The Media Is Helping Bush Scare the Populace

By Will Bunch, Attytood. Posted July 17, 2006.

A plea to newsmakers: Stop falling for the Bush administration's attempts at fear-mongering rather than governing.

What I'm saying is that there has been fear-mongering, the likes of which we have not seen in a long time in this country. It happened early in the cold war. We got accustomed to it, we learned to live with it, we learned to understand what it was about and get in proportion. We haven't done that yet with terrorism.

And this administration is really capitalizing on it and using it for its political advantage. No question, the academic testing shows, the empirical evidence shows, that when people are frightened, they tend to go to these authority figures, they tend to become more conservative. So it's paid off for them politically to do this. -- John Dean, author of "Conservatives Without Conscience," on MSNBC's "Countdown with Keith Olbermann," July 10, 2006.

On Monday morning, the 11th of July, an historic townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side exploded in a spectacular fireball. It turned out that the cause was natural gas -- the doctor who owned the building was apparently trying to kill himself. But that's not what many New Yorkers thought at first. They were convinced it was terrorism.

One of them was CNN's famed evening talker Larry King, who was staying nearby and was thus one of the first journalists of any kind to arrive at the flaming rubble. That morning he said:

And I heard the loudest sound I've ever heard in my life, an incredible boom, obviously an explosion, I thought it was a bomb. First thing you think of is 9/11 naturally.

Naturally, the first thing that Larry King thought of was 9/11.

After all, he watches CNN.

So do we. And while we couldn't agree more with John Dean, that the climate of overhyped fear-mongering begins at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, there's also more to the equation than just the actions of the Bush administration. Anyone who watches TV news or reads a newspaper -- and who's seen street thugs elevated into global terrorists, or Internet chatter become an "intricate plot" -- knows what we're taking about.

And here's the thing, no matter what we do or say, the current crew in the White House will be whipping up these "terror threats," to paper over mistakes or to justify new military adventures, between now and January 2009. We can't stop them from throwing it out there.

But the media and its role as a super-enabler -- that's a different story. In theory, a news outlet would act as a filter, determining what terrorism stories are important and which ones carry the strong whiff of baloney. Instead, since Sept. 11, 2001, the media has become a giant amplifier, not a filter. When the subject is "the war on terror," no development is too small for wall-to-wall "breaking news" coverage, or a front-page scoop.

In the initial months after 9/11, that made sense. Over time, however, news directors and editors received plenty of evidence that not everything in what was unanimously called "the war on terror" was what it was cracked up to be.

As a reporter for the Philadelphia Daily News, I learned that lesson early -- and painfully. I wrote a front-page article on Sept. 19, 2001, with the screaming headline: DOCTOR; TERRORIST?; FBI SUSPECTS A YOUNG, WELL-LIKED RADIOLOGIST IN TEXAS. Residents were stunned that a mild-mannered doctor had been plucked from their suburban community -- and in hindsight they should have been. As Human Rights Watch later reported:

A medical doctor doing his residency in San Antonio, Texas, [Albader] al-Hazmi had no previous criminal record or interaction with the FBI. The government based its arrest of al-Hazmi on the fact that he shared the last name of one of the hijackers and had been in phone contact with someone at the Saudi Arabian Embassy with the last name "bin Laden" (which is a common Arabic name). After the government arrested al-Hazmi, agents searched his house for twelve hours, turning his house "upside down," with little regard for his wife and young children. He was detained for two weeks in jails in Texas and New York before being released. He never testified before a grand jury or court.

Digg!

The Media Is Part Of The Problem

A little note to CNN: Never, EVER set Larry King loose on the public as an on-the-scene reporter again. It's just not a good idea, OK? He does a fairly good interview, but he's not a reporter. I hope we've learned our little lesson here.

When the dust is finally settled and historians are able to objectively (When was the last time you heard THAT word?) the media will no doubt be complicit in the failings of America. But, let's not forget something crucial: They are feeding the public what the public desperately wants, what it desperately needs. Would FOX News be as successful as it is without a deplorably dumbed-down American electorate? Think about that for a minute. Would the Rupert Murdoch gang even have stood a chance in the era of Edward R. Murrow, Walter Cronkite and Eric Severeid? I think that very few people outside of Crawford, Texas would have evn taken them seriously.

I suppose this is what we have to live with for the time being. Is this horrible state of affairs with respect to the way Americans receive their infomation as to affairs of state a permanent thing? Time will tell. They say that the pendelum aleays swings back the other way so there's a little room for optimism but I'm not one hundred percent sure. Time will tell

Pray for peace.

The psychology of manipulation
The media, has been helping this administration to spread fear into the mind of Americans since the day they came into power in January 2001, long before 9/11.

I would really recommend the book "No Questions Asked by Lisa Finnegan" http://www.noquestionsasked.org that will be published in December this year to have a good understanding on how the administration spread their lies and the main stream media helped them all the way, some with their silence, and some with their first page headlines.

I bought the book almost 1,5 years ago in PDF format (she does not sell it in PDF any more) and learned a lot from it, specially the chapter 1 ( A Patriotic Press ) and chapter 3 (Obedient Press).

Network News is Now Only Entertainment

Network news is now, in my view, and oxymoron. It has become Network entertainment where ratings have trumped news integrity or content. The government simply took the principles established by Goebbel's in Third Reich Germany. Pander to the fear of people. Keep them convinced they have to be worried of an attack, make them feel superior to those who threaten attack, give them an outlet for prevention of attack (foreing war) and continue to project that "strong father" will protect them if they only listen and obey. Marketing has already perfected these techniques in this society; pharmaceuticals (fear of illness, death), beauty products (fear of aging, loss of attraction), cars (fear I do not have enough personal power/worth), etc. Fortunately there is the Internet where reals news can be obtained, when you know where to look, and the truth is being told. My belief is people who are not afraid know the truth when they read or hear it. It makes sense. What is on Network new does not.

Elsewhere, we learn that Katie Couric, CBS's new "anchor," has been holding meetings with the "little people" of America that are barred to the rest of the media. When she finishes, one presumes, she will know better what they want to hear and deliver it. As for Dan Rather, she would prefer not to comment on his tenure, since she doesn't know the man. But imagine for a moment that Rather or Charles Gibson or whatever empty suit they have over at NBC did such a thing. The others would be screaming that they were focus-grouping the news. When I read about these sessions, my first reaction was that she has taken a page from our Decider-in-Chief, who famously is not influenced by what he reads in the newspapers. As for me, I'll be watching the BBC, where you can actually find some US news.

The idea of a free press seems long gone

The so-called "mainstream media" is no longer a free press. They get told what to say- and what not to say. I had suspected this was the case with Chris Matthews, who seemed to stay pretty balanced, then suddenly took a tack to the hard right. When I saw his name (and several other journalists- Robert Novak for one) on the Bohemian Grove guest list from a year or two ago, it all made sense. We know where their loyalties really lie, and its not with the American people.

Historical scaring of popolace creates facism
Posted by: Dan Bostdorf on Jul 17, 2006 4:58 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I am reminded of the era we live in from the previous "world war" conducted in the 1940's.

Below are memorable quotes that are lessons of history to often forgotten.

"Terrorism is the best political weapon for nothing drives people harder than a fear of sudden death". - Adolph Hitler

"Why of course the people don't want war ... But after all it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship ... Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country." - Hermann Goering, Nazi leader.

"The easiest way to gain control of a population is to carry out acts of terror. [The public] will clamor for such laws if their personal security is threatened". - Josef Stalin

Need I say anymore.

Sound and feel familiar today?
regards
Dan Bostdorf

Who would benefit most from a terrorist strike?
Posted by: ssegallmd on Jul 17, 2006 5:10 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
OK, this wasn't a terrorist strike at all. But even if it were, are Muslim extremists the most likely suspects. Who else had means, motive and opportunity (hint: the Muslims' means and opportunity is dramatically limited by comparison).

Why would terrorists strike the U.S. now? If there ever really were any foreign terrorists, they've already won. The country is in chaos. If they hate freedom, they must be tickled at their stunning success at reducing it here. Land of the free my pitoot! Not any more.

What would the radical Muslims gain from taking such a risk anyway? We're already on the verge of imploding into civil war. Since Americans are already in a state of panic much of the time anyway, what more could terrorists accomplish other than eliminating specific targets, and how would that help them? Americans couldn't be more terrified. Home of the brave? Puh-leeze!

The government and the media, assuming that they haven't been in on it from the beginning, have assumed the role of terrorizing the American people. In the land that truth forgot where nothing is believable, everything is possible.

So, when a building explodes in NYC, some may suspect violent Muslim fundamentalists named Habib and shout, "Look out! Terrorists!". Me, I worry more about Christian fundamentalists with names like George and think, "Oh no! Neocons!"

The only thing we have to fear is the Bushies themselves and the bought lackies who spin the news to fit into the Bushie fearmongering. They push fake fear to make invisible the real fear which is global environmental degredation which the Bushies are pushing instead of fixing. The solution is to can the Bushies and solve the real environmental problems.

Media Confusion
Posted by: Australia on Jul 17, 2006 6:27 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Hi all,

Without bothering to be too specific I would have to say that this is too true.
The one incredible fundamental mistake that disappointed me terribly was from the very first time the administration first spawned the phrase "War on Terror", was that the mainstream press picked this up and ran with it; no question, no analysis... just ran with it.
To me it has always been that Terror is a form of sad desperate twisted warfare used by those least fortunate/empowered to negotiate what is in their best interests or fair. Yet still just a form of warfare nonetheless.
Can you have war on this?
Can you fight a war against a tactic?
Can you have a war on Warfare?
The theory is just, in a way... in its pure form,
But does this make sense...?
To endlessly propagate this misinformation.
Wake up news channels, you bought the silver bullet and put it to your heads in my eyes, George Orwells 1984 and the "Hate Speak" that the populace would stop for several times a day. HYPE! and fear.
Sad to see it go this way, more should be done by the press to examine the causes, not just focus on the end result.
The illusion of a WAR ON TERROR has served no end of assistance to those who benefit from this war...namely the American public (sorry guys but its true, maybe all nations benefit from the stabilisation of the oil resource) but perhaps that's why people bought the ideology.
Or more so why the networks and their big business owners allowed it to continue.
We all need oil and lot's of it, we're all hooked don't deny it we are all addicts... the price of energy without it would be frightening.
To end I would like to say that there will be no accountability for your government... time will tell this.

Do something nice for someone not of your creed, show tolerance.

Peace

Blame ourselves

The media is not out to help the White House (not in general, anyway). They're only out for themselves. Treating a building explosion in NYC like an act of terrorism will serve their goal of getting more viewers. That very same day, there was a similar explosion in a small town in northern Wisconsin - one where more people were injured and two were killed. I didn't see that reported on cable news. The news - cable news in particular is only concerned with their bottom line. This started when Reagan changed the Fairness Doctrine. It escalated when OJ and AC hit the road in the white bronco. Things haven't been the same since.

The media will do whatever we tell them to do. If people clamor for the unveiling of bullshit, then that's what they'll give us. Unfortunately, the populus has clearly made its preference known - sensationalism and scary threats. Until we somehow get people to yearn for truth in broadcasting, things will not change. I don't know how we do that. Turn more people onto the Daily Show and Countdown? Those are the only two programs I've seen that are willing to question the stories off the newswires. Anyone else have any ideas? 'Cause I certainly haven't offered up very much.

NPR? This outfit is part and parcel of the "state of fear" nation Bush and Company have created. Try talking to their "ombundsman" about NPR's role in the echo chamber; just don't expect to ever get a reply other than a pre-written statement thanking you for getting in touch. Just like your Congressional representatives.

On NPR's show about the media they read a letter from a listener who wondered why Dvorkian spent so much time discussing farts and the non-existant Easter Bunny. They were never responsive when I commented that it was easier to talk about things like the above than to deal with the blood on NPR's hands when they helped to create the Liberal hawk.

And on the current crisis in the mid-East, NPR's bias shows through in almost every report. I have yet to hear where Israel gets its weapons though every report mentions Syria and Iran as supplying the weapons used by Hamas and Hezbolla. There are never discussions about collective punishment or the purposeful destruction of civilian infrastructure.

I guess when the sun sinks in the East you all will examine the darling of the Liberals - NPR!

Honest to God, you never heard rants like the ones you hear from grannies in their 70s who watch too much Pat Robertson and mid-day "news" programs.

Granny gets all scared, goes to pawing her son's sleeve about "i heard Pat Robertson say they were putting bombs in grocery baskets disguised as Campbell soup, oh Lord Jesus, Bush better DO something!

And Son doesn't want to upset Grandma, who will after all call him a communist sympathizer, so he listens and a little nodule of fear is placed in his brain, too.

And Grandma never lets up. If she's not saying Pray to Jesus she's saying The Terrists The Terrists.

There's all these little propaganda moles in American households (and I work with the senior population, and see how many of them are propped up in front of CBN or FOX all day long.

There's the NASCAR Dads, the Soccer Moms, and the TV-addled Seniors.

Interesting. The top three Shoutwire stories today reflect this topic. Item three is about how television brainwashes. Items 1&2 focus on the inevitable: paranoia, fear, and disequilibrium, lead to social isolation.

1. Americans Becoming Isolated From Reality

2. Social Isolation Growing In America

3. Brainwashing - How TV Influences Actions

As Orwell wrote:

"All the beliefs, habits, tastes, emotions, mental attitudes that characterize our time are really designed to...prevent the true nature of present-day society from being perceived. If the 'High' are to keep their places permanently, then the prevailing mental condition must be controlled insanity."

where does terrorism rate against domestic homcide in every city, every day in this country?

where does it rate against automobile fatalities every day on our roads?

where does it rate against all the deaths every year in every city caused by inaccessible competent health care?

unfortunately, you're right about the fear-mongering, but the lion's share of mindless support for this administration comes from people who voluntarily attend churches that keep people in their pews through precisely the same technique; fear-mongering, distortion of the "enemy", and self-righteous disregard for empathy, understanding and knowledge.

Another Kind of Terror

I have never had much fear of a person having some sort of Arab religious fit and killing me or my family. The odds are that that will never be a personal issue with me. But is scares me badly when we have doctors having fits of depression and blowing themselves up along with the building in which they live without regard to the safety of others.
What in the world has gone wrong when we have citizens willing to kill others just because some bimbo dumped them? Couldn't the good doctor have found one or more other, better females to sooth his lusts? If the woman really got the better of him in their relationship what the heck was wrong with admitting that he had lost this battle of romance and simply moved on to more? Frankly a good brothel might be a great way to handle a failed love affair but blowing oneself and one's neighbors up with a gas explosion is just not something that members of a sane society would consider. There is a deadly serious issue when people put the lives and property of others on a balance scale and somehow compare that weight to a slap to their emotions. Where were this doctor's morals and values?

The media was never intended to be a transcription service. This happened in Nazi Germany, in Fascist Italy, and during Communism as well to some degree. One would think that at some point, the media would question the truthhood of the "leaders", given how poorly everything's gone, but such seems not to have happened. I don't know why people just won't think for themselves. Obviously this is symptomatic of an apathetic, appeasing Democratic party which also made all of this encroaching Orwellianism more widespread. The media are just following their lead. I don't know if the media realize just how much power they could wield if they were truly independent. Right now, they might think they have power, but they're only powerful insofar as they carry the administration's water. They're the regime's useful idiots. If the media reported rather than transcribed, it would be obvious what fascists these guys all are.

I am a High School GOvernment teacher. I used a similar line in class:
"Then came the color-coded terror alert levels -- the ultimate "dog that did not bark." There has never been an orange-level alert since Bush was successfully re-elected in November 2004 -- not one. "
and I was taken to task by one of my students. Turns out that after the London Subway bombings the DHS reluctantly announced a "limited" orange alert for subway systems
