PEEK contributor Bob Geiger sat down for a one on one with incoming Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Friday.

They talked impeachment: "I haven't been interested in impeachment for some time because of two words: Dick Cheney."

They talked retribution: "I think first of all you have to apply a very simple principle: It's called the Golden Rule. I will not treat them like they treated me. We're going to have Congress the way it ran for more than 200 years."

They talked goals: To show you how strongly we feel about this, we told the Republicans that there will be no Congressional pay raise unless you raise the minimum wage. There's no minimum wage increase, there's no Congressional pay raise for the first time in many years... I guess I put it in this vernacular: I dare the Republicans to stop us from doing it.

Poor excuse

Reid is right in one respect. Cheney has to go as well. Pelosi can't be seen as leading a double barrelled impeachment charge when she would benefit as next in line of succession.

Reid is, however, disingenuous. All you have to do is impeach (the more vulnerable) Cheney first. The preznit would be forced to appoint a squeaky clean replacement VP who could then take over and serve-out whatever term is left after Bush the Lesser himself is impeached later in the second round.

The country would have to be very impressed with how professionally the Dems handle the tons of evidence supporting those indictments.

There would be blowback from a Bush-bashing fiesta similar to the Clinton lynching. Rove-bots of the religious right would once again re-enter the fray and the decaying Republican consensus would be revived.

This scenario assumes a decision to tie-up Congress for the next two years on succession issues. An alternative would be for all Dem-led committees to investigate and expose (bipartisan) wrongdoing and errors in their respective areas of expertise and develop by implication a 'reality-based' platform for 2008. Of course, the only candidate who would dare run on such a platform would have been Paul Wellstone.

Crime, Impeachment, and the Golden Rule

Here is the bottom line. If ever there was an impeachable offense, Bush and his cronies, both elected, and unelected, have committed it. The crimes of Bush and Cheney are too many to list here. If they are not both impeached, then the US Constitution does not mean what it was intended to mean, and the people have no protection from a criminal predatorial regime.

The Golden Rule has nothing to do with it. We are supposed to have the rule of law in this nation, not a theocracy or a government in which religious beliefs are a legitimate excuse for exempting any elected official from her legal obligations to the nation.

The reference to the "Golden Rule" may sound politically correct, but the American people are looking politics as usual, we want real correctness to the way our government has been handling our affairs, foreign and otherwise. The rules Congress must uphold are called laws. As elected officials and the voice of the voters, apply this "Golden Rule": If you break it, you own the consequences! What I hope he isn't implying is that he won't Impeach because if he breaks the law, he WANTS his peers to look the other way! That would be "Do unto others as they do unto you" in the framework of cronyism, which we are all too familiar.

Justice for All

Impeachment is not about revenge. It is about the law. No man is above the law and we must go after these criminals with the same vigor as we would any other criminals, that is the law . These guys are off the charts when it comes to lying and stealing. They have robbed and stole for themselves and their friends for over 30 years and it is time they paid the price. Their lies have sent untold numbers of men and women to their deaths to fulfill their agenda of greed. They wanted control of the oil and the economies of the world, by any means necessary. We can not let them get away with this.If we do not send them a message loud and clear they will bide their time and send their minions to do it again and again until they totally subvert the Constitution. This is the military industrial complex Esinhower warned us about.
They are master manipulators, no better than any 3rd world dictators. Impeach Cheney first. then Bush and finish them off.Neutralize the Neocons. No matter what laws are passed they can be nullified when they regain power. We must kick them where it hurts.Fine them for their high crimes and misdemeanors as we would any common criminal.Take all the wealth they hold so dear, just like other thieves. They are just more bold than the man who puts a gun in your back and takes your wallet and then pistol whips your child and wife. They want everything and will not settle for less. They will be back. This is not about revenge this is about justice for all.
