David Sirota asks why we take warmongers seriously when they brand their position as tougher than the opposition:

Food for thought for politicians, pundits and the media in general: why are those who support keeping American troops in Iraq considered "tough" and those who favor a withdrawal/exit strategy considered "weak"? Think about it – those characterizations allude to the concept that those who take either position actually has a personal, physical stake in their position. But since the military draft ended a long time ago, and the military is now all-volunteer, the truth is, most Americans don't have a personal, physical stake in their own foreign/military positions. That is, for most of us, our beliefs about foreign/military policy never have to factor in any physical threats/consequences to us personally. [...]
