The search for a unifying progressive theme continues …

Over at TomPaine, my friend Paul Waldman throws his two cents into the endless debate about what the left's grand unifying theme should be.
Waldman says we should embrace a simple message: we're all in it together. Not only does it define our beliefs, but it also contrasts with the right's belief that each of us is in it for ourselves, struggling through a Hobbesian world where life is cold, brutal and short.
It's a good framework to hang all sorts of progressive economic policies; it fits with progressive taxation, a living wage, pension security and universal healthcare -- all the good things we should be talking about. And, as Waldman says, it does it without evoking the idea of personal sacrifice.
Personally, I'm dubious that the left can ever adopt a consistent message -- we don't tend to walk in lock-step on anything. But give it a read and throw in your own two cents.
