An Intel Story Finally Told

By Robert Scheer, AlterNet. Posted April 26, 2006.

The shocking account of Tyler Drumheller, former top CIA spy in Europe, aired Sunday on '60 Minutes.' So why isn't anyone talking about it?

"The policy was set. The war in Iraq was coming, and they were looking for intelligence to fit into the policy." --Tyler Drumheller, formerly CIA's top spy in Europe

Confession time: In fall 2004, during a crucial presidential election campaign, I made the mistake of playing by corporate media rules that amount to self-censorship.

Specifically, I joined other journalists in denying the public the right to learn of a definitive investigative report by CBS' "60 Minutes" on President Bush's disregard for the truth concerning the weapons-of-mass-destruction threat allegedly posed to the United States by Iraq. Having received an advance copy of the devastating segment, I honored CBS' proprietary request not to write about the news it carried until after it aired.

Only, it never aired. CBS got cold feet, probably because of Dan Rather's troubles over an unrelated story critical of the president. The suppressed story was solidly reported and, by exposing the Bush administration's utter disregard for the truth concerning Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction, should have been made available to the public before the November election. Now, no one seems to care.

The segment finally aired this past Sunday, in a more robust form. Unfortunately, the response has been tepid; it seems the media, at least, have become jaded with all the endless examples of the president's perfidy. But the CBS story remains very important as further evidence of the depths of the Bush administration's deception.

Perhaps most damning is an interview, added for the broadcast version, with Tyler Drumheller, a CIA veteran of 26 years' service who was the agency's top spy in Europe until his retirement a year ago.

According to him, before the war Hussein's foreign minister had been "turned" and was talking secretly to U.S. intelligence. At first excited by this rare inside look at Hussein's regime, the top dogs at the White House dropped the issue like a hot rock as soon as his information contradicted their overheated rationale for "preemptive" war.

"The policy was set," Drumheller told CBS correspondent Ed Bradley. "The war in Iraq was coming. And they were looking for intelligence to fit into the policy, to justify the policy."

That's how more than three years later, after at least two major governmental investigations into prewar intelligence on Iraq and countless journalistic post-mortems, we are only just now finding out that a highly placed double agent in Iraq was poking a huge hole in the Hussein-as-WMD-bogeyman story.

"They were enthusiastic" at first, said Drumheller, "that we had a high-level penetration of Iraqis." CIA Director George Tenet reported the news that Hussein's foreign minister, Naji Sabri, was working covertly for the United States to a White House meeting attended by President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Their initial enthusiasm, Drumheller says, quickly turned to cold indifference when Sabri told them the opposite of what they wanted to hear.

"He told us that they had no active weapons-of-mass-destruction program," said the ex-CIA official. "The [White House] group that was dealing with preparation for the Iraq war came back and said they were no longer interested. And we said 'Well, what about the intel?' And they said 'Well, this isn't about intel anymore. This is about regime change.' "

The White House refused to comment for the "60 Minutes" report, but CBS noted that Rice has said Sabri was just one source, and therefore not reliable. It was ironic, considering how heavily the Bush administration relied on the now infamous Iraqi defector "Curveball," whose statements so informed the main administration allegations concerning Iraq's biochemical weapons.

Drumheller was in contact with the German intelligence agency CIS, which had detained the man with the apt code name, and says he himself informed the top CIA officials that Curveball was an outright fraud.

"They certainly took information that came from single sources on the yellowcake story and on several other stories with no corroboration at all," Drumheller said.

No wonder this man, who risked his life gathering intelligence for our country, has become a critic of the Bush administration. He is clearly unwilling to allow what the president has described as a permanent war to destroy our democracy. True patriotism is not the blind acceptance of presidential deceit.

Imperial ambition turns truth-tellers into enemies, by default, because their goal is not the exaltation of the leader's power. No wonder so many national security professionals, be they top generals or intelligence officials, have gone public recently to denounce how the Iraq war has been sold and fought: The Bush administration's willful ignorance and buck-passing mock their dedicated service to the nation.

"It just sticks in my craw every time I hear them say it's an intelligence failure," Drumheller said. "This was a policy failure."

So why did he let CBS's silence work to silence him?
Why didn't we hear about this sooner?

Confession is good for guaranteeing a repeat of the same offense at some later date. (Psychology 101)

What we, citizens, need is a more helpful evaluation of the cliquishness that the Fourth Estate parades as "we have to protect each other from disclosure in order to better tell the truth."

That pile of horse pucky hit the headlines recently with the NY Times clownish defense of whatever her name is. Rather it is evidence that Americans get misinformation, disguised as "breaking news."

"All the truth as is fit to guarantee a weekly paycheck." All that it ever was.

We have been deluged with info about how crazy, corrupt and bloodthirsty the Bushies are but hardly anyone with political power in DC wants to do anything about it. The answer must be that most of our public unservants in DC are so corrupt and timid that they do not deserve public office. DC has devolved into a puddle of timid crooks. Impeach all the Bushies and then impeach all the "public servant" crooks who refused to stand up to the Bushies.

Most likely professional courtesy. CBS had made a reasonable request that is common to the trade and Scheer and others were ethically bound to respect it. Most likely they did so in the expectation that CBS would meet its ethical obligations and run the story. Scheer strikes me as an ethical and conscientious reporter; the penchant is for people to regard others in the same way we regard ourselves. This is a little phenomenon called projection; which is also psychology 101. So Scheer erred in assuming that CBS would act as he would in the matter. This is an honest mistake. I would conclude, given the little told here, that his continued silence was an extension of his original decision.

What CBS did was to pander to the "coporate" atmosphere of a neo-fascist regime. This was a much more serious error in judgement, and they censored the story for over a year. That was not an honest mistake. That was trying to protect themselves from the right-wing smear machine in direct violation of all journalistic principles and the concept of a free press.

We Must Demand Presidential Elections This November 2006
Posted by: BillsAlterNet on Apr 27, 2006 6:05 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
On my WEB page at: www.cyberspaceadventures.com following Sunday's April 23the broadcast by 60 minutes on A SPY SPEAKS OUT I Wrote: The Time Has Come When The Democrats and All 3rd Parties Should Unite and Demand That An Unprecedented Presidential Election Be Held This Coming November. To Vote Out Of Office Our Present Lying And Misleading War Party. It Has Never Been Done Before But We Sure Need Such Action Now. I have checked with most of the Major News Papers on line and at this time had yet to see any support for taking action against the Present Bush Administration regarding the 60 minutes expouser of FBI informant Tyler Drumheller who told (CBS) Quote: "The policy was set. The war in Iraq was coming and they were looking for intelligence to fit into the policy."
Where Is The Bush War Party Leading our Nation? I asked
Today April 27th I want to thank AlterNet Robert Scheer, for picking up the story and asking the same question.
Impeaching the President and Vice President will take time. We do not have that kind of time. November elections are only a few days over six months from now. The Bush Administration must be removed as quickly as possible to let the World know that we do not intend to be a Nation of ulimited war and agression against other Nations.
So lets demand a Presidential Election this November of 2006.
May We Have World Peace and Plenty For All Soon.
Is anyone interested in taking this course. Let us let the people be heard. I am willing. Let me hear from you.
LET US HAVE WORLD PEACE AND PLENTY FOR ALL SOON.

If they'd reinstated Dan Rather as anchor, and done an entire hour on the entire debacle IN PRIME TIME, believe me, EVERYONE WOULD HAVE NOTICED.

But one can only make suggestions.

Maybe they wanted it to slip in under the radar, given what happened last time they told the story.

WE ALL KNOW THE TRUTH. THE PEOPLE IN CHARGE ARE IGNORING THE TRUTH. WE ARE TIRED OF IT. WE ARE EITHER TOO DAMN BUSY, TOO DAMN BROKE, OR BOTH.

MOST OF US HAVE KNOWN WHO AND WHAT BUSH IS FOR YEARS- A BULLY, A COWARD, A FAILURE. HOW COULD ONE NOT SEE THIS? WHY DON'T WE BELIEVE WHAT'S IN FRONT OF US? DENIAL - THE CONSTANT STATE OF THE AMERICAN PUBLIC.

WHY? WE ARE AFRAID. THERE IS NO CONSISTENT STRONG LEADERSHIP. NO ONE REALLY CARES ALL THAT MUCH. THOSE OF US WHO DO ARE THE ARCHTYPICAL VOICES IN THE WILDERNESS.

BRING ON THE STORMTROOPERS.

Follow the money!

I didn't even read this before commenting. I don't have to. The best and most appropriate advice in this case came from "Deep Throat", who leaked information to Bob Woodward of the Washington Post during the Nixon Watergate upheaval. He said; "Follow the money".

“The money” today is in petro-dollars. If you want evidence of that, research all the products made from petroleum. Believe it or not, some vitamins are made of it- fertilizers too: medicines and plastics. I’ll bet right now, your wearing at least one piece of clothing made from petroleum products!. It’s a safe bet, considering every synthetic cloth but silk is made from it!

With that many industries (and more) “interested” in oil, is it any wonder America feels collectively compelled by and “interested" in safe guarding the Persian gulf?

It's really that simple- Follow the money!

I guess upon reflection I wasn't surprised to learn about this but after I read Scheer's piece this morning I wrote to CBS 60 minutes telling them of my disgust and disappointment that they aided and abetted the administration by holding back this segment .... outrageous .... they should go write novels because certainly 2 year old interviews are not news. not that any one (particularly the media) cares what anyone thinks anymore...follow the money is right.

I have been a subscriber to the San Diego Herald Tribune for over 25 years and have decided that like my pack a day habit I am addicted. The Illinois legislature has voted to impeach Bush and the California legislature is considering it now. Many city governments and the vast majority of Americans want to impeach him, but The San Diego Union evidently does not consider this news.

Hitler's Doctor Goeble's didn't have any better grip on the news than does the American press. The New York Times masthead "All the news thats fit to print" should read "all the news the government wants you to hear." There is no rational reason for my paying for the only thing in it that interests me--the crossword puzzle. I sit down at my computer and read the Times, The post, and USA today, then I go to Alter Net, Op Ed news, Counterpunch, and MSNBC news to get an idea of whats going on.

On Sunday the paper weighs over six pounds--99 percent advertising and the rest old news and right wing editorial commentary. I am canceling my subscriptions and will rely on an alarm clock to wake me up instead of the thump of a newspaper thrown on my sidewalk.

I've always appreciated Robert Scheer's columns, but sitting on info like this is simply unacceptable. I know I dont have the all the facts and sides about exactly how this info was obtained by Scheer but come on. Isint this too little too late.

It concerns me when Alternet columnists act in the same ways the mainstream media does. Isint that what we come to Alternet for? The journalisim we dont get other places?

Confession - Restitution

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Confession is to cleanse oneself of sin. Usually there is some "penance" one does to complete the process - in some belief systems, this is an effort to right the wrong. In owning up to his complicity to not speaking the truth on Bush's lies before the election Sheerer was, in part, responsible for Bush's election. Someone mentioned that the alternate news sources were reporting this - fine, but most Americans don't know about using the internet to find other news - most listen to political parties as voiced through the common media.
Part of the "sin" lies with Sheerer, part with ourselves. When the major media sources start "slanting" the news (either deliberately or by omission) those who know have an obligation to RISE UP and speak, and make people aware of alternate sources for news.
I suggest that we all start with letters to our editors regarding this control of news, to media themselves with rational outrage, and to our politicians who (I hope) must be aware of how they've been duped. Finally, some House members are calling for a complete investigation. Why has it taken so long? Duh - the elections are coming up and they don't want to be seen as stupid - or worse - complicit.
Unfortunaly, Bush was elected because journalists such as Sheerer who didn't speak up at the appropriate time. Now, I feel, he's obligated to try undo the harm he's caused - loss of thousands of American lives, injury of over 10,000, loss of many thousands of Iraqi lives (many innocent civilian lives) and injuries of Iraqis in the tens of thousandsi. Maybe now that the whole world knows, and his access to the mainstream media hasn't been pulled, he'll be brave enough to tell this story in the mainstream press.
Another part of the Catholic sense of sin is in failing to meet our moral obligations in what I have done, and what I have failed to do, alone or with others. Failure to take action, personally and through our influence groups condones the continued US presence in Iraq. Please, everyone get involved.

The CIA story was held until it could be trumped by even worse news. That gives it a short life. GAS IS $3+ A GALLON.
That's the news in the order that best serves the powers that be. It's been that way for five years. Nothing has ever been as successfully buried in useless information called news as the War in Iraq. Most Americans knew very little about it and many cared less. It has been a true American tragedy. Look back on news. The pattern jumps right out at you. Thanks

We are now aiming at Iran. How can we trust any information or justification that comes from this administration? Is the media going to do its job and check the facts or are they going to quote the so called facts shared by the the liers and use them as the source of information. We deserve to know the truth and we deserve to have careful consideration by the administration and Congress before we head into another war.

WHO ELSE WILL HAVE THE COURAGE?

The news media can write articles and voice opinions about how President George W. Bush has lied about this and that. (In fact, what took them so long to realize that.) But, this still means nothing. Such revelations of Truth have become the back and forth cackle of gossiping spin masters signifying nothing, as nothing has changed.

But no, the real deal is when one reporter, that first one, upon being chosen by President Bush to ask a question at one of his press opportunities, stands up and summons the Strength and Courage to ask, " Mr. President, when you lied about...!"

That's what it will take --- before the rest of them will do the same. It's time for someone to say that the Emperor has no clothes to his face.

That's also when the evidence for impeachment will be brought forth before the American Public, and that's when it will mean something. Now we only hear the Truth as it is, "...twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools." (Kipling)

Just as Republicans constantly accused Clinton of lying, together with Clinton's defense of his "private life" lie brought the Public into play, so can the Press bring out the Truth. And let's put Bush and Cheney under oath as well. Only then, will the Wisdom of Truth find its place in our great land.

Until then, lying continues to be our government's national pastime. We have come to expect it. We take it for granted. We kill and die for it. And the shadows of sadness remain our constant companions..

the end
