The Mix

What’s the matter with Washington?

Lazyness, arrogance, incompetence …
I've said it before: what do you expect when you put an elite that hates government in a position to govern? You get a lot of crappy government, that's what.

Here are a few quick hits -- unrelated items that tell a broader story …

I had an off-the-record lunch meeting with a senior staffer for a House Dem. He told me that all this week and next, there's nothing going on in the House; there are only suspension sessions on the schedule. That means they can't do any actual legislating -- under suspension of the rules all they can do is pass resolutions congratulating community organizations or thanking the troops for their bravery. I asked my lunch partner if he thought that was because GOPers didn't want to vote on any of the Whitehouse's unpopular proposals. He said that it was partially that, but more their governing philosophy: he who governs least governs best. "You'd think the country's not facing any problems," he said. Also, "you'd think they'd run out of post offices to name."
