A Fox in Bush's White House

Will Fox News's Snow fix Bush's impotence or just keep on defending David Duke?

Fox News's Tony Snow will be announced as Scott McClellan's replacement today, a move expected to draw sentiments like this one, from PEEK's Melissa McEwan:

Nothing warms the very cockles of my crusty old heart like a mendacious shill finally being able to slough off the restrictive bonds forged in the guise of legitmacy, at long last free of the need to insist while stifling a maniacal laugh that one is not a two-dollar administration whore. Now the dear Mr. Snow can sing it loud and proud. Ah, the sweet smell of freedom.
And Melissa's not all that old.

Judd Legum finds some surprisingly critical remarks from Snow about his new boss. Among them:

– "George Bush has become something of an embarrassment." [11/11/05]

– "No president has looked this impotent this long when it comes to defending presidential powers and prerogatives." [9/30/05]

Impotent? Clearly Snow fancies himself a dose of Presidential Viagraâ„¢, bursting on the scene to heal Bush's, er, limp poll numbers.

Rather than any sort of balance, I think this show of presidential dissing probably proves that Snow and his Fox friends are self-serving ratings whores at least as much as they're White House shills.

But here's my favorite, from way back in 1991 when Snow was a speechwriter for Bush I:

"[Ex-Klansman David] Duke is talking about things people really care about: high taxes, crummy schools, crime-ridden streets, welfare dependency, equal opportunity. A lot of politicians aren't talking about these things." [Chicago Tribune, 11/20/91]
