The GOP's Culture of Corruption

By Stephen Pizzo, News for Real. Posted November 30, 2005.

Only now is the general public starting to learn how corruption swept through the GOP after the party's rise to majority status in the '90s. But it didn't happen suddenly.

The old saying goes that even a broken clock is right twice a day. So when Democrats accuse Republicans of fostering a culture of corruption, it proves the old saying true. (That's once; the other time they've been right lately is in calling for an early withdrawal from Iraq.)

We saw further evidence of the GOP's culture of corruption yesterday when California Republican Rep. Randy Cunningham resigned from Congress after admitting to taking $2 million in bribes from a defense contractor.

But Randy is a small fry; his take is chump change. Further up the GOP food chain, the crimes and corruption are so enormous they would have left even Carl Sagan at a loss for superlatives. (Billions upon billions upon billions…)

Only now is the general public starting to learn just how corruption swept through the GOP ranks after the party's rise to majority status in the 1990s.  But it didn't happen all at once. And it didn't begin yesterday. It began over eleven years ago.

I stumbled across evidence of the GOP's spreading cancer of corruption back in early 2002 while picking through the still-smoldering ashes of Enron. In fact, it may be proven some day that Tom DeLay was a creation of Enron -- but more on that later.

While prosecutors are only now beginning to peel back the layers of corruption involving the GOP's top gun, Tom DeLay and his gang, it was clear long ago to any reporter willing to take the time to look that these guys were up to no good. (Read my March 2002 expose here.)

So, you may ask, why did it take so long to stop them? Why didn't someone blow the whistle sooner? As you learn just how much evidence was laying around out there for the media to pick up, you'll shake your head in disbelief. And I'm talking steaming-hot hints, too -- like the mob hit involving DeLay's former top aide, Scanlon, and DeLay's chief money- raiser, Abramoff. The media covered that story as though it were just another "Miami Vice" crime plot. Now we know differently -- it was part of much bigger things.

It would be one thing if the media could argue that there was no way for them to know, because we now know that's not true. As with the lead-up to the Iraq war, there was no shortage of weapons experts willing to explain to reporters why it was highly unlikely that Iraq had anything even close to a functioning nuclear weapons program. Or that Iraq could deliver chemical or biological weapons beyond their own borders. But instead they parroted administration claims to the contrary.

The same goes for the DeLay gang. All it took was a few days and virtually no budget for me to find plenty of clues that something big was afoot involving the GOP's rising star. No one could have read my list of particulars without concluding that something very ugly was afoot within the DeLay operation.

Still nothing was done. Nothing was written. No one was investigated. Nothing, until American Indian tribes discovered the DeLay gang had stolen $80 million from them, and a Texas District Attorney indicted DeLay this year for campaign money laundering.

But the recent indictments of DeLay and Abramoff, and the charges Mike Scanlon pleaded guilty to last week, represent the mere tip of an iceberg of fraud, corruption and official malfeasance. If the mainstream media wants to redeem itself, here are more rocks in DeLay's garden that require a thorough look-under. (Each is detailed in that old 2002 report, as quoted below.)

  • Exactly what was DeLay's full relationship with Enron -- and visa versa? (Yes, it's "old news," but it remains unreported old news. The question worth exploring is this: Was Tom DeLay Enron's bastard child?)
"Enron hosted Tom Delay's PAC -- ARMPAC's -- first fundraiser. It was held in Enron's hometown of Houston, Texas and raised $280,000 for DeLay's new leadership PAC. Subsequent disclosures show that Enron and its executives gave early and often. Ken Lay contributed $50,000 to ARMPAC, Enron Vice Chairman, Joseph Sutton, contributed another $25,000. The full extent of Enron's financial support for DeLay's PAC may never be known since reporting such contributions became mandatory only in 2000."

  • Just how many under-the-table cash streams did DeLay have flowing into his various stashes? For example:
"When Enron lobbyists asked how best to proceed, DeLay noted that Enron could begin by giving his Chief of Staff, Ed Buckham (who at that very moment was forming his own consulting company, the Alexander Strategy Group) and Karl Gallant, a consultant to DeLay's ARMPAC, the contract to manage the campaign….Gallant had recently worked on a propaganda campaign for the tobacco industry…Alexander Strategy Group put DeLay's wife, Christine on its payroll. She reportedly pocketed a net "salary" of $40,000. Christine DeLay is a retired schoolteacher. What she did for her salary is unclear. According to Alexander Strategy Group, she neither lobbied for the company nor did she show up for work there. Why then were they paying her? The company says Alexander Strategies wrote the checks to Christine DeLay as a "bookkeeping convenience" for ARMPAC.

  • How much of Jack Abramoff's Indian gaming loot found its way into DeLay-related campaigns and PACs, or were used to fund overseas junkets for DeLay and other Republicans?

  • Isn't it time for a complete audit of DeLay and Abramoff's relationships with sweatshop operators in the US protectorate in the Mariana Islands? You might begin by asking the former Mariana lobbyist for Jack Abramoff: Patrick Pizzella. You'll find him over at the Department of Labor, where he now serves as assistant secretary of labor. It was Pizzella's job to organize Abramoff's political junkets to the islands.

  • Might it not be useful for us to know the full extent of Tom DeLay's dealings with the largest operator of Mariana sweatshops, Chinese national Willie Tan?
"The Marianas account has paid off handsomely for both DeLay and Abramoff, whose lobbying efforts resulted in more than $8 million in fees over the past five years, some of which inevitably ended up in DeLay's leadership PAC and as personal contributions from Abramoff over the years to DeLay's campaign war chests. DeLay was also able to distribute some of that money to those in Congress friendly to his cause -- a fact Abramoff was quick to point out to his client: "Thanks to past trips the Commonwealth of Northern Marianas has many friends on the Appropriations Committees in Congress," Abramoff wrote to Hong Kong sweatshop mogul Willie Tan. The Tan-controlled newspaper, Saipan Tribune, responded with an article lauding Abramoff.

  • What was Delay's relationship with Mariana conservative political strongman Bin Fidel?
When the Marianas put out a call for bids for a new $120 million power plant, a Japanese company was awarded the contract. Enron, attracted by the island's lack of environmental rules, wanted in and complained to DeLay that they had not been given a fair shot at the contract for the power plant.
DeLay responded by calling in some chits from his friends in the Mariana administration -- in particular Ben Fital, a conservative politician whom DeLay's former aides, Ed Buckham and Mike Scanlon, helped get elected as the island's representative in Congress.  Buckham's lobbying firm, Alexander Strategies Group's representation of Enron's interests in the Marianas also bagged him $50,000 in fees.
There were all kinds of political pushes from the top and the side and every way," Vincent Mesa, the island's former manger of the its power utilities, recalled later. "There were all kinds of political interference. They said, 'Just do it! Give Enron the contract."

Surprise, surprise, Enron won the re-bidding… and the citizens of the Marianas are still paying the bill for their unfinished power plant.

Then there was this 2001 editorial in the Willie Tan-owned Saipan Tribune:
"If [Abramoff's] past success in defending our interests is not enough reason to lock him into a long-term deal, the fact that George W. Bush is now the new President is yet another reason. [Abramoff] was able to defend us by educating powerful Members of Congress and arranging a trip to these islands by the most powerful member, Congressman Tom DeLay. Mr. Abramoff and his team have racked up win after win for these islands."
Considering all we know now about just how sleazy these two guys -- DeLay and Abramoff -- are, wouldn't it be nice to also know the full extent of their ties with Enron, plus their activities in the U.S.-controlled Mariana Islands?

Inquiring minds would like to know. Better late than never, huh?

Some time ago I received a letter from a
friend in Toledo who sent the following quote
from Kurt Vonnegut's "Breakfast of Champions"-
as a sort of short hand to describe what has been
going on.

"The chief weapon of the sea pirates, however, was their
ability to astonish. Nobody else could believe, until it was
much too late, how heartless and greedy the were."

from Breakfast of Champions, by Kurt Vonnegut, 1973
p. 12.

-it may be that the broken clock indicates the time
to be "much too late."

Power always corrupts.

What we have today in USA is a Democracy run by those who have the most money and political connections = POWER.

Democracies ONLY flourish when 'we the people' are vigilent and hold 'leaders' accountable.

THE HAMMER/Delay was instrumental in pounding the nails in the Palestinian Israeli peace/PIECE process due to his misguided and arrogant 'christian' zionism fundamentalism.

"Delay had been a very negative behind-the-scenes influence in terms of trying to get legislation and appropriations approved that would advance the peace process,"
-Lewis Roth, American's for Peace NOW, Assistant Executive Director

Surely anyone who can assert that it was a mob hit has more to contribute. OK, I won't call you 'Shirley' if you'll provide more info.

GOP Culture of Corruption Goes Back Farther

I believe the Republican Party culture of corruption goes back a hell of a lot farther than 11 years. It goes back to the day that Bobby Kennedy was gunned down in Los Angeles, otherwise, how else would Richard Nixon have gotten in the White House. Now that George Bush and his bunch of thugs are in power, and in urgent need of overthrow, this so called administration is nothing more than a crime family that makes the Gambinos, Genevese, Columbo and Bonanno crime families look like choir boys by comparison.

one would think that those who may be co-operating with the ongoing investigation just might end up in some kind of "accident." Remember that these guys have been setting up their power take-over for decades. I agree that this current bunch of crooks make the "la costa nostra" look like a circle jerk. Our only hope is to IMPEACH THEM ALL NOW! If we don't do something, we will have no rights left at all.

Tip of the iceberg? From what we hear today from the media – or rather, not hear – they're STILL too afraid or too corrupted to look under the water line. They'd better: we're all on the Titanic, and we're steaming right at that iceberg at flank speed...

Why do we have twelve air-craft carrier groups when there is no possible adversary? Why does a great liberal like Jimmy Carter accept the naming of a nuclear submarine-The Jimmy Carter? Why does 500 billion dollars of tax money go to a war department with no possible enemies? 500 billion dollars a year would end poverty in the United States?

If we continue to accept this monstrous situation, we are guilty of aiding and abetting corruption.

These guys are some slippery sons of bitches! I can tell you that!

They know that all they have to do is trot some idealogical morrass for the Liberals (like us!) to get stuck in and they can steal the show while our backs are turned!! Last time it was the gay marrige issue that they started railing against right before election time to get the whole country behind them, and make us look like we were on the wrong side!

ENOUGH!! No matter what they do, don't let them take our eyes off the prize!! Let them rant and rave all they want about whatever nonissue they want! After they get done, drag them kicking and screaming back to the matters at hand!! Those being Iraq, and Republican adventures in campain finance! If we keep their feet to the fire, we can win this one easy!! But if we let them tempt us off course and get us rooting around in the bushes, we're fucked!! AGAIN!!!

And another thing!! Don't let this third party stuff divide us into warring factions amongst ourselves! The main thing is to get Bush and the Neocons the fuck out of there!! Get behind whoever can get the job done and STAY THERE!!! If it weren't for Nader we wouldn't have gotten Bush in 2000! Don't get me wrong! I'm a registered Libertarian! But this isn't the time to be splitting up the base!! If a Democrat can get the job done VOTE DEMOCRATIC!! Stop all this third party drama for a little while untill we get rid of the Neocons! We can fight it out later!!

We got to get it right this time, people! If we get the House and the Senate back next year, we can drag Bush and his misdeeds in to the light of day!! But it won't happen with Republicans running both houses of Congress!!!

We can do it!!!

The 2001 tax act made it quite clear that the Republicans were corrupt. There was a small provision which changed (for 2001 only) the due date of corporate estimated tax payments from 9/15 to 10/01. Given the time value of money, this cost the government money. So why do it? It moves the revenue from those estimated payments from the 2000-2001 fiscal year to the 2001-2002 fiscal year. So what, you say. It is significant because shifting revenue from one year to another is classic accounting fraud. Those of us not in the government can go to jail for doing this. I realize that the form is right - Congress passed a law - but the substance of this is still accounting fraud.

Bush and the NeoCons are Vatican Operatives!

It is obvious through casual observation that money, religion and politics are inseparable and rife with deception. What isn't quite so obvious, but nonetheless discoverable, is that the national leaders who gain power and rule using these three ancient deceptions are invariably members of the same secret societies. Furthermore, most of these secret societies have proven links to the Vatican. Now ask yourselves; at which point in history did the plutocrats and aristocrats, who still control the planet's wealth and resources, ever break ties with the Vatican? The answer is never! The only thing that’s changed over the last two centuries is the quality and nature of their deceptions.

Leaders of powerful nations still visit the Vatican and kiss the Pope's ring, exactly as they've done for much of the last two millennia. Notice how George Bush openly (and stupidly) asked the Pope, a foreign potentate, to intervene in the 2004 presidential election? Why did he feel so comfortable making such an outrageous request? Why did the Vatican follow through on his request while publicly pretending to oppose him? Isn’t it a treasonous act for the President to seek foreign intervention in a national election? Why no uproar from the press? Is the Vatican somehow exempted from this law?

Is it possible most people have missed something very important and are focusing on the wrong targets? Too many refuse to recognize that the Vatican is still up to its same old tricks. The only evidence used to support its trustworthiness are Papal pronouncements. On the other hand, current events and history are replete with examples of Vatican lies, deception, and abominable evil. Though this is the largest single concentration of child rapists on the planet, some people still think they are trustworthy. In any other setting, such a conclusion would be viewed as delusional.

Now there is irrefutable proof that Christianity is a purposeful deception. The most recent evidence leaves no reasonable doubt about that conclusion. It further proves that the Vatican and its primary cohorts are knowingly practicing deception by mixing money, religion and politics. If the Vatican is lying about Christianity and child rape, what else have they always lied about?

A Lot of Good It Did Enron

I find this whole meme of Enron + Republicans = corruption fascinating. A fat lot of good that did Enron, which is out of business and the top dogs you mention are either in jail, about to go, or awaiting trial. If they were so totally tied into the corrupt power structure how could this happen? I mean if there was this vast political conspiracy funded by Enron wouldn't they still be in business and wouldn't the judges all be bought off now?

I also find it ironic that when Enron was on the ropes and looking for some kind of government bailout to save them, they didn't turn to their corrupt Republican pals but Robert Rubin, a Democratic Secretary of Treasury under Clinton. He made the rounds of Capital Hill looking for help for Enron. Which they didn't get.

It doesn't really fit with the assertions of vast corrupt cabals controlling everything behind the scenes.

WE don't Want. WE HAVE

The House of Representatives is the people's house. Take it.

So frustrating to hear 'we want our democracy/country/power back,' or variations on the theme. We don't WANT. The opposite of WANT is HAVE.

We HAVE our democracy / country / power. Take it.

Take it means DO It. WE run for Congress, the House. WE elect US, ourselves. Forget / ignore The Media. DO It ourselves. Forget / ignore Professional Politicians' issues, games, charges, delays, parlimentarianisms. DO try this at home, be a Politician. TAKE it means DO it means 4-point-3 hours in front of the TV changes into hours on the internet. Writing. Publishing your thoughts, not to perish. Organizing. Connecting people to person to people. Get a 'phone tree' email shotgun set up, and prune the tree and flourish it. We need you for the '06 elections. Either Stand for election, or Coordinate emailing for someone who does, (an email quick-tree replaces TV and radio ad buys; email tree replaces mass media), or get out of the way.

Nam Vet posting above -- YOU, you run for Congress. It don't take nothing special to be in U.S. House, lose the mystery myth. Attitude -- IMPEACH -- trumps education accreditation hocuspocus-CommonPeopleNOTGoodEnuffRichEnuffSpecial EliteEnuff-prestidigitation.

Ranter against Vatican papacy, above -- YOU read like a neocon planted troll, here to remind us all the troubles woe is us woe is us we face. Don't NEED no more stinking enemies, battles to fight, diversions to ponder. Yeah, Catholicism's parochial fearmongering scorchearthed the last two millenniums, and the current crop of nazis grew out of it. Not now. NOW is TAKE the HOUSE. Clean sweep the HOUSE. And START ImPEACHing. Later, change the calendar -- from the Catholic's, and adopt a different one, so it's not the year 2005 anymore, it's like 4700 (Chinese), 5770 (Hebrew), 1410 (Islamic) or others, cross off the Catholic, (sure would screw up computer programs, Linux would recover soonest), HOUSE enactment of a new calendar goes a long way toward fitting people with a new frame of mind. I say count days, not years, and my vote is for the 'Julian Date' system, such as: Jan. 1, 2006, is J.D. 2,453,797. Count forward.

TAKE the HOUSE. It's the people's HOUSE. IMPEACH #1 and #2. Presto, Speaker of the HOUSE is POTUS, in '07.

Oh-eight is too late. Don't wait.

Some of the mechanicals as I imagine, but all join in.

TAKE over TAKE back TAKE control TAKE democracy -- ALL is OURS in '06.

Ignore what Washington sez, ('It can't be done,' e.g.) Do NOT buy broadcast mass media ads. DO ALL internet, email, word of mouth, everybody in the country is only 3-point-5 degrees of separation. Do NOT waste energy to 'Get The Message OUT,' screw the mass media -- Get The Message AROUND. PASS it on. If mass media wants to know what's happenin' then they can come see and go report it. Mass Media comes to see US. They can go however far OUT with their message they have to. PASS it on. Copy-n-Paste this in your email and smoke it. Those that get it, YOU PASS it on. Those that fight it, YOU pass them by. TAKE the HOUSE, then enact Ban on Broadcast Political Ads, exactly in the model of the Ban on Broadcast Cigarette Ads. Same reasons: Political Ads addictive, Pol.Ads deleterious to public health and safety. Then the campaign money chests don't matter where the money's from -- they can't spend it on broadcast programming. They can buy print ads. Ignore what Washington sez and TAKE the HOUSE.

TAKE the HOUSE and IMPEACH. Then enact ANY LAW WE LIKE. Repeal every law Cheney saw, or more.

The campaigning mess of jamming and contention that might pour into the internet -- Who is friend? Who is foe? -- is easier to sort out with a focus on the prize. If it talks to help to TAKE the HOUSE: Friend. If it argues or forgets: Foe.

Copy 1994 Newtie, like Pizzo sez. Newtie 'nationalized the House races' using Contract On USA. 70some signers, 40some elected.

Start with Contract With Democracy. Whole contract is one word: IMPEACH. Whoever signs the pledge contract is eligible to run for House, even Democrats and Republicans but it is so NOT about D's and R's. It's about nothing but IMPEACH. The IMPEACH Party. Democrat is not the opposite of Republican. R's down is NOT D's up, this ain't a teeter-totter. If D's choose to stand for election, fine, go, say what you stand for, have a good one. Most D's are equally culpable. Pizzo sez, 'Why didn't media report the crimes? Get 'em on it.' Stephen: Why didn't Dem's report the crimes -- email to constituents, at least? And: Get 'em out, Media and CorporateCongress all, OUT.
WE can DO It. Elect US. TAKE our HOUSE.

Oh-eight is too late. Don't wait.

Elect the masses

435 stand for election to the House of Representatives together on the IMPEACH slate.

Maybe several candidates per district, I don't know, talk among ourselves, make a clearing house website. Forget the Senate, it's another distraction, they'll catch on, Do what WE Do. There's the rigged voting machines. Two aspects:
Not all 435 districts can be rigged -- Elect in MASS. The mass slate of four-thirty-five. Some, 300(?), get through.
The 'qualify for ballot' hoops to jump through, party politics pukes: Elect WRITE IN candidates. For one thing, it makes a paper trail. WRITE-IN candidacy has the least regulation because it is so ignored. The WRITE-IN name could be rigged. Candidate changes name to JIM PEACH or KIM PEACH, in every district, Elect 435 JIM and KIM IMPEACHers.
WRITE-IN vote for Jim Peach. WRITE-IN vote for Kim Peach.

WE are coming for OUR House, Wash,D.C. Everybody out. Shut up. OUT. IMPEACH #1 and #2, then Speaker Jim Peach is President Jim Peach. That's TWO branches of government looking peachy. IMPEACH Supreme Court (Alito in, '06? Alito OUT, '07) and all through the Justice Dept. WE just vote and badda-bing, they are gone. It is called Power. If goners got a gripe, tell it to the replacement judge.
IMPEACH all through the Exec.Departments. Many go to prison.
IMEACH current Congress people, even retroactively. Many go to prison.

After the IMPEACHment massacre:

Change the ways and means. Full speed ahead on New Energy. Forget crude oil. And it's empty anyway. When it is gone, it is gone, whether we forget it on purpose or not. Abolish the Pentagon and militarism. Just vote and close the purse strings. It leaves a half-a-Trillion dollars a year, right there, to work with. WE'll figure it out. Abolish the CIA. Everybody out of the building. WE'll call you back if other countries give us any trouble about shutting down the Ameri-war machine. Don't call us. Go retire somewhere.

Oh, and DO Consti2tional Convention. DEMOCRACY, Release 2-point-0. It's about time.

Speaker of Our HOUSE the next President, in '07. Oh-eight is too late. Wash,D.C.: Everybody out. WE, the lunchbucket Johnnies and frazzled Joanies, the lot of US can do a better Congress job, it is not complicated. Just vote. It is called Power.

A good article as far as it goes. I read these assessments in all the alternative political media and realize that only a very small percentage of those who vote will ever read them, partly because they don't know the alternative media is there and also because they don't care to look. The culture of corruption is so large that it includes politicians of every stripe and their lackeys and includes the mainstream media.
Impeachment of the leaders of this mess our apathy and ignorance has gotten us into would be just a small first step. Prosecution and imprisonment by the World Court for crimes against humanity would be the next step. But given the fact that we have even lost the power of our vote, I'm not sure how we would ever get there because of the money and political influence= Power equation.

I have a question that I would like to put to all of those conservatives who believe in a liberal biased media:

In view of all of the scandals & "Gates" that the media gleefully jumped on during the Clinton Years why wouldn't a liberal media have dogged the Hammer and his Nails for the last 5 years?

There is no liberal media. Where are you Bill Moyers & Phil Donohue? Long gone, that is where.

There is a corporate monstrosity that metastasizes wherever & whenever it suits the bottom line--a corporation's only reason for being.

If it needs the mantle of a citizen to gain profits by avoiding a constitutional law voila! It is a citizen!

If it needs the protection of a non-citizen to gain profits by avoiding a civil law, voila! It is a non-citizen!

Where do these legal but amoral ideas come from? Our schools, our clubs, our instituions and our churches.

Corporations are the Holy Grail of Capitalism. Profits continue, nothing personal, whatever, here is your pink slip, have a nice day. IN GOD WE TRUST.

Welcome to America.

To all you Bush haters, it doesn't matter what was said and done; it only matters how you FEEL.

There is no rhyme or reason to these people. They are unpredictable, with the exception that they like to peddle hate, fear and anger. That is why most people just silently ignore them, and then at election time, go to the poles an vote the lunatics down. I find it entertaining.
