Does Bush Think War with Iran Is Preordained?

By Chris Hedges, Truthdig. Posted October 10, 2006.

The Christian right sees an apocalyptic nuclear war with Iran as a vision set forth in the Bible. Bush himself may be a believer, too.

The aircraft carrier Eisenhower, accompanied by the guided-missile cruiser USS Anzio, guided-missile destroyer USS Ramage, guided-missile destroyer USS Mason and the fast-attack submarine USS Newport News, is, as I write, making its way to the Straits of Hormuz off Iran. The ships will be in place to strike Iran by the end of the month. It may be a bluff. It may be a feint. It may be a simple show of American power. But I doubt it.

War with Iran -- a war that would unleash an apocalyptic scenario in the Middle East -- is probable by the end of the Bush administration. It could begin in as little as three weeks. This administration, claiming to be anointed by a Christian God to reshape the world, and especially the Middle East, defined three states at the start of its reign as "the Axis of Evil." They were Iraq, now occupied; North Korea, which, because it has nuclear weapons, is untouchable; and Iran. Those who do not take this apocalyptic rhetoric seriously have ignored the twisted pathology of men like Elliott Abrams, who helped orchestrate the disastrous and illegal contra war in Nicaragua, and who now handles the Middle East for the National Security Council. He knew nothing about Central America. He knows nothing about the Middle East. He sees the world through the childish, binary lens of good and evil, us and them, the forces of darkness and the forces of light. And it is this strange, twilight mentality that now grips most of the civilian planners who are barreling us towards a crisis of epic proportions.

These men advocate a doctrine of permanent war, a doctrine which, as William R. Polk points out, is a slight corruption of Leon Trotsky's doctrine of permanent revolution. These two revolutionary doctrines serve the same function, to intimidate and destroy all those classified as foreign opponents, to create permanent instability and fear and to silence domestic critics who challenge leaders in a time of national crisis. It works. The citizens of the United States, slowly being stripped of their civil liberties, are being herded sheep-like, once again, over a cliff.

But this war will be different. It will be catastrophic. It will usher in the apocalyptic nightmares spun out in the dark, fantastic visions of the Christian right. And there are those around the president who see this vision as preordained by God; indeed, the president himself may hold such a vision.

The hypocrisy of this vaunted moral crusade is not lost on those in the Middle East. Iran actually signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. It has violated a codicil of that treaty written by European foreign ministers, but this codicil was never ratified by the Iranian parliament. I do not dispute Iran's intentions to acquire nuclear weapons nor do I minimize the danger should it acquire them in the estimated five to 10 years. But contrast Iran with Pakistan, India and Israel. These three countries refused to sign the treaty and developed nuclear weapons programs in secret. Israel now has an estimated 400 to 600 nuclear weapons. The word "Dimona," the name of the city where the nuclear facilities are located in Israel, is shorthand in the Muslim world for the deadly Israeli threat to Muslims' existence. What lessons did the Iranians learn from our Israeli, Pakistani and Indian allies?

Given that we are actively engaged in an effort to destabilize the Iranian regime by recruiting tribal groups and ethnic minorities inside Iran to rebel, given that we use apocalyptic rhetoric to describe what must be done to the Iranian regime, given that other countries in the Middle East such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia are making noises about developing a nuclear capacity, and given that, with the touch of a button Israel could obliterate Iran, what do we expect from the Iranians? On top of this, the Iranian regime grasps that the doctrine of permanent war entails making "preemptive" and unprovoked strikes.

Yes! The war is inevitable! It will be a part of the bitter story of American collapse. A story that already began in 1861. This isn't that much about Bush as the US:s will to remain on top, and the desperate things some people will be ready to do to keep it that way. They will ofcourse in the end lose. They had two choises;the easy way of excepting a global, multicultural and multipolar world, ot the HARD WAY! They have chosen the HARD WAY, and this is what they will eventually get. War with Iran will only be the beginning of the end!

This is how a theocracy works

As America feels itself shriveling and wastng away, she becomes ever more desperate and clutches ever more firmly onto its shabby excuse for spirituality for rescue. Of course, the church has no answers except to pray harder aganst the enemy, blindly obey the current "leadership" and give more on Sundays.

With this kind of moral example, America has no problem justifying anything it sees fit to do, however immoral, and there is hardly a peep of objection from the congregation.

Why would they? They learned character and morality in church where they talk the talk but don't walk the walk, and where their clergy has no problem with war.

As America inches closer to its third war under this Christian* president, there is nary a peep of objection coming from the church. This is the same kind of help religion religion has offered the world for centuries: war.

Nor does the clergy teach them that the president is wrong to lie America into war. Or, to steal from the poor and give to the rich. Worthless. The church has been an abject failure as a moral example or teacher, in the US anyway.

---

* Yeah, I know, I know. He's not a "real" Christian. Two things: (1) Nobody was saying that until a few years into his administration when it was clear that he had no morals and was incompetent, and they wanted to distance themselves from his failures, and (2) He's as real as they get, if by real you mean actually in existance and signficantly impacting the rest of reality. Could Jesus pass that test?

Religion is not the real motive.

To sell more weapons, to increase the costs of oil, to create a police-state in america and later in europe (when the UE will be on its knees), to give israel the definitive influence in the ME area, to move another step forward the American Global Empire. These are the main real reasons for a war against Iran, and behind it is the same military-industrial complex Eisenhower warned about.
I don't believe that the religious motives are really important in this scenario, aside of giving the false impression of some moral motives behind all this horrible catastrophic thing they have prepared for us.
Why such a phony reason? Because it fits with the simplified world they have in mind for us, and because that's how little freedom of movement their crippled imagination has. We shouldn't fall for that.

The cowards want to attack Iran also because, by the way, it poses no real threat. It has no weapons of mass destruction, just like Iraq, Yugoslavia, Somalia, Vietnam, Nicaragua etc etc. The U.S. military is basically MADE OF COWARDS. Who else would torture people if not cowards by the way?

Our monstrous elite doesn't believe in anything else but the reasons of its own greed, the desperate spinning around without grasping of the lost souls who inhabits it. Or something like that.
The reason why they are so dangerous is because behind their big guns are very small, frightened persons.

(I am feeling that I will find myself believing in God, waiting for the bombs or the dogs to come. That's all right, I've always been searching anyway.)

I would like to make a comment on Robert Greenwald's Documentary, "Iraq For Sale" in which most of those civilians that went over there, claimed they went there to help rebuild Iraq. My guess is, it was a way of making a fast buck and not have to pay taxes on it. It didn't take long though, to find out how ruthless corporate america is and can be. I have watched that Docmentary four times already, and it makes me more pissed off everytime. Robert Greenwald needs to commended for putting together a good piece of work. For those of you who haven't seen it, I highly recommend you do. You can order it online for about $13.

The Devil made Bush invade Iraq

Evidence of Dub-ya's messianic thinking was provided by a BBC transcript published on October 6, 2005. The text quoted two Palestinian leaders, Prime Minister Abu Mazen and his deputy, Nabil Shaath, after they met privately with George W. in June 2003.

According to the British report, Bush said to Mazen and Shaath, "I'm driven with a mission from God. He told me, 'George, go and fight those terrorists in Afghanistan' and I did. Then God told me, 'George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq' and I did. Now, again, I feel God's words coming to me: 'Go get the Palestinians their state and get the Israelis their security, and get peace in the Middle East,' and, by God, I'm gonna do it."

Assuming he wasn't fibbing and God isn't stupid, there can only be two explanations for Shrub the Charlatan hearing words in his head. He's either schizophrenic or the voice belonged to Dick Cheney.

Instead of a "mission from God," how about "The Devil made me do it!"

Cheers everyone, Doug

Where is it written warmongers go to heaven?

Destroying the world, living utmost hypocritical, selfish and pathetic lives, killing countless people, and whatever else...where is it written that those responsible, those actively seeking this destruction, or even promoting and supporting or merely believing in it, that 'heaven' (if ever there is one) or some Jesus or god, are waiting for these kind of people???
Christianity has made up another gruesome place for the likes of those: 'hell'.
They probably know that, deep down, and they're just set to share their hell with everybody else, by creating hell on earth.

Life is the most precious gift there is. Given by 'god', the universe, grace, whatever you might believe in. And this earth is what we have been given to live on. This earth could be the not-illusive heaven, for everybody. Which takes sharing, courage, selflessness, giving, responsebility, love...

But imagine 'christians' working towards something like thát. Nahhh...destruction is so much easier. Why care about others?!

Bush as Satan?
Posted by: Dianka on Oct 10, 2006 6:27 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
On points regarding the Armageddon/the Apocalypse, there are many points of similarity between George W. Bush and the AntiChrist, with one glaring exception. Remember that Satan was originally a powerful and beloved soul in the heirarchy of Heaven. In short, he was cast out of heaven when he wanted power over God. Satan is described as not merely "beautiful to the eye", but is consistently described in terms of his intelligence. Enough said?

There are many similarities between our understanding of "the End Times" and today's events, and this has been true of many, many periods of history. The bottom line for believers is that the Bible says that we won't know "the hour or the day" of Christ's return, and so we're supposed to live with the understanding that it could happen this afternoon or a thousand years from now. The point: not to live in fear, as if you thought you would die tomorrow, but to keep your priorities in life straight. (Don't waste your life on material acquisition, because all of that could be wiped out in a moment, etc.)

That being said, I might be wrong here, but it has been my impression all along that George W. Bush really doesn't care one way or another. He takes the presidency as seriously as he takes a video game. Believers have to recognize that the Bush administration does, by definition, consist of the classic servants of Satan. We know this by the unnerving zeal for war that has come to define this administration. Satan is defined in terms of strife, chaos, lies, death and destruction and an absence of justice.

Ask me a few months ago, and I would have said we were on a certain path to attack. But a number of things have occurred since then to make me question this. For one, we see the utter impotence of Bush in the face of the North Korean test. We see the quagmire of Iraq not getting better. We see the gross incompetence across all levels of government. The machine is grinding to a halt.

I just don't think the US can launch an attack with the state of the military today. Bush is weak. The rest of the world can see he is weak. That is why every two-bit dictator is thumbing his nose at the US.

Blair is in even a greater mess. His government also barely functions. Ask anyone who lives in the UK.

As much as we would like to blame others for what is going on, it is important to remember that we as a nation have created what exists today. We are all guilty of the imperialism, the despotism and the exploitation that exists today. This is just the final scene of our own creation and demise. Your tax dollars at work.

The Creator vs. the Destroyer
Posted by: cielo on Oct 10, 2006 7:49 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Monotheism was begun in Iran with Zoroastrianism, upon which Christianity and Islam were heavily influenced. Christianity believes in an all powerful god and a lesser devil, and that good naturally wins over evil, as it is more powerful in the end. The ancient Persian religion Zoroastrianism has two equal forces, the Creator and the Destroyer. Both powers exist within all humanity, and making the moral choice to side with the Creator takes some effort, meaning working for social justice and the good of mankind (ie., Life is a dualist struggle between good and evil, not a place where you are good if you go to church once a week to socialize with your friends, and otherwise support war and hatred against others you know nothing about).

Unfortunately the Destroyer has been busy, but it will have to fight to the last drop of blood against a people who have fought of conquerors for the last 2,500 years. Even the Mongol Destroyers under Ghengis Khan were not able to destroy Persia (Iran) in the end, despite killing much of the population, and the Mongols weren't afraid to die. Persian culture was just too strong, and its brilliant influence is evident throughout central Asia all the way to India (the cities of Esphahan, Samarkand, Khiva, and Agra and the magnificent Taj Mahal).

Will an army run by chickenhawks who have never experienced war, leading largely fearful soldiers who are mostly ignorant of where they've been sent be able to conquer such a place that has been dominant in the region artistically and militarily for thousands of years? A place where civilization and monotheistic religion began? The land of Persia, now Iran, where great culture, art, and architecture have been known and respected all along the Silk Road, from the Mediterranean to India and China, through all the 'Stans.

Iran is a country that has always rebelled against foreign influence and conquerors, be they the Greeks, the Romans, or the Arabs. Despite a lousy 25 years of religious fanaticism (again, of rebellion against Western foreign influence and insatiable quest for oil resources, through reactionary revolution), even today, Iran is too beautiful of a country to be crudely destroyed. But beauty obviously doesn't stop the Destroyer, who thrives on its Destruction. I fear that only running out of fuel will.

Would they support a military attack on Iran, and can Bush attack Iran without their support?

The Iranians have the ability to make things MUCH worse for us in Iraq, if they want to. Those 140,000 US troops now in Iraq are basically hostages to the Iranians, and the Generals have to think about that as they contemplate an attack on Iran.

Bush could be a total loon, for all I know, but he still needs people to follow his orders for any of this to happen (unless he plans to fly the bombers himself).

An excellent point, just above: will the top brass actually obey an order to plunge themselves into destruction?

I never thought I'd be calling for a military coup, but if Chris Hedges is right, that may be all that can save us - and about a million Iranians. Talk of impeachment or winning elections is beside the point now: the attack is likely to come before the elections, or before the new Congress takes office; and what makes you think a new Congress would, or could, stop him? Top Democrats are trying to out-hawk him.

Is there someone out there who can call on the military to refuse orders to attack Iran, and actually be heard by them? None of us qualify; we need to reach someone they will hear (Powell? Zinni? A whole contingent of retired brass?). I'm going to talk to Veterans For Peace, see if they have suggestions (the organization is another possibility, but not as mainstream). If you have further ideas, please post them.

We don't have much time.

First of all, this article does a disservice to the American people by portraying Bush as inspired by religious motivations. That's exactly what the conservative Christians 'need to hear' in order to keep their support. On right-wing blogs, this article can be cited as evidence of the left's hatred for religion, and thus it can be used to 'rally the troops', who seem to be absolutely disgusted with Mark Foley and the dishonesty of the Bush Admin.

Bush is not religous, he's a cynical greedy slimeball who does anything his handlers (Rove, Schultz and Kissenger) tell him to do - while wearing the mantle of religious fervor. This is blatantly obvious to anyone who looks at the details. What do you think will happen to oil prices if Iran is attacked? $100/ barrel minimum. What will happen to the value of Exxon, Chevron, Shell, BP, Conoco, Occidental, etc. if this happens? Their reserves will increase in value - maybe even double. New world record profit margins for his billionaire cronies - that's all Bush cares about.

I wouldn't be surprised if we suddenly hear that Iran has attacked a US warship in the Persian Gulf, and that 'we have no choice' but to respond. Would that be Karl Rove's "October Surprise"?

Why is alternet publishing this crap? Would alternet consider writing a brief explanation of its editorial policy?

A cabal composed of interlocking elite that runs:

Corporate Mass Media

Defense (especially DARPA and Pentagon)

Military Industries that cannot survive without war

Intelligence Agencies
(NSA, NSC, CIA, FBI, DIA, Military affiliates, International interlocking intelligence agencies)

Black Operations

Federation of American Scientists

Privately owned Central Banking System such as the Federal Reserve and Bank of England (Bank of International Settlements is the central bank to all banks)

Oil, Food, IP, Technology, Pharmaceuticals, Chemicals... transnational conglomerates

Curriculum fabrication for education (emphasis on memorization, not critical thinking) & destruction of libraries (disappearing important books and documents)

Intelligence run globalist banking systems (USAid, IMF, World Bank,...

Import Export Banks, WTO

Religious Hate Ministries (especially those that use trauma and brainwashing) or any ministry that preaches the opposite of peace, tolerance, kindness, respect for others and our world)

The Big Lie of National Security to hide the hideousness of reality behind the pretense of transparency (good is bad and up is down)

It's probably a matter of time when we attack Iran. Expect more deaths, ruined cities, broken people, broken dreams, broken hopes. I have nothing against Iranians and I hope we don't treat them as savagely as the Iraqi people. How much more violence can we create on this planet? We're heading into a danger zone if we invade Iran. We must not let it happen.

I thought it suspicous that this new MCA2006 was signed with little to no debate or decent. Now I know why: it will better take care of those still claiming to have some "rights" to know the charges against them when they're being sent to the KB&R camps, once the "big war" commences.

Rational thought says no, there's no way Bush & Co. would involve the US in another war, let alone with North Korea cock-blocking at the moment. However, these people aren't rational and in fact, only believe in the reality they create. Don't be surprised if somehow North Korea is linked to Iran and the civil war in Iraq. Then there's always the issue of another "terrorist attack/9/11." Any dog will attack you if you back it into a corner or against a wall, let alone a mad dog. Of course, nuclear war will kill many people but, let's be honest about this, the elites of the world (not only this country for, unlike many on the left, I see what's happening now as a global problem and not just the result of a few mad hatter in Washington) do not care about the lives of the people unless they can help them amass more profit. Our lives are expendable. The elites do not fear nuclear war because they feel they can survive it, make the civilians that survive work as their slaves, and remake the world in their image. Now, the air might not be breathable, the water undrinkable, and assuming numerous nukes are going off, who knows how the Earth will resond (in terms of gravity, plate movements, glacial sheet melting, weather, etc.). The world, post nuclear war, might not be a place humans can live in. Perhaps there's a reason Venus is visible in the sky prior to the sun rising and after its setting: as a warning. However, never underestimate the power of arrogance combined with ignorance, of which those in power seem to have much. Again: these people do not care about anyone not in their circles of power and have shown, through numerous examples throughout history, that they'll willingly sacrifice civilian lives if it serves their objectives.

I am depressed by the news, but not surprised. The state of things, now, has been a long time in coming. Perhaps, given the path mankind has taken these thousands of years, we need to start over? Nonetheless, I'm not awaiting the "rapture" anymore than I am seeing Israel bomb Lebanon again. While we've got some time left, smash somethin', have a drink, get fucked, and enjoy your life while you can still live it.

this time W will want to fire but unless he wants to fly his old National Guard plane into the govt buildings in Tehran, nobody is going to Iran. Our millitary knows it was used and abused in Iraq. It is not going to commit suicide in the vast mountains of Iran, and be harassed by milliions of gurerillas and their supporters. Plus most generals these days do graduate studies in policy and international affairs. They are not going to destroy the energy production of the Middle East over some fairy tale written by a pschotic in the first or second centuries.

To hell with "revolution". We need a coup d'etat to get rid of this little ignorant jerk. And he orders troops or planes into Iran, he and Cheney will be breaking rocks.

This will not be an Afghanistan. This will not be an Iraq.

Iran is much more equipped to do alot of damage to US forces and allies.

Iran also has many allies who will rise up to attack US interests.

Venezuela and the 120+ Non-aligned nations will not sit idly by. If we think we saw high fuel costs this summer, an Iran war will make that look like the good old days.

Look for days of shortages, higher prices and mandatory drafts. Watch in horror as more of our young people are sent off to die for the war profiteers.

We will have oursleves to blame for allowing this administration to continue unabated in its pursuit of world-wide dominance and empire. We will have ourselves to blame wh
