Is Lebanon the 'Trigger' for U.S. War With Iran?

By Larisa Alexandrovna, AlterNet. Posted August 10, 2006.

Connect the dots, and it's clear that Cheney and the neocons are desperate to start a war with Iran.

For over a year now I have been reporting on activities that appear to be leading the United States into direct confrontation with Iran. Aside from Sy Hersh and a few others, the majority of the U.S. media largely has ignored this march toward war, mainly because it helped disseminate the pre-war propaganda prior to the U.S. invasion of Iraq. But failing to connect the dots on Iran is just as bad, if not worse, because Iran is by no means Iraq. A war with Persia will be a catastrophe of unimaginable consequences and the trigger for that action may have already begun.

Several months back, I reported that concern was rapidly rising that the United States was setting the table for its Iran engagement:

Speculation has been growing on a possible air strike against Iran. But with the failure of the Bush administration to present a convincing case to the U.N. Security Council and to secure political backing domestically, some experts say the march toward war with Iran is on pause barring an "immediate need."

An immediate need is also sometimes called "the trigger."

Some background

Military brass and intelligence experts have been watching Iran with concern since 2003, when the entire world was focused on Iraq. Hersh reported for The New Yorker: "Israeli intelligence assets in Iraq were reporting that the insurgents had the support of Iranian intelligence operatives and other foreign fighters, who were crossing the unprotected border between Iran and Iraq at will."

That Iranian intelligence assets are crossing the border into Iraq is of course true, but it is also true that Al Qaeda assets, which had not previously been in Iraq, made their way via Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates. In fact, everyone who wanted to engage Americans simply crossed the border. Instead of containing this situation and securing the country, Hersh reported that the Bush administration chose the photo-op route to war tactics:

"The border stayed open, however. The administration wasn't ignoring the Israeli intelligence about Iran," explained Patrick Clawson, the deputy director of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, who has close ties to the White House. "There's no question that we took no steps last summer to close the border, but our attitude was that it was more useful for Iraqis to have contacts with ordinary Iranians coming across the border, and thousands were coming across every day."

While the administration was busy doing nothing to secure Iraq's borders, I reported in January that they did find the time to propagate a bizarre story of an Iraq-Iran cross-border uranium operation:

The story that was peddled -- which detailed how an Iranian intelligence team infiltrated Iraq prior to the start of the war in March of 2003 and stole enriched uranium to use in their own nuclear weapons program -- was part of an attempt to implicate both countries in a WMD plot. It later emerged that the Iranian exile was trying to collect money for his tales, sources say.

Of course this conspiracy theory presented as credible by its spinners was false. That did not, however, stop Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld from bypassing the intelligence community, which had already debunked this story, and sending an off-book team to investigate.

During that same summer, then Undersecretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz was busy trying to convince the U.S. State Department to allow the use of Mujahedeen-e Khalq (MEK), a terrorist organization on the State Department's terror group list. Wolfowitz wanted to use MEK on the ground in Iran.

The following year, the civilian leadership at the Pentagon came up with a plan for how to use MEK as assets and still not come up against pushback from the State Department -- the members of MEK were simply told to resign from the organization en masse and swear an oath to "democracy." This was clever, to be sure, because even though MEK is listed as a terrorist organization, the DOD could argue that it was not using "that organization."

The allegations are that the DOD briefed no members of Congress on the use of MEK in Iran. In March of 2006, their slaughter of 22 Iranian officials, including a governor, would become news all over the world, except in the United States. But even more serious, some analysts hold the view that it was MEK that was responsible for the Samarra Mosque bombing in Iraq.

I am so thankful to read this - Until now, NOTHING about the Lebanon war added-up. It didn't make any sense!! No matter which way it was approached or attempted to be understood.

Finally, it does. Thank you Larisa.

"Ending the Neocon Nightmare" - Levy

Apart from the total insanity of this particular war, one that seems both murderous and suicidal in some ways for Israel, --- there was always the sense of "something" lurking beneath the surface, a dark shadow in the depths, with only the steely periscopic eye breaking the surface from time to time.

Then a poster in another discussion threw some light on this when he or she wrote: Whose troops will be sent into Lebanon? US and British troops? Will they refuse UN authority and start making incursions into Syria? In that case, Iran will have to respond - and Russia and China are looking over everyone's shoulder... I think Bush is trying as hard as he can to start WWIII at the urging of his neocon freakshow handlers. If that happens, Israel may very well be wiped off the map - we may have nuclear warfare for real this time - and that's why this matters, that's why it can't be ignored.

Then I read Daniel Levy's "Ending the Neocon Nightmare" [Haaretz, a few days ago], which begins, "Witnessing the near-perfect symmetry of Israeli and American policy has been one of the more noteworthy aspects of the latest Lebanon war." He refers to the possibility of "an agenda invented elsewhere", and to the "proxy war" concept.

Most enlightening was his ref to the "clean break" strategy, and the fact that it originated from people in the US such as Perle and Feith.

'The "clean break" was from the prevailing peace process [1996], advocating that Israel pursue a combination of roll-back, destabilization and containment in the region, including striking at Syria and removing Saddam Hussein from power in favor of "Hashemite control in Iraq." '

And then he brings it into the present...

Persians/Iranians are much smarter than Arab Nations

I agree with the author that Bush has been trying to go after Iran for some time now. But have a hard time believing that Israel would dare take any action against the Persians because of potential outcomes. Iran is much larger than Iraq and Israel and sending troops to the ground for a regime change is next to impossible. Furthermore, the Iranian Air-Force and Radar capabilities are far more superior to that of Iraq. While there is no question of America's superiority in the Air, it is unlikely that Iran will sit by and allow an invasion or specific target bombings as did Iraq.

Most importantly, US must be very careful how it engages in any military campaign against Iran purely based on the Persian's alliance to their home land. Although the media paints a religious fundamentalist picture, Persians are not Arabs and do not readily accept Islam as their religion. On the contrary, the pressures of the Islamic republic have forced many Iranians to denounce Islam and instead cling to their native Persian roots. An attack on Iran could unite the currently disenfranchised public against the west, and would certainly result in direct attacks against Israel. It is important to note that if US policy is to engage in regime change, it must stay far away from any military action against Iran; which would certainly result on heavy casualties on both sides, as well as tightening the grip of the Islamic regime against the Persian people. I can only hope that US administration is not so imperialistic and arrogant that it has failed to learn anything from Iraq.

When Israel first bombed Lebanon, I posted on HuffPost and Last chance Democracy Cafe that the Neo-Cons were the driving force behind the attack on Lebanon. I wrote to Helen Thomas (no reply). I wrote to Buzzflash. I wrote to Danny Schechter, who printed my letter on his blog. It all adds up. Re-read the PNAC manifesto. The Neo-Cons are obsessed with controlling the Middle East and its oil. Now that Iraq is a dismal failure, and public opinion is against another war, they have found a way around it, by goading and supporting Israel's aggression. Of course, Israel has its own agenda, but this newest conflagration has been a long time in the making. Wolfowitz and Perle have a long-standing association with Israel. Cheney does all his plotting and planning in the shadows. His thirst for money and power will never be quenched nor denied. Jeb Bush was one of the architects of the PNAC. Big Brother George, if anything, is all about oil and family. Condoleeza Rice is always handy to provide the smoke and mirrors - to appear to be working for peace. But, peace is NOT what the Neo-Cons want. It is control that floats their boat. This is a win-win situation for them. War creates anxiety-thus, the predictions of WWIII. War has proven to work for the right-wing Republicans; and with an election coming up in November, anxiety is just the ticket. The instability in the Middle East drives up gasoline prices, making Big Oil fatter and fatter. All the more to fill those campaign coffers of Republican candidates. In the meantime, the increasing hostilities serve as a smokescreen to distract from the failures in Iraq and leave a door open to bomb Iran. After all, Iran is funding Hezbollah, and if Hezbollah can keep up the fight, Iran will have to be bombed to stop the funding. Only then
can there be peace, or so the theory will go. The argument could be proposed that this is insanity, and bombing Iran will lead to extreme consequences. Thus, the Neo-Cons could not possibly be so deranged. Not so. First of all, they never admit to their mistakes. I doubt that such obsessed men even see them. If they don't admit to mistakes, then they certainly are not going to learn from them. Iraq is just a detour on the road to Empire. Israel is their beast of burden at the moment. Loss of civilian life is an inconvenience to be ignored. Their grand scheme is all that matters. With it comes more money and more power from black gold. They view the world with blinders on; and their excess of hubris keeps them from seeing the pitfalls. The mess in Lebanon has Neo-Con and Bush stink smeared all over it. Bit by bit the pieces of the puzzle will fall into place. Someone somewhere will leak the truth. Those of us who choose not to wear rose-colored glasses or buy snake-oil, saw it first. That is scant consolation for the continuing death and devastation inflicted on the world by men like Cheney and his Neo-Con cabal.

Oh yes, a huge coincidence all this at this time when the party hats of the victorious anti the status quo have not even been put away. Well, who should be surprised? The primaries are here. Lieberman got sent to the minors somewhere. He wants back in or maybe he will 'tell all' re Enron and then won't everybody be surprised! The Republicans are searching for a means of ensuring that Lieberman is mollified and that the Lamonts have no chance of restructuring anything let alone Congress. And lo and behold - CODE RED ALERT is announced. With Tony Blair, who will sit on Bechtel's board of directors after his tenure in the UK ends, providing Bush with his round two of terrorist activities (remember round one - the UK train nonsense ) in order to justifiy the ringing of alarm bells and raising the fear level bar, this is the first signal for the flying of the trial balloons re 'let's march into Iran 'cause it's Manifest Destiny Time.'
OK if EACH AND EVERY MEMBER OF GOVERNMENT WHO HAS A SON AND/OR A DAUGHTER OF MILITARY SERVICE AGE WERE TO SERVE ON THE FRONT LINE AND TO SERVE THERE ASIDE THE SOLDIERS FROM EVERY CORNER OF THE US UNTIL EVERY ONE OF THOSE SOLDIERS COMES HOME.

There are of course many things wrong with this scenario, namely the concept of Manifest Destiny but don't let Paul Wolfowitz hear you say that. Better yet, let Wolfowitz lead the troops in as a front line soldier since he's so hot for this.

So be careful my neighbours of where you are asked to go. You may not come back. Better yet, visit the V hospitals of those who did come back but are out of ordinary life service as a result. Do the research.
May the likes of Lamont be strong at this time. The alarm bells need to be rung but not for the reasons given by Bush. Code Red indeed. Timely indeed, yes? So those who would argue against 911 conspiracy theorists - are they willing to label themselves as coincidence theorists?

That is what the Bushies want: war, more war and still more war. They realize that killing people is necessary to create war and they are quite willing to allow Americans to be killed and to bomb and kill throughout the world because it makes more war. They talked the Israelis into creating the gore in Lebanon as the more gore there is the more likely it will trigger more and more wars. This is all the Bushies are good for is creating more gore and more war. Get these assholes out of power before their insanity engulfs the whole planet.

Israel attacked Hezbollah to prevent retaliation when US (or Israel) attacks Iran this fall.

This is for the safety of the Israel in case of the war between Iran and US (which will definitely come sooner than later).

At the same time, Israel is using this war to capture the sensitive areas of Lebanon that are useful for them. But occupying part of Lebanon, people will forget about the areas still under occupation from the 1982 and they will concentrate on asking Israel to go back to the boarder lines as they were a few weeks ago.

2 problems solved, Israel legalizes the capture of land, will probably take more land from Lebanon, get rid of the majority of the weapons Hezbollah has and will be sitting comfortably looking at the US attacking Iran and American soldiers dying in Iran and Iraq when Iran starts it retaliation in the form of direct and indirect hit at the American troops and American interest in the region.

This is a crusade, this is what Bush said long time ago, and the stupid liberals in the US tried to stop it, because it was not OK to say it.

This is the re-drawing of the maps of ME to get the best out of it for those who will act as puppets of the US and destroy everything for those who dare to stand up against the policy of the empire.

Izrael has been invading Lebanon for years and pushing the limits of it's ethnic cleansing in the OCCUPIED territories. It wants a new "buffer zone" that it can one day populate with Israeli settlements and in order to keep expanding its still internationally undefined borders it will need to remain unapposed by any regional fighting force. Iran is not a threat to Izsrael, in fact, as events are shaping up in accordance with the Izraeli/Neocon Project for A New American Century (PNAC) it looks like the timeline for invading Iran is within Bush's claim that during the next two years, while he is president, is the only best chance their willever be to reshape the Middle East and make it safe for Izrael to dominate the region for decades to come.
There's a little problem though but I doubt that it will stop an ivasion of Iran. There are 700 million Arabs. Izrael will do its best to slaughter as many as it can but it seems that little ragtag political party called Hezbollah won't run away form Izraels fourth strongest military in the world. Damn. And over in Iraq the U.S. army is slughtering Iraqi Arabs at a pretty good clip but they don't seem to want to quit either. The Iranians are sure to not to cut and run so it seems the only way to conquer Iran is going to be through the use of Nuclear weapons, and everyone knows that Bush, the Neocons and the Izraelis are very willing to use them with glee. They Middle East world under domination of the U.S. and the Izraelis is an insane concept but thanks to Bush, who is insane, and to Izrael, a nation that has proven that is afriad peace more than it hates its Arab cousins, it looks like we are headed for catastrophe.

It really bugs me that so many so called Intellectuals in the US these days have become experts of the ME.

This article is a sad example of such.

As an exile Iranian who has been politically active all my adult life, it really gets me mad to read such nonsense as this article.

I have MEK, not because of their actions against IRI, but because it is religious cult who would sell themselves to anyone to gain power. They were the first to support the Ayatollahs of Iran, and it was only when the Ayatollah’s Khomeini categorically denied any contact with them and call them Hypocrites that they changed their view of the Khomeini's regime. Their bloody fight against IRI caused 10s of thousands of innocent people dead and destroyed the last hope for democracy in Iran after the revolution.

But, MEK is not a Al-Qaida like organization, the stupidity of the writer to use fairy tales about their terrorists action in Iraq against IRI operatives and official is far from truth.

I really wish you guys who are talking about such important issue, at least studied the groups you talk about, learn about them before putting them stupidly in their well balanced theories about Iraq/Iran and the rest of the ME.

With progressive like this, no wonder US politics is so dominated by Neoconservatives, at least they know what they are doing, their act and words are Evil but not ignorant as the content of this article.

I have Christian relatives living in Iran, in fact, I was visiting them in Tehran in September 2001 when the World Trade Centre was hit by the planes. I watched that horror unfold on Iranian television.
I also watched thousands of Iranians hold a candle-lit vigil for the victims of the attack. They showed solidarity with the American people. I wonder how many of them will be killed by American bombs in the coming years. None, I hope. But I suppose that's up to the American people, isn't it?

Bombing in October

There have been several reports in the newspapers in Asia saying that the Iran enrichment sites will be bombed in October. The Asian Times ran a report that this is common knowledge amongst the diplomats of certain countries that are friendly to the USA. Another article has stated that the "war" against the 1000 strong Hezbollah fighting force was taking place now to pre-empt Iranian retaliation against Israel through Hezbollah. The bombing campaign was to punish/pressure Lebanon to demonize Iran.

What is interesting is that these articles all set out a timetable that unerringly matches the events in Lebanon. According to this timetable a full cease-fire will not be in place before the last week in August, and a "withdrawal" will take place throughout Sept. In the meantime the Christian militants who control the US Admin will trumpet the need to take action against Iran, and then bomb them just in time for the US elections so that they can project themselves as war time politicians...

From Wayne Madsen Report

Aug. 9, 2006 -- A U.S. Navy sailor is reportedly under investigation by Navy authorities with spying for Israel and desertion. On July 29/30, WMR reported on the largely forgotten last Israeli spy in the military, Lt. Col. Jeremiah Matysse, an intelligence officer in Texas who deserted to Israel but was returned to the U.S. in 2000.

Navy Fire Control Technician Petty Officer Third Class Ariel J. Weinmann, who served on board the USS Albuquerque (SSN-706), a Los Angeles-class nuclear attack submarine, was detained by federal authorities at Dallas-Fort Worth airport after returning from Mexico City. Weinmann was listed as a deserter in July 2005. He is now being held in the Norfolk Naval Station brig. Navy authorities have been reluctant to release the name of the country involved in the espionage case. The Middle East newspaper Al Watan, is reporting that the country in question is Israel. The Jerusalem Post is referring to the Al Watan story in today's edition. The Norfolk media is suggesting a Russian connection to the case. However, as noted in this editor's book, "Jaded Tasks," there are strong connections between Israeli intelligence and the global Russian-Ukrainian Mafia.

Weinmann allegedly met his intelligence handlers and passed them classified information in three locations: Manama, Bahrain; Vienna, Austria; and Mexico City. Because of his rating, Weinmann would have had access to classified information on the Tomahawk cruise missile system. Weinmann enlisted in the Navy in July 2003. The classified data was contained on a Navy laptop computer that Weinmann took with him when he deserted.

Israel's intelligence interest in the Tomahawk is significant. Currently, the Israeli Navy has three German-built Dolphin class diesel electric submarines that are Popeye Turbo cruise missile capable. Israel's submarine deployment strategy is to keep one submarine on standby in Haifa (now likely deployed due to Hezbollah rocket attacks), one in the Red Sea and supported out of an Israeli support base in the Dahlak Archipelago in Eritrea, and one in the Persian Gulf that is on standby for an attack on Iran.

The USA may be the world's "only remaining superpower" but the wars its asshole leadership precipitate are wars we must fight with both hands tied behind our backs. We can't use our arsenals in these guerilla conflicts and we don't know how else to wage wars. Our troops, thus, are foredoomed. What this country needs is a massive purging of its current so-called leaders by any means necessary. When they're gone perhaps their replacements, with some prodding from most of us, will get this country back on some kind of viable track.

Anyone who is up on world events, and i DONT mean watching mainstream news, would know that the present events are a precursor to invading Syria, and finally Iran.

Iraq had the audacity to change to selling oil in euros, and GUESS WHAT? BushSatan and co, trumped up a bunch of lies and unilaterally (britain doesnt count) invaded to create a "Corporate Colony" soas to control Iraq completely. Indeed this is the ONLY reason we are still there, to maintain control of the govt and all resources. Take a look at Paul Bremer's 100 Orders, and you will easily see their true plan.

Fast forward to 2005/2006. Iran states they want to create an oil bourse that does NOT trade in US dollars. As we all know, the US dollar is WAY overvalued(estimates are at least 40%), only because other govts have to stock pile billions to hold for the trade of oil. If govt's start trading oil in any other currency, greenbacks will be dumped and the value of the dollar will plummet. Actually THIS IS A GOOD THING, as it will spur foreign investment, and enhance our exports dramatically, thus lowering our trade deficit. Unforunately, because we are SO over extended, it very well will also mean hyperinflation, and the train wreck it causes.

BushSatan and co, do NOT believe Iran is on the verge of making nuclear weapons. It is a pretext for invasion so as to turn Iran also into a Corporate Colony, and continue the support of US dollar as the primary world-wide base for oil. Indeed our economy is on a knife edge, which will inevitably fall regardless of what wars BushSatan and co start.

YES ISRAEL'S INVASION OF LEBANON HAS BEEN PLANNED FOR YEARS

YES THE INVASION SUPPORTS BUSHSATAN AND CO'S IMPERIAL DESIGNS THROUGHOUT THE REGION.

NO, NONE OF THE PRESENT MIDDLE EAST ACTIVITIES HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH MAKING THE WORLD (or the US for that matter) SAFER.

The information has been plainly presented for years, so anyone who doesnt believe it by now is a dumbfuck. Bush, now a lame duck president, has nothing to lose, so is pushing FULL BORE towards establishing the framework for the NEW WORLD FASCIST ORDER.

If a Democrat wins in '08, they will be hamstrung by the massive amounts of corruption and misguided management and policies of this administration FOR YEARS. Indeed repairing foreign relations will probably take DECADES.

Lets just be glad there are those countries, such as Iran, Cuba, Venezuala, Bolivia, Russia who are telling the US to fuckoff. Hopefully others will make the break soon, and US fascist imperialism will somehow be held in check. If we are really lucky, the entire world will stop trading oil in dollars, and we can just get the US (and world wide) depression started. And just maybe, someday, economic imperialism will be a thing of the past.

Dorogaya Larisa Alexandrovna,

Once again you make an excellent point: there is nothing the Bush Junta would like more now than to distract the world (and particularly the U.S. voting public) with something so completely outrageous that they could use it as a cover to steal this coming election.

I would expect the announcement from Snowjob that Ahmadinejad's got a "Nu-Q-Lar" shoe-bomb and is about to fly a plane into the Biggest Ball of String in the World any day now.

Immediately after that Vice President Wicked Witch of the West and his Treasonous Flying Monkey, Squinty McLuddite, will finally be able to announce to the rest of us their little scenario to seriously launch World War III! No kidding around this time!

And just think how Halliburton and ExxonMobil profits will grow then!

This is typical of the unilateral wet dream of the American neocons; the international oil cartel may not agree with this, however. There are various centers of power in the US government; it is very reminiscent of the struggle for supremacy within Hitler's Third Rech or the USSR Communist Central Committee - who gets to rule the roost?

Analysts have stated that in the event of a war, Iran would shut down oil production across the Middle East, driving prices to unheard of levels. The neocons don't care about this, but Russia, China, India and Europe may think otherwise. Hopefully those countries will stick a fork in the wheels of the neocons whacko plans, and hopefully US citizens can also help put a stop to this insanity.

The Israeli leaders appear to have gone quite mad; I was just listening to one US ambassador deny that they have nukes, or that they used cluster bombs. The central PR message Israeli leaders are parroting is the 'we are innocent victims' line - do they really expect anyone to believe that? It's clear that they planned this war months in advance, and the US also knew about it. So, this is the backdoor approach to larger MidEast war, more dead US soldiers and local civilians. The Bloodthirsty Bushies are at it again.

I have the bad feeling that the Anglo, American, Zionist axis drive for war is to far along to derail. Like in WWII an alliance of allied forces lead by Russia, China and possibly France will have to respond with a nuclear attack on US, London and Israel.

Iran War Is For ISRAEL

Somehow this writer assumes that war on Iran Serves U.S. interests. Yet no explanation is given. At the same time we all know that Iran's nuclear program is seen by Israelis as a threat to Israel's nuclear blackmail of the middle east. Who really has an interest in war on Iran?

Are we completely out of it? Cheney(former director of the Jewish National Security Association) backs war on Iran because Israel's nuclear blackmail of the region must be maintained for zionist expansion to suceed. There is no U.S. interest served by war on Iran. Only Israeli hegemony.

Here is how the jewish press reports it:

Lobbying on Iran, groups strive
to play down the Jewish angle
By Chanan Tigay
May 9, 2006

NEW YORK, May 10 (JTA) — With concern mounting over Iran’s atomic ambitions, the American Jewish community is lobbying intensively to ensure that the threat is taken seriously by the United States, the media and the world.
Careful to avoid giving the impression that it’s primarily an issue of Jewish or Israeli concern, however, U.S. Jewish groups are taking pains to highlight the greater regional and global threats posed by a nuclear Iran and its Holocaust-denying president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

“We have to mobilize public opinion in this country and around the word to understand the serious threat that this represents,” Malcolm Hoenlein, executive vice chairman of the Conference of President...

Administration may be more desperate than strategic

It is certainly possible that the tragic suffering of civilians in Lebanon and Israel is collateral damage in a Bush Administration strategy that has as its real goal regime change in Syria and Iran. There is persuasive evidence that powerful neocons have such an agenda.

However, I wonder whether the real driving force is recognition that the Administration's Iraq project is on the verge of total collapse. Perhaps, like their predecessors in the Nixon Administration, they cling to an illusion that the solution lies accross borders in neighboring countries, Syria and Iran playing the role of Laos and Cambodia.

Undeniably, Iran has been the only "winner" from US invasion and occupation of Iraq, and through its allies (agents?) like Chalabi may have engineered this result.

It Iraq does fracture, the Shiite section is likely to be more subject to Iranian influence than a united country.

Are the hyped confrontation over Iran's future nuclear capability, and US support for Israel's war with Hezbollah, at root attempts to find a politically palatable justification to attack Iran in the vain hope of avoiding a complete debacle in Iraq?

Old Feud Over Lebanese River Takes New Turn

Israel's airstrikes on canals renew enduring suspicions that it covets water from the Litani. The Jewish state denies having any such designs.
By Kim Murphy
Times Staff Writer

August 10, 2006

QASMIYA, Lebanon — Israeli bombing has knocked out irrigation canals supplying Litani River water to more than 10,000 acres of farmland and 23 villages in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley, prompting accusations here that Israel is using its war against Hezbollah to lay claim to Lebanon's prime watersheds.
A report on Debka File, a website often described as reflecting the thinking of Israeli intelligence, described "Israel's recovery of control over its main sources of water" at Wazzani as "the most important gain from the crisis" in Lebanon.

"Israel will not cede this asset in a hurry," the website predicted.

CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE!!

The answer to any further reckless American aggression overseas (or at home, for that matter) has got to start with each and every one of us. I call for universal civil disobedience -- a general strike -- in the event of any new neo-con war. If we stay home, don't buy consumer products (vote with your pocketbook, just buy food and necessities), refuse to file our taxes, there are MILLIONS of us who can bring this corrupt regime down. We can do it, people! Just like the Poles, the East Germans, etc. wake up -- Regime change begins AT HOME!

Potential Fallout From Striking Iran

Assuming the war in Lebanon, viscous as it is, is simply the “trigger” to a joint Israel-US preemptive bombing strike against Iran, Iran has promised to retaliate “100 times” over. Is that threat a bluff? If not, what does it mean?

The conventional wisdom is that Iran cannot be permitted to obtain a nuclear weapon; we would bomb it if it refuses to suspend enrichment and any UN sanctions fail. But what if Israel decides to bomb it soon to save face from a stalemate in the ground war and/or to insure Iran does not re-supply rockets? Bombing would not bring the desired regime change but Israel might consider temporary damage to Iran’s nuclear facilities and infrastructure the next best thing. After all, Iran can hardly make atomic bombs or manufacture rockets if it has no electricity.

An Israel air strike might also be appealing to the Bush administration because it would provide an excuse for the US to go to war against Iran on an "emergency" basis -- thereby bypassing the constitutional and legislative need to obtain Congressional consent to another Middle East adventure. Such an “emergency” might be, for example, Iran’s threat to cut off oil shipments to the US.

When Iran said it would retaliate "100 times" any preemptive strike by Israel or the US, most take that to mean oil prices over $100 per barrel and more acts of terrorism here and abroad. But that limited interpretation may be a gross understatement. Let’s connect the dots: North Korea has atomic bombs. Iran has oil money. Bush has called both the axis of evil and threatened preemptive strikes against them. Isn’t it more likely than not that Iran has already purchased atomic bombs from North Korea? Isn’t it probable that the “evil” leaders of those countries have been aggressively implementing their own revenge strategy rather than passively waiting for Bush to strike?

Suppose further that Iran has shipped the bombs to major ports and stored them in US cities, where they are awaiting remote detonation.
Would shipment be easy? The FBI has stated, “The intelligence that we have certainly points to the ports as a key vulnerability of the United States and of a key interest to certain terrorist groups.” As if to prove that point, in 2002 and 2003, ABC News shipped shielded 15-pound cylinders of depleted uranium into U.S. ports in standard containers; the Department of Customs and Border Protection (“CBP”) did not detect these shipments.

The prospect of atomic bombs detonated in US ports or cities is a doomsday scenario. Loss of world trade would only be the beginning of the cost. We must also count loss of life, radiation poisoning, and the disruption of interrelated telephone, electricity and internet lines; then we must add in the crash of the dollar and the US stock market. Parts of the US would resemble Lebanon and Iraq. Even a 1% chance that Iran has sent atomic bombs to this country should be enough for Bush to insist Israel not bomb Iran.

If the Bush administration implicitly allows Israel to bomb Iran, the Congress and American public will have had no opportunity to weigh the enormous potential sacrifices the country is risking on Israel's behalf. That’s an impeachable offense. But since Bush really sees the problem as one of good v. evil, in his eyes the end could justify the means.

I don’t know if Iran is bluffing. But if I hear on TV that Israel is threatening to bomb Iran, I’m going to cut and run. Bermuda or Minorka sound nice.

Like most others, I have paid some attention to the US policies in the ME, and I'm not so sure it's that easy to predict a US strike on or invasion of Iran in the next year or two, much less in the next month or two.

The very day 9/11/01, I felt sure that in the coming years Iraq would be invaded, and a long-term military infrastructure would then be developed. I painfully watched as news outlets steadily accustomed the audience to this idea, using whatever line of reasoning available at the time to give the notion appropriate traction.

I think the current mode is military and political consolidation, with the long-term goal of a permanent US presence in the ME, and eventual dominance. In the short term, I would expect to see fierce efforts used to justify permanent troop deployments for the ongoing "war on terror." Only after the majority of the electorate is soundly convinced of this perceived necessity can plans for a larger US-led ME war proceed. In this framework, I don't think that the Iran question is the biggest issue; more important is how the larger powers in Asia are likely to regard US policy in the ME over the long term.

to put things into perspective, i shall first remain you that America is not the holly Land and America is on the new world, America is the land of innovation creation discoveries the land of those that had nothing and came here to do something.
the main difficulties the nation faces today is the mix up ideas between America and Israel, Israel is not America neither America is Israel. the American dream is not base on building holly walls and reaching holly lands. it is build on nothing and out of that emptiness something is created. it is the land of those that came here to build something not to be reborn on the holly scriptures of some Abraham. Abraham does not exist in America neither moses.
this government has turn the essences and the purpose of the nation into a tool to his own desires. confusing the nation, creating havoc worldwide, manipulation the land of the free into a land of prisoners a sort of modern day soviet empire.
were everyone is suspicious of everyone, a voice of discontent is unpatriotic, the press is no longer the press but a tool to manipulate and direct the minds of the citizens.
take America back. bring everyone home to his family have Americans live for America not for crazy holly walls and dubious WMD and unfounded terrorism.

Until core deceptions are defeated humanity will remain doomed

Following is a missive circulating the blogospere:

At the core of the deceptions used to manipulate humanity is the concept of religion. Without it, Bush, the Neo-Cons, and their cohorts could never have gained and retained political power by manipulating an already deluded and susceptible constituency. Likewise, their thinly veiled partners in crime, Bin Laden and his ilk, could never have succeeded in their roles in this centuries-old Vatican-led grand deception.

We are all stuck in a web of interlocking deception formed by money, religion, and politics. The great evils that bedevil us all will never cease until humanity finally awakens, shakes off these strong delusions, and forges a new path to the future.

Understanding the Fatal Flaws in Judeo-Christian-Islamic Prophecy

As certain world leaders strive to instigate a fabricated "battle of Armageddon," it is vital to understand and spread the truth about these ancient texts to help bring about an end to such abominable evil.

You can never expect philosophies based on lies and great error to lead to peace and harmony. How many more millennia of terrible proof is necessary before humanity finally gets a clue that most have been utterly deceived by the very concept of religion.
