The 9/11 Story That Got Away

By Rory O'Connor and William Scott Malone, AlterNet. Posted May 18, 2006.

In 2001, an anonymous White House source leaked top-secret NSA intelligence to reporter Judith Miller that Al Qaida was planning a major attack on the United States. But the story never made it into the paper.

On Oct. 12, 2000, the guided missile destroyer USS Cole pulled into harbor for refueling in Aden, Yemen. Less than two hours later, suicide bombers Ibrahim al-Thawr and Abdullah al-Misawa approached the ship's port side in a small inflatable craft laden with explosives and blew a 40-by-40-foot gash in it, killing 17 sailors and injuring 39 others. The attack on the Cole, organized and carried out by Osama bin Laden's Al Qaida terrorist group, was a seminal but still murky and largely misunderstood event in America's ongoing "Long War."

Two weeks prior, military analysts associated with an experimental intelligence program known as ABLE DANGER had warned top officials of the existence of an active Al Qaida cell in Aden, Yemen. And two days before the attack, they had conveyed "actionable intelligence" of possible terrorist activity in and around the port of Aden to Gen. Pete Schoomaker, then commander in chief of the U.S. Special Operation Command (SOCOM).

The same information was also conveyed to a top intelligence officer at the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), headed by the newly appointed Gen. Tommy Franks. As CENTCOM commander, Franks oversaw all U.S. armed forces operations in a 25-country region that included Yemen, as well as the Fifth Fleet, to which the Cole was tasked. It remains unclear what action, if any, top officials at SOCOM and CENTCOM took in response to the ABLE DANGER warnings about planned Al Qaida activities in Aden harbor.

None of the officials involved has ever spoken about the pre-attack warnings, and a post-attack forensic analysis of the episode remains highly classified and off-limits within the bowels of the Pentagon. Subsequent investigations exonerated the Cole's commander, Kirk Lippold, but Lippold's career has been ruined nonetheless. He remains in legal and professional limbo, with a recommended promotion and new command held up for the past four years by political concerns and maneuvering.

Meanwhile, no disciplinary action was ever taken against any SOCOM or CENTCOM officials. Schoomaker was later promoted out of retirement to chief of staff, U.S. Army, and Franks went on to lead the combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Enter Judith Miller, the Pulitzer Prize-winning ex-New York Times reporter at the center of the ongoing perjury and obstruction of justice case involving former top White House official I. Lewis (Scooter) Libby. Miller spent 85 days in jail before finally disclosing that Libby was the anonymous source who confirmed to her that Valerie Plame was a CIA official, although Miller never wrote a story about Plame.

Now, in an exclusive interview, Miller reveals how the attack on the Cole spurred her reporting on Al Qaida and led her, in July 2001, to a still-anonymous top-level White House source, who shared top-secret NSA signals intelligence (SIGINT) concerning an even bigger impending Al Qaida attack, perhaps to be visited on the continental United States.

Ultimately, Miller never wrote that story either. But two months later -- on Sept. 11 -- Miller and her editor at the Times, Stephen Engelberg, both remembered and regretted the story they "didn't do."

Interview with Judith Miller:

"I was working on a special project in 2000-2001 -- trying to do a series on where Al Qaida was, who Al Qaida was, and what kind of a threat it posed to the United States. In the beginning I thought it was going to be pretty straightforward, but it turned out to be anything but. And it took me a long, long time, and a lot of trips to the Middle East, and a lot of dead ends, before I finally understood how I could tell the story to the American people. It was a long-term investigative piece, which meant that for the most part, I didn't write articles on specific individual attacks -- I was working the story …

"I was fairly persuaded that the attack on the Cole was an Al Qaida operation, based on the sources that I was talking to, because I had no independent information, obviously. The people that I was covering ardently believed that Al Qaida was behind a lot of these attacks on American forces and Americans throughout the Middle East that we were beginning to see. At the time there was still a fair amount of debate and a fair amount of resistance to that thesis within the intelligence community, as it's so-called. But from the get go, I think the instinctive reaction of the people I was covering was that this was an Al Qaida operation. So I started looking at the attack on the Cole as an example of Al Qaida terrorism.

"I learned that the Al Qaida Cole attack was not exactly a hugely efficient operation, and I learned later on that there had been an earlier attempt to take out the Cole or another American ship that had floundered badly because of poor Al Qaida training. Because of incidents like that -- you know, overloading a dinghy that was supposed to go have gone out to the ship and blow it up, so that the dinghy would sink -- people tended to discount Al Qaida. They said, 'Oh, they are just a bunch of amateurs." But I'd never thought that. I never believed that. And the people I was covering didn't think that …

"I had begun to hear rumors about intensified intercepts and tapping of telephones. But that was just vaguest kind of rumors in the street, indicators … I remember the weekend before July 4, 2001, in particular, because for some reason the people who were worried about Al Qaida believed that was the weekend that there was going to be an attack on the United States or on a major American target somewhere. It was going to be a large, well-coordinated attack. Because of the July 4 holiday, this was an ideal opportunistic target and date for Al Qaida.

September 11 was a terrible thing, but at least it brought out the true colours of Bush and his Cronies and their brain-dead supporters. Just imagine if they had been left to themselves without the world watching - what might they have got up to then? It's been bad enough what they've done with the world actually watching! (and, in many cases, actively participating. Like my stupid Prime Minister)

... if someone had told the rest of us about the warnings that Little Miss Run Amok, Judith Miller, talks about in this interview?

I catalogued many of the warnings in the year or so after 9/11, in my What Did They Know And When Did They Know It series. Most of the links to articles don’t work any more, but I captured an essential sentence or two from each article, and there’s enough information about each one to find it in Lexis/Nexis, for those who have a subscription. See especially the pages for the first three questions:

What did George Bush himself know, prior to the attacks?,

Why were certain people warned not to fly on or about September 11 (or even earlier), and not the rest of us?, and

Did the U.S. know that the attacks were going to happen?

I don’t say the Bush administration actually planned and carried out the attacks, as do some netizens. We don’t have to go that far. The fact is that there were plenty of warnings and those warnings were ignored. Consistently. Was it due to incompetence, or was it purposeful? It could only have been one or the other. If it was purposeful, the administration was providing itself the “new Pearl Harbor” that the Project for the New American Century said would be necessary to scare the American people into becoming militaristic. And giving up our freedoms.

Worked pretty well for a while, didn’t it?

"And Washington being Washington, and the CT world being the CT world, I was soon off pursuing other things." And, the corporate-owned media being the corporate-owned media!
When will we ever learn? The days of independent reporting have been over for quite a while now. It's no use listening to the likes of Chris Matthews, The New York Times, the Washingotn Post, Dan Rather, et al. They all tow the line of their corporations and the corporations ties to BUSH, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Chavez, and Halleburton, oil companies, lobbyists. I have no faith in our nation's "leaders" anymore.

I don't believe her

I don't know if she thinks she's telling the truth or not--that's not my call. But I do not believe her story because it backs a version of 9/11 that is false.

What I do know is that many of the alleged hijackers were confirmed ALIVE after September 11. There exists no legal evidence proving those men were involved and none of them were particularly good pilots. Their names were never on the flight manifests and airport security cameras did not see them board the planes.

Therefore I must conclude that the men in the official story were not the hijackers if there actually were hijackers.

Against all precedent in history and physics, those steel and concrete buildings collapsed into neat piles at free-fall speed after brief, cool-burning fires. The concrete was transformed into a fine powder on the way down. Mere fire cannot do this. Therefore the official story of fire damage and gravity is clearly false. No steel/concrete building has EVER collapsed due to fire. The twin towers were vaporized. A controlled demolition is far more likely.

There is a very long tradition in history of governments faking attacks on their own people in order to foment the wars they need. The Nazis had men dress up as Poles and attack a German installation. Hitler's government was complicit in the burning of the Reichstag, Germany's 9/11. The sinkings of the Lusitania and the Maine were coaxed into happening by our own government. The Japanese were economically corralled into Pearl Harbor and their spies beforehand were given explicit leeway to explore by intelligence agencies. Such "false flag" operations go back as far as Rome. Probably farther.

As disgusted as we all are with the Bush gang, why is it such a stretch to explore the possibility that 9/11 was quite likely the latest, most arrogant and blatant false flag operation in the history of mankind?

Even if you don't want to go that far, why is a supposed "alter net" publishing a story that reinforces a clearly false version of events published by the government it so distruts?

Several people have asked why Alternet is running this piece of propaganda which only reinforces the official cover-up story.
Well how come YOU don't believe that story, people? It's because you've had alternative information--and where did you get that information? Probably from the Internet. When the corporate media is a complicitor, a part of the corporate-government-media complex which is now a seamless, intertwined whole--the Internet is a lifeline of information oxygen in this country. Naturally, the Complex is trying to cut that lifeline--by setting up tollbooths on the information highway so that corporations with money to spend can still have access but all the millions of little guys will be stymied. And to get this through Congress, they've set up and funded a front group, HandsOff the Net, which is running disinformation ads on...Alternet. This is a much bigger question than why they ran Miller's crap. Why is Alternet suicidally running an ad intended to keep opposition pressure below the level where it could stop this heist, by confusing people?
I really appreciate how easy Alternet has made this sort of response, this kind of conversation--but they are making an enormous mistake here.

The media and the government were too busy goose-chasing Gary Condit on a personal affair matter all the while ignoring the real danger. No matter how much spying the NSA does against the American people, until terrorists are ever held accountable, the mess will continue. It's pathetic that in exchange for giving up genuine freedom/security, we're forced with fake "freedom/security".

9/11...A homegrown attack!

As unbelieveable as it is, the majority of the sheeple in this country still believe the "official" story about the 19 hijackers with box cutters. If one looks at all of the pieces to the puzzle, it is so blatently obvious that 9/11 was the planned precurser for the takeover of our government by the neoconservatives. Had 9/11 NOT happened, the passage of laws such as the Patriot Act, wiretapping and data mining of domestic phone calls and e-mails, and the war in Iraq would NEVER be accepted by the American public. This actually allowed a two pronged attack on our country. In addition to the hijacking of our Constitution, the prospect of endless war, made possible by our "fighting back against terrorism" is of enormous benefit to the defense contractors, and because of the location of this endless war, the middle east (aka America's gas station), an opportunity to manipulate the availability, and thus the price of crude oil and the products made from crude oil. We know 9/11 was an inside job, besides the obvious from the video footage taken that tragic day. If the government wasn't invoved, why would they be objecting so strongly to further investigation?

Even if Ms. Miller was tipped off to 9/11 before the fact, it doesn't matter. There is no reason to tell this story now, except to augment Ms. Miller's income, which is probably somewhat reduced since the Times fired her.

Judith Miller needs to slink off like Nixon and never be heard from again (that is if she's not going to be prosecuted for treason).

The kind of wild conspiracy theory postings I'm reading here are exactly why the world, much less the American electorate, will not listen to progressives who look at the Neo-Conservatives in power in Washington with alarm.

Judith Miller's account of this warning is perfectly credible and part of her beat at the time. She was a good reporter compromised by her ties inside the Administration, but her failure to write this story comes down to an editor's choice. She didn't have the 3rd paragraph.

Would it have made a difference? Probably not with a new administration in office, after 8 years in the wilderness and no experience in foreign policy and led by the least competent President of modern times. But at least a NY Times story on this could have alerted the Republic to the possibility that it would be attacked in the homeland.

Without frothing into conspiracy mode, enough documentation out of the White House and the various intelligence and law enforcement organizations clearly establish that the Bush Administration had enough advanced knowledge to have taken far more defensive measures. Most importantly, if they feared a national panic, the measures they could have taken would have been transparent to the average citizen, and would have shown up only when they came to our rescue.

So whether it is gross incompetence or grave high crimes and misdemeanors, we were had.

Forget the spooky stuff, we have enough to go on to clearly establish just how bad this Administration is and how uncaring they really are about any of us - especially all of those brave people who aren't here any longer - God rest their souls.

If her sources were credible at all then she would have known it was no cessna. She would never have thought for one minute that it was a cessna. So either she is lying or she had really bad sources. Many people knew before 9/11 that the threat of planes flying into the WTC was real.

The Critical Issue is What Al Qaida Wanted
Posted by: mikedarwin on May 18, 2006 8:16 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
One of the most critical things revealed in the ongoing “Miller's tale” is this that the overheard conversation between terrorists illustrates that al Qaida wanted a major response to an act of terrorism by the United States. If we reacted with an overall attack against what might be seen as Islam, and not just the terrorists responsible for 9/11, then al Qaida would have the “evidence” it needed to convince a wider audience that United States is a great Satan seeking to destroy Islam and its followers. As noted in the article we did not so respond to the Cole attack; Clinton consistently tried to limit our responses to the actual perpetuators of the terror not the culture in which they hid. Such a focused response did not confirm al Qaida’s claims about America’s goals and the intent of its leaders.

Given the global participation in our strike in Afghanistan, al Qaida still did not receive the true response they needed to significantly advance their agenda. Unfortunately, Bush’s war in Iraq has provided al Qaida the images of American aggression to hold up before the entire Islamic populace.

The US won't let Israel fail not because it gives a crap about Jews, but because the Christians believe that the state of Israel must be in existance for prophesy as they interpret it to come to pass regarding Armageddon, the awaited end of Israel during the ensuing battle between the supernaturals, and the end of the world. The Jews and Israel are being preserved so that Jesus can annhiliate them in the end times, or so the myth goes. THAT'S why America is vested in Israel in my opinion, why the Allied forces created it from Paleastine after WWII and why we pour so many of our resources to preserve it.

Of course, American Jewry supports this policy whatever motivates Christian America, and Judiasm is given lip service in comments like, "America is a Judeo-Christian nation", but make no mistake, there is no love of Israel, just the need to preserve it for the Gotterdammerung expected to ensue.

Nice, huh? Another way that religion blesses out daily lives.

The following extract is from the Alternet article. Bear in mind two things about the Cole attack. 1) That operation was planned in January 2000 in Kuala Lumpur by a group that included the Flt. 77 hiajckers and Atta's roommate. The CIA learned about it when the NSA intercepted calls from Nawaf Al-Hazmi and Khalid al-Midahar as they prepared to travel to Kuala Lumpur -- that pair would go on to hijack Flt. 77 that crashed into the Pentagon. 2) Al-Hazmi and Al-Midhar entered the US at LAX on 1/15/00 - the CIA noted that entry, and the FBI liason at CTC was ordered to withhold a cable to John O'Neill's FBI national security office in NY.

Despite the fact that CIA knew the pair were in the US, the Agency never requested FISA warrants to intercept their calls. Al-Midharleft that summer and went on to play an active role in the Cole operation, returning to the US in March 2001. His partner, al-Hazmi, stayed in the US and the pair met up with the other main hijackers on several occasions, and received money from sources including the Saudi embassy and a Indonesian businessman who also gave $40,000 to Moussaoui.

Zakarias had stayed at the same house in Kuala Lumpur owned by the businessman where the al-Qaeda planning summit had occurred in January 2000, a meeting the CIA had monitored along with "a half dozen allied agencies".

How did Able Danger learn about the so-called Brooklyn Cell? Able Danger had access to classified DoD files, which presumably included the NSA intercepts of al-Hazmi and al-Midhar. Quite clearly, if surveillance on the the Flt. 77 hijackers (and there's no plausible reason that monitoring wouldn't have continued), the Able Danger project had advance warning of the attack operations on U.S. military targets -- the USS Cole, and likely also the Pentagon.

Under the force protection exception, NSA could have conducted warrantless taps on the al-Qaeda cell inside the U.S., and that would be in the domestic NSA intercept files available to Able Danger.

Despite the fact that the intended attacks on U.S. military targets would be well-understood, for some reason that still hasn't been explained, President George W. Bush refused to have the pair and their al-Qaeda cellmates inside the US arrested during the summer of 2001. See, http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/9/28/121022/933

Bear that in mind when you read the following: http://www.alternet.org/story/36388 /

It remains unclear what action, if any, top officials at SOCOM and CENTCOM took in response to the ABLE DANGER warnings

I question the wisdom of Alternet interviewing a COMPULIVE LIAR

I am seriously questioning the wisdom and intention of Alternet by the act of interviewing and giving print space to Judith Miller. Miller's reporting about about WMD's in Iraq has been proven to be completely inaccurate. Miller became captivated by her sources, did not validate what they said, and then seriously abused her profession and the American public by reporting false assumptions from questionable sources. That reporting has been proven completely inaccurate and that inaccurate reporting supported the Bush administrations reasons for pre-emptively invading Iraq. Judy Miller lied and has participated in one of the most serious lies ever fed to the American public. She has blood on her hands, and feels no guilt. Thosuands are dead as a direct result of her reporting

Judy Miller is a compusive liar, and I believe a psychopath (a person willing to do physical harm to another to get their way). She does not demonstrate any conscience, in fact when confronted with her false reporting about WMD's in Iraq she replied "I was fucking right".

If Alternet continues to give a compulsive liar space for printing potential mis-information and lies, I will have no choice to boycott not only Judy Miller but Alternet.

Alternet has soiled their own website by giving Judy Miller the opportunity to fulfill her own needs. She should not be given another opportunity to feed the American people lies.

Was Judith Miller set up?

From Ms. Miller in the article:
"I got the sense that part of the reason that I was being told of what was going on was that the people in counter-terrorism were trying to get the word to the president or the senior officials through the press, because they were not able to get listened to themselves."

"Sometimes, you wonder about why people tell you things. . . .

"This was a case wherein some serious preparations were made. . . ."As somebody metaphorically put it: 'They uncorked the White House champagne' that weekend because nothing had happened."

". . .one Al Qaida operative was overheard saying to the other, 'Don't worry; we're planning something so big now that the U.S. will have to respond.' "
- - - -
Did Ms. Miller ever consider that she, like others in the media, was set up to "know" about a terrorist attack that was in fact already in the works and known by the administration? She was given somewhat secretive information from government counter-terrorists because, "they couldn't talk to the president"?! She even wondered why she was being told.

And, even though she reports that there was much concern over the 4th of July, 2001 weekend about an attack, we were still caught with our pants around our ankles – and with our air defenses standing down for the first time in history – on 9/11.

And, Al Qaida operatives were stupid enough to talk about a future attack over phone lines they could be sure were being tapped, even though at nearly all other times they spoke of such things indirectly and in metaphors? Gee, you'd almost think they wanted to be overheard.

Now that Ms. Miller has divulged this new info, maybe she also has more info about the 9/11 attack – such as how two slender, 1400-foot tall buildings with asymetrical damage both fell neatly into their own footprints, something that only happens in controlled demolitions, or why they fell at all, no skyscraper before or since ever having collapsed due to fire. Or how crews managed to rig WTC #7 for demolition in less than 8 hours – a feat that normally takes much planning and days or weeks to accomplish.

Will Ms. Miller ever illuminate for us any other of the hundreds of anomalies that make the standard-issue govt. story about 9/11 so unbelievable? I doubt it. After all, she is but one of an army of toadies in the "mainstream" media who seem happy to operate as designated suckers for the Bush administration. And they're convinced that we're suckers as well.

Some names are just like a dead animal for vultures...

Judith Miller is indeed a contemptable shill. But this interview describes how and wny she may have become the contempt worthy reporter that she became.

You have to remember the difference between pre 9/11 and post 9/11. Pre 9/11 the good guys were screaming about Al Queda and the bad guys were worried about missile defense. Judith Miller was working with the good guys... relatively speaking... people like Richard Clark who expected an attack.... and who were being ignored.

Post 9/11 the bad guys adopted the anti-Al Queda agenda, and twisted it to support a war in Iraq, and pretended that the pre 9/11 warnings hadn't been made, weren't serious, etc.

Judith Miller, whether out of political bias, moral weakness, a character flaw, or for whatever other reason, appears to have been inclined to cozy up to people who warn of dangers. She seems to believe reports, believe intelligence officials, be willing to give credence to their claims, urge publication of their information....

Whether that's a good thing or not kind of depends on whether or not the officials are themselves balanced (Richard Clark?) or unbalanced (post 9/11 Rumsfeld and company).

Judith Miller herself appears to be just a conduit, without a lot of political sense or moral backbone, ready to be used. She's not that interesting. The people who used her, the ones who used her before 9/11 and the ones who used her after 9/11 are more interesting.

I have no idea whether Judy Miller's story is credible or not. I have no opinion about whether the Bushies knowingly let this happen or whether there's something fishy about what happened at the Pentagon. (We do know, however, that a plane crashed somewhere.)
And I think it's doubtful that if the NYTimes had published her story in the summer of 2001 it would have made any difference. After all, on Aug 6 the president received in his hot little hands a CIA briefing entitled "Bin Laden determined to strike within the US." Then he went out to clear brush or ride his bicycle (or have a drink). It hardly matters.

The question we should be asking is why wasn't this covered in the 9/11 investigation and report? Who is this "source" who has not come forth him or herself?
Why did Rice insist that we had no way of knowing in advance even as the title of the 8/6/01 PDB was read to her during her testimony and on C-span to boot?
Complete incomptence is as good an explanation as any for the Bushies failure to imagine that Al Qaeda would attack us inside the US. After all, the post-Katrina disaster was predicted both many years in advance and minute-by-minute as the hurricane gathered strength, aimed for New Orleans, devastated the area with high winds and rain, and departed. And where was Georgie Porgie? On his way to Los Angeles to give a speech. Who was in charge on the Federal level? 'Heckuva' job Brownie. Chertoff was giving a speech in Atlanta.
Why the Bushies are so incompetent and why the country and especially the MSM has been so slow to catch on is a mystery.
Anybody have any ideas on that?

The idea that Al Qaida would actually strike in the United States, not at the Cole or overseas, or in Jordan as part of a warning bombing plot, but here in the U.S., that was just kind of unthinkable!

I believe what Miller says in her comments, because even as a small-timey reporter that I was, you're always holding on to choice morsels that you can't seem to get more out of. But what I can't get my mind around are the constant claims of "it was unthinkable" from what I would otherwise consider to be professionals -- professional journalists like those TV anchors and Miller, and government officials and politicans themselves. I mean, c'mon! I'd been expecting a major attack for years. As shocked as I was by the magnitude on 9/11, I was not at all surprised. And who am I? Nobody. Just a guy who pays attention to the way the world works.

This stuff just reinforces my belief that the movers and shakers of the world -- the people who are supposedly our leaders, our idols, and our betters -- are morons.

I grew up two hours from the City. When 9/11 it was surreal. People keep making movies, why?? Is it that we don't know what happened?? Is it that we overlooked something when it happened?? Did we miss someone dying!!?? LEAVE IT ALONE!!

Also, there have been numerous reports about how the CIA knew and the press knew and perhaps even an undercover member of Menudo knew. I guess that's great and we are all thinking, "If only we knew...". From the look of it we did know and it happened anyway. So why do we keep bringing up the fact that everyone knew and did nothing.

People would read it in the paper and shake their heads at the improbability. The government (who has handled things so well so far) would have done nothing.

Can we please focus on what can do. I keep hearing how the world has changed so much, our intelligence community has changed so much. So why are we looking at the way we used to do things if the playing field has changed?? For mistakes?? We made them already, no need for review.

Watch the movies, they can act as training films.

The Continuing Questions....

The continuing questions we all seem to ask ourselves ...
"how do we "shake awake" all those who still think a few camel riders are going to do us in"? How is a band of ex-
freedom fighters from Afghanistan going to "cripple" this technological & military powerhouse of a country??? That simple fact in and of itself should make people ...at least....
wonder about whats going on and....... CAN THIS BE TRUE??
But when you have journalist who refuse to "dig"..to go out on that limb....to rub people the wrong way....to ruffle the feathers of an unreachable official ...to "FEEL" for truth and honesty in what they look for....to have "editors" who have just an "ounce" of moral rightiousness and are willing to go to press with a story they believe in their hearts to have merit!
If an investagative reporter really wants the story of his or her lifetime...all they have to do is find the "True Story" of how our current state of affairs have come to this!!! Go look
for those who traded the airline stocks before this "tragic" event.Who had close contacts with those who did the trading?
Who knew this was about to shake loose??????
Its there to be found Ms.Miller...if only you have the professional courage it`ll take to find it.... THEN...we`ll all look forward to reading your next informative artical!!!!

Great she tells the tell now. Did we not know. So what is the real truth. What did Bush, his group know; when did they know; is the decider which allows us, usa citizens know he knew, he allowed to happen, if he was not a major player in 911, since he and his elk of haves and have mores are the only benefactors in the looting of the wealth from usa citizens. Condi knew she called Willie Brown and told him to stay of planes. Miller has no reason to smile has she no shame. I am of the belief that the towers fell like the other 47 story building through controlled demolitions. so my belief as distorted as it may be is that all are guilty of treason and the american people will never see these have and have mores receive the justice these treasoness individuals deserve. Hundred of thousands of lives lost, maimed and the total destruction of old cities in Afghanistan, Iraq history. What evil our usa governmental individuals have brought to us all, shame.

So what ??

Before it actually happened the 9/11 scenario was one of thousands of possible/improbable scenarious for screewriters and jihadists to fantasize about.

Like the prophecies of Nostradamus, after the fact "Bin Landin Determined to Attack in US" looks like a crystal clear prediction of exactly what was going to happen, and how it was going to be done. All we needed to do was "connect the dots."

The problem was: so many extranious dots. "Creepy arab guy taking flight lessons in Oklahoma !!!" Yeah, and another creepy arab guy is taking pictures of reservoirs, 3 more are studying biophysics at different universities, 1,500 more have overstayed their tourist visas, hundreds of unidentified men (we don't know if they're arab or not) are observed 'train spotting' ... buying inflatable boats ... and so on and so on.

After the fact it was all so obvious ...

So, frankly, what Judith Miller knew and when she knew it is supposed to have 'prevented 9/11.' Please !

El Qada worked smart ... and they got lucky. They pulled off the greatest commando mission since the Trojan Horse -- but they were unable to follow up with another equally impressive feat. They lost their sponsoring state. Their organization was disrupted, their leader became a fugitive in the wilderness -- and all the United States had to do was adopt the attitude

"Was that your best shot, asshole??"

"Three thousand dead and a couple of billion dollars in property damage, big deal! For that we're going to empty our treasury and terrorize our own citizens? Screw that! In the future we'll lock our cockpit doors and tighten up our money-transfer regulations. Maybe we'll quietly beef up our counter terror organizations. But meanwhile: we need to kill 3 thousand jihadists in Afganistan ... does anyone have a problem with that ??

On on September 12 ... noone WOULD have had a problem with it. In fact, a limited 'eye for eye' vengence in the Afghan countryside (especially if the casualties were all more or less Taliban fighters) might have played very well in Cairo and Ramallah. "Oh, yeah, blood vengence ... not too much ... not too little ... business as usual - Death to Israel, and goodnight!"

And maybe we'd still have privacy rights and a budget surplus.

Instead we're picking at the scab of 9/11, and asking each other 'how could Judith Miller have kept us safe by sharing what she knew with the public?"

Bin Laden called his shot, and he made his shot. He predicted the 'self-destructive wounded giant' reaction, and we -- government and populace alike -- made him the Greatest Jihadist since Ali conquered Bagdad.

What I'd Do to Judy Miller

I’d force Ms. Miller to be an orderly at Walter Reed Med. Center to work with amputee or blind/brain-damaged Iraq War veterans. Injures (and deaths) for which she is partly to blame. Like B. Woodward, she has jettisoned all that was good about American journalism in the 1970s Watergate era and turned herself into a whore for the very people she’s supposed to be exposing as liars. It’s all about fame/money/power with this new lot of sleazy journalists. The transaction which took place between Cheney and Miller is the same as a transaction between a whore and a John...both needed and got something out of the transaction. Cheney got the credibility for WMD lies by having Ms. Miller agree to be a sternographer and publish “evidence” of WMDs in the nation’s most important paper, the “liberal” NY Times. The very next day after publication, Cheney went on all the Sunday talk shows to milk the story for all it’s worth. Ms. Miller in turn got inner access to the power elite and (short-lived) journalistic glory.

She is not worthy of a lead article on Alternet for any reason. In my eyes she can only redeem herself by cleaning up the bodily fluids/waste of our wounded Iraq War soldiers.

First, I believe the government wanted 9/11 to happen. There is a ton of evidence out there that the government has suppressed. Why has it taken so long to release the video footage of the pentagon? They needed time to doctor it. How does a plane that crash in PA get spread out over a 7 mile radius? It was shot down. Rummy even let this slip out.

Nothing could have stopped 9/11.

Tomorrow, The National Review has an exclusive with Michael Moore.

Why would anyone believe anything this discredited (and deservedly fired) mouthpiece for BushCo and the neocons has to say after her "brilliant" reporting on the WMD? She was one of the primary sources of credibility for that bullshit.

Then, she was protecting her "source" and went to jail to become a 1st Amendment martyr. Only it turned out her "source" was actually the person committing the crime, so all she did was delay and impede the investigation into the Plame outing.

And now she wants us to believe that she coulda/woulda/shoulda stopped 9/11 "if only"...

I would expect this kind of self-serving bullshit from Miller; after all, she has a reputation to polish and/or a book to sell. But why, oh why, is this bullshit on AlterNet, when it belongs in the trash?

I am afraid I now must take everything on this site with several grains (no, the whole shaker) of salt -- that is, if I ever come back here.

Ms. Miller, if believable, must have lots of nightmares. Her cohert at NYT, Steve Engelberg, must also have bad dreams. They are worse than traitors. Jounalism is covering all sides of an issue and letting the people who listen/read decide. I would not want to be either of these 2 people. 3000 deaths. An illegitimate war with thousands dead. If true, Miller and Engelberg can still do something to rectify the horrors that have come to pass. They can fight for justice and prosecution of lawbreakers, maybe themselves.

We the people must keep our perspective against all odds. There are many more powerful people who are liable for these deaths. There are bad things happening right now.

Yes, this is a crock! As competitive as the news business is, it's difficult to imagine Ms. Miller, or any investigative reporter trying to feed us this, "Awwww, gee, I probably shoulda filed this" story!

It appears Ms. Miller has been co-opted by the very same powers that control the "official" spin-doctoring to keep us detoured away from all the pieces of evidence, as those so meticulously put together in Google's Loose Change video. This sudden "awwww-I-shoulda-reported-it" is just another blatant deception intended to keep us off track!

Little by little, the truth is coming out. It seems a race against time to put this jigsaw puzzle together on 9/11 and connect the dots to the ties that link control of oil, invading Iraq, threatening Iran while being chummy with Libya, and it all begins to explain an otherwise fragmented foreign policy.

Little by little, pieces of the truth will expose the political bullshit for what it is. Failing that, the Constitutional foundations of this country are in grave danger from the lunatic and terror-mongering sonofbitch in the Oval Office.

When did she turn honest?

I missed that story.

It was about in July of 2001 that Ashcroft switched from commercial flights to chartered jets.

The land where fiction is fact, and government by the elite is good. The sadness of this situation is overwhelming to those of us who are not brainwashed. We mostly stand alone, and some of us have left the country altogether.

Look again at the expression on the face of Bush when told about 9/11. Someone who didn't know what was happening would have wanted to find out everything about what was going on.

Try this caption when you look at his face.

"Oh my god, it's happening".

Bush knew.

Bush knew there was a war game going on.
Cheney told him that.
Card told Bush something went wrong with the war game,
or something along those lines i bet.
thats why Bush didnt get up right away.
they WANTED him to sit for a while longer, till it unfolded more.
Bush was the only one to be able to issue the shoot down order.

heres an alternative take on it.

They couldnt shoot them down, cos they wernt real
( the radar blips wernt, the planes were )
either the war games planes were flying in close proximity,
and were purposely mistaken for the real planes,
OR
the blips on the radar were created by software somehow.
remember, NORAD AND NEADS never saw the radar blips.
VERY curious to me.
They tried to hide that fact, actually, cos it made them look bad.

maybe not exactly what happened, but
theres more to this than we know.
