The Ohio Republican Party sent out a press release attacking Democratic Senatorial candidate Sherrod Brown for accepting the help of liberal talk show host Al Franken on the campaign trail. The news release contained a completely fabricated quote:

It is not surprising that Sherrod Brown is enlisting the help of a Hollywood liberal, who like him, is so far out of the mainstream of Ohio values. What is troubling is that Brown would solicit support from someone [Franken] who compared conservatives to Nazis “who should drink poison and die.” (Full text here)

The quote is actually satire by Bernard Goldberg.

The Ohio Republicans can't even smear people competently.

The press release also included a fake photograph of Franken in adult diapers and bunny ears. Franken's staff have since produced the AP photograph that was the basis of the forgery.
