Republicans Court the Bigot Vote

By Paul Waldman, TomPaine.com. Posted November 3, 2006.

In a number of key races, Republicans are running sexually charged ads and counting on the electoral power of racism to turn out voters in droves.

Ah, autumn -- a brisk snap in the air, the deep hues of trees changing colors ...and Republicans telling you that black men are coming to have sex with your daughters.

All right, that isn't completely accurate. Black men are coming to have sex with your daughters, Republicans warn, but gays are also going to turn you into one of them, and if we don't act soon the halls of power will be crawling with sex perverts.

We've all heard about the ad directed against Senate candidate Harold Ford in Tennessee, in which a ditzy young woman squeals, "I met Harold Ford at the Playboy party!" and closes the ad with, "Harold, call me!" -- and you know what they'll be doing if he does. But that isn't even the most racist ad that has been aired in that state, nor is the one that features thumping jungle drums every time Ford's name is mentioned. The most racist ad would have to be this radio spot, aired by a group called "Tennesseans for Truth":

"His daddy handed him his seat in Congress and his seat in the Congressional Black Caucus, an all-black group of congressmen who represent the interests of black people above all others ... Ford's Congressional Black Caucus secretly prepares and presents their own alternative budget to Congress each year to fund aid to black Americans. Discrimination at its worst ... Tennesseans want a color-blind senator, a real Tennessean representing all of us without discrimination."

Ford's opponent, Bob Corker, condemned that ad, as he did the "Call me!" ad (which was produced by the national Republican Party). But there are lots of Republicans in Tennessee who want to make extra sure that voters know that Harold Ford is black, black, black. Faced with a dynamic, skilled candidate in Ford and a mediocre one of their own in Corker, combined with a national mood decidedly unfavorable to Republicans, the GOP decided to hitch its wagon one more time to the bigot vote.

We can look on the bright side and say that what's bad for Ford may in general be good for Democrats. Ford, currently locked in a dead heat, is depending on the willingness of the good people of Tennessee to rise above their past and elect the first African-American senator from the South since Reconstruction. Elsewhere, black Republicans are finding that they have a lot of trouble convincing African Americans that the GOP has mended its ways, and the attention the Ford race has gotten isn't helping. Kenneth Blackwell in Ohio, Lynn Swann in Pennsylvania and Michael Steele in Maryland have all been unable to bring significant numbers of African Americans to their side, and look headed for defeat.

For years, Republicans have been saying they've put their past sins behind them and are reaching out to African-Americans. No one has done this with more enthusiasm and less substance than George W. Bush, whose 2004 campaign website featured a "compassion photo album" consisting of dozens of photos of the president with black and brown people. It was always a strategy aimed not at minorities themselves but at moderate whites who needed to be assured that Bush was different than his Republican forebears.

Since then, GOP chair Ken Mehlman has gone in front of one African-American audience after another to offer a non-apology apology for the way Republicans count on the electoral power of racism every two years. In fact, when Mehlman talks about this topic he puts his party in an absurdly positive light. "Some Republicans gave up on winning the African-American vote, looking the other way or trying to benefit politically from racial polarization. I am here today as the Republican chairman to tell you we were wrong," he told the NAACP last July.

But the Republican Party doesn't "try to benefit politically from racial polarization," they stoke and exploit racism and hatred. The "southern strategy," Willie Horton and the biennial efforts to prevent black people from voting are something more than "looking the other way." When election time approaches, they just can't help themselves. The GOP is addicted to the bigot vote, addicted to suppressing the votes of people whose skin is not white. Like every addict, they tell themselves they can stop whenever they want -- I'll kick next year, I just need it one more time to get me through this election.

I live about 6 miles from the edge of Harold Ford's House District and have been watching him for years. He is the lesser of two evils in the choice presented in the Tennessee Senate Race. Corker would be nothing but a NeoCon rubber stamp for sale to business interests and BushCo.

What bothers me about Ford first and foremost is the hereditary seat thing. The hubris of a then 25-year-old green kid out of Law School running for a house seat his dad was giving up because of an ongoing scandal still eats at me now. This practice of setting up your kids/spouses/etc. for seats in Congress is about as elitist and un-american as it gets. He's not alone. Sen. Lincoln Chafee, appointed to fill out daddy's seat and Sen. Lisa Murkowski, appointed by her daddy raise similar concerns.

Second, is that he is a marginal Democrat. His voting record is far more Conservative Southern Democrat than progressive. Despite representing a district full of largely poor working-class people of color he supported the Bankruptcy Reform Bill and other stuff worthy of a NeoCon southern Republican.

Don't get me wrong- he's a smart guy and very capable. He's also a DNC-type Democrat and that bothers me. He has held one of the most secure House seats in the nation and had a largely free hand to vote his conscience and instead voted in a far more conservative manner than he had to. Instead of using his electoral security to be an outspoken leader he has gone along with some of the worst legislative atrocities of the Bush Administration.

Maybe it was all calculated for cover for a future Senate run. East Tennessee is as NeoCon/Evangelical as it gets in the south with the exception of a few places like Knoxville. Even with his fairly conservative voting record, the fact that he is not an obvious choice over the idiot Corker tells you a lot about the voting tendencies of Tennessee.

He's better than Corker would be or than Frist has been. Just not by that much of a margin.

Corker plugs up the body politic with gross manipulative ads while other Republican politicians slink back to the worst days of racist terrorism. Republicans should move forward with a positive message instead trying to turn us back to the days of terrorizing blacks and other nonwhites. This is America putting its worst foot forward and let's hope the Republicans trip over their gross propaganda and be splattered with their own mud.

Americans are not FOOLED

Republicans think that most Americans are fooled by the evil tactics they have done and continue to do to stay in power. The racist ad in Tennessee against Harold Fold will not succeed. The twisting of Kerry's comments to benefit Republicans will not work. The insulting of Americans intelligence by thinking we will forget how the CONGRESS and the President have screwed up this country. I won't foget and I'm sure millions more haven't forgotten and will not forget the lies, lack of congressional duties, corruption, deaths of innocent millions in an unjust war, millions without healthcare, the middle class decline, millions without jobs, the need for campaigns to be publicly funded, etc.

You name it and the Republicans have insulted our intelligence by thinking we don't remember or know how they have catered to the rich, slowly reduced the middle class and stepped on the head of the poor repeatedly. We won't forget that the Republican congress brought up the issue of flag burning to delay from discussing more important issues. I won't forget and I know that millions more won't either.

It seems the Republicans are only good for dividing this country up by racial sterotypes. Do we need to continue to live in the past? Enough is enough and it's time that the American People tell BUSH and CONGRESS that we will no longer be misled or sidetracked by petty wedge issues. It's time for a change in this country. It's time for a REVOLUTION and that time is NOW.

Thank you Lou Dobbs of CNN and Keith Olbermann of MSNBC for the work you do in highlighting the idiotic things Mr. BUSH and his stupid followers of the Republican Party have done and continue to do to destry this country. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

again with the fake choices of left/right that the elite forces down our throats. Like everything in this world is an absolute black or white issue and you only/always have 2 choices.
Vote Red! We will scare about crime, race, and those dangerous homos coming to get your schoolkids and boyscouts! I'm so scared I'll vote!

Vote Blue! We will scare you about old people starving on the street! No medical care! Schools without textbooks! Having to go to church! The racists are coming to get you! I'm so scared I'll vote for you!

Vote either way and lose your freedoms, lose more in taxes, fund the corporate greed-driven state, and lose national soverignity.

How About None of The Above

I'm a Tennessean that lives in Shelby County. While I can't stand Corker and his Republican toadies, let me tell ya, the Ford's aren't much better.

This is a professional political family that, in my opinion, has largely abandoned blacks in Shelby County. In fact, almost all of the so-called black leadership in Shelby County and Memphis has abandoned the black community.

Horrible schools, high drop out rates, broken families and blighted neighborhoods full of uninsured people being victimized by drug selling thugs is one side of Memphis. While these conditions have worsened, the other side, funded by the white politico-industrialist elites and aided by black politicians, approve new developments for million dollar homes, build NBA arenas and shopping centers that wipe out tracts of forests outside of the city's core. Their children all go to cushy, fancy pants private schools, almost all mostly white.

The Ford family has catered to these people and helped a system of disparity flourish in Memphis since the 1970's.

And remember, Jr. voted for the war in Iraq.

There is a Green candidate in Tennessee, Chris Lugo, but he's been predictably ignored by almost all. Listed on the ballot as an "independent." (I thought the Green Party was an approved TN party).

To hell with Ford, to hell with all the Democratic and Republican lackies that keep the machine moving along. Until there is a viable third party for grass roots democracy, nothing will ever change.

The Bigot Vote

It comes as no surprise to me that the GOP has a corner on the market with respect to the racist vote. This situation has existed since the campaign of 1968 and Nixon's so-called "Southern Strategy". The one good result of that was the purge from the democratic party of the "boll weevil" Democrats. From 1932 until 1968 these people voted for the Dems only out of force of habit. They couldn't vote for the party of Lincoln because he freed the slaves - always a point of contention with these assholes. Richard Nixon and his gang effectively ended that situation. Since that time, the GOP has been in the pocket of the forces of hate and intolerance. Don't be fooled by the occasaional Uncle Toms they trot out in order to give the party a diverse face - it's all a sham. One of their most famous "token negroes" is Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, who throughout his career opposed affirmative action. Do you have ANY idea where Clarence Thomas would be today were it not for affirmative action? He'd be mounted on someone's front lawn, wearing a jockey uniform, holding a lamp.

There are still people out there who still insist on referring to it as "the party of Lincoln". Don't ever call it that again. Abraham Lincoln's influence on the Republican Party ended at exactly 7:22 on the morning of April 15,1865 when he breathed his last breath.

GET OUT THE VOTE!!!

Anyone old enough to remember the 1988 presidential campaign should remember the Willie Horton commercial designed by the elder Bush's Karl Rove, Lee Atwater, which many commentators say contributed to Michael Dukakis' defeat.

Let's face facts. The Republicans know how to manipulate the message thourgh the medium. They have a better grasp of retail marketing and advertising; they understand that a majority of working-class white Americans are closet bigots, if not outright racists. It is a toxic cocktail designed to keep poor white Americans voting against their own best, economic self-interests.

district in 2004. Bob Menefee, a 26 year old middle class Democrat runs with virtually no support from the party. Oh they'll give him a few thousand dollars and tell him to get lost ! Harold Ford, on the other hand, comes from an elitist and BRIBED set of folks (didn't his uncle come under fire on bribery charges?). By the way this pattern is going on, the only way non-monied Democrats are going to win is stay populist. Luckily, Jon Tester of MT has been doing just that and even though polls used to show him as 20-30 points behind, he never gave up and I think he's going to win in MT. Likewise, I look forward to James Webb here in VA defeating George Allen and like Tester, Webb never gave up even if he faced threats of losing funding from his very own party for being bold. It's a trip to watch ESTABLISHMENT "Democrats" finally aiding him when they're going to be in for a HUGE surprise once they find out that folks like Webb and Tester are real reformers compared to CORRUPT DLCers such as Harold "privatize social security and stay the course in Iraq Blue-DAWG Democrat" Ford !

Just how did Republicans learn about a 1 minute (accidental) phone sex call?
Posted by: don_alejandro on Nov 3, 2006 6:56 AM

Has anyone wondered how Republican campaign operatives even knew about a one minute phone call? Are they legally allowed access opponents phone records? And do they have all the phone sex numbers memorized so that they immediately recognized one?

I suspect this is just the tip of one of the illegal surveillance icebergs. Bush claims to be listening only to terrorists, but I suspect in reality a significant portion of Bush’s secret surveillance activities are focused on listening to political opponents (and allies) in much the same way J. Edgar Hoover abused his power.

One thing that distrubs and frustrates me deeply is, every media source I read or saw commented that the Tennessee attack ad was racist. Not ONE that I read or saw, however, dared to comment about it being OVERTLY sexist. To dare to suggest that women be treated as whole human beings rather than as sex objects---that would just be downright un-American! Forget, just for a moment, any threat to existing power structures if gender equity were the norm; just think what it would do to our *economy* if we stopped dangling women as depersonalized fishing lures and sexual servants! :0

Shows that GOP is and what they assume about Tennessee

As someone who lives in East TN, the heart of conservative, Bible-thumping Appalachia, I have seen how the Groping Old Pervert party has used sex, sleaze, and race for nearly all my life. This ad shows what the GOP really is - a bunch of racist, sexist, hypocrites who'd do anything for power. Crooker is no different, he's a Dubya wannabe. He froze firemen's wages while he gave himself three pay raises, he's being sued by citizens of Chattanooga (still in litigation, he says he can't discuss it) over a possibly illegal, definitely shady land deal in which he destroyed land donated to the city for parkland - a deal in which he personally profitted $4.5 million dollars. He won't release his tax returns, and there is evidence that he evaded taxes for several years. He made most of his $200 million fortune after he was elected mayor of Chattanooga - and that really sounds fishy. He won't discuss Iraq, Social Security, or issues, simply saying the he represents the values of Tennesseans, Bulls--t!!! He represents the values of the moneyed elite and just wants more. He's a W clone and that's why I, a southern, white Tennessee grandmother voted for Ford! At least he states his positions and doesn't try to hide from them. At least he confronts those in power and confronted Corker about these issues and Corker wouldn't discuss them.

I think its great that the Republicans only have the bizarre base left to appeal too in the final hour. The Repuks are being reduced to this bizarre base and the moneygrubbers. I do not think the polls are accurate. Many fiscal conservatives are going to disappear next week even if in public they still support the Repuks. Christians all over the country are reevaluating the their alliance in the political process. They will disappear also. I think real Americans are going to make their presence known by either a vote or the lack of it. The real Americans who do not start it they finish it. Unfortunately, there were not any real Americans in DC on Sept. 11. The real Americans who will not give up their freedom to be protected from the Muslim hoards, the Jews, the American Indians or some other group to be named later. The give me freedom or give me death Americans. We did not need a Patriot act we needed the people in DC to act like patriots. This is the beginning of the end of the government of the few, by the few and for the few. The grand experiment has failed has failed thanks to Bush.

I have watched several political ads on the American television stations and some of them are down right nasty and evil.

The Repugs(just a nickname) are sooooo obssessed with sexuality its unbeleivable. They go to such extremes that amount to them acting out their fantasies in ads and attacks of others.
The idea that they even waste sooo much money and time chasing the bigot vote is a sign of just how low they are going.

The Repugs have some serious mental problems when they are going to such extremes to resort to courting the bigot vote. thats not leadership, its desperation at its worst.

As a neighbor to the north, I sure hope the Repugs lose majorly.
I have spoken recently with a few guys visiting here in Canada from the States , and boy oh boy , it sure sounds like Bush and his gang of thugs have destroyed the dream of freedom for Americans.

Black men are coming to have sex with your daughters...

Yeah, right!

Isn't it just amazing in the year 2006 that some white boys (can't dignify them with the word 'men') are still overly concerned about the mythical big black penis that they'll even vote against their own best interests to keep their 'precious' white girls from 'falling prey' to a black man?

And these guys are supposed to be the 'superior race'? Compared to what, ants?

This entire ad campaign would be funny if it weren't indicative of just how backwards people are when it comes to the subject of interracial relationships, especially those between blacks and whites.

Besides, what does any of this have to do with where either candidate stands on the issues?

Hey, I have a question. If Harold Ford likes white women, then how can pointing out that he likes white women be racist?

I saw the ad as more of a family values (sex/strippers) type of deal. Of course, as far as that's concerned, this photo of Corker's daughter might be good for a Democrat leaning 527 campaign:

Obsession with sex: a hallmark of religious authoritarian systems

The bizarre psychology involved is well-described in this article, but the roots of this kind of behavior should be examined. Sex is generally 'normal human behavior', but by associating sex with shame and guilt, and offering redemption through the intervention of a religious 'father figure', one creates a dependency on the religious authorities. This also works well with advertising - sex sells even better than fear does when it comes to consumer products. Fear of the 'terrrists is used to sell wars; sexual frustration is used to sell cars.

These propaganda strategies result in people running around in psycho-sexual straightjackets; if you're told repeatedly to not think about sex, that ends up being all you think about. The deliberate creation of sexual tension, followed by a kind of euphoric release of tension at evangelical-style revival meetings, where the collection plate and the political message are also passed around - traditionally, this was known as 'the fleecing of the flock'.

Whether it's religion or advertising, this is the kind of thing that emotional propaganda experts revel in. People who want thousands of followers have found that associating race and sex and fear is an effective approach - Hitler's race theories and stadium 'revivals' were based in part on such strategies. These methods really amount to cult brainwashing techniques.

Include today's widespread chemical dependencies - everything from Prozac to nicotine to cocaine - and you have something that looks a lot like Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World." It'd be interesting to know what fraction of Cush's 'social conservative base' is on Prozac-type medication.

Playing on this psycho-sexual dynamic by running political ads with racist and sexist overtones - nothing but meat and potatoes for Karl Rove and the neocon perception managers. It does reveal Republican strategy, however - whip up fear and hate among the susceptible in the hope they'll come out and vote Republican.

Of course, who knows what the crazy neocon Republicans are really thinking? "...as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns -- the ones we don't know we don't know." -Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of Peace and Truth

Rumsfeld left out the most important category, vis-a-vis the bloody Iraq debacle - the 'known knowns' that he thought he knew that turned out to really be a load of bull. There's mess, he says. Like when 18-yr old kids are blown into little bits of bone and flesh, it makes a mess. Just don't let anyone take any photos, and everything will be fine...

How in the world do you call the ad directed against Senate candidate Harold Ford in Tennessee, in which a ditzy young woman squeals, "I met Harold Ford at the Playboy party!" and closes the ad with, "Harold, call me!" is racist?!

The ad goes through a plethora of issues and race isn't even mentioned. If you people are seeing racism in this ad, then I would submit that you people are the racists. It's painting him as a playboy. What difference does it make that the girl is white? Is he not supposed to have a white playgirl?

You guys always want to paint Republicans as racists, but I really think that the Democrats have proven by far that they are the real racists.

I find it so funny how the Demos aren't mentioning the Hurricane Katrina debacle in their political ads. Why aren't the demos using this against the repugs to their advantage? But we can focus on such an obvious tact used by the repugs everytime. What are we in this country a bunch of Pavlov's dogs in human form? I think that not acknowledging the Bush's admin total lack of apathy and disregard for that situation is racist in itself considering that there were mostly black people affected.
With the Iraq and Hurricance Katrina debacles happening/ed under Bush watch, it's like he is geting away w/ murder anyway.

I am always astonished when I see an African American who is republican. Why would any black(using the term "black" because it is shorter than printing African American)person choose to be a republican. It is like cutting your own throat. The Republican party has been the party of the Redneck,Southern good ole boys for many many years now. We know what they think of anyone who isnt white. When I see Rice,Powell,Watts and other black republicans..I have to wonder.."how much money does it take to sell out your people?". I have lived in the south and have seen racism first hand. I lived in NC and supported Harvey Gantt in his race against the ulitmate Redneck racist..Jesse Helms. I am white by the way. I actually had to street fight to protect my best friend(an African American)from a bunch of rednecks. I urge, not only blacks, but any minority, working class and poor whites...actually anyone who isnt a millionaire to vote Democrat. The republican party is an evil,self-serving group that are in the process of implementing a total police state here in the U.S. It is happening faster than many realise. Wake up people! It is time to fight! Take back our country. Make the constitution viable once again. Stop the raping of our constitution and our environment. We have the numbers..they have the money...we cannot lose. If something isnt done soon...I fear that our country is on the verge of a civil war. A class war. Go to the polls..vote Democrat and maybe, just maybe we can prevent the country from total collapse. Thank you.

So Corker condems the Ad but of course doesn't DEMAND it be taken down .Just like Bush reponded to McCain's comments on SwiftBoat Ads but NEVER said they should be removed . These bastards love to pretend to be above the fray while enjoying all tha advantages from the attack Ads
they "condem"

and it also drives conservatives to the polls. The "black man going to have sex with your daughters" may not seem to be the most racist ad to Waldman, but it is the most effective at exciting conservatives, because sex really gets their undies in a bunch.

A well-written article which had me in stitches with the thought of Tinky Winky trying to turn Jerry Falwell gay.
