Now that anti-abortion "Choose Life" license plates are legal in some states, I wonder where's the "Choose Choice" option?

On Monday, June 26, the Supreme Court refused to tackle a lawsuit about the matter, ensuring that the "Choose Life" plates -- which originated In Florida -- remain legal in Louisiana, Tennessee and the few other states where they have grown in popularity.

Proceeds from the plates have raised about $4 million for anti-abortion organizations. And according to the Center for Reproductive Rights, if an organization so much as lists abortion as a post-pregnancy option, they won't receive any proceeds.

Despite strong interest, pro-choice license plates only exist in Montana (and as a decal in Hawaii). If you Google "anti-abortion license plates," all sorts of articles pop up about how they are legal in 13 states -- there's even ordering information. But searching for "pro-choice license plates," you get a smattering of the same stories about anti-abortion plates, a few articles about design contests for a pro-choice plate and a few articles about how states like Tennessee allow anti-abortion plates but refuse to authorize pro-choice ones.

According to a Law.com article, Sen. Gloria Butler, D-Ga., sponsored an amendment for a "pro-family, pro-choice" license plate in the Georgia Senate, but dropped it when Republican senators proposed an alternate amendment that would channel funds from the pro-choice license plate to adoption agencies instead of Planned Parenthood, as Butler wanted. In fact, those same senators specifically prevented any group that provided abortions from receiving any license plate revenue. Apparently they missed the point that a license plate for choice should aid organizations that actually advocate choice.

Republican South Carolina Sen. Mike Fair came up with what he evidently saw as a solution to the debate. In 2005 he introduced a bill to the South Carolina general assembly that would allow for a "Choose Death" license plate. (Yes, he was serious). Of course, the proceeds wouldn't go to nonprofit organizations advocating abortion as an option -- the funds would go to the Department of Mental Health, where they would be "used for post-abortion trauma counseling for females who have chosen to have abortions."

As if the modern pro-choice movement isn't being shafted enough, the anti-choice license plate depicts two crayon-doodled happy children as artwork. Why do anti-abortionists have the right to use smiling children as propaganda? Were they "lucky" enough to have happy, stable lives -- or were they born into poverty, to an unprepared mother or a couple that simply didn't want kids?

If it's ever actually manufactured, a pro-choice license plate could have smiling kids on it, too. Maybe they would smile because they knew that one mistake doesn't have to irrevocably change their lives, or because their right to reproductive freedom is protected -- for now. Or maybe they would just be smiling at the irony that an actual abortion is legal but a license plate supporting one isn't.

Editor's note: Some of the information from this article came from a clip on CNN that can be viewed here: alternet.org/video.

We've got to get rid of the vast majority of elected officials who are pro-stupidity and pro-brainwashing instead of pro-choice and pro-freedom. We need to clear-cut all these elected dinosaurs and replace them with real-democracy and real-choice and real-decency and real environmentalist folks.

why politicize moral issues like abortion? There can never be a solution to this argument.

Why not concentrate on other issues like trade, taxes, healthcare, infrastructure? These issues are ones that can be solved.
Issues like abortion can never be solved. They just divide us and nothing ever gets done. Besides, the GOP is not going to actually do anything about it.

Wealthy white males

First, I must state that I do not tend to be a male basher. Thankfully, I have known many enlightened, intelligent and compassionate men throughout my life -- starting with my own father and including my wonderful husband.

But, as my dad says, if just ONE of these guys like Mr. "Fair" (curious misnomer) ever had to go through the sea changes (physical, emotional, financial) of having a child, most talk of doing away with abortion would end. Moreso if they were forced to do so in a society like ours which negates the existance of families in professional life.

I am certainly one of the lucky ones because my child was planned, I have a supportive partner and I don't "have to" work right now. We had time to plan financially and emotionally for the birth of our child.

Even with these things in place, you would be amazed at how much of a challenge having a baby can be. My personal bank account is now down to $200. That is less than what I had in there when I was a high school student. Yes, we can live well enough from my husband's income so there is no real crisis for me. But, I gave up a lot when I stopped working...medical benefits, savings, contributions to retirement, etc.

Why don't I work? Well, as a woman in a service oriented profession (librarian) I earned a modest salary. After deducting $600-$700/month for full time daycare, $60/week for commuting costs, $50/month for parking and assorted costs involved with the inevitable lunches out or convenience dinners a dual working family is likely to eat when pressed for time, I felt like I was deducting half my monthly take-home pay to cover the costs of working. --Getting into the emotional costs involved when both parents are separated from their preschooler for 8-10 hours per day is an entirely different yet equally complicated discussion.

How many of these well off males who rail against a woman's right to plan her reproductive life would readily give up their income, their savings and their prestige to raise a child? How many of these guys would be motivated to go to work every day merely to "hold their place" and see so little of their paycheck actually go into their own bank account?

Women understand this and middle and working class men understand this (unless they have been totally consumed by religious dogma). Millionaire males will never "get" the real world challenges faced by families today (and throughout history). Since they have a wildly disproportionate say in how our society operates, the rest of us are screwed.

re-educating the right

The re-education of the right is a journey that must be taken, but will be fraught with danger and setbacks. Still, it is worth the effort so that America can become the progressive, secular place of freedom and justice it once was.

If I ever lived in a state with one of those obviously political "pro-life" license plate policies, I would be obliged to paint out the "pro-life" message. What gall these Republicans have, forcing their religion and their politics on the rest of us. Adolph Hitler would be proud. linked text

A Floridian, sick of those plates

Every time I see one of these yellow "happy kids" license plates it gets my hackles up. Why? Because it's misleading, that's why. Money from these plates go to organizions that are religious in nature, so I feel that the state is sponsoring religion. It's not a snap decision for a woman to give up a baby for adoption, especially after carrying it for 40 weeks. I would love to have a pro-choice plate in my state, but I don't see it as a possibility with a repub legislature. I don't see a fetus as a baby, such as in a cuddly cooing creature. Until it's born, it's a fetus, pure and simple. I am intimately aware of the stages of fetal development, having had 4 kids. If someome wants an abortion, it's their choice, not mine. If they want to go through a pregnancy, it's their choice, not mine. All women are entitled to proper medical care whether it is an abortion or a pregnancy.

I've never seen an obit in the paper for a zygote or fetus. If the anti-choice nutcases really believe those are babies, they need to buy funerals, burial plots and headstones. C'mon, put your money where your mouth is and while I'm at it, what about all those frozen babies waiting for uteruses? Isn't that a human rights issue? Imagine being frozen. That's just wrong.

Life/not life, human/not human, god/no god, and so on, these are the questions for theology and philosophy. Separation of church and state applies.

Legally derived rights, on the other hand, apply to citizens (and if you don't think the right wing bible thumpers don't believe this, check out their arguments to support U.S violations of human rights in Guantanamo).

Pregnant woman = citizen : feotus = not a citizen.

Until one is born, one is not a citizen of the United States of America, nor of any other country, and cannot get citizenship protection.

When the christo-fascists grant citizenship to the feotus of an illegal immigrant because fertilization occured here, then I'll be impressed with thier "right to life" arguments.

Pro life advocates would perhaps be taken more seriously if if they were to support the following.
End Americas resource war on the 3rd world nations.
End Americas economic slavery against our own people and the world.
End Americas death penalty mostly carried out against the poor.
Perhaps more mothers would be able to carry to term and support their children after birth if Americas Jack Boot was removed from the face of planet Earth.

consider why abortion hasn't been banned outright

he reason why abortion has yet to be banned outright here in the USA, is, because a sufficient portion of the morally ambiguous "moral majority" want to, retain the option of abortion for themselves. Sunday morning they are drying abortion in church, Monday morning they may be driving to an abortion clinic. Anyway I wouldn't think it wise to display pro-choice sentiment on your vehicle in many places. Help fund choice by other direct safer means.

If two cells together constitute life, is everyone a murderer?
Posted by: paulaH on Jul 4, 2006 10:59 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Someone commented that two cells coming together constitute life. Does that mean when you drink and you kill several of your brain cells which are together, you're guilty of murder? How about scratching and killing off some skin cells? Ejaculating which, no matter where you put it--whether in a woman or in a tissue--has a bunch of sperm cells together. Do they constitute life since there are more than two cells together and by ejaculating, is a man a murderer?

These are stupids ideas, yes, but saying that two cells make a life is just as stupid.

"Choose" Life
Posted by: WyrdSister on Jul 5, 2006 7:59 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
That's right! It's a CHOICE.

I choose MY life.

I choose freedom.

I choose not to be oppressed by a religion that I did not choose.

If you choose to believe that abortion is bad, then you have already chosen not to have one.

Why is it that you think YOU get to choose what it right for some one who is not you?

Can I make choices for you?

I didnt think think so, so you dont get to make choices for me.

I support your right to choose what you believe, I also support your right to say it out loud, i EVEN support your right to plaster your beliefs all over your car, but know this...

ultimately you are going against your god by sitting in judgement over privacy.

These so-called pro-lifers are nothing but hypocrites. IF you are pro-life, then you don't believe in abortion, you don't believe in the death penalty, you don't believe in war, and you don't believe in killing another human being in any form or fashion. What these nut jobs are is anti-abortion, but too cowardly to call themselves by what they really believe. If abortion is such an important issue for you then wear the name ANTI-ABORTIONIST (proudly) and stop hiding behind the more positive sounding, but totally false name of PRO-LIFER. Since most "pro-lifers" are also religious fanatics they should read up on how God/Jesus feel about lying and bearing false witness. Pro-lifers, for the most part, are religious nuts who are lying about their beliefs. THEY ARE NOT PRO-LIFE. Not in any way, shape, nor form. THEY ARE ANTI-ABORTIONISTS and should tell the truth for a change.

Summing up your beliefs on a license plate is very right-wing. No thought, no argument, no controversy, it's my way or the highway, buddy!! Pro-choice could mean anti-abortion or pro-life as well as pro-abortion or libertarian. Try fitting that on a license plate. Right wingers have to stay on message with trinkets and gimmicks, whereas people who believe in freedom carry their feelings inside.

One can argue that "Choose Life" is a generic term, not related to abortion. And that by choosing to have an abortion, a woman can choose to control her own life.

On a related topic...given all the anti-drug propaganda, like the DARE bumper stickers, one wonders if one can get a license plate holder that says "Just say yes to drugs."
