The New New Deal Contest

A new year, a new way of looking at it all.

For those of you who think the new year is off to a rocky start (floods galore, dead miners, and dastardly evesdropping deception), you'll be happy to know you get a week grace period. We'll officially count January 1st-7th as residue from 2005, and start afresh, 2006, the year of redemption (hat tip to Tookie Williams) for progressives, for lefties, for constitutional lovers, for humanists everywhere.

How to begin? AlterNet reader Elizabeth Powell suggests a contest for the best progressive tagline/slogan for 2006. This is the rallying cry of what we want and believe we can achieve (through the 2006 elections, grassroots activism, etc.). The tagilne has got to be concise, postive, active (verbs, we love verbs), concrete and have a short paragraph of rationale to follow.

Aim high. "Another World Is Possible," was the de facto slogan for 2002-2004, but it was too vague and passive. Another underachiever, floated this year by Harry Reid, was "America Can Do Better." But we find it too wimpy and too linked to the conservative agenda. Recasts of old sucessful slogans (The New Deal; the Great Society; The Other America) are encouraged.
