Foley, Gays and the Religious Right: Is This the Nail in the GOP Coffin?

By Evan Derkacz, AlterNet. Posted October 3, 2006.

It's become clear that the Republican leadership protected a predator. Will it cost them the conservative Christian votes they so desperately need?

If there's any question as to why former Rep. Mark Foley was able to continue his harassment of teenage congressional pages, look no further than the spin of Bush spokesman Tony Snow: "Look, I hate to tell you but it's not always pretty up there on Capitol Hill, and there have been other scandals, as you know, that have been more than simply, uh, uh, uh, naughty emails."

Those "naughty emails" (and instant messages) included "I would drive a few miles for a hot stud like you," requests for photos, unambiguous advances ("Do I make you a little horny?"), and exchanges like this one (Maf54 is Foley):

Maf54: What ya wearing?

Teen: T-shirt and shorts.

Maf54: Love to slip them off of you.

As egregious as his behavior appears to be, the writer of the above messages isn't the whole story -- he's merely a catalyst. Foley, who resigned on Friday, has checked into alcohol rehab and stated that he was "deeply sorry." He faces an FBI investigation to perhaps, ironically, be convicted under some of the laws he helped to pass.

But the bigger, more institutional question remains: What did the GOP leadership know, and when did they know it? Evidence suggests that Speaker Dennis Hastert and Majority Leader Jim Boehner both knew that there were issues -- though neither, of course, cops to awareness of anything approaching the text above. In fact, evidence suggests that Foley's behavior was well known in GOP circles for years, with former page Matthew Loraditch telling ABC News that pages were warned to "watch out for Foley" as early as 2001.

After initially stating simply that he knew nothing until it was reported in the press, House Speaker Dennis Hastert eventually owned up to the fact that his office was notified of "over-friendly" communications between Foley and a page many months earlier. His office was also notified that the page's family "wanted the contact to stop."

This was roughly a year ago, in the fall of 2005, yet the speaker did nothing. In fact, though he admits he was personally told about this by Rep. Rodney Alexander, he also claims to not "explicitly recall" the conversation. Alexander is the congressman of the page on the other end of Foley's advances.

According to an AP report, "Rep. Thomas Reynolds, who heads the House Republican election effort, said Saturday he told Hastert months ago about concerns that a fellow Republican lawmaker, Rep. Mark Foley, had sent inappropriate messages to a teenage boy."

Then there's Majority Leader Jim Boehner's conversation with Hastert, during which, Boehner says, Hastert claimed that "we're taking care of it." That was this spring. Since then, Hastert has allowed Foley several months of "over-friendly" "contact" with a teenager. In a CNN interview, conservative Bay Buchanan noted that the earliest emails "had predator stamped all over it." And that: "No one in the country can suggest otherwise."

Hastert has consistently followed the Katrina approach to leadership: ignore the warning signs, keep cronies in power and undercut investigations of wrongdoing. Hastert himself is the beneficiary of cronyism -- he was shepherded into the position of leadership by Tom DeLay after Newt Gingrich's resignation and the resignation of the man who was poised to replace Gingrich. A third-stringer, as it were.

According to the Washington Post's Jonathan Weisman, Hastert's office was well known to take a "laissez-faire" approach to ethics issues. Weisman quotes a Republican source, who adds: "They don't respond when things are bending, but they get very excited when they break."

In addition to this slimy sleaze bombshell we have the Woodward revelation that Condi Rice knew about 9/11 being planned two months before it happened and no action was taken to prevent it; an indicator that they wanted their "new pearl harbor" and its dead Americans to happen so that they could invade Iraq, etc. Slimy sleeze plus responsibility for dead Americans is breathing new life into the death of Republican dominion. Impeach them now or impeach them later but do the right thing and impeach them.

The final BOMBSHELL needed to get these losers out of POWER. Everything happens in due time and the time is now for those who have lied, misled, corrupted etc. to be accountable for their actions/behavior. This country is truly on the wrong track and it's time that we ALL wake up and realize this and DEMAND a Change in our systems. It's time for a REVOLUTION. It's time for Change.

since when are pedophiles considered gay? I think perhaps we need a totally separate category of sexual orientation, its insulting to gays to be lumped in with this sort of "sicko" the writer needs to clarify this a bit.

But the issue is not whether the top brass knew about the emails, it's whether anyone can prove they knew about them. There are shades of Nixon here - they just have to deny, deny, deny for five weeks, and hope no one cracks their old email file.

Much as I'd like to see a Democratic victory, if they win now, they'll get two years in office, maybe six, before the Republicans are back with a new crowd. The Dems aren't ready for a long-term victory right now.

Mark Foley, Chairman of Congress Caucus for Missing and EXPLOITED CHILDREN, allowed to resign and check into ALOHOL REHAB. That's IT!! Alcohol made him do it. So we can assume that Alcohol is the root cause that makes men pursue sex with young boys and we must immediately recall all liquor and close all the bars. NOW, before it's too late. I have seen stupid before - but the Republicans are taking STUPID to all time high. Withholding the fact that Foley was soliciting young boys on line with sexually explicit language while letting him make decisions as Chairman for Missing/Exploited Children pretty much defines the Family Value Party (GOP) Gross Old Pedophiles - real concern for child sex abuse, etc. As the young page said himself, "It's sick sick sick sick.........."

There is no excuse for the GOP who knew for defending even the most mild “overly-friendly” email exchanges between Mr. Foley and a White House Page. If it is true they were aware then they need a shovel to dig themselves out of this one because they are in it deep. I say let them roll in it like the pigs they are, but that's just my opinion.

WE still have the power to clean up this mess!

Obviously, the Republicans wanted to hang onto Congressman (now citizen) Foley’s Republican seat to push Mr. Bush’s political agenda through the Congress.

But, the Democrats most likely ALSO knew about Congressman Foley’s pedophilic tendencies, too. And, my guess is they wanted him to stay right there until just before the election so they’d have something to crow about down in his district before his (former) constituents went to the polls to cast their votes. If this isn’t yet another example of the entrenched, systemic, “good ‘ol’ boy” corruption (on BOTH sides of the aisle) in our US Congress, I don’t know what is!

Certainly, every elective legislative body attracts its share of neer-do-wells. But, in a Congress of only 535 legislators, it seems that the crooks and perverts are now making up an ever more disproportionate share of the whole. What’s more, when illegal activities are publicly exposed, it also seems the rest of their “esteemed colleagues” in the Congress now spend FAR too much time “circling the wagons” to PROTECT the rearward facing anatomies of these bums rather than booting each of their sorry rear ends out the door and back to where they came from.

Could it be that EVERYONE’S individual behavior in the US Congress has now become so shameful and corrupt that nobody there dares “rock the boat” by ratting on another “esteemed colleague” for fear of them “ratting” in return?

Fortunately, WE still have the power to clean up this mess. It’s called a write-in. Use it!

It's disturbing when things like this are happening within the Government. With social services being in the hot seat all over the nation, it is issues like this that let others think that they do not have to abide by laws or rules.

Children are left in abuse and are being abused by those who are supposed to protect them, this includes the Gov't.

It's so disturbing. You can't trust anyone anymore.
Hugs, Jen.

Unbelievable

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The icing on the irony cake is that he was chair of the Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus. How could Hastert not have asked him to resign from that when he learned of this stuff? That's more irony than anyone should be asked to stomach.

Interesting that this seems to be making more of a stir than the torture bill (although I can't say for certain, not being in the country). You'd think that, serious as this issue is, wholesale government approval of arbitrary imprisonment, torture, murder, and repudiation of the Geneva Conventions might provoke a little general outrage. I mean, this involves the actions of one man and the connivance of several, and as far as I know no-one's actually died of it yet. But outright governmental sanctioning of the same methods that made Saddam Hussein a hissing byword for evil is fine, apparently. Not a cause for concern. At least according to The Base.

Which yes, does make me wonder where Conservasaurus is, and why he's not claiming this is necessary to stop terrah. Well done to whoever spotted that.

But I do wonder what the outrage meter would have shown if the pages had been teenage girls, instead of boys. Would there have been any outrage at all?

REP. REYNOLDS LOOKED DRUNK AT HIS PRESS CONFERENCE

Did anybody else see Reynold's press conference on C-SPAN last night? Admittedly, I've never watched Tom Reynolds speak before, so maybe it is just how he talks. But I swear he sounded like he had a few martinis before taking the podium to answer questions. Chugging water and slurry, if so, just more stellar behavior from the party of family values.

Who in god's name are these cretins!

Dear Governor Bush,

There is no doubt that there is terrible fallout underway regarding former State Rep. Mark Foley. However, it should be very clear in both a professional and ethical sense that there is absolutely no excuse for any member of Congress to defend Mr. Foleys sending of overly-friendly email. Even to call it such is to overlook and misrepresent the true intentions of Mr. Foley messages.

This is what I find most appalling: White House Press Secretary Tony Snow referred to the sexual and graphic emails sent by former Rep. Mark Foley to several teenage pages as "simply naughty e-mails."

This is a totally callous remark on Mr. Snow’s behalf. Mr. Snow is in essence defending all pedophiles who pray on young children and teenagers by saying such. We deserve a much better explanation and Mr. Foley deserves much more than a slap on the wrist, as Mr. Snow’s “simply naughty” punishment would entail. A more appropriate statement for Mr. Snow to make would be to call this an egregious breech of public trust.

Governor Bush, where you aware of what was happening in your own State Department?

My deepest sympathies,

(I put my name here)

Religious Right reaction

this is from the Family Research Council this morning:

Pro-Homosexual Political Correctness Sowed Seeds for Foley Scandal

Democrats seeking to exploit the resignation of Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL) are right to criticize the slow response of Republican congressional leaders to his communications with male pages. But neither party seems likely to address the real issue, which is the link between homosexuality and child sexual abuse. Foley, an unmarried 52-year-old representative, had always refused to answer questions about his sexual orientation. Now that his emails and messages to teenage male pages have been revealed, it appears clear that Foley is a homosexual with a particular attraction to underage boys. While pro-homosexual activists like to claim that pedophilia is a completely distinct orientation from homosexuality, evidence shows a disproportionate overlap between the two. Although almost all child molesters are male and less than 3% of men are homosexual, about a third of all child sex abuse cases involve men molesting boys--and in one study, 86% of such men identified themselves as homosexual or bisexual. Ignoring this reality got the Catholic Church into trouble over abusive priests, and now it is doing the same to the House GOP leadership. They discounted or downplayed earlier reports concerning Foley's behavior--probably because they did not want to appear "homophobic." The Foley scandal shows what happens when political correctness is put ahead of protecting children.

Look, What happened here is discusting at the least. No matter what else happened Foley never got past "talk"
now he is outed and not in public service anymore.
So my main point is that it seems that we as a country have forgotten. We have active members of congress who have
had ties to a page Still in office?? Ran a Brothel out of his own home. Still in office?? "I didn't inhale" served 8 years.
"We as a country, rep & dem. need to clean our house
every time we identify these problems. they need to be removed, we need to insist that they be removed or next election there will be payback from the voters.
I know rep and dem have their differences but this should be one issue we come together on and stand firm. Zero tolerance from us and any leader in congress
will be too scared to cover for anyone.
