'Anti-Christian Conspirators' Slay DeLay

By Robert Scheer, Truthdig. Posted April 5, 2006.

DeLay bids Congress adieu, insisting that he's being persecuted for his Christianity, not his corruption.

Blame it on the vast anti-Christian conspiracy. That was the explanation offered by U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay of Texas and his supporters last week for the whirlpool of legal difficulties that finally led the ex-leader of the Republicans in Congress to admit it was time to call it quits.

The convener of a "War on Christians" conference held in the nation's capital outrageously depicted the former House majority leader's political plight as the unwarranted crucifixion of a Christ-like leader by God-haters. And, with his trademark gall, the infamously ethically challenged DeLay eagerly embraced this explanation when it was his turn to speak to the adoring crowd.

"We have been chosen to live as Christians at a time when our culture is being poisoned and our world is being threatened," thundered the Texan pest-control entrepreneur who rose to become one of America's most powerful politicians. "The enemies of virtue may be on the march, but they have not won."

Let's leave aside for a moment the absurdity of right-wing Christians' persecution complex at a time when their adherents effectively control all three branches of the federal government. What's even more confusing is how so many enemies of virtue seem to have had a field day operating under poor DeLay's auspices, including the latest member of his staff to plead guilty to a felony.

That would be Tony Rudy, DeLay's former deputy chief of staff, who has now pleaded guilty to a federal conspiracy charge for accepting payments from fellow criminal Jack Abramoff while serving in DeLay's office, and later working to corrupt public officials and defraud clients.

To be fair to DeLay, it should be noted that as absurd as his religious posturing may appear, it comes at a time when he has been denied the services of his onetime spiritual adviser and former chief of staff. Edwin Buckham, an evangelical minister who turned lobbyist after leaving DeLay's staff, is himself now mired in potential legal problems stemming from Rudy's plea bargain.

A devastating article by R. Jeffrey Smith in the Washington Post last week reported that Buckham and his wife received a total of nearly a million bucks from the "nonprofit" U.S. Family Network, which he created as a front group largely funded by clients of Abramoff.

The group -- once fraudulently touted by DeLay in a fundraising letter as a "grassroots" organization devoted to family values -- was started by Buckham while he was still in charge of the congressman's staff and operated out of a Washington town house that also served as DeLay's off-Capitol Hill office.

The main family values served by the organization were apparently those of the Buckham family, which received nearly one-third of its entire disbursements, and the Rudy family, which received payments of $26,000 funneled to Tony Rudy's wife while he was on DeLay's staff. Buckham, in turn, completed the circle by carrying DeLay's wife, Christine, on the payroll of his consulting firm for three years.

Dizzy yet? It gets worse, much worse. Despite its alleged focus on protecting American families, the Family Network's lobbying instead found success in securing DeLay's political support of Russian oil profiteers, sweatshop operators in the U.S. protectorate of the Northern Marianas, and American Indian gambling casinos afraid of competition.

It's a peculiar record for an organization launched with the stated purpose of pushing policies to advance "families, the economic prosperity, social improvement, moral fitness, and general well being of the United States." But perhaps DeLay and his underlings just have a different interpretation of what "it" is when it comes to "moral fitness."

After all, DeLay did argue publicly that allowing textile manufacturers in the Marianas to sew in "Made In the USA" labels while not having to follow our labor and immigration laws was the moral thing to do. And when Abramoff, recipient of more than $7 million in lobbying fees from the Marianas government, managed to get him to visit, DeLay took the opportunity not only to call Abramoff "one of my closest and dearest friends," he also cast the sweatshop owners' cause -- protecting their right to cheap imported Chinese labor -- in a Christian framework.

"Stand firm," Delay urged them at a dinner hosted by a major sweatshop company, as he promised to protect their profitable loophole from any corrective legislation. "Resist evil. Remember that all truth and blessings emanate from our Creator."

What is still unclear, however, is how, if DeLay really fears the judgment of his creator, can he be so cavalier in assuming he will get an eternal pass on this despicable behavior?

TOM DELAY IS JUST ONE OF THE MANY PERVERTS THAT SUCKUP TO THE PERVERTED CHENEY/BUSH REGIME. I am sure that there are a lot of good Christians but none of the good Christians have taken jobs in the Bush slaughterhouse of goodness.

"Christianity is a great religion: THEY should all try it."-Gandhi

What John Lennon really said in 1966 to Journalist, Maureen Cleave for the London’s Evening Standard was:

“We’re more popular than Jesus now: I don’t know which will go first-rock ‘n’ roll or Christianity. Jesus was alright but his disciples were thick and ordinary. It’s them twisting it that ruins it for me.”-excerpted from April 2, 2006 WAWA BLOG http://www.wearewideawake.org

What WAWA has been saying: The greatest threat to American democracy is the neo-con, neo-christian right wing fundamentalists who lust for political power, control and domination of others and a limp media that only reports what the fundamentalists say.

WAWA is a voice out of the wilderness who agree's with Chesterton:

"The problem is not with Christianity, but that too few Christians have DONE IT!"

Fundamentalists and Truth

Fundamentalists create a world perspective that makes them feel good and safe. Anything outside of that perspective is demonized. Their narrow-mindedness is absurd logically, but extremely dangerous ethically and morally. It's called: denial. They are experts at denial because it is too scary and threatened to live from their own authenticity than to live according to anyone who gives them standards to live by. Remember the story of the "Grand Inquisitor" in Dovtoyesky's Brother's Karamazov. Who wants freedom when I can follow someone who gives me the safety of rules and regulations to live by?! Bush and his cronies (all fundies)are the epitomy of the Grand Inquisitor's followers. See where it has gotten Chrisitanity, Judaism, Islam, and the political right (divided and hate-filled).

Tom DeLay and the "Religious" Right
Posted by: Tom Degan on Apr 6, 2006 5:02 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
If the so-called "Religious Right" would ever take the time to read and understand the Sermon on the Mount I would sleep a little easier at night. But I'm not sure they're even aware of that part of the Gospel. If they are they must be thinking, "If we ignore it, maybe it will go away". They certainly never, ever talk about it. I'll wager anyone here anything that they can't find a recording or an article where Jerry Falwell or Pat Robertson praises the truth and beauty on the Sermon on the Mount. I'll be willing to bet everyone that since the day he announced his candidacy George "Jesus is my favorite political philosopher" Bush has never even mentioned the Sermon on the Mount. I wonder why? Let's see..."Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth....Blessed are the Peace makers...." There you have it. The mission of Jesus Christ is diametrically opposed to the real agenda of the Republican Right Wing. Were Jesus to come down today, these fools would send him to solitary confinement at Gitmo.

And now Tom DeLay, hiding his ungodliness behind what his supporters refer to as "an angelic smile" is trying to tell us that he is being persecuted by the left because of his christianity. As a practicing Catholic that assertion totally sickens me.

To all Christians, ask yourselves this question: What is there in the Republican's domestic or international policies that have anything to do with the teaching of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ? Please just show me one thing and I promise you that I'll shut up forever. And please, don't come up with the tried and true line that there are too many things to count or that they're "Pro Life" (Their giddy enthusiasm for the death penaly proves that lie). Show me one thing. Just one thing. Bring it on!

Pray for peace.

Delay is in face saving mode noticably he points to all the liberals and the media and the persecutors of his religion. ( Please!) Yet here is someone who many Texans knew was a theif and an irresponsible scoundrel without a moral compass when it came to matters of spending tax payer's money, his love of money and his delusions of his "untouchable"( unaccountable) status, his use and mis use of funds whether to family members or those that bought the "It's okay,, Tom Delay is in power here, and if he says it's okay (even though questionable) it must be." mode of

I suspect that you're Jewish, and I'm Irish-Catholic Christian, but I sure feel that I'm on the same team that you are. I've gotten to a point where I almost think many of us Christians should abandon the term because it's been so abused and misused by right wing fundamentalists. They take a segment of Jesus' teachings, usually out of context, and use it to justify most of the attitudes that Jesus condemned.

DeLay may be right - What self respecting Christian would want to stay associated with the likes of the "Hammer's" "born again" hypocrisy. That goes for Bush, Robertson and many others as well. Their lies, deception, smears, fear, secrecy, surveillance, and much, much more sinfulness is unparalleled in government history. THAT is Christianity????? Jesus guidelines to Christians of blessing the poor, healing the sick, and spurning the rich are definitely not Republican high points of spirituality and has set Christian credibility back many years. Instead they insist on deciding morality and choices for individuals which do not belong is the constitution or official policies to promote the general welfare of America.

The antics of Tom Delay are typically anti-Christ. It's really scary to realize that we are living in the days Jesus taught his followers to lookout for. I believe a lot of true Christians were sucked into the "Conservative" Christian movement a few years back out of ignorance and an inability to discern the spirits of the age. Surely those words "by their fruits, you will KNOW them." will become a measuring line for those of us who need lessons in discernment. Mr. Delays remarks about being persecuted because of his religious beliefs, are a slap in the face to any true follower of Christ. We are living in exciting times; the prohecies of Jesus are being fulfilled everyday all around us; especially in D.C. Get out your Bibles and read Matthew 13: we are seeing the wheat and the tares being separated at this moment. There will be more and more "tares" gathered up in the immediate future. As an advocate for Judicial Reform, Restorative Justice, and Prison reform, I am heartsick when I think of the thousands of non-violent, poor offenders locked up in prisons all over our country. For many, their worst crime is poverty (and addiction) and inability to hire a "lawyer." By contrast look at our top lobbyists and government officials taking millions of dollars, and when caught, get only a slap on the wrist compared to poor people without representation. The whole picture, including the "For Profit Private Prisons" proves how sick our "far religious conservative right" has brought this once great country. Matthew 13: begins "while men were sleeping" that is so true, it is time for the Church and all America to WAKE UP and see where this country is heading. When Abramoff fell, it started the domino effect. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. God bless you. "Truthie"

the depths of their hypocrisy know no limits. . .

Disgusting! Not just the perverted whining of right-wing fundamentalist "Christians" about being a persecuted minority (from the same Orwelian rabbit's hat out of which they pull their "liberal media" BS whenever it suits them); these people's hypocrisy is downright CRIMINIAL. . .

In the Northern Marianas, garment workers are held in virtual slavery, oftentimes, out of economic desperation, forced into the sex trade and, in the event they get preganant, FORCED TO HAVE ABORTIONS! This is a direct result of policies that DeLay helped put into place and protect. What would his so-called "pro-life" followers think of that (if they didn't dismiss it as a "liberal lie")????? And these are the same scumbags who try to justify their draconian anti-abortion views by telling us that "98 per cent of children born of incest are normal" or that there should be no exception for rape because "that would compound one crime with another" OH! Give me a freakin' break!!!!!

I consider myself a spiritual man, but an increasingly less-religious one. I find myself turned-off, disgusted and angered by the lies, the bald-faced hypocrisy, anti-intellectualism, paternalistic repressiveness, shrill reactionary-ism and downright medieval triumphalist posturing of monotheistic fundamentalists. I wonder if homo sapiens (ironically derived from the word for "wise!") can ever hope to survive, let alone evolve, in a world controled by such people. I doubt it.

I am conflicted too, in that I tend not to belive either in heaven or hell; yet I find myself hoping there's a hell for people like Bush/Cheney/DeLay et al. as there doesn't seem to be much prospect for real JUSTICE here on earth at the present moment.

A passage from the Talmud always comes back to me: "Absolute certainty is poison to the soul." Unfortunatly, it also seems to be poison for the body politic as well.

Here's what I think maybe the driving force behind scumbag Tom DeLay's corruption. He is an adherent of "Name-it, Claim-it" theology, in that effect says that twice-born Christians are "little gods" who should be successful in everything they do in life and problems, such as indebtedness, divorce etc., show a lack of faith. Given this kind of theology, is it any wonder why DeLay things he's above reproach.

personally I'd take expressions of faith such as that attributed to Drew Barrymore (my favourite film star) in the Nov 2000 US edition of Marie Claire magazine "I pray every night for a safe world" over a Tom DeLay any day of the week and twice on Sundays. it's people like him who tend to make atheism respectable!

Like Bush, DeLay's Christianity is a Total Sham & What Persecution?
Posted by: genericname on Feb 25, 2007 5:23 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
First of all, DeLay is like President Bush; both of them are only Christians when cameras are on them. Secondly, how dare he claim "religious persecution"? No Christian living in this country has been persecuted by anybody more evil than Howard Stern. When you hear reports of someone being persecuted for being Christian, it's usually some variant of "I was at work/school/the library or on the bus, and I overheard someone telling a joke that featured Jesus or Mary." Somehow, hearing an off-color joke about Jesus is the equivalent of swastikas painting on a synagogue or torching a Black church.
And if you think that Christians are singled out for persecution, answer this: How many death sentences have been commuted because the condemned person has adopted Zen Buddhism or even Judaism? Yet if he/she gives his/her life to Jesus, the governor's office is flooded with telegrams asking for commutation and his E-mail is clogged with the same.
