South Dakota abortion referendum coming

An abortion rights group in South Dakota submitted 38,000 signatures, more than twice the number needed to force a statewide vote on South Dakota's abortion ban.
Political scientist Scott Lemieux expects the vote to be close:
Despite the fact that the abortion debate tends to inexplicably assume that public opinion directly manifests itself in legislative outcomes, if polls are any indication this will be a close vote, and the new law might very well lose. If that happens, remember that the draconian law passed the legislature overwhelmingly, and remember that the next time a nominal pro-choicer is sanguine about what would happen in legislatures if Roe is overturned.[Lawyers Guns and Money.]
