Michael Moore: Five Good Reasons to Vote Today

By Michael Moore, AlterNet. Posted November 7, 2006.

Don't waste your time on this candidate or that: Vote Republican if you're for the War in Iraq -- Vote Democrat if you're against it.

1. IT'S A NATIONAL REFERENDUM. Although candidates' names will be on the ballot today, this election is NOT about this candidate or that candidate. Make no mistake about it: This election is nothing less than a national referendum on George W. Bush and his war. Don't waste your time trying to learn about who the schlump is that's running for office. You know they're all pretty much the same, a few are better than others, but … please. They is who they is. THIS election is not about them. It's a simple up or down vote on staying the course. To vote in favor of the war, vote for the Republican. To vote against the war, vote for the Democrat. As crazy as it sounds, even if the Republican is against the war, or the Democrat is for it, it doesn't matter. All that will matter by midnight tonight is the math on the big tote board. Did America say YES to Bush or NO to Bush? The ONLY way they're going to add it up is by counting the number of votes under the big D and the big R. The only way to take a stand against Bush today is to vote for the Dems on the ballot.

2. IN ORDER TO CATCH THE REPUBLICANS STEALING YOUR VOTE, YOU FIRST HAVE TO VOTE. There are huge and valid concerns about the new electronic voting machines that must be addressed. It is far too easy to use new technology to rig the vote. But if your fear of that leads you to decide that you shouldn't bother voting, well, then, I guess they've succeeded in snuffing out your voice without having to rig the machine. Make them break the law if they want to win. Vote. We'll catch them if they do. I promise.

3. WITH THE DEMOCRATS IN POWER IN THE HOUSE AND/OR SENATE, WE CAN GO AFTER THEM! These spineless Democrats who enabled Bush to start this war and funded it ever since are due for a shellacking from all of us. For nearly six years, they've hidden behind the cop-out of, "Hey, we're the minority, we have no power." As of tomorrow, hopefully, they will have no mask to hide behind. And it will be up to us to go after them.

4. I'LL PUT YOU ON MY WEBSITE. That's right. You can appear on my home page and be seen by millions later today. All you need to do is bring a broom when you go to vote. The broom is our mascot today because we're going to sweep the crooks and the warmongers outta office. Take a picture of yourself holding a broom outside your polling place, email it to me, and I'll put as many of you as I can up on the home page of my website. People all around the world will see you! Government files with your name on them will be initiated! What better way to celebrate this historic day?! And the final reason to vote today …

5. 2,836 + 655,000. Each one of them, American and Iraqi, are no longer with us because of the decision by one man to start a war. Each one of them represented a precious, God-given life that no man had the right to take away. Each one of them had a mother and father, sisters, brothers, husbands, wives, friends and loved ones, little boys and little girls. It's mad, my friends, utterly mad, this senseless loss of human life. So, do it for them. Call up whoever you know and tell them to meet you at the polls. And tell them to bring a broom, real or imaginary, with a big D on it. It's the only true American thing to do. See ya at the victory party tonight!

Digg!

Whatever you might think of Mr. Moore, from where I'm sitting, north of your beleaguered republic, this guy is one of the best you've got, absolutely. He's almost single-handedly taken on and often thrashed the corporate/neocon/criminal Chushrovian fools running your current administration.

Listen to him, take notes, follow his lead. He seems genuinely fairminded, with both a conscience and a knack for getting at the truth. You need to take advantage of this and every other opportunity to teach your immature political hacks, of either stripe, that they are ultimately accountable to you, their bosses.

Good luck today.

It looks like a lot of people aren't even going to be able to vote:

"Add it all up — all those Democratic-leaning votes rejected, barred and spoiled — and the Republican Party begins Election Day with a 4.5 million-vote thumb on the vote-tally scale."

The best fantasy movie maker of our time... so, here we have a movie maker, who know little about making factual movies, and he is giving us advice on how to vote.. priceless -

" Mr. lets impeach the president" because Moore doesnt agree with his views.. and Moore should know whats good for the world..after all he's made millions off of dumb people who believe in his fantast movies.. doesnt that make him an authority on something.. maybe scamming but surely not politics or world affairs.?

and if we bring a broom he'll put us on his web site..driving traffic there.. maybe we'll buy a book from there... how special..

The world watches.............time for all true US patriots to make a show & stand up and let it be known who you support....who of you have showed themselves to be real concerned citizens.

Your vote may help bring back a microcosm of decency to your government (that also being an oxymoron).

Makes you wonder whether alternet, as wholey effective electonic digital newscasting website, has done what its seems set out to do - crush the soul of the GOP?

Has it delivered? Is there any sembelence about its substance? Will the will of the people conqour & oversome the the evil powers of the mega tyrrant GW Bush? or has it been a complete waste of electricity, attributing to the other generators of greenhouse gases. How many votes did diebold steal? Will the executive be impeached & who & which of these idiots will have indecent realtions with an intern?

so.....do you have the guts to vote punk...well do you?

...Americans too often prove they are either apathetic, or uneducated religious bigots who hate gays, women's rights, and foreigners. The latter group believe in the magical man in the sky and the bibble book of myths, and that Bush has a special mission to fulfill in Iraq, in the service of the angels. They'll be a-votin' fer Bush and GAWD aginst the gays and the a-rabs!

While I normally respect the opinions of Mr. Moore, I couldn't disagree more with some of his comments.

"1.The only way to take a stand against Bush today is to vote for the Dems on the ballot."
If anyone believe's that then they are a fool.

"2. Make them break the law if they want to win. Vote. We'll catch them if they do. I promise."
Yeah, just like US'A 2000 & 2004 and Mexico in 2006.

3. WITH THE DEMOCRATS IN POWER IN THE HOUSE AND/OR SENATE, WE CAN GO AFTER THEM!
And we'll be right back to where we started. Politicians are merely the buffer to protect the system itself from Revolution.
As of tomorrow, hopefully, they will have no mask to hide behind.
Actually, if the Dems win it will be the Oligarchy going back to hiding behind The Mask that IS the Democratic Party.

4. What better way to celebrate this historic day?!
How 'bout breaking Federal Law by smokin' a joint and planting some HEMP seeds in your frontyard!

5. 2,836 + 655,000. Each one of them, American and Iraqi, are no longer with us because of the decision by one man to start a war.
"ONE man?" That's the system protecting itself again.

When do we as Citizens, get to enforce and envoke our rights and DUTIES as described in the Declaration of Independance?

Do we have to wait for an "official" election?

Will it be as easy as showing up to your polling place with a broom and placing an e-vote?

Have you thought about it? If not you should.

The Framers did.

The Dem faction of the imperial elite oligarchs have already made it quite clear that they are 110 percent FOR the war on Iraq. They intend to "do it better"; that is their only complaint against BushCo: i.e., that they have recklessly and incompetently led the American Imperial Cause over the cliff.

This is because your ruling elite is UNITED, and is circling the wagons to defend itself against...well, EVERYONE, pretty much, including you. It is also united in the need to defend US imperial interests no matter what, doing Whatever It Takes.

They want more troops, more violence, more militarism, more Fallujahs. Even if they need to establish some sort of a return to a military draft or "national citizen service" to do so.

http://www.antiwar.com/frank/?articleid=9973

Thus, those of us outside your militarist imperial police state expect NO change of policy from this non-election; only a possible change of tactics in its aggressive behaviour.

So, vote for whichever of the two overseers you'd rather have whipping your back; or refuse to subject yourself to that sort of ritual humiliation, and give a protest vote, or whatever other form of protest you like.

But for goodness sake, don't be caught with a stupid look on your face when your new Congress interprets its anti-war mandate from you as cause to hand you a draft card.

Dems been carping ad nauseam about "Bush lied people died."

Alternet Headline today: Bush's Election-Eve Message: Lies and Nonsense

Unfortunately lies and spin abound in politics. Look at the capstone article in Alternet today. Michael Moore; the liar loved by the left. Sadly nobody complains or calls BS on him because his lies fit their agenda.

Have 655,000 Iraqis really died? No but that is ok because that lie fits our morally superior agenda.

Michael,

You are absolutely 100% correct when you say that the Republicans completely stole the 2004 election by electronically rigging the Diebold voting machines.

In fact, since the general public fails to understand this concept at large, I have created a very simple-to-understand video to let people know EXACTLY what happened on election night in 2004:

"How To Steal An Election"

Is the fix in? Exit polls to be kept secret by media consortium:
Posted by: thoughtcriminal on Nov 7, 2006 1:49 PM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
In the wake of fraudulent voting schemes, the only way to check and see if those voters who actually managed to cast a ballot had it counted is to compare exit poll data with reported results on a precinct-by-precinct basis.

The lack of independent grassroots exit polling on a massive scale by groups such as Moveon.org may turn out to be the greatest mistake made in this election by progressive campaigners.

Spending money on 'get out the vote' is a good idea, but what if the votes are counted in secret by private companies using proprietary electronics and software?

The Los Angeles Times is saying that in 2000 it was the exit poll that was bungled, not the election itself.

"Exit poll team to be quarantined; Early results to be confined to room:

By Matea Gold,
Los Angeles Times, Nov 7 2006
New York | Haunted by the bungled calls and leaked information that plagued the coverage of the past three nationwide elections, television networks are taking no chances Tuesday.

This time around, the members of the National Election Pool - a consortium of five broadcast and cable networks and The Associated Press that commissions exit polls of the major races - have decided to sequester two analysts from each news organization in a secret "quarantine room" in New York, where they alone will get access to the first waves of data from precincts around the country.

Stripped of their cell phones and Blackberries - and even monitored when they use the bathrooms - the representatives will be able to study the results of the surveys, but will not be allowed to communicate them to their newsrooms until 5 p.m. Eastern. They must sign legal affidavits guaranteeing they will not reveal any data before then."

This is a first, isn't it? Why even have news reports? Why not just play old movies on every channel, like they do in Third World countries when a coup is in progress? Who are the corporate media 'analysts'? Where are the independent auditors?

What does the media have to say? "Oh - we're just building consensus here. Everything is perfectly normal, don't worry..."

How dare Michael Moore call for people to vote! Why should we care about the president's policies, I mean, "Mission Accomplished" right? And he didn't lie or anything to the 'Merkin people or nuthin about Iraq or the war. And it's only towelheads dying in Iraq anyways. "If we don't kill 'em there, we'll have to kill 'em here."

Now, if Bush had stuck his thingy in a non-wifey like Clinton had, I could understand the impeachment talk...

And you liberals: vote only if you want to give aid and comfort to the terr'rists!

So it begins...jammed phones, broken machines, long lines, intimidation... Why does everyone think this year will be different? They already stole 2 presidential elections (wide scale fraud). You really think they cannot steal House/Senate/Governor elections (small scale fraud)? This is the same group that managed to legalize warrantless wiretaps, suspend habeas corpus, ban books like "America Deceived" from Amazon, detain demonstrators and start 2 illegal wars based on lies. The Republicans will probably lose a few seats today to make it look good but maintain a majority. Then they'll invade Iran on behalf of Israel.

One death was too many. All life is precious...even Saddams sorry self. The 665,000 number was pure politics. The sample size was not credible according to other "statistics experts." The "statistics experts" for the 665# are a John Hopkins group that released a similar report right before the 2004 elections.

The reading I have done on the subject suggests that the UN report is likely the most accurate and I believe (?) that they published a number that was 1/10 of the 665,000 and yes even that is a gross amount of needless death.

You know, I respect Michael Moore as a filmmaker and appreciate his willingness to lend a voice to what is otherwise ludicrousness in this country. However, his ability to contradict himself is staggering. Isn't this the same man that showed in his last film how both parties are in fact THE SAME PARTY, that neither represents the will of the people, that neither reads the laws drafted for them by lobbyists, and that the real problem is the system itself (which rewards corruption), not the fucking voting machines. How can he "keep hope alive" for the democratic party, a party which lest we forget, has done nothing to condemn this illegal/inethical/immoral/genocidal war since its inception (save for a few folks)! And well, one would think he'd have the balls to look a little harder at 9/11, but that's another issue...or is it???

I like this guy but he's rather trying my patience at this stage.

More on exit polls

It turns out that the companies who are the sole contractors for the exit polling are "Edison Media Research" and "Mitofsky International". They've been hired by the National Election Pool, consisting of ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, CNN and The Associated Press. All of their data will be sent to a cloistered team of analysts who apparently will sit on it until after the 'official tally' is released.

Note that exit polls in 2000, 2002 and 2004 all showed Democratic candidates winning, until 'final vote counts' came out differently. Does anyone think that the 10 sequestered analysts will releasing polling data from early in the day if it contradicts the 'final official tally'?

Why didn't anyone else commission independent exit polling? Who trusts corporate America to count their votes for them and conduct exit polling?

Also take a look at Was the 2004 Election Stolen?
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., June 6 2006 Salon
:

"Republicans prevented more than 350,000 voters in Ohio from casting ballots or having their votes counted -- enough to have put John Kerry in the White House."

Whatever happened to NAFTA, Mikey?

I remember NAFTA and a Crime Bill of 1995 putting a huge amount of cops on the street. Build more prisons?

I hear a sucking sound and it's coming from the Oval Office from both Democrats and Republicans.

We don't need Mexican politics in the US. Having one party pass the the reigns to the other so there will be pardons or whatever is just nonsense. Which Skull and Bones member will be the next president?

I am tired of this Coca-Cola diplomacy too but that is another story. Anyone who votes Republican or Democrat needs their head examined because it's no use to examine their heart.

Break up this two party Hegelian system for good and we will have an honest debate about issues all of us care about.

This may sound silly but as I'm not from the US please forgive me as it's an honest question. Considering how things have been going since Bush left Texas in his rear view mirror what would happen if Bush looks at the results of today's election and says No, because of national security, things will have to stay the way they were? Thanks!

These are the Days of Miracle and Wonder
It was February 2004 and we had just a few days before, arrived in country; specifically Kuwait. It was a miserable time, because of the desolation of the camps and the insane amount of equipment and troops coming and going. It was in fact, the largest transference of troops in recorded history at that time. We were loaded onto a bus, and shuttled from Kuwait city to a lovely armpit referred to as camp New York. Along the way we stopped to take a bathroom break, and have a smoke. As it turns out, we happened to stop along a stretch of highway that is known the world over as the Highway of Death. The reason it is referred to as the Highway of Death stems from the scenery that surrounds it; miles and miles of burnt out trucks, tanks, and personnel carriers stretching for as far as the eye can see across the desert plain. Leftovers from the first Gulf War in 1991, when American A-10 Warthogs rained death and destruction upon the retreating Iraqi forces en masse. Afterwards the remains; flesh and bones, metal and glass, (both man and machinery together at last) were bulldozed off to the side like so much rubbish. Left to rust and rot in the unforgiving Mesopotamian sun. As I stood on the side of the road pondering the human condition, a Master Sgt. walked up beside me then stood in silence for a moment before sharing his groundbreaking thoughts with me. He took in a deep sighing breath, let it out and said “Maaaaannnn; isn’t that awesome.” His comment took a moment to register, but now is etched in the stone of my mind forever. I was disgusted at the satisfaction he took in the death and carnage that lay on the killing fields before us. I have seen the Coliseum, The Roman Forum, and The Sistine Chapel. I’ve seen Babylon, and the Grand Canyon, babies being born, and people brought back to life from death via CPR. All of these things are describe ably awesome, but not that highway. To me it was a tribute to all that is wrong with man; self-righteousness and self-destructiveness. I can truly say that I felt a sadness that I think I shall carry with me for the rest of my days in this world. These are the days of miracle and wonder.
I have often wondered the motives behind the horrible things that we do to each other as human beings. I look back on all the things I witnessed during my fifteen months in Iraq, and try to make some sense out of the senselessness. Violence and hatred, suffering and greed, here today forgot tomorrow. I am afraid the path to enlightenment has become so overgrown we may never find it. I have come to the conclusion that many in the world are just plain too narcissistic, arrogant, and sadistic to care. The lack of empathy and value for human life in general is appalling and despicable. I cannot tell you the number of times fellow citizens have asked me how many sand-ni----- I killed during my tenure in Iraq. I despise these people (my fellow citizens), but moreover I feel sorry for them. The ignorance and baseness of thoughts like theirs are unforgivable and sad. I met fellow soldiers who took great pleasure in defecating in rations bags before throwing them out to Iraqi children. Men who stood around like big game hunters over the enemy dead; smoking and joking about the dead man’s erection, results of the onset of rigor mortis. This all taking place in a country where the number one video the year I was deployed, was of Nick Berg being summarily executed by decapitation. It is a country where death squads act as sectarian; judge, jury, and executioner; where people justify themselves and their religion by murdering women, children, and noncombatants in general. I have taken life so that I could live to see another day. That is the harsh reality of war and a cross I shall bear for the rest of my days. NEVER---did I enjoy it, quite the contrary in fact. How someone could not feel the shame of depriving another of his or her life is

I completely understand that there comes a time when you must preserve your life, your family’s lives and the liberties that you hold dear with uncompromising deadly force. You must have an obligation to defend these things, otherwise all is lost. However, to take pleasure in the suffering and death of others is psychological textbook deviancy in the form of sadism, and is inherently wrong no matter how you slice.
I think that we, as rational; (what a joke) human beings need to take a long hard look at who we are and how we treat each other. We all need to place more emphasis on tolerance and understanding; especially in the fields of religion and nationalism. We should love rather than fear, those who are different from ourselves. Otherwise, I am afraid we as a species are doomed.
“He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would fully suffice. This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, senseless brutality, deplorable love of country stance, how violently I hate all of this, how despicable and ignoble war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be part of so base an action! It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder
