The Washington Post reports that an official from the Department of the Interior is the latest figure to be charged in the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal. Roger Stillwell, an official in the Insular Affairs Office (sic!) has been charged with filing a false financial disclosure report in which he failed to report various goodies that the Republican super-lobbyist Abramoff had steered his way.
According to Paul Kiel of TPMmuckracker, these charges are big news because Stillwell is the first member of the Department of the Interior to be charged.
Kiel explains, "Despite the fact that the Interior was Abramoff's playground, federal prosecutors working the Abramoff case hadn't taken down a single Interior official to date."
