Minimum Wage: Lowest in 50 Years

The Progress Report. Posted June 22, 2006.

Paying working folks a livable wage helps everyone, but it's been nine years -- and nine Congressional pay raises -- since the minimum wage was last increased.

The buying power of the federal minimum wage is currently at its lowest level in 51 years. Eighty-three percent of Americans favor an increase in the minimum wage (nearly half "strongly support" it). Yet, the House conservative leadership hasn't allowed a full floor vote on the minimum wage since the last increase went into effect, in 1997.

Yesterday, the House Appropriations Committee voted 34 to 28 against attaching a minimum wage amendment to a key spending bill, thus depriving it of a vote on the House floor. But last week, that same committee had agreed to attach the minimum wage amendment to a separate spending measure that funds the departments of Labor and Health and Human Services. Upon passage of last week's amendment, the House leadership announced it would delay bringing the Labor-Health bill to the floor for a vote, and in the meantime, will undoubtedly undertake efforts to strip the minimum wage provision from the bill. The Senate vote today on an amendment offered by Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA) to raise the federal minimum wage, in three gradual installments over two years, from $5.15 to $7.25 an hour.

In the nine years since the federal minimum wage was raised, Congress has voted itself nine pay hikes totaling nearly $35,000 a year, while a full-time minimum wage worker's annual pay has not budged from $10,712. Just a few days ago, House lawmakers cleared the way for a $3,300 pay raise that will increase their salaries to $168,500. "It's the height of hypocrisy," said Kennedy.

Conservatives playing politics

The Senate conservative leadership is rallying opposition to Sen. Kennedy's minimum wage amendment by offering a "poison pill" measure that is meant to deter any debate on the issue. The alternative amendment, sponsored by Sen. Mike Enzi (R-WY), would raise the minimum wage to $6.25, but would couple that raise with unpalatable "reductions in overtime pay and tax cuts for businesses." This isn't the first act of political gamesmanship by the Senate conservatives. Earlier, the Senate leadership, led by Sen. Bill Frist (R-TN), floated the idea of trying to "sink the minimum-wage increase by linking it to an unrelated measure that would make it a crime to transport a minor across state lines to get an abortion."

The House conservative leadership is playing its own brand of politics with the minimum wage amendment. They are using "a cruder legislative technique" -- simply refusing to allow the measure to come to the House floor for a vote. Just a week after voting to pass a minimum wage amendment out of the House Appropriations Committee, five committee members -- Reps. Bill Young (R-FL), Jim Walsh (R-NY), Don Sherwood (R-PA), Mike Simpson (R-ID), and Ray LaHood (R-IL) -- switched their votes yesterday and prevented the same amendment from being passed out of the committee on a separate bill. Two other congressmen -- Reps. Jo Ann Emerson (R-MO) and John Sweeney (R-NY) -- voted for the minimum wage amendment last week but were absent yesterday.

Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, a lead sponsor of the language, said he was confident a wage increase could pass on its own if allowed a floor vote, but Majority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) said he is unlikely to allow it. "There are limits to my willingness to just throw anything out on the floor," he said.

The jobs myth

In the face of a growing movement behind increasing the minimum wage, the Right is in desperation mode and resorting to peddling regurgitated false claims that a raise hurts small businesses and job growth, increases poverty, and only benefits teenagers. In fact, the evidence as demonstrated below points in the other direction. Efforts to raise the minimum wage since 1997 have failed because business groups have opposed the measure and lobbied against it. "A group of more than 20 business organizations are fighting an increase this year, as part of the 'Coalition for Job Opportunities.'" Their members claim that they would have to cut jobs if the federal minimum wage were raised.

Republicans are assholes

For the life of me, I just cannot understand the moral and ethical depravity of these bastards. The American people are in favor of raising the minimum wage and studies show it generally does not hurt businesses, but the evil, greedy bastards in charge are soooo worried that throwing a few more crumbs to the hardworking men and women who clean their homes and businesses, slaughter and package their meat, manufacture and deliver their goods, and perform all the other low-skilled and unappreciated jobs, might actually earn enough money to raise their standard of living above the poverty line (which, if you do the research, you will find is already set too low). A vote against this policy is antithetical to calling yourself a Christian, but then, we all know the Republicans are not really Christians any more than GW Bush is the best president the US has ever had. Unfortunately, the one-issue anti-abortion dumbasses who elected these nincompoops are the ones who should be most ashamed. By failing to raise the minimum wage, they are actually making it harder for young, poor mothers and fathers to work and raise their children in dignity... thus being forced to choose between having another unwanted child or an abortion. Think about it.

These characters are unbelievable. They votes themselves RAISES equal to 3x the current annual salary of someone on minimum wage and then have the gall to say they could live on $5.15 and hour if they had to (Frist). They're not Starving the Beast! They're starving hard-working residents of the Good Ol' USA and it's darned time we stopped them!!

Greed is evil. If you try to raise minimum wages in this country. they pack up their factories and move to some foreign country where they can abuse their citizens.

When I graduated from high school back in 1974, there were $5 a hour jobs, and now here it is 2006 and there are still $5 and hour jobs. I would say something is seriously wrong with the economy and American business and their treatment of American workers.

I hundred thousand poor people in New Orleans alone fled the floods. But the Bush baby wants to allow millions of the legal workers into this country. Why not make business play at a decent wage so are all people can have a decent job and support their families.

our government only reflects the backbone of the American people, and we don't have one. We will not stand up for what is wrong, and we act like cattle and forget that the Constitution says "we the people".

NeoCons love to wrap themselves in the Bible and claim to be Christians but the walk never matches the talk. When Jesus, the expert on Christianity, was asked what the greatest commandment was, He said to love God completely and to love your neighbor as yourself.

If you love your neighbor you don't exploit their labor, enslave them with predatory credit, pollute their air, contaminate their water, deny them health care, house them poorly, deny their children a quality education, discriminate against them, spy on them, deny them equal justice before the law, steal their votes, or lie to them.

Jesus also taught that you can tell a person's love for God by the fruit (work & effect) of their lives. Do people who act like this value and love people? I say no. I say they are fakes just using the church and it's people to hide their evil.

Regardless of your faith or lack thereof, we need to approach Christians who have been duped by the NeoCons by asking them to compare words and deeds. Most of the people led down this path are well-intentioned but poorly informed and have blindly followed the slogans and rants of the political users of people of faith.

Ask them quite bluntly:
Do you think Jesus is in favor of paying people a sub-subsistence wage for a day's work?
Do you think Jesus is in favor of denying people in need healthcare?
Do you think that Jesus is in favor of denying children a quality education?
Do you think Jesus is in favor of people being legally exploited by predatory creditors?
Do you think Jesus is in favor of our environment being used like a toilet?
Do you think Jesus is in favor of inequality before the law?

Then ask them this:
Why do you vote for and support people who are doing these very things? Maybe it will open their eyes.

What a bunch of mean SOB's. We've had less than perfect leadership before, but I don't recall ever having seen such cruelty, and the absence of a collective conscience. The religion connection is nothing more than something to hide behind. Much like patriotism. Think of what we've lost in the last 5 yrs. Our American way of life has been taken from us by the people we elect and pay. Screwing the Amer. public certainly pays wel!! Thanks, ANNA

No Need to Raise Min Wage

There is a House Bill to Draft ALL (Women too)18-42 year olds for military and civilian service for a minimum of 2 years.
Wait after the election in November, the people will not have to worry about what their wages are. You will be in the trenches of some foreign country trying to stay alive, while corporations are making Billions from another war. Keep it up America living your own greed and addictions and before you know it you will only be a number on a screen.

When the best you can get for your labor is minimum wage, that would be the clearest sign that you have no value to the labor market. Instead of blaming the world why not try getting a f*cking skill! Life isn't really that hard people. Learn something, call it a profession, get really good at it, don't be the guy that is paid minimum wage. Not that hard. If you are paid minimum wage it means you are too stupid to get a job at McDonalds who hires just about anything with a heartbeat and pays them (In my town 9.50 per hour). For the life of me I don't understand you whining, crying, namby-pamby bed-wetters that think that business SCREWS workers with wages. Workers ACHIEVE the wage that they are paid, or not paid as the case may be. If it is raining out, go inside. If it is cold out, wear a jacket. If you are hungry, find something to eat. If you can't find a job paying more than minimum wage, get a f*cking skill. Idiot.

Backdoor Corporate Welfare
Posted by: gar on Jun 22, 2006 8:30 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
If a person has the fortitude to work forty hours a week, fifty-two weeks a year, then that person deserves the dignity of having access to healthcare and being able to shelter, feed and clothe themselves and their family without having to stand in foodlines or depend on foodstamps or welfare.

If you think about it, any time a working person or that person's family has to rely on the public largess just to survive, we are not actually subsidizing that person. We are subsidizing that person's employer because the employer wouldn't pay their workers enough to actually live! We are contributing to the bottomline of their company as well as the hugh, unearned salaries, bonuses, and retirement packages of the executives of that company.

That the generosity and empathy of the people of this nation could be so taken advantage of in this way is truly an obscenity. Only by forcing corporate America to pay a LIVING wage so that all working people can have a sense of dignity will we ever be able to stop this backdoor corporate welfare.

Minimum Wage is state mandated

Though I agree totally with the idea of raising the fedeally mandated minimum wage (actually, we should pay Congress minimum wage) states are free to enact their own minimum wage standards. Here in Illinois, the minimum is $6.50 (still ridiculously low) and some 20 other states have seen fit to raise above the federal minimum. Perhaps action at the state level--whereby all but the most backward/oppressive/exploitative states (read: Southern Red) will be tied to a more progessive form of incremental increases--is the best solution. Tell your state representative how you feel.

"It is dangerous to be right, when the government is wrong" Voltaire.
(who, by the way, was hugely influential to such liberally-minded progressives as Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson)

All this fal-da-rol over wages. The best reason to increase the minimum wage is that in a few years that'll be what most of us will be making as these morons in the Bush administration keep trashing the middle class and make the rich richer. Watch the crime rate sky rocket in the next few years as we are seeing more food shelves and middle class folks needing them to survive. Too proud to beg perhaps, but not too proud to steal (for the thieves). Roughly two years til the shit hits the fan.

When government is run by a pack of crooks and greed is the motivating factor for everything that is done in this country, what else can you expect but a group of self-righteous, greedy, all for me politicians, maneuvering for their own gain rather than protecting those of us who put them in office. And now that we are on that subject...be very careful who you vote for next time.

Have you ever wondered where the U.S. Military gets the money to fund their operations? How about NASA? Maybe we should oblige them all to go out and campaign for their operating funds instead asking for handouts from the government.

How do you lobbyists make their money? They're paid with the company profits from the sale of products to consumers.

Go ahead, ClassicLib, eliminate all taxes, end wealth distribution and watch what will happen. There's plenty of socialist-like economics that are part and parcel of a typical capitalist system. Stop pretending that they don't co-exist.

Why Not Expand the Earned Income Tax Credit?

How would you respond to the position that an expansion of the Earned Income Tax Credit would be a much more effective and equitable way of helping the working poor than raising the minimum wage?
