry this sick game. As a Mormon, many evangelicals don't even consider me a Christian but a servant of Satan so I suppose I'd be blown away too.

To HMMMMM:

I don't blame you for being bewildered. When folks distort Biblical teachings there usually is confusion. FYI, the Evangelicals be;eive that just before the Biblically prophesied 7 years of tribulation and judgements begin, they will be "raptured" which means they will be taken from the earth during this 7 year period while the rest of us SUFFER. We Mormons will REALLY suffer as the followers of Satan. Yes, many do believe that.

The actual Biblical message is that this "rapture" will occur as Jesus Christ descends to the earth to establish a 1000 years of peace. Those who have repented and been righteous will meet Jesus in the clouds as he descends. It will be a very sad day for many of these self righteous/bigots to find that their false teachings will cause them to be among those who suffer during the 7 year period.

For those who don't beleive in Jesus Christ because of just the evidence of the Bible, I would indicate that the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenents of the Church of Jesus Christ of LDS strongly testifies of Christ's divinity and His soon return to earth to establish His 1000 year reign of peace.

Merry Christmas to all.

fundamentalists...

Interesting note: this videogame is digital evidence of how the so called "fundamentalist" Christians know about anything but the foundations of Christian philosophy. It is very sad, indeed. However. I do not understand how vandalism against Nativity scenes in real life is better than killing characters in virtual space (both are instances of violence against the representations of people and their believes). Many good people celebrate Christmas, and they deserve, at least, respect to their traditions.

Jerry Jenkins' answer

For what it's worth, here is Jerry Jenkins' response.

Left Behind Video Game Controversy
Jerry Jenkins

You may have seen or heard some of the public flap over the Left Behind: Eternal Forces video game. Some have said it is gratuitously violent and has Christian characters targeting gays, Muslims, Jews, devout adherents of other faiths, and even Christians who disagree with Dr. LaHaye and me over various theological issues.

This is ridiculous to the point of lunacy and clearly comes from people who have not seen the game and have an obvious agenda. If you have wondered why Dr. LaHaye and I would have anything to do with a game that would target the very individuals we are commanded to love and persuade, you are not alone. We are as puzzled as you.

From the beginning, we have been jealous about the subsidiary rights to Left Behind. We have turned down all sorts of offers to capitalize on the name with pins, pens, mugs, candles, jewelry, and even board games. Our sole purpose in the writing was to declare a message in the hope that fewer people would be left behind, so unless a product can expand that message—as have the kids books, graphic novels (comics), and movies—we have stood firm.

When first we heard of a video game, we were as skeptical as anyone and insisted on hearing the idea directly from the planners. We were pleased to find that they were thorough professionals, shared our faith, and were as committed as we were to have the message be clear. We also wanted to avoid gratuitous violence.

The result is a game that is beautifully rendered, clearly carries our message (indeed, we have already heard of one young man who has become a believer through playing it), is strategic rather than only warfare based, and is no more violent than the Lone Ranger or Roy Rogers episodes I grew up watching. Unlike typical video games that show buckets of blood and flying body parts, victims shot in our game fall in a puff of smoke.

Yes, there is killing in self-defense, but more points are scored by building the Tribulation Force and its infrastructure. There is zero targeting of specific people groups. The enemy are the forces of the antichrist who have already taken the mark of the beast and committed themselves to his service.

I hope this gives you enough information to evaluate what you hear or read, and we trust you will check it out for yourself if you have further questions. The game has been approved by Focus on the Family, which is careful about such matters.

Thanks.
Jerry J.

Including me, but if you would like to get a more literal picture of what the Bible says on end times, read what the inventor of the floating magnetic head for the PC's first 5 1/4 inch floppy disk has to say about it at Apocalypse Prophesied. The site also teaches the non-violence of human to human, human to planet, etc. because people should help each other and not judge each other. God will judge when and how He chooses. The Bible gives strong information on that. Human attempts to understand it will always be flawed, so err to the side of kindness and grace.

PS
Jesus kept Hanukkah and did not ask anyone to observe Christmas. Neither did the early church. See my blog on it: Apocalypse Blog.

Before I read Matt's article, I was reading Thom Hartmann's book review of "The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States of America" with a Preface by Cass R. Sunstein (Buzzflash). It is so scary that our country has gone this wayward. To read about The Religious Freedom Act, and then be reminded of the disgusting saga of the "Left Behind" ideology and be reminded of the greedy make money off of religion sect, is sickening.
All I can say is "leave me behind- PLEASE".
Oh.....and to the vandals of nativity scenes, please start sticking pins in those blow-up ones.

Not A Christian Game, nor designed by true Christians either
Posted by: xbj on Dec 22, 2006 5:28 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The hype about this odious game being "Christian" overlooks the basic teaching of Jesus Christ: "Love your enemies."

This is the end result of the Luciferian co-opting of Christianity which started with the "Christian" "Right" (which is NEITHER) chasing and achieving political power in the NAME only of Christ, which goes against everything Jesus Christ taught, lived, and died (as an example) for, and ending, thankfully, with the Bush apostate "Presidency".

Games like this, and Presidencies like Bush's, perfectly illustrate the huge chasm between true Christianity, as lived and taught by Jesus, and Christianism, a political power anti-Christian movement that is Luciferian at its base, that merely uses the labels of Christianity as a cover for their intolerance and other heinous evils and war crimes against humanity.

Christianism has no more to do with true Christianity than Zionism has to do with true Judaism. Indeed, most Christianists ARE Zionists. And the top elite of both movements are CERTIFIABLY Luciferian.

I'm just going to come right out and ask the question everyone has been dying to ask: is this available for my spiffy new $600 PS3? Thankfully, I was able to round up my own "tribulation force" (mostly unemployed, twenty-something virgins) and blow away the antichrist's evil army. Come on . . . you know, the guys who camped out in front of the Wal-Mart and got the PS3 before us?

Anyway, we sure exacted some righteous retribution from those morons using our own Christ-sanctioned weapons - the .38 Special, he, he. Now we're ready to game it up. So when will it be available?

Oh, just one more question. When will it be available for the Wii? Me and the rest of the tribulation gang want the next closest thing to actually punching those homos and Muslims in the face!! Go Team Tribulation!!

At least this is a game, however perverse, whereas other religions are doing the killing and/or rape/pillage in reality around the world. Whethers its the moslems in just about every moslem nation killing Christians/Jews/Others (in middle east, asia, and africa) or killing other moslems in sectarian killings (or their own daughters in 'honour' killings for family pride.) Then we have the Jews killing Moslems (and some Christians) in Lebanon, West Bank, Isreal. At least the crazed Christians are only playing games whilst the rest of the crazies do it in reality.

How much more evidence is necessary to understand that Christianity is little more than a blatant deception based on stolen and recast Hebrew texts and traditions? It's amazing that so many people can be so readily duped by an obvious Roman strong lie.

I dont object to coverage of this "game" and analysis of its creators' mindsets-- but why not find someone more neutral on Christianity to write it? There is a huge amount of ink here venting vitriol on, not this bizarre offshoot of the religion, but the celebration of Jesus' birth.

Just as Bill O'Reilly does not represent all journalists, deranged rapture folk do not, in my book, represent Christians.

Pathological hate?

"Normally, I hate Christmas.

There is still a Long Way To Go, even for me."

If this is true, maybe you should seek psychological help.

It's things like these "left behind" books, and this horrifically blasphemous game, that shows folks around the world just how unchristian "conservatives" are.

There's a real difference between a polemic and the actual message of peace and love from Jesus.

Obviously some people need to do some major chilling out. Geez man, people like you are as dangerous as the Taliban destroying Buddha statues in Afghanistan! These people have just as much right to believe their fantasy as you do yours. I agree that the series gives people a false sense of security and a belief that they are better than everyone else because they are the chosen, but that's no different than you believing that you are better than them because you are just as ignorant in believing that there is no spiritual realm that exist around you just because you can't see it. The problem with people like you is that you are just as bitter and hateful as they are! So chill out, enjoy Santa or Rudolf, Saint Nickolas, Yule, the winter solstice or whatever, maybe you don't believe in family, good company, good food, and a chance to enjoy the magic of a child's smile, now that's magic to me! And shame on AlterNet for wasting my computer inbox with tirades from Grinch's like you!

For all of the "Progressives" who frequent this site (even the non-angry ones): You really need to take into account what is happening in the world today when casting judgments on those who take religion seriously. You can cite the Christian conquests from 1000 years ago when defaming Christian leaders, but those leaders are not killing or advocating the killing of anyone today. You can curse the Jews of Israel for killing Muslims that have sworn to destroy them. You can cite hundreds of thousands dead in Iraq as "Christian" (US) caused, though Saddam killed more, and most of the dead are caused by other Muslims. The sad facts are that the Muslims are the only religion that are currently, today, in real time openly calling for the deaths of non-believers. They are the ones who are the aggressors in every major trouble point in the world. Those are the facts.

So, you can disparage Christians all you'd like. In fact you do ad nausea, and you get away with it because it's PC to do so. The fact is that the Muslim religion and it's followers' adherence to Sharia is currently the biggest cause for despair in the world. The support and comfort that Progressives give to those Extreme Islamists only exacerbates the situation. You're fooling yourselves if you think for one second that the first set of people who would be killed if Bin Laden gets his wish for a Muslim run world would not be the "progressive" atheists. Facts are facts. Bad things happened with other religions centuries ago… Islam is fanatical NOW!

Here's another version of this kind of thing from the Mideast, more politcal and less religious:

"Syria launches Arabs' first video game, on Intifada"
Saturday, 23 Feb, 2002 - Syria

DAMASCUS (AFP) - To turn Arab children away from American video games featuring US soldiers killing Iraqis and Afghans, a Syrian publishing house has designed a video game on the Palestinian uprising, or intifada.

The new game is called Underash, and its hero is a young Palestinian stone- thrower, Ahmed, fighting Israeli soldiers and settlers.

"We seek to counterbalance the poisonous ideas conveyed by American video games to our children," said Hassan Salem, executive director of the project at the Dar al-Fikr publishing house....

...The game consists of six phases, starting with Ahmed trying to reach Jerusalem''s Al-Aqsa mosque, Islam''s third holiest site, dodging Jewish settlers'' bullets and throwing stones at Israeli soldiers.

Once he reaches the mosque compound, Ahmed has to evacuate injured Palestinians, grab the rifle of an Israeli soldier and expel the soldiers from the site.

In other phases, Ahmed tries to infiltrate a Jewish settlement and raise the Palestinan flag, and to sneak into an Israeli army weapons storage facility. He is caught and he tries to escape.

The final task is in southern Lebanon. Ahmed takes part in a Lebanese guerrilla attack against an Israeli radar position, during which the soldiers are killed and the facility destroyed.

The game designers stressed that Ahmed "is only attacking the occupation forces, soldiers and settlers, never the civilians."

"We aspire to peace, we are simply telling the story of a people uprooted from his homeland, whose children are killed," said the owner of Dar al-Fikr, Mohammad Salem."

That's interesting, isn't it? Now how about a video game based on the movie "Syriana" - that'd be very educational. You could cut oil deals, carry out politically motivated terrorist attacks, assassinate recalcitrant Arab sheiks, break into oil company offices to steal secrets, take over oilfields and refineries with your elite military team, all while being pursued by the Israelis, the Saudis, the Americans, the Russians, the Iranians and the Chinese - sort of a "Grand Theft Oil" with scenes in Moscow, London, Washington, Beirut, Baghdad, Tel Aviv, Riyadh and Tehran. I think it'd be half shoot-em-up action interspersed with economic intrigue - this would sell, I think!

By our behavior, we have proven that we are no more sophisticated than those apes.

This video game (like all video games, played by perpetual adolescents), is just the latest sad example of how little we comprehend – and how, in our greed and stupidity, we'll turn anything into trash if it will turn a buck or two.

A Relatively New Concept

It should be noted that the concept of the rapture is relatively new and is not common to all forms of Christianity. The term rapture first became popular in the United States toward the end of the 19th century through the teachings of an Irish evangelist named John Nelson Darby. Many Christian groups do not accept a “rapture theory” and challenge such a Biblical interpretation as inconsistent and misconstrued. The Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, and many other mainline Protestant faiths reject the concept as a confused understanding of the second coming of Christ.

Every so often the mainstream media focuses on a video game that promotes ultra-violence. For instance, the Grand Theft Auto series, which glorifies violence, mayhem, and nihilism. One can rape and murder a prostitute, for instance, in at least one of the GTA games. That seems like the kind of thing that would send Alternet editors into a tizzy. But did Alternet run a story on the dangers of Grand Theft Auto? My guess is no (correct me if otherwise)...because Grand Theft Auto is inspired by the lifestyle of certain demographics that Alternet views ultimately as victims: "urban poor" socialized into a culture of crime and violence

Christians who believe in the Rapture (which has only the vaguest, if any, scriptural support BTW) are bad guys who threaten us in the Alternet universe. Hence, a video game marketed to them, that will almost certainly sell only a small fraction of the copies that GTA 3 sold, is worthy of an article informing us of the present danger. Is the game any more disturbing than the phenom of the books themselves, read and loved by apparently millions of adults worldwide?

I suggest that any one of us, at the individual level, is far more likely to suffer violence or any other direct setback from "urban poor" socialized into a life of crime and violence than from Christians waiting for the Rapture. Please note that I'm not blaming the video in game either case. Please note also that my statement in no way excuses the lunacy of Rapturism, which is symptomatic of distressing trends in American culture, and certainly contributes to our current deranged foreign policy. It clearly can have negative effects on the rest of us, but they are because of a cynical government that exploits the believers. The odds of any one Christian believer attacking an "infidel" in the steets are miniscule.

Alternet does it again. Another Christian hating article (unless the entire introduction was a joke). I am not Christian, and I fully understand how much pain has been caused in the name of Christ. However, I also know that many Christians are good people, and that the nativity scene (though it doesn't strike a chord with me) has great meaning for many people. Anyone who desecrates something so important to people is a complete asshole. I don't care how much you hate Christmas because of what you think it represents, don't bring everyone else down because you're a whiny goth. Christmas is fun, the commercialism and over the top consumerism is even fun. If you don't have Christmas spirit, fine, but don't ruin it for others. To those of you who don't let your anti-establishment leftism get in the way of your Christmas spirit: MERRY CHRISTMAS!

PS fuck "happy holidays", no one in their right mind is offended by merry christmas! no more bullshit pussy politically correct "seasons greetings", "holiday tree" crap! Is a Minora a "holiday candle? Is Ramadan a "holiday fast"? NO!!!

PPS I am actually a leftist, I just get tired of political correctness and anti establismentism, so don't pull the "he's just a guy paid by the republicans to post" crap

CROCK OF (fill in the blank).

I am a Christian. I think this game is a travisty. I also know that the book series is based on false teaching. Jesus is not, according to the Bible, going to return two more times that equate one Second Advent. This whole thing is meadow muffins!!!

It is hard to respond to this scenario. It is also hard to beleive that anyone who takes the Bible at face value could 1. teach the false doctrine of the two stage second coming 2. make a game where Christians go around killing people. Only in self defense or in the defense of one's country is killing allowable. Even then some of the military activities are questionable. Vietnam any body? I have yet to read in the Book of the Revelation where the game thesis is portrayed.

CIPOs like GWB are already giving Christianity a bad name. Now this. (Christian In Profession Only) God help us!

I hope people realize that most Christ loving people also find this tottaly unaceptable. The left behind writers & the game makers do not speak for all of us. But they get so much attention that the true voice of the Christian is lost.

In my own words, here is a short list of what I think the author was trying to say and my own thoughts:
-He hates Christmas (ok, fine, to each his own)
-Seeing others that hate Christmas even more than him not only makes him feel better about himself, but also gives him a good laugh at the lengths some people will go to out of their own hatred of the Holiday. (Yeah, I admit it. After working retail through two holiday seasons, I am begining to loathe Christmas as well, but I'm not going to go out and vandalize things because of it. I mean, that's devotion to your hatred!)
-He saw the release of the game during Christmas time to be quite ironic in a way.
-This "Christian" game/recruitment device goes so far against everything in the bible. (I'm not sure whether to check the game out to get a good laugh or be sick)
-'Popular Christianity' is becoming a bit scary.
-The people that made the game were actually asking people to pray for them and mostly FOR THE GAME. (Not only is that down right sad, it's also insulting)
-He basically raises an important question by the end of this article. What has modern/popular Christianity truly come to with not only the books and games like this, but also what Christmas has turned into?

Just my thoughts on this after reading a long list of replies. I both love and hate Christmas anymore, along with Christianity. Just like Christmas, true Christianity has a great message behind it. But our society has really began to screw it up. Please note, there are always exceptions. I'm only generalizing. In any case, I agree with an earlier poster. I'll stick to my World of Warcraft thank you very much. The worst you have to worry about there are loud and obnoxious idiots bragging and learning some Norse mythology.

AP:

Now, a new congressional report says federal authorities failed to investigate evidence suggesting Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols had assistance plotting the bombing - and some of the information pointing to co-conspirators came out of Trentadue's lawsuits against the FBI.
And it adds fuel to the mystery of Kenneth Trentadue's supposed suicide in 1995 at the Federal Transfer Center in Oklahoma City...

Kenneth Trentadue, who had served time for bank robbery, was arrested near San Diego in June 1995, two months after the bombing that killed 168 people. He was sent to the transfer center in Oklahoma City for an alleged parole violation. On Aug. 21, guards found Trentadue's blood-soaked body in his cell hanging from a noose made of torn bedsheets. Prison officials say the 44-year-old inmate committed suicide.
According to Jesse Trentadue, his brother bore a strong resemblance to Richard Lee Guthrie, a bank robber and alleged accomplice of McVeigh. He maintains that authorities mistakenly thought his brother was Guthrie - a member of the Midwest Bank Robbery Gang, an arm of the Aryan Republican Army that stole from financial institutions to fund attacks on government buildings - and killed him during an interrogation that got out of hand.
Guthrie was arrested on bank robbery charges in 1996 and eventually struck a plea bargain with prosecutors. In fall 1996, he claimed he would soon be revealing information that "would blow the lid off the Oklahoma City bombing case," according to the report. The next day, he was found dead, hanging in his cell in Kentucky, purportedly a suicide.
"This suspicious 'suicide' mirrored the similar death of [Kenneth] Trentadue, another prisoner, who may have been tangentially and incorrectly linked to the Oklahoma City bombing," the subcommittee report says.
Trentadue has filed three lawsuits in U.S. District Court in Salt Lake City alleging, among other claims, that the FBI has violated the Freedom of Information Act by failing to turn over requested documents on the Oklahoma City bombing.

There are some dangerous trends in Fundamentalist and Evangelical Christianity as it is popularly taught and preached today through series like Left Behind and similar television shows. And I am a believing Christian who falls more towards the Evangelical end of the spectrum! What worries me is the "theory" of the premillenial rapture. This is a long and convoluted tale, but the main point is that true Christians will be raptured off of planet Earth before a really nasty period of time called the Tribulation when a third of the Earth's land mass and seas will be destroyed in nuclear explosion, and the rest of the planet suffer plague and pestilence and earthquakes to the point of near-destruction. Those Left Behind will have to struggle to survive these seven years.

The main problem with this theory is that it is hopeless. There is no point in saving the planet, it's going to be destroyed anyway. There is no point in social justice, things are only going to get worse anyway until we blessed few are Raptured away to (presumably) watch the carnage from on high. And the really scary part: there is no point to peace in the Middle East because the Bible says the Temple must be rebuilt and then violated in some mysterious fashion before the end can come. Therefore we must encourage the destruction of the Muslim Temple Mount (Al Aqsa Mosque in Arabic) so that Christ can return!

That is the agenda. I reject it entirely, simply because it does not square with Christ's teachings of peace and not returning injustice with injustice. Christ forced no one to believe. He did say there would be division and trouble in this life, so I don't expect a utopia until he does return. But we are to be the light of the Earth, not contribute to the darkness.

As for the prophecies, one needn't follow the Left Behind interpretation to be a believer. I believe that most of Christ's predictions (like the destruction of the Temple) were fulfilled when the Romans attacked and defeated Jerusalem around 70 A.D. And I believe this was a direct result of the Israelites once again rejecting the words of a Prophet sent by God (the Old Testament is full of this.) "He who lives by the sword shall die by the sword."

Prophecies have a way of being completely fulfilled, to the letter, in a way no one expected. Christ himself was an example. He was not the great warrior-king who would physically vanquish Israel's enemies and set up city-state on Earth to rule the world. He was a mere carpenter and itenerant preacher and died like a lamb to slaughter. His Kingdom is, strangely enough, right here with us and without borders, set up in the hearts and minds of any man, woman, or child who will listen to his call, and believe.

"Why do you call me `Lord, Lord,' and not do what I tell you? Every one who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep, and laid the foundation upon rock; and when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house, and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But he who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation; against which the stream broke, and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great." Luke 6:46
