War Crimes: How Israeli Soldiers Kill and Civilians Grow Numb

By Orit Weksler, AlterNet. Posted December 12, 2006.

One Israeli officer says the world doesn't seem to notice killing in small numbers. And those closest to the violence become too scared to empathize for those who die.

J and I met in middle school. He was a thin guy passionate about music; I was a raging teen who smoked way too much pot. We both went through our parents' divorces at the same time. We celebrated our birthdays in the same week. We were good friends- best friends at times. We graduated from high school and served in the army. I married, had a family and moved to the United States. He stayed, not only in Israel but also in the military, eventually becoming a high-ranking intelligence officer. We managed to keep our friendship for twenty years now.

When I visited Israel this summer we spent some time together, cruising the streets of Tel Aviv where the best lattes in the world are served in sunny, stylish sidewalk cafés. We talked about love, family and yoga. J, who had just returned from a month long retreat in India, shared his experiences and photos. We discussed old friends, music and art. There's nothing like hanging out with a childhood friend.

Then the war started. The way I saw it Israel was showering Lebanon with bombs, spraying it with artillery. My friend J said Hezbollah had too much ammunition. We had to destroy it sooner or later, this is as good a time as any, he said. Fine, I argued, I could see the need to destroy weapons that are aimed at civilian targets inside Israel, but why bomb Beirut? Why bomb civilians? Everyone does that, said J, the trick is to kill them three by three, not in big numbers. That way the world doesn't even notice.

Israel's summer adventures in Lebanon left the region with more grief, vengeance and hate. I flew back to California, inspired by my friend J to take up yoga.

Israel is still killing its neighbors three by three and as my friend pointed out, the world doesn't seem to notice. When 17 civilians, mostly women and children were killed in their sleep in the northern part of Gaza strip, there was some discussion about it in the UN. But Israel is killing civilians every day claiming it to be a war against those who are launching rockets at the southern Israeli towns of Shderot and Ashkelon.

In the winter of our senior year of high schools J and I would climb on the roof of his Jerusalem apartment building. Those were the days of the Gulf War and schools were closed. We would climb up there when the sirens sounded and cheer the scud missiles on their way to Tel Aviv. Our friends from the coast were terrified; a fact we found to be amusing. Only weeks before, they refused to visit us claiming that Jerusalem was too dangerous because of the riots and stabbings. And yes, it was dangerous, and we were afraid to walk to school. But now we knew that the Iraqis wouldn't aim at Jerusalem. Enjoying the unexpected school break, the fear of our friends in Tel Aviv felt surreal. The fact that it was they who were now in greater danger was a comic relief.

It's so easy to lose your capacity for empathy when you are scared.

A preschool teacher was killed in Gaza this past November while riding a bus with her students on their way to school. Well, there might have been someone driving on that same road that was planning to launch a missile, an Israeli would say to herself. She won't be thinking what it would be like for her own daughter to see her preschool teacher falling to the floor of the bus in a pool of blood.

Of course she can't be thinking of that, this Israeli mother who could have been me. That kind of thought is too terrifying. For an Israeli mother this situation is so real that when it happens to others it might actually be relieving. For her and other Israelis, who have been subject to attacks on civilians for as long as they can remember, it might not be possible to see the suffering of others. They're too scared.

But their government, generals and intelligence officers have no right to be scared. They are abusing their people's fear, their inability to empathize. They're killing and wounding Palestinian civilians one by one, two by two, three by three every day in the name of this fear.

Israeli society is worn, torn and terrified. It's led by an irresponsible government that is making them all into criminals of war. Because what Israel is doing in Gaza these past months is a war crime by any standard.

My friend J is very dear to me. I know he thinks his service in the Israeli Intelligence saved lives. Perhaps it did. Still I think nothing can justify civilian killings- neither mass killings nor killings that are done one by one. For those families it really doesn't matter if their children were all killed on the same day or during a course of a whole month.

Those of us who are lucky not to be living in fear, those of us who know this kind of life is possible, are obligated to stand up against war crimes that are committed in the name of fear and in abuse of peoples inability to see their neighbors' pain.

Zionism Will Destroy Itself

The vicitms of Zionism know that the numbers "add up". Every Palestinian that is murdered or displaced generates many irridentist opponents of zionism. Zionism is a cancer. It will eventually consume itself, as the cheap Arab labor that Zionism depends on for survival will become the poison that finally eradicates this disease.

The governments of USA and Israel are a matched set of criminals who create war crimes. While the USA has killed far more people than Israel it is only because the USA government is so much larger than Israel's. There are lots of people in both countries who oppose these wars and these war crimes and we are all proud of that if we are not whacked out from government brainwashing. Israeli occupiers are hated by Palestinians and US occupiers are hated by Iraqis. All occupiers are hated. So why occupy? It's all a game over territory and resources. Don't support the criminals who play these immoral games. Remove the occupiers and make peace not war.

US Congressional Enablers Of Israeli War Crimes Don't Grow Numb
Posted by: Douglas on Dec 12, 2006 5:36 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
They applaud Israel's slaughter of even the most innocent of victims and actually pass resolutions "absolving" the Israelis of any guilt for their crimes. So-called "progressives" such as Bernard Sanders, Barbara Boxer, Henry Waxman, Barnie Frank, Edward Kennedy, Nancy Pelosi, Tom Lantos, and virtually all the rest of the Democrats (and Republicans) in the congress outdo one another excusing and defending (and, of course, funding) Israel's ongoing ethnicide of the Palestinians. The Israeli public may grow "numb" at the killing, but the US Congress positively glorifies it. Anyone who speaks out against such perfidy is called an "anti-semite" or worse.

There are no new revelations in this article. Israel has been doing this since its inception. The Zionist political elite, fresh from the horrific experiences of the Holocaust, learned all to well what world opinion would respond to. Look at the public record for UN violations, literally scores upon scores, and no appreciable reaction from the Guardians of World Peace.

What Garbage

What an inane piece from a woman who left Israel and now maunders about how life is tough in Gaza. She should live in Sderot. Just imagine the American response if guerillas in Juarez launched rockets into El Paso. Israel left Gaza in the mistaken hope that the Palestinians would respond in a peaceful way. Instead they elected Hamas, who want to drive every Jew into the sea and dance in the ruins of Tel Aviv, and place their rocket launchers close to the border. The Palestinians could end this war in a minute if they 1) agreed to live in peace and stopped lobbing rockets into towns where, yes, innocent Israeli women and children live and 2) agreed that Israel had a right to exist. The author should maunder about Darfur, where Arab Muslims have killed 400,00 black Africans.

Hi~
Let me begin by saying that Israel is an apartheid state that is practicing genocide on Palestinians. What is the cute word they use for genocide? Is it removal or displacement? It's some innocuous word that escapes me sans my morning coffee.

People like this author are speakig truth to the power of their grand mothers and other relatives. It takes a special courage to do that. I don't see Muslims doing the same thing. I don't see them demanding that assaults on civilians be halted as an immoral act.

God Speed,
David

The conclusion is that dead Israelis .. not a problem. Dead Palestinians .. let's wring our hands for the poor victims.

The left should be ashamed of their totally unbalanced view of events in that area.

If you can cotrol the media, you can control public opinion.
Strange, isn't it? the EVIL INSANE Muslims supposedly kill a few for no other reason than their un-called for hatred of the west.
Israel and their trained attack dog, (the U.S. "christians" ), slaughter 100's of thousands of men women and little ones and are lauded as "heroic victims" of extremists.
Well, you mindless drones, was the USS Liberty attacked and have it's life boats straffed by Muslims? Were Muslims caught spying on the U.S. countless times?
Do Muslims dictate to and control your "leaders" in government?
maybe it's time you grew the 2 "B"'s and demmand your country re-evaluate it's mindless support of a terrorist nation.
A nation of sheep, led by a cartel of whores, controlled by big business. Welcome,...to the REAL Evil Empire.

Articles like these are very, very important.

I had a peculiar email exchange with the Israeli military historian Martin van Grevald a couple of years ago. Initially I was defending him against what felt like strange internet distortions of what he said and wrote.

But in the end, I found myself puzzled by the statement: "Thank you Israel can help herself." I had suggested to consider ways Europe could help. His response made me angry against my initial intentions, And I think, I answered that suddenly I understood what feelings might be behind the net hoax. A statement that brought our exchange to an immediate halt.

Admittedly I couldn't help but think: Of cause Israel does not need to bother about anybody's help or sympathy with the biggest military in the world on its side.

But will it ever be enough to censure every kind of critical statement in the long run? There is much attention on media distortions but much less on resolving the conflict.

Was this response caused by genetic German antisemitism?
I do feel though, that Germans have a responsiblity. My problem is: Aren't they responsible for the plight of the Palestinans too?

GDP-per capita at Gaza Strip

The per capita GDP in Gaza is $600. In Israel, it is $25,000. To put that in perspective, assume that the average person living in Brooklyn earns minimum wage while the rest of New York earns $214 per hour. This inequality should open the eyes of those who blindly support everything that Israel and the US do. These GDP numbers are listed at the CIA World Fact site.

Bravo! The sad reality is that our elected representatives are commodities, property of the highest bidders, while the needs and interests of consituents are virtually ignored. Where are the voices of those we put in office condemning the atrocities perpetrated on a daily basis against Palestinian civilians? Who makes a case for the expropriated, those whose homes have been appropriated or demolished, deprivation of due process, water rights, targeted assassinations, torture, etc.? Who makes a case for an entire people ghettoized to satisfy the expansionist mode of the occupier? We can't profess to have an interest in peace in the Middle East as long as a
no-fault clause exonerates Israel or the US from any and all wrongdoing.

Anti-semetic Hate Fest

While I can appreciate that there are two sides to every story and that Israel isn't entirely innocent and Palestine isn't entirely guilty, and certainly that every Israeli or Palestinian is neither the cause nor the victim of the issue, the rants and tirades of vitriole are so one sided on this forum as to render it utterly useless except as a place to vent anti-semetic (and from some of the posts, Anti-US) hatred. The willingness with which some of these posters have bought into the anti-zionist hate mongering wholesale is beyond the pale. Your willingness to hate has entirely hidden the real cause of conflict in the Middle East. It's a clash of cultures - there's no good guy, no bad guy, just two cultures that can't co-exist except with a huge fence between them. Everything else is immaterial.

Muslims are also being killed in Darfur
Posted by: sarahk on Dec 12, 2006 11:59 AM

The situation in Darfur does not split down neat religious lines as Israel & Palestin conflict seems to. The fight began along power and territory conflicts. The central government in Khartoom wanted to put down a rebellion in the southern region so they armed herders and allowed them to begin killing among the farmers and settled people. There are now multiple armed groups, some Christian, some Animist and some Muslim, that are killing indescriminately across the region. While there is a religous component, the greater factor seems to be a long time animosity between the north and south regions of the country.

We react to what we know. If we don't get to know about it, it doesn't exist. If you can keep your killings and abuse away from the headlines, noone will know of it, and it doesn't exist.

Anybody saying a big, loud "yeah! we know of them!" when I ask you about the Karan people?

Some of you might. Not many, I guess. If more of you do something to find knowledge about them and their perils, that is great.

They are but one of many, many people, locations and conflicts that doesn't exist to us.

Knee-jerk Anti-Semitism

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Why is that every time there is any criticism of Israel, the charge of anti-semitism is slapped without any regard to substance of the criticsim??
If Jews write against Israeli policies they are branded self-hating Jews. The list of "self-hating" jews is rather large these days and includes Chomsky, Finklestein, Shahak, Uri Avnery, Gideon Levy, Illan Pape, Avi Shalaim....
Jimmy Carter has been branded as an anti-semite, as well as the Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, UNHCR, Nelson Mandela, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Walt & Mersheimer....
Zionist in the early years tried to get Gandhi to say some nice words of support for Israel, but Gandhi having first hand knowledge of European Colonialism (Zionism is European colonialism in religious disguise), refused repeatedly. I wonder if Gandhi has been branded as Anti-Semite?
The "self-hating" Jew Finklestein has noted in his book "Beyond Chutzpa", the charge of anti-semtism is losing its sting from frivolous over-use. That may be true in rest of the world, including Israel, but its simply not true in IS

I just can't shake this strange feeling that Douglas' hatred of Zionists is not somehow rooted in a wider hate for Israelis and Jews in general. Sometimes I think the lady doth protest too much.

I also don't think I've ever seen a word of condemnation written against Palestinian terrorists come to think of it. Tell me it isn't true Douglas. There is plenty of blame to go around and that Douglas fails to see this doesn't surprise me at all.

Demographics is the science of who people are and where they move to. A big factory opens up in a small city, workers move there. They leave behind the town where the mill has closed.

A fair estimate is that 5% of any population is composed of psychopaths. So for every million people about 50,000 of them are inhuman, unfeeling monsters. The psychopaths also see opportunities and they relocate to capitalize on them as well. But the science of studying the movements and concentrations of INhumans is in it's infancy. Often it has been viciously suppressed by governments and corporations.

In his book "Man's Search For Meaning" author Viktor Frankl states: "It was not the best of us that survived the death camps." Could it be that the holocaust filtered the jewish population? Leaving a higher than average concentration of psychopaths there? Am I an anti-semite for asking this question?

One important thing that gets overlooked when those who criticize Israel's behavior is that it is a state put together by and run by Zionists. It is a Zionist state, and it is a misnomer to call it a "Jewish state." When Christian evangelists or right wingers open up some wacky compound or a Waco, do we say that it is the "Christians" as a whole that are responsible for it? No, we say it is some "far right" Chritians or a cult. Now, Zionists themselves are basically a fringe Jewish sect and represent a cult. Many Jews neither support Israel or its behavior. As for saying Israel is "picked on" say on Alternet or in other forums this is also misleading. Why? Because there exists no balance between the two. Israel has a marked and continued access to the US arsenal and some of the USA's most advanced weaponery. Israel also has its own nukes. The Palestinians have the equivalent really of sling-shots to deal with this. The Zionists essentially are a product of what happens when you take a fringey sect, park them off in some other part of the world, and then arm them to the max and turn them loose on their neighboors. And, Mayhem ensues.

That's how I feel when I see that the majority of responders here have stopped drinking the Kool-Aid and are completely aware of the ongoing ethnic cleansing and slow-motion genocide in Palestine.

There are a few rabid batshit crazy Zionist posters, as usual, but one can sense their growing desperation. Most only reveal themselves as the arrogant racist shitheads they truly are, which is hardly helpful for their lost cause. And simply, it's just not working anymore. Few Americans see Israel as the victim, and most are tired of hearing about the Holocaust. As for American Jews being oppressed, we all know better: they aren't. Damn, even Apocalypto is number one at the box office.

Yet while all this is certainly a step in the right direction, it is meaningless, until those we have put in the government adopt the same view. That will take work, as both Republicans and Democrats cannot do enough to prove their undying devotion to that corrupt and criminal state. Devotion, I should say, that is usually at odds with our own interests.

Meanwhile, it will get worse, as more Zionists (read: neoconservatives) lobby for an attack on Iran and their media pushes lies and propaganda to enable the attack.

So while I am thrilled that people are waking up, simply being awake is not enough. The responses that have been entered here should be sent to our representatives. They need to hear that we do not blindly support Israel, nor do we want to expend any more blood and treasure defeating her enemies for her.

If enough of us put the pressure on, even useless pieces of shit like Pelosi and Clinton will eventually have to listen — and act. After all, all these pukes want is one more term. If whorish devotion to apartheid Israel is going to cost them that, they will have no choice.

Then we can begin to work on the media.

it is unfortunate, but in the USA, the Zionists have been extremely effective at propogandizing and controlling the media and American Jews. If you travel much to Europe or the Far East, it's a wake up call to even just listen to news about the Middle East. The stories are constant about Israel butchery in the Palestinian territories. But, as soon as you come back to America, those stories are to be found no more. Jews in America have been told that Israel is the only way to go. If this does not work, they are promised land or bennies if they go to Israel. And, last but not least, they are ridiculed for not supporting the "cause" with the inevitable and endless references to the Holocaust made. The Zionists feel they can afford to even write off the support of many of the world's Jews, as long as they control America's and the American political process.

First, I’m not calling some of the above posts anti-Semitic, but I’m suspicious of them because they sound so suspiciously close to what an anti-Semite sounds like. Israel does not purposefully target civilians, not matter how much you hear otherwise. Israel has even recently pulled out of the Gaza strip hoping for peace, only to have a dozen and a half rockets fired at it. The Palestinians don't want peace, they want to destroy Israel.

Also, some users conveniently forget the war crimes of Hezbollah during the recent Lebanon war. It’s well documented that Hezbollah transformed civilian infrastructure into military infrastructure, a defined war crime. Hezbollah uses the city of Beirut as a headquarters, with military offices in the same buildings as civilian apartments. It’s not Israel that puts innocent women and children in harm’s way, it’s Hezbollah when they fire Katyusha rockets from the front lawns of occupied homes (there’re even videos on Google for this one).

Hey, I guess it’s ok to openly call for the total and complete destruction of Israel (and every Jew in it) *coughIRANcough*. It’s ok, go to CNN or BBC, and you’ll see that Ahmadinejad is a genocidal lunatic, who has openly called for Israel to be “wiped off the map”, about to get nukes. Hopefully your bliss won't be too badly disturbed. But hey, curse those Israelis for wanting to do something about it while the Committee on Foreign Relations convince themselves that he’s just kidding about the whole thing. Israel was attacked on the first day of its existence by four other Arab nations. It only takes one loss for every Jew in Israel to be wiped off the map.
