Plan B and imaginary teen sex cults

FDA FOAF-lore.

Why can't American women have the emergency contraceptive Plan B over-the-counter? Three words: "Teen sex cults." Actually, four words: "Mythical teen sex cults."

A group of New York women is suing the FDA for Plan B, OTC. Here's one of the documents that came up in discovery:
In the memo released by the FDA, Dr. Curtis Rosebraugh, an agency medical officer, wrote: “As an example, she [deputy operations commissioner Woodcock] stated that we could not anticipate, or prevent extreme promiscuous behaviors such as the medication taking on an ‘urban legend’ status that would lead adolescents to form sex-based cults centered around the use of Plan B.” [Newsweek]

...and smoking leads to pregnancy

There are no comments, because there's just nothing you can say to such idiotic thinking. If these people applied half of their energy to real, as opposed to imaginary, scenarios, like say Katrina or Iraq, or corrupt politics, we'd all be a lot better off.

Actually, I think the good doctor has something there. Just look at all the evidence we have that fear of pregnancy discourages promiscuity. Hell, if teens could have sex without getting pregnant, we'd probably have 17 year-old, breast-augmented pop idols strutting around half (no, 7/8) naked and porn stars running for Governor of California.

I mean, offering Plan B OTC is likely to bring about a topsy-turvy world where people who want to wait to get pregnant (poor, uneducated) are having lots of sex, and people who want to get pregnant as early as possible (Mormons and Christian Fundamentalists) actually WAIT...

...but "Teenage Sex Cult" sounds like a great name for a rock band! Get to it, kids!

Huh?

I work in an alternative high school and I am with the teens that most of society is afraid of. They have done alot of things, but I have not heard of this phenomenon.

If I ever hear of anything like this, from this day forward, I will think that they planted the idea. Who are 'they'? The same people who plant the ideas that abortion is used as birth control and gay men threaten marriage.

Just another way to stay in control of women.

attempt at a new distraction. They're really scraping the bottom of the barrel with this one. But I think it will serve to show everyone a new level of desperation. My prediction is, this antic will hurt the bigots more than help them. But they likely won't be crowing quite so loudly in November!
