Is Bush a Lunatic?

By Molly Ivins, AlterNet. Posted May 17, 2006.

Insane immigration policies, a new $70 billion tax cut for the rich, and increasing ineptitude in Iraq all indicate that this administration has lost its marbles.

I hate to raise such an ugly possibility, but have you considered lunacy as an explanation? Craziness would make a certain amount of sense.

I mean, you announce you are going to militarize the Mexican border, but you assure the president of Mexico you are not militarizing the border. You announce you are sending the National Guard, but then you assure everyone it's not very many soldiers and just for a little while.

Militarizing the border is a totally terrible idea. Do we have a State Department? Are they sentient? How much do you want to infuriate Mexico when it's sitting on quite a bit of oil? Bush knows what the most likely outcome of this move will be. He was governor during the political firestorm that ensued when a Marine taking part in anti-drug patrols on the border shot and killed Esequiel Hernandez, an innocent goat-herder from Redford, Texas.

That's the definition of crazy -- repeatedly doing the same thing and expecting a different result.

I suppose politics could explain it, too. It's quite possible that lunacy and politics are closely related. It's still damned hard cheese for the Guard, though. The Guard is heavily deployed in Iraq, currently 20 percent of those serving, down from 40 percent last year. Some soldiers are sent back for multiple tours. Lt. Gen. James Helmly, head of the Army Reserve, said the Reserve is rapidly degenerating into "a broken force" and is "in grave danger of being unable to meet other operational requirements."

Happy hurricane season to you, too. The Guard is also short on equipment and falling short on recruiting goals. But right-wingers are very unhappy with Bush right now, and this is a strong, red-meat gesture that will make them happy, even if it does nothing to shut down the border.

You want to shut down illegal immigration? You want to use the military as police? Make it illegal to hire undocumented workers and put the National Guard into enforcing that. Then rewrite NAFTA and invest in Mexico.

Meanwhile, further proof that the entire party is cuckoo comes to us with the passage of another $70 billion tax cut for the rich. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities says the average middle-income household will get a $20 tax cut, while those making more than $1 million a year will get nearly $42,000.

The Washington Post editorialized, "Budgetary dishonesty, distributional unfairness, fiscal irresponsibility -- by now the words are so familiar, it can be hard to appreciate how damaging this fiscal course will be."

Both President Bush and Veep Cheney are still going around claiming if you cut taxes, your tax revenues increase. No, they don't. Now we're just in whackoville. It's not true. Their own economists tell them it's not true, but they go about claiming it is with the same desperate tenacity they clung to false tales of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. How pathetic.

Speaking of lunacy, the saddest report from Iraq is that American soldiers showing signs of psychological distress and depression are being kept on active duty, increasing the risk of suicide. The Hartford Courant reports that even soldiers who have already been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress syndrome are kept on duty. This has led to an increase in the suicide rate -- 22 soldiers in 2005. And as I have reported before, the military is unprepared to deal with the flood of head cases coming back from Iraq. How many ways can we mistreat our own soldiers, while the right makes this elaborate show of devotion to "the troops"?

The consistent pattern that runs through all these problems is the failure to distinguish fantasy from reality. Mexican immigrants keep crossing the border because they can get jobs here -- and most of those jobs are provided by companies whose CEOs support George W. Bush. That's where he can have an impact on the problem, should he choose to do so.

The $70 billion tax cut is part of a continuing right-wing fantasy going back to the Laffer Curve. Of course, clinging to demonstrably false economic precepts is understandable when you benefit from them, but at some point reality does intervene.

As for the Iraq fantasy and those who pushed it on a reluctant country through lies, disinformation and bending intelligence -- isn't there a law against that?

Spain already tried militarizing the border and it doesn´t work

Spain already tried sending the army to stop illegal immigration at Melilla (Moroccan border). (Fortunately, in the case of Spain, is was only for a short time). It doesn´t work. Thousands of Africans are finding new routes to get into Europe. One of the most popular of late is by sea, from Senegal to the Canary Islands. Moreover, many arrive with no passports, no identification -- where can they be repatriated to, if there´s no way of knowing where they´re from?

I made this comment on AlterNet yesterday but I suppose it begs repeating: It is no secret that the president of the United States is an idiot - no question about it. It's also no particular strech to conclude that he's arrogant, selfish and ignorant; These aren't state secrets, folks. These are matters of fact, all part of the public record - Placed there by the First Fool himself. One thing I've suspected all along that is finally being talked about publicly is the undeniable fact that George W. Bush is as crazy as a bed bug.

If you ever get the chance, read "Bush On The Couch" by Dr. Justin Frank. The good doctor makes a very convincing case. As a kid, little Dubya liked to stuff firecrackers down the throats of defenceless froggies and watch in glee as the poor little darlings exploded. Isn't that cute? The one problem with this little gem of childhood memories is the fact that excessive, needless cruelty in childhood to small animals is a text book sign of severe mental ilness. It is a common trait that most serial killers share. Is it unfair to compare George W. Bush to Ted Bundy. It certainly is - TO TED BUNDY! After all, he only left nineteen bodies in his wake.

We're WAY the hell past the point where we should be merely concerned. We actually passed that point the day he announced his candidacy six years ago. The time has come where we should all be frightened to death of the fact that this fucking maniac is sitting in the oval office in THE WHITE HOUSE (sorry, I can't do italics) HURLING THIS COUNTRY AND THE ENITRE PLANET TOWARD WORLD WAR THREE!!! (Does that sound angry enough?) He and that other hideous piece of shit, Dick Cheney, have got to be removed from office, tried and imprisoned for their crimes aganst humanity as soon as humanly possible. That's why it is so important to support the democrats across the board in November. Yes, yes, I know they're not much but they're all we've got. The GOP has slit the throats of the poor and the middle class and has literally pissed on the constitution. That party should be completely and utterly destroyed. They should never be allowed to hold ANY position of power ever again.

We all have to make damn good and sure that George W. Bush is the last republican president.

Pray for peace.

I pine for the days when the USSR was a credible threat an the military, and those who were militaristic, had a worthy target for their perverse passion for Assured Mutual Destruction. But when that threat disappeared the Military/Industrial Machine did not have the humanity to look inwards and find what diplomacy, tolerance and understanding was regarding other countries on this planet. It kept on going, with a seemingly accelerated pace, on a mission to find another enemy or enemies. There was no greater gift to those behind this machine than the events of 9/11. Bush is, from my point of view, just a front man who could conceal the real intent in this inexorable path for military domination of the rest of the world. His failure only represents the failure of the corporate/military America. But now this machine is turning towards those who supported and nurished it, especially its own citizens. To me this was predictable. In the end, however, it is important that the majority of this country who approved of Bush for many years ignoring truth after truth about the reality of incompetence and emptiness of the administrations policies, reconsider their judgment. So if Bush is a lunactic then there are millions of fellow lunatics in this country. Forget Bush, every person who did not consider him a liar immediatley after the invasion of Iraq needs to ponder their own denial of the truth, why they refused to listen and what they are personally going to do from here on out.

It just doesn't get any better, does it? This President is BAD LUCK for America and the World. Do the research, everything Bush has done, failed. And things are continuing down that road with such an idiot as President.

When will people start to wake up? It's time to end the corruption, corporate control of political leaders, oppressive policies worldwide and more. It's truly time for a change in this country. I am so damn mad that I could cry.

The method to his madness
Posted by: Moonray on May 17, 2006 3:31 AM

G.W. Bush's presidency is the result of special-interest capitalism taken to its illogical conclusions. Contrary to what most of us believe, Bush's policies have been very successful. It's just that they have been successful mainly for the small fraction of our population that is rich and getting richer.

For the rest of us, not so much.

What's worse is, that small wealthy elite has taken control of our elective process. They run the country and, no matter who runs for Congress or president, these powerful folks can't lose, simply because they decide who gets nominated by both parties for most of those races.

Let's face it: We don't have much choice when voting for who makes national policy. The days of the idealistic young upstart winning a presidential election are long gone, if they ever existed. (Can anyone remember an idealistic young upstart winning a presidential election? Maybe Jimmy Carter, and we all know how that ended.)

That's why our breathless excitement over politics is so amusing, considering the historical context. We are Charlie Brown forever trying to kick the political football, and the corporate elite is the cynical Lucy, who yanks it away every time -- and always wins the game despite her duplicity.

Until we make some fundamental changes in the way our country is run -- which probably will require rewriting the Constitution -- nothing much will change. And people such as G.W. Bush will continue to call the shots.

Molly is so funny and so correct. The USA is losing status at a rapid rate because of all the crazies in DC. It's as if they have been programmed to destroy USA influence throughout the world as fast as they possibly can. Impeach these jerks that are full of quirks. Replace the fruit loops with human beings who know what to do and when to do it to make the USA a great democracy instead of the stumblebum that it is rapidly becoming.

Impeach.
Impeach.
Impeach.

We need to get this crazy monkey and his co-fools off the world's back before we can start moving in any healthy direction. We have so much to repair and return and restore. So much needs to be created but like the Katrina aftermath, there is a lot of cleaning up to do.

We can still accomplish what needs to be done can't we?

Or are we going to live out the sick fantasy of destruction and end -of-the-world (wink-wink) rapture. I say bye-bye to them and bye-bye to that! It is such a sick and tired old fantasy of theirs, it holds nothing for the rest of us. They have had too much of our time. We don't want wars, we don't want walls, we don't want global dominance, destruction of our planet home, domination by the rich, corporatocracy. These lies have cost us dearly.

However, what we replace this mockery of a government with is vital to our continuing existence on this planet. The stakes are high. We need to have our best dreams realized, not these stale old glory stories of domination. We need new religions, new actions toward sustainability, inclusion, balance and peace. This fool and his cronies, who stole their way to power have no vision, they are the embodiment of greed.

Crazy is as crazy does. Bush and his thieves seems crazy to me too.

Molly! -- dear!

Not a word about Posse Comitatus?!

This has been probably the biggest sticking point against militarizing der Fatherland since the civil rights movement got underway! This law forbids the use of military forces for law enforcement: Thou shalt not use thine soldiers as police officers.

This type of action is one of the most blatant hallmarks of the dictatorship, and it does not surprise me in the least bit that Bush is willing to completely disregard yet another linchpin of the free state, as appalling as his action is.

FDR had an amnesty program around 1936 so that his administration could get a handle on how many people were in the country. He wanted to start Social Security, and he needed an accurate count. We had another amnesty program a few years ago, and I am sure we will continue to have them as the years roll on.

This morning a radio report quoted growers in a particular part of the U.S. in saying that they don't want a guest worker program as there are minimum wage rates connected with such a program. Some of them already use guest workers, and they will continue to do so. They find that guest workers are more productive and the flow of quality labor is more predictable and stable. However, quite a percentage were quoted as saying that it costs them 25% more to use guest workers, and they prefer to continue to illegals workers.

The point is that the reason we will continue to have an illegal alien "problem" is that many company owners, be they agricultural or industrial, will continue to hire people whose documentation, if they have any, is questionable. So, we don't have an illegal alien problem; we have a CEO hiring illegal aliens problem.

I would also like to ask the leaders of the antianmnesty group how the first member of their family, who entered this country, got here. Hmm, perhaps these people should not be throwing the first stone.

.... nor that super Alkie, Cheney, then who and are they smart and if so, they why is this happening??? What is the "REAL" agenda???

That question just keeps popping up. I think there is a nefarious agenda associated with all of this. Kill, maim, mentally distress all of our young people in Iraq and you have what back home???? No one to defend the people of this country against "Domestic" enemies.

A survey was done by the military a few years ago and they asked the military members if ordered would they fire on Americans? The majority (69%) said "NO" they would not.

Could that be what this is all about??? Would that explain the lack of flack jackets for 3 years and no armoured Humvees for years??? Now the ones that are armoured due to our screaming about it don't have armour near the foot pedals of the vehicles so they are being maimed with limbs torn off.

They won't be a problem if something nefarious happens in our country to our citizens.

Yes bush is mad and that should make us very scared.
One just has to watch the last days of Hitler to see what's coming. Before bush will own-up to his mistakes and be held accountable he'll push all the atomic buttons he can get his hands on. Believe this - he's THAT crazy!
Our only hope is that when the time comes the generals refuse to carry out his orders. Other than that we're toast. These are very scary times. The more opposition bush receives the more he'll believe he's surrounded by traitors and they too will become "the enemy". Remember, "You're either with us or against us."? So as resistance mounts so does g.w. bush's madness.

I thought that was a given. Must be a rhetorical question . .

It has taken the deaths of more than 2k US soldiers and tens of thousands of civilian dead in Iraq, threats of nuking Iran and the criminal bungling of one of our nation's worst natural disasters to confirm this to most Americans.

For many killing thousands of his "own" people on 9/11 was enough to confirm that.

When I was a young man, America was a word that conjured up feelings of hope and promise and envy in the world at large. America was a place of refuge from tyranny, a place of individual rights and the opportunity to have a voice in one's own future. Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy all heroes of the American past. All leaders of a growing example to the world of the possibility that self determination and self governance were not only possible, but were the very essence of what freedom comprised. The American ideal reigned supreme for several decades, and the world was a better place for it. Conservatives, Liberals, Centrists all co-existed in a tapestry of free political thought and America was a beacon to the world. What evil has the Bush administration wrought upon this nation? Thinking back on my life over the past 63 years, I see the complete annihalation of all that we fought and died for in the making of a great democracy. If ever there were a moment in time when the citizens of this country must take matters in their own hands and literally throw the bums out of office, it is now! Impeach, Imprison and renew the promise that once was.

Yeah Molly, it is truly crazy, but I think we are dealing with a modern trio of national treasury burglars that put Billy the Kid, Butch and Sundance to shame. Yes, I am saying George, Dick and Rummy are taking this nation for all they can and then hitting the trail.

"Ka Ching" is the White House sound of music in my opinion and our great, great grand children will have to pay it all back, that is if humanity still exists on this abused planet.

War Criminals

While it is obvious that the whole Bush administration is composed of war criminals the complicity of the United States Congress and both political parties in the horror that is taking place in Iraq should be noted. When the democratically elected president of Iran was overthrown by Norman Schwartzkoff’s father Norman senior in less than three weeks back in 1953 and replaced it by a dictatorship of the Shah; it set in motion the events that as led to this criminal enterprise. Mossadegq was about to nationalize Iranian oil owned by British Petroleum. The overthrow of the Shah three years later and the ensuing war between Iran and Iraq was funded by US taxpayers and Saddam Hussein was given poison gas, anthrax, sarin, planes and attack helicopters. This war killed more people than any war since WWII. When our ally Saddam Hussein attacked Kuwait Norman Schwartzoff Junior led the first gulf war leaving Saddam in power. Another junior named George Bush shocked the world with a sudden attack on Iraq appropriately named “Shock and awe” and has led to a prolonged military occupation that has earned all Americans the disgust of the people of the world.
This is only a thumbnail sketch but you know the rest. . . Depleted uranium shells, white phosphorus grenades, and the destruction of the cradle of civilization. While our troops are being whittled away by roadside bombs we are angry about the high price of gasoline that we pour into our mammoth automobiles. “Stay the course”, “don’t cut and run”, “kill the insurgents”--”the constitution is only a piece of paper”. We maintain that the illegal immigrants are criminals and should be treated that way. NAFTA had nothing to do with everyone wanting to get out of Mexico. Have we become callous criminal bastards? Are we so dominated by giant corporations that we can’t even think rationally?

Everyone who does not do something to stop this insane occupation of Iraq is a war criminal. You don’t know the truth because of the corporate media? Then you are stupid criminals as well. We already have 3,000,000 Americans in prison--most of them for smoking pot. Do you imagine that the fascists running this country will not build concentration camps? They have legalized torture, they hold hundreds in Guantanamo without a trial, and every one of us has petrochemical poisons in our blood. Global warming threatens us with unimaginable natural disasters but we still sell our souls to the oil companies that have caused them. Put in a new wall to wall carpet and do something to get rid of the tons of junk you have been sold that fills your garage. You are a consumer and the corporations look at you the same as a Blackfoot, or a Sioux looked at a buffalo. Only you are willing prey. You are like the indigenous tribes that sold their hunting grounds for trinkets.

That:
We no longer have a government
We have the United Corporations of America.
They treat the Sheeple as a resource
and
Will do with them, as they please
King George II
Is just a figure head
He is a shrude mouth piece
The Stupid face they put on Treason
He disarms everyone with his BU__! SH__!
The Corporate Parisites
Want to know everything about you
They are spying on everyone
Mostly their own operatives
And
Their Political enemies.
And hide behind the curtains
It’s all for me and none for you
And what are you gonna do about it
As Dick The Heartless Says
Funk You!!!
They are preparing Americas for renewal
They have taken over the Church
They have operatives in all the media
They run all the Corporations
They have control of your TV set
They count the votes
No use in crying

Shut it down
It’s Now or Never!
After the robots run everything it will be too late
Stop it now
It’s:

So can we.

Bush continues to rail against us! The dynamic decider has more holes in his thinking than waffles. Everytime one of his incredibly dangerous and treasonous actions is outed, he claims the secrecy is in th country's best interest! We, however, the thinking masses in the real world, understand more than he knows. We know that by living in his corporate bubble, trying to earn his way into a position of power in the new century global order, he is dropping his drawers and relieving himself of every obligation to this Country, it's constitution and the rights of those he has sworn to lead. We can keep talking, but is there an honest politician left in Washington who will hear us? Do we have to march in the streets? We should, you know. Millions of us should mass at Dubya's front door, each one with a bull horn. Now, that's a business we can support! Maybe we could be heard then!

From Molly's article:
"Do we have a State Department? Are they sentient?"

The answer? Yes, and no – because it is run (excuse me, "headed up") by Condoleeza Rice, the Queen of Failing Upward and poster girl for the inadequacy of a PhD. After all, she left Stanford under "unknown" circumstances, and was deeply involved with the disastrous pack of lies about WMD that helped sink the U.S. into the bloody quagmire in Iraq. Judging by her crackerjack record thus far, I would expect the State Department to be brain-dead – like its Secretary.

lunacy...? incompetence...? ya know, i would actually PREFER either of those two explanations for the astoundingly destructive path bush and his criminal compadres have followed since 20 january 2001... either of them would at least provide some measure of empathy for the man... sadly, in my opinion, neither of them are accurate...

bush and his buds are astoundingly COMPETENT and eminently RATIONAL in their behavior but you have to put it in the right frame... and that frame would be, you may ask...? first and foremost, divest yourself of any notion that there a desire to act for the good of the country... secondly, repeat to yourself as many times as necessary to have it sink in: money, power, money, power, power, money, money... third, think of everything in your life that has ever caused you fear... think of the times you were most terrified... continue to think of those times until you have worked yourself into a state, repeating "money and power" all the while... then, take another look at the track record of the bush administration to date... most of the pieces will quickly fall into place...

When they come home from Iraq, I'm sure all those National Guard soldiers are going to be thrilled to finally see their homes and families – for a couple of days, on their way down to another friggin' desert on another indefinite, miserable assignment.

And what will our now under-equipped, under-manned, under-rested Guard do when they get there? They cannot operate militarily without violating Posse Comitatus, so they're going to be carrying out administrative duties – duties that could be done by civilians. Of course, you'd have to PAY civilians a decent wage, something more than we pay the Guard. So, possibly, this move by Bush, beside being a cheap political ploy, is just another move to "insource" cheap labor, this time using our own military. (By the way; why aren't we increasing the size of the Border Patrol? Oh, yeah...we'd have to PAY them!!) Our business-school underachiever president is nothing if not consistant.

Or –– are our Guard troops going to end up actively enforcing border control under the guise of "being attacked" during their very visible presence? If so, stand by for another mess, insourced from the one overseas.

Yes of course Bush is mad, along with all his Greedy Gekko (corporate politician) buddies around the world. All tyrants are insane! But, there's method in their madness and that madness began in their early years of life, when their "Christian" parents and educators systematically psychologically terrorised them. That's why they are so hel-bent on terrorising the rest of us. Give into that reign of terror and you may as well lie down and die!

Let's Install Sanity

Molly:

I agree with most of what you say. However, being critical without offering a plan gains very little. I recommend a plan of peace. Let's each begin by acquiring inner peace. That starts by forgiving ourselves for being egos, and recognize that we are all children of the benign creator; live our highest light or wisdom. In the meantime, living our highest light, we divest ourselves of the present administration through peaceful means, develop a sane way of electing our politicians, and each peaceful person monitor our politicians for characteristics contributing to peace.

Our present method of electing our governing officials is as insane as our present government. Sanity can replace insanity as we each become at peace with ourselves. It all begins with each individual.

Let me suggest, that each taxpayer be assessed $20 for the political campaign fund. This is distributed to the candidates qualifying for the political campaign. They are not allowed to use any of their own finances or accept any private money.

Lobbiest will be limited in their access to legislators. No gifts, no trips, lunches, dinners or entertainment is allowed. They are allowed their influence to be expressed only in the chambers of the legislature.

This will put the constituency of each legislator back in control to give much more honest representation. This process will be used to elect the executive branch as well. This would deemphasize the party structure as well leading to wider debate in our governing process. Also, this would give each citizen a greater role encouraging a wider range of electorate. In summary, we must take money and its influence out of the governmental process.

The events and circumstances as you pointed out is shocking. It is insane. It is hard to believe that sanity ever existed. But the world can be saved and the U.S. can become a world leader in a peaceful world if we change our way of financing and influence over congress and the executive branch. Inner peace would also spread much more rappidly.

Madness in the Citadel!

The United States of America doesn't belong to Americans for quite some time now. It has been 'chosen' to be the fortress citadel for the wealthy of the world. Armed to the teeth and spending larger fortunes on weapons each year to subdue anyone who does not bow to international banking and the selected entrepreneurs the bankers choose to finance to enhance their 'enlightened' status, and further still the bankers might. We are less than 5 percent of the world population; of it, less than half bothers to vote, and since we now have officers (s)elected with less votes than the winning candidate, it leaves us with about 1% of the world's people choosing the dude who rules the circus. Can you imagine to how much "adjusting" by the media we have been subject to over the years so that we did not stray from the plan? And now that there is the internet and the bloggers and truthout and alternet and empireburlesque et al, and the big massive media papers and TV are not that effective, they bring out Diebold and ... the other one voting machine company, both created by a couple of brothers!- Coincidence??? Sure!, just as Rupert Murdoch supporting Hilary Clinton, our own iron lady. Re-elect Gore!(but no Lieberman, please!)

...when you factor in selfishness, greed, secrecy, power with a dash of religious fanaticism, it all makes perfect sense.

What a mess the country's in lately... and it's getting worse. Every time I read that the "economy" is going strong, I look around and I don't see the middle class people going anywhere but backward financially. Businesses owned by large corporations seem to be doing very well indeed. I'm starting to think that when the gov't says the word "economy" they're referring to Big Businesses and the people who own them.

Here in MT, the gas price run up is killing the waitresses, retail clerks, etc. They weren't making enough in the first place to have any financial reserve to absorb that hit. Gas price goes up this high? Something essential's gotta give.

Meanwhile down in Big Sky, there's a subdivision where you have to produce a financial statement of over $2 million in net worth or you can't even buy a lot in it. Talking to some of the tradespeople working on these houses, it's the 5th and 6th home for most of the buyers.

Thanks, Dubya. I see the pattern, and it's not crazy at all.

Alcoholism is a disease of the spirit and brain. Impaired thinking (cognitive distortions), grandiosity, rigidity, isolation, secretiveness, arrogance, denial with major negative consequences for yourself and/or others is part of the definition of alcoholic behavior and thinking. Bush is not in recovery; he is a dry drunk. And, he is reaping the consequences of his disease with us paying the ultimate price...our civil liberties and safety. Laura? She is the co-dependent mother-figure who has been the caretaker in denial.

the progressive fantasy that this is deviance/abnormality
Posted by: Michelle on May 17, 2006 11:26 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
There are many reasons why I (who am well to the left of liberal) do not identify as "progressive." This delusion of deviance is one of them.

Bush is the product of the system we live in. He is one manifestation. There are/have been/will be others, different variations but same underlying function. The madness is in the system itself, not in this administration.

There is this progressive delusion, a theme, a -- what do they call it, a "frame" -- in which progressives attribute system-produced insanity to specific instances of deviation from the ideals of the United States. So here Molly Ivins says Bush is insane. No. He is a product of an insane system, not a deviation from a basically good system. There is a difference.

Some posters have already pointed this out, at least at the material/economic level; I think it goes even deeper than that.

Consider the real agenda

The real agenda is accumulate global wealth and power for the Bush family and their friends, no more or less. They do not care about anything else. They have no respect for what we respect and value, such as democracy, nature, compassion, kindness -- those are just slick words to attain the power and wealth goal at any cost -- which is always to you and me, not them. They had a team of 400 of the best lawyers and friends on the Supreme Court to usurp the office when Gore had the votes. Did you see Bush as doing the honorable and democratic thing??? Duh!!! And anyone expects something different??? Remember his grandfather was in Congress, his father was in Congress and then the Vice-President and eventually the President; he grew up a privileged kid with anything he wanted and got his way in everything. Remember the drugs and the disappearance of his police record, his military experience??? He thinks this nation is his to do with as he pleases as the "decider" / dictator. So why is anyone surprised??? Perhaps besides being 35 years old, a presidential candidate should have a multi-partisan panel of psychiatrists examine the next president and add sanity to the requirements listed in the U.S. Constitution, if we still have one in the next year. Troops on our soil may just be an open door for a foot to slide in for martial law. We have seen so much of the unthinkable happen, is this so extreme a thought? The guy is dangerous, more so than his family friend Osama Bin Ladin.

You can call this mental illness. Or, you can call it faith. They come to similar conclusions employing similar methods.

Actually, if your world view differs significantly from the majority's and is not reality based to the extent that it causes you to live much less effectively and with more unhappiness, you may be psychotic and suffering from delusions, hallucinations or both.

The insanity behind the insanity...

Bush has simply done a wonderful job of demonstrating the real insanity behind the insanity: How rational is it to expect people who consider "good government" to be a contradiction in terms to do a good job running one? How insane is it to give them the job in the first place? Historically it has always been disastrous for the vast majority.

We've lived in la-la-land since 1980. My grandfather predicted that if Reagan won we would see soup lines again. He did, and we're not far away from lining up now. From a historical perspective, none of this should really have been a surprise to any of us.

Why can't we learn from history? If and after we survive and recover, a top priority should then be to seek ways to prevent this from happening again, a mere generation or two down the road.

I don't think Bush is in charge of diddly squat in this administration, he's too stupid. A failed businessman-turned-politician isn't the kind of person who knows anything about economics. His tax cuts are merely "dividends" for his major campaign contributors. As far as foreign policy goes, the Bush Cabal has done exactly what it said it would do from 9/11 on.

Maybe if every SUV came with a sticker that says "by purchasing this vehicle, you are contributing to the corruption in mexico and causing another 2 dozen people to migrate from there to here where they will take your job or your neighbors job...."

This is why I am so vehemently against all advertising. It's basically all bad. They never say anything about how their products strengthen our dependence on foreign oil and empower a disgustingly powerful elite ruling class both here and even moreso down in mexico and other oil exporting countries. It's all just a bunch of lies and now we've become so entrenched in that system ... there's no way to deal with it except to self destruct.

This country and mexico will become one in the same. A small powerful wealthy elite ruling class, and a huge poor working class.

And boring.

"Bush sucks." She should just write that and save us the time. She rarely writes something that advances discussion. She isn't even a standout writer. She writes the same old shit every week, providing no unique viewpoint.

I agree Bush sucks. But so do the Dems. If you look at the actual voting records, the Dems vote the same way on almost all the major issues. Focusing only on Bush allows the Democrats to get away with it, ensuring that there will ALWAYS be a rightwing party in control.

Molly Ivins is almost as predictable and sophomoric as Maureen Dowd.

Don't you think this is a ploy to reintroduce the Draft? The military has long wanted more soldiers. They told Bush in 2003 they were short soldier's and he ignored their pleas. But with our army over-extended of course they will introduce the Draft. Then you will see some real activism in this country!

Is the Pope Catholic? Of course he's a lunatic. But the people that helped him steal an election TWICE while nobody in the National Media seemed to think it was a worthwhile story simply ignored the fact and got on with reports of a rosy economy and how we were helping the Iraqis get Democracy. All I can think of is Bugs Bunny ridiculing Elmer Fudd in the old cartoons which they don't show anymore. one is left to question 'Just how damn dumb are Americans?' Write the answer on a poster board, tack it to a stick, leave it on the side of the road and see who answers. How many ways can you say 'We're screwed?'

Molls, I don't think B2 is bonkers but it does unnerve me to see him looking so content while Iraq burns. The dead-ratio in this sort of conflict looks to be around 100:1 them to us (based on Vietnam data and newer bomb yields). This puts Iraqi killed at close to 300,000. Injured and maimed run around ten times the number of kills these days, leaving 3 million Iraqis in this category. Our own people killed or injured probably total over 30K at this juncture. I'd like to see "Hardball" host Matthews showing some signs of life on this subject.
As for Mexico, the obvious remedy is to repeat the program carried out in the 1840's: simply occupy and appropriate Northern Mexico. What should we name the new US State south of Texas?

I just have one simple question. How is it that after all the shit this administration has pulled on us and there has been no impeachment yet, but Clinton lied about a blowjob and the country was one step away from lynching him? It really is amazing. Mind-blowing. Now my state I can understand why. Mainly because Indiana is filled with moronic Republican sheep. Please tell me there are people out there who agree! It's like I'm living in the seventh level of Neo-Con Hell!!

The Big Picture

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The big picture is finally beginning to take shape. The American people so pissed off after 9/11 decided they would follow anyone who promised to "get back" at the terrorists. The Neo-cons in Washington rubbed their hand in glee and happily decided to use 9/11 as an opportunity to put a plan into effect that they had long envisaged, to dominate the Middle East and secure its oil supply.

Fortunately or unfortunately as some would say their own arrogance and incompetence botched the "liberation" of the Iraqi oil supply and they now find themselves in an awful pickle.

However the American people are mostly to blame. You watched from the sidelines as your country invaded another with little warrant, you watched from the sidelines as an obviously dim and docile president was played like a puppet by his masters, and you were stupid enough to vote him back into office the second time around even after it was clear to the rest of the world what was going on.

Americans are wonderful people and you have a wonderful country over there but you let your anger of 9/11 cloud your judgment, you let a moron president lead you into a war that was neither necessary nor winnable. You the people are to blame. Patriotism is a wonderful thing, its a pity your leaders are using it against you.

Power, greed, and usury, are insane I would agree. But the 'real deal', is this President is a product of elitists and Nazi sympathesizers. Don't forget Prestcott Bush helped to bankroll the Nazis and Hitler himself, along with being charged for treason or more specifically, 'trading with the enemy'. So, why should it surprise anyone, that foreign interests have more value than the people this crowd serves. Hey the law is the limit, but what most don't understand, total lawlessness knows no bounds. Welcome to the new NeoCon Nation, controlled by the CIA, and directed by those bearing 'the mark of the beast'. What will be the limit of what people are willing to ignore or condone?

Bush has to be a member of Al-Quaeda. He hasn't looked very hard to find Osama Bin Hidin, he redirected everyone's attention to this mess in Iraq, he won't come up with a decent plan to control our borders, he's broken more laws than the 9/11 bombers, and he's trying to destroy America politically and economically from within. Dubya is Osama's secret weapon of mass destruction!

In addition to a lack of empathy apparent in cruelty to animals the learning disabled often have complications which go beyond academic problems. They also have a psychosocial profile in which they are unable to connect their own behavior toward others with the practical or emotional responses of their victim.
As a result, they constantly see themselves as victims of reflexive behaviors despite their aggression toward others. In addition, they are unable to remember multiple concepts when drawing a conclusion or considering an array of data in decision-making. They may fail to make connections between concepts, and may be delighted and surprised when a connection is made. For instance, Bush recently told the public that oil prices have gone up, "...and gasoline is MADE of oil!!!" So that went up, too.
For all these reasons they may be unable to evalutate or check their decisions or goals as they lose track of the facts or reasons for making the decision. They may fail to properly interpret nonverbal social cues. It is bad to have A Decider and Diplomat in Chief with this type of handicapping problem. Gut instinct is what's left.
I had heard in the 80's that GHWB had an LD child. Guess who?

I really think they are sociopaths at the least. When you watch Bush walk on stage you wonder who tells him if it is a serious speech or a "smiley face" speech. You know the smile speeches are most disturbing because he is talking serious stuff but they don't want the people to think it is bad news so he smiles. He also reminds me of George Burns who used to start singing a song about one thing and then the chorus was another whole song!.
I can't tell if Bush is a wind-up toy, a muppet, or wired for action. I figure they won't be able to let him live and they have to control how he dies because they don't want anyone to find the "black box". Now that's a way to win an election - and start another war...."President killed by Iranian, Atom bomb on the way!"

It has to be Bushland. It's a vast wasteland except for some useless vegetation. A great place to build Dubya's presidential hut. Can't be a library, he's not literate enough to earn it. It will be a great place for the whole administration to rot away in retirement. We can pay their pensions in pesos. Cheney won't need a pension very long. That heartless bastard has to have another heart attack sooner or later. Somebody will have to wake Dubya and tell him "Dick is dead" and he'll use his standard answer "Laura's been saying that for years". They could all drink the water and poop all over Bushland, kinda like they're doing to this country now. (My apologies to Triumph the Insult Comic Dog)

Giant

You must be familiar with the George Steven's film Giant. Though it's a bit dated, I find it worth watching about once every year or 2 and now have a copy on DVD. Yes, I was born in Texas but immigrated from the right to work for less state to find a better paying job. This was just before Anne Richards lost hers.

Though slow to develop, a Steven's trade mark, with Mercedes Mc Cambridge, Elizabeth Taylor, Sal Mineo, Rock Hudson, James Dean and Dennis Hopper this film is still amazing to watch, especially to redsicover, as the state grows in the middle part of the 20th century, which characters end up gaining or losing our sympathies. Granted this is mythology and not history.

Either Bush has never seen this film, or he likes to think of himself as James Dean at his worse. Now, who in the U.S. is ready to take on the Rock Hudson role in this allegory?

that part of alternet's posting policy is:
"racist, sexist or other discriminatory or hateful language" will not be tolerated.

Yet, it seems that nobody is questioning how absolutely offensive this post is to psychiatric survivors and people who suffer or have suffered from mental health problems. For sure, there are some "lunatics" who are racist jackasses, but most are not, and whether they are or not has nothing to do with their mental health status. Many of us crazies will be adversely affected by Bush's policies both as people from all walks of life and ethnic backgrounds and specifically because of our deviance.

As much as the posters here hate Bushie Jr., I haven't read anything that's critical enough! The fact is that Bushie Jr. started a war for purely personal reasons. That obviously shows his psychopathology, but it's not an excuse. Think of the damage he's done. He should be tried for treason and war crimes and be hanged just like the Nazis in Nuremberg. Good luck finding a Democrat, 90% of whom are politically cowards and wimps, to advocate this.

Coming from outside the U.S. as I do it is hard to believe that so many Americans still support Bush and his maniacal belief that "The American Way" should be enforced on the rest of the world. You believe that you are the land of the free. You are in one of the most opressive regimes the world has seen. The USSR stopped spying on its own population after "Glasnost". How many countries spy on tens of millions of its own people? The USA comes out in front. How many deaths & false indefinite imprisonments does it take to make you realise that you are not only in the grips of a madman but you are actually in the hands of several madmen and a madwoman. Maybe she is just very clever and self serving. They say that a country gets the government it deserves. Is this true? Do you deserve bush and his fellow lunatics? Look what he has done. He has dragged you into a war to prove he is better than his father and for the glorification of Christianity (reminiscent of the crusades). He has escalated the price of oil (isn't it amazing that some of his political backers and friends are involved in oil companies that are making huge profits out of it). He has trampled on all of your basic human rights in the name of "The Patriot Act". Think about the wording of that and for gods sake read 1984 by George Orwell. It's ok that he has killed so many Iraqis because they are godless heathens & besides they are just towel heads. Are you old enough to remember the Vietcong being called "Charlie" and "Gooks"? The towel heads are totally devoted to their country and you aren't. YOU WILL LOSE!!!!!
No I'm not an Arab. No I don't believe in their cause or way of life. I live in Australia. We are making the same mistakes as you. I can see the parallels with Vietnam.
Those who refuse to learn from history are destined to repeat its mistakes. I strongly suspect that George Bush would be struggling to learn anything & his minders with their vested interests will make sure that there is no way he will ever make a sensible decision for either America or the rest of the world. After all. The majority of the soldiers in Iraq are only "white trash" or expendable "African Americans"

Read the book of Daniel, the second part. Daniel was a psychic, or on drugs, but very good at interpreting dreams of kings. The 10 'horns' are US Presidents. Out of the 10 came a smaller 'horn' and three 'horns.' Make note of the "1000 days plus 195 days" when Impeachment begins and 1000 days plus 315 day" when it is over. Then begins the fun when the real evil one takes over, our VP.
Read it in Daniel. Read it several times because the old language takes awhile to decipher. My day numbers are from memory but close enough for you to go check it out for yourself.

It is time to call this habit of mind for what it is, prejudice against disabled people. There is nothing about insanity to make a point here.

If someone is insane what makes you think calling them that with prejudice and malice and anger does anything? You have a treatment for distress that works using these tools?

This is anti-disabled bigotry. Stop it now.

When I was a young man all of my peers knew who the villian was - he was the guy that talked to God, God talked to him, and he was doing what God commanded him to do.

If that sounds like President George Bush, then he has to be insane. President Bush keeps telling us that God wants all nations to be free and he is going to free all nations. The question is why nobody has ever challenged his words?

Indeed, you can click on Project for a New American Century and find the same sentiments. It is also an eye-opener to see the membership listing. Yet, most Americans have never heard of this organization.

Finally, as a military veteran, I would like to defend the French people. The French support American servicemen and women through the finest overseas United Service Organization (USO - yes, that USO). What I find unique about their continuing support is there are no American military installations in France. They do so out of love for Americans in uniform who came to their aid during World War II. So let's cut the French some slack!
