Joe Lieberman, reluctant Democrat

Alone, he can do better.

Joe Lieberman refuses to do something even turncoat Zell Miller did explicitly: commit to the Democratic Party. Having consistently letting Democrats down, siding with Republicans, and putting a bipartisan face on onerous legislation, he faces an increasingly dangerous-looking primary from Ned Lamont.

Lieberman, who receives significant support from the party leadership, essentially refuses to commit to supporting the primary process and get behind the Democrats' chosen candidate. Asked by Joe Lalli whether "he would always be a member of the Democratic party," Lieberman responded, in part: "I'm not gonna rule out any other option for now because I feel so strongly that I can do better for the State of Connecticut for the next six years in the United States Senate that I want to give all the voters a chance to make that decision on Election day in November."

Well, at least he wants to be a Democrat, that should count for something, right?

The best part is that, even in his mush-mouthed declaration of non-committment to the Democratic Party, he manages to use a snippet of the Democrats' latest slogan: Together, We Can Do Better; only he's molded it to his own purposes: Alone, I can do better. (ConnecticutBlog)
