Cheney's lesbian daughter is pregnant

Virginia's anti-gay laws may treat her like a single mother.

The good news is that Mary Cheney is pregnant. We at the PEEK extend our sincere congratulations to Ms. Cheney, her partner Heather Poe, and their families.

The bad news is that the expecting parents live in what Pam Spaulding calls "the official homo-hate state of Virginia." As you may recall, Virginians passed Proposition 1 in November, an odious ballot initiative that preempts legal rights for all unmarried couples, gay or straight. So, even though Cheney and Poe live together and plan to raise their child together, they have no legal status as a couple in Virginia.

Luckily, Virginia still allows GBLT people to adopt children. However, Virginia probably doesn't allow so-called "second parent" adoptions for gay parents. In other words, Heather can't adopt the child unless Mary gives up her parental rights.

If conservatives love the traditional, nuclear family so much, why do they want Mary Cheney to be a single mother?
