Is Olbermann on Thin Ice?

By Jeff Cohen . Posted October 4, 2006.

A cable news vet fears for Olbermann's job in a conservative landscape.

I fear for Keith Olbermann.

Like so many others who hunger for some journalistic independence on TV news, I often marvel at Olbermann's dogged reporting and unique commentary. In a cable news environment of conformity and conservatism, the MSNBC host takes on the Bush administration for "demonizing dissent," for abusing our Constitutional traditions, for "taking cynical advantage of the unanimity and love [following 9/11] and transmuting it into fraudulent war and needless death."

Only Olbermann talks about Team Bush's "monstrously transforming [9/11 unity] into fear and suspicion, and turning that fear into the campaign slogan of three elections." He was virtually alone on TV news in seriously reporting on 2004 election irregularities in Ohio, and in exploring the pre-Iraq war Downing Street Memos indicating White House deception. In recent months, his prime targets seem to have evolved from softer ones like Bill O'Reilly to bigger game: Bush and his minions. It's worth noting that strong criticism of an extremist presidency hardly makes Olbermann a leftist. I remember him as the whimsical sports guy on ESPN.

I remember his first go-round on MSNBC in 1998 when he could have sued his bosses for repetitive stress disorder for having to host scores of Lewinsky episodes on the road to Clinton's impeachment -- an impeachment that may well have been impossible if not for the complicity of TV news.

It's obvious his bosses at MSNBC/NBC/GE never envisioned the increasingly bold Olbermann of recent months. It's likely that Olbermann himself could not have foreseen his current role as the lone voice of those who feel assaulted by a cable news business dominated by the O'Reillys and Hannitys.

So why do I fear for Olbermann? Because I know his bosses. In the runup to the Iraq war, I too worked for MSNBC -- as an on-air pundit and a senior producer on the prime-time Donahue show.

As I detail in my new book Cable News Confidential: My Misadventures in Corporate Media, the suits at MSNBC/NBC muzzled us and ultimately terminated us. They feared independent journalism and serious dissent. They smeared Bush critics, with MSNBC's editor-in-chief actually going on air -- without evidence -- to accuse Iraq WMD skeptic Scott Ritter of being a paid agent of Saddam Hussein.

Olbermann has been gaining in audience ratings. That provides him some security. But perhaps not enough.

When Donahue was terminated three weeks before the Iraq invasion, it was MSNBC's most watched program. Canceling your top-rated show doesn't happen often, but it happened to Donahue. Who knows what will happen to Olbermann?

With Donahue, management cared less about building up audience than tamping down dissent. While independent outlets and blogs were soaring in audience by questioning the rush to war, our bosses imposed straightjackets on us that prevented similar growth.

Digg!

I agree completely that Keith Olbermann's commentaries have been a healthy breath of fresh air in an otherwise putrid broadcast and cable news media. However, it is just a matter of time before he will be silenced. We no longer live in a democratic republic. Our nation is an Oligarchy with a few rich and powerful people calling the shots. General Electric will only take so much of dissent against the right wing minions in power and their radical, destructive agenda. So enjoy Olbermann while you can. It is only a short time before they pull his plug.

The result of this record of right wing bias has made American news obsolete. The only commentator I listen to is Keith Olbermann because he is the only one that is even close to telling the truth about what is and has happened to our wonderful? country.

The result of both houses of Congress, the White House, Supreme Court and ownership of the media is attached to one political party has made this country fascist.

When you have to look to find accurate news not propaganda it is already too late.

Keith Olbermann; finally, an HONEST commentator.

Keith Olbermann speaks the truth. Not just factual truth, but truth as it applies to the human spirit, and with honesty that is critical for a healthy society. We have seen many times before in the 20th Century what happens when the truth is swept under the rug for temporary convenience and comfort – hell, we fought several wars because of it. Ultimately, lies and subterfuge in government never stand; they fester like a boil, grow ever larger, and infect everything they touch until the source of the infection, and much that is healthy around it, is destroyed.

What a sad time it will be for America if Keith is taken off the air; what a sad time it will be for the future of America if honesty is denied for the sake of profit and self-aggrandizing power.

Keith's ratings have been rising. Why? Because he speaks for the real "silent majority" that has been both bamboozled and stifled for five long years – and because honesty, once it is spoken, cannot help but ring true to anyone who is listening.

Being a Canadian and visiting the USA I was amazed at the saturation of propaganda that is called news in american media.
This should be a crime and punishable in the courts, absolutely ridiculous to call it news ,never mind unbiased.
Olberman is the soul TV reporter that is exposing and opposing the totally criminal and illegal BUSHCO regime for what it honestly is,NEO NAZI FASCISM.
I would not be surprised at all if Olberman had a fatal "accident" very soon,he is a bur in the side of the BUSH CRIME CABAL.
American media should be totally ashamed to even call themselves news, very obvious obscene propaganda is what it truly is.

I'm sorry, but despite the fact that Mr. Cohen's probably right, I just don't care for this kind of piece when it's so obviously designed to drum up sales for his book.

Just write the damn op-ed! In the footer you can mention what you do and your new book. If we like you're style and substance, we'll look you up and find it ourselves. Linking to the Amazon listing in the body of the article crosses the line, IMO. This ceases to be content and becomes a wordy advertisement.

He is the only "news" I trust (except for the Daily Show). Even my daily paper is totally biased anymore. I feel so isolated-and angry as Hell.

Keep in mind that the right may have over extended inself. The economy is doing far worse than the flim flam statistics coming out of Washington would indicate. It's the economy stupid! Those getting the short end of the stick have a nasty tendency to turn against the political estabishment. Remember the 60s?

KEITH OLBERMANN NEWs ANALYST

Doesn't that sound better. Stop calling him a liberal ! Four years ago he would have gotten the ax but today most Americans agree with him. His conservative counterparts have declining ratings. I'll bet Olbermann's ratings are very good. He's a breath of fresh air. At some point the climate had to change and that's what's happening. It has nothing to do with 'liberal'. Thanks, ANNA

olbermann's ratings are poor. so he probably will be cancelled. what saves him so far is that he's on msnbc, which trails behind fox so it's not clear who could do better( a reality show with Mark Foley and the Olympic Mens Figure Skating team perhaps?).

Olbermann is not a great reporter. He doesn't break news. His sardonic manner and his voice emphasis does satirize various fools and misdeeds of the day quite well. He was a great sportscaster, and provided some cutting edge humor to a medium like sports where often too much deference is shown to superstars. Olberamann like Stewart shows no deference.

But Keith is not a great journalist, and I would be surprised if he thought of himself as a journalist. These cable commentators both Fox and MSNBC are entertainers. That's what it is. You still have to read a decent newspaper and scan the net for international news to really know what happened. But cable is fun to watch whether it's Olbermann, an idiot like Hannity, the legal wit of Abrams or the irony of Lou Dobbs. But that's entertainment. Low ratings-you go. It's not subscriber-driven.

Still On Air

The Monday after he made his first "rant" I tuned in to see if he was still hosting his show. To my pleasure he was.

Keith is a gem. He must get a ton of heat (heat is NOW measured in tons) for doing news. He whines about doing Tom Cruise stories (but also wallows in them). He does a lot of fluff. He needs three shows. News, fluff and sports.

He has a great wit, seems to know history and is a Beatles fan. He's welcome at my table any night.

BTFW it seems as though Chris Matthews has suddenly developed a spine. Maybe some day he can sit in his chair without the velcro to keep him upright.

I used to watch KO because he is funny, witty, and (okay, I cop to it) attractive.

Now I watch him because he's putting himself out there, on the line, every [week] night. My attention has only increased BECAUSE he is willing to climb the fence, and go over it to the other side. Keith has become FIERCE.

We used to be younger; we used to believe in things, causes, not celebrities, not "causes celebres". What has happened to us? Let's become FIERCE again.

Olbermann as release valve
Posted by: LeftWright on Oct 4, 2006 11:40 PM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
While Mr. Olbermann's rants are fun to watch, what purpose do they serve?

Mr. Olbermann provides a concentrated release valve for the pent up emotions of the Bush critics from the left. To my knowledge he has not broken any stories and stays within the carefully maintained information boundaries of the MSM.

Thus, like Noam Chomsky and others, he acts as a left Gatekeeper validating and limiting the "acceptable" level of dissent.

When he breaks a story about the use of Depleted Uranium or Phosphorus weapons in Iraq, CIA Heroin smuggling in Afghanistan, electoral fraud or calls for a new investigation into any aspect of 9/11, I will reconsider my critique.

While 9/11 was mass murder and a crime against the American people and the rest of the world (war on Islam, Afghanistan, Iraq, etc), it was (and is) a psyops against the American people creating a worldview which allows the plutocracy to keep its deathgrip on the levers of power.

The gatekeepers, left and right, maintain the fictions necessary to keep the status quo in place.

However, if we are able to expose 9/11 and its underlying structure for what it is we can flip the entire global dynamic and change the direction of human history.

March for change on October 5th.

Go to www.worldcantwait.net for details.

The truth shall set us free. Love is the only way forward.

Your fear may be misplaced

I find it ironic that the professional Keith Olbermann is so far removed from the personal one. I wouldn't waste time fearing for him personally or professionally, because he has a long and well-documented history of self-destruction and vicious retribution aimed at people he purports to empathize with.

I know, because I'm one of the people he inexplicably turned on. And, as bizarre as it seems, his decision to completely turn his back on his former best friend was precipitated by what he perceived as unforgivable temerity on my part -- the gall to express components of an ideology he now boldly and eloquently espouses.

Shortly after 9/11, when he and I were still friends, I had the audacity to suggest to him that blowback was a factor in the attacks. He responded by offering to pay my way to New York and have me stand at Ground Zero and then decide if I still felt the same way. Our discussion then degenerated into an argument over whether all organized religion was counterproductive. I took exception to his bashing of mine, arguing that Quakerism had primarily been a force for peace and justice in the world.

He once considered me his best friend, and he wrote prominently about me in his book "The Big Show" (I'm the one who thought Bucky Dent wasn't a home run threat), but now has refused to acknowledge my existence for more than five years. It's deliberate, sadistic and terribly hurtful.

I'm greatly heartened by the work he's doing on MSNBC and hope it continues, but I sadly suspect that if the network doesn't decide to eliminate him, he'll find a way to destroy himself, just as he ultimately always tries to destroy everything -- and everyone -- dear to him.

Great job Keith, your reporting continues to be a breathe of fresh air!

I think Olberman is almost the only true critic of the criminals running the shit house and would have been disappeared as a mouth piece causing trouble by now. I would miss his sharp wit and tenacity,no one else comes close to his clarity.
