Ambassador de Sade

By John Gorenfeld, AlterNet. Posted November 8, 2005.

Bush rewarded one of his loyalists with the ambassadorship to Italy -- despite his past as the founder of an cult-like teen rehab clinic.

Among our president's appointments of GOP activists to important posts, we've done worse than Melvin Sembler, the Ambassador to Italy who couldn't speak Italian. Unlike the FEMA chief, who had real responsibilities, Sembler sometimes found himself a fifth wheel around his own embassy. As the Washington Monthly has reported, the scandal that claimed Scooter Libby's job last month may have sprung from secret Rome meetings between neocons, an Iran-Contra figure and an Italian intelligence boss who later pushed phony WMD documents -- all behind Sembler's back.

But where Melvin Sembler, 74, demands attention is as an object lesson in how cruelty can be redeemed by the transformative power of political donations. For 16 years, Sembler, with his wife Betty, directed the leading juvenile rehab business in America, STRAIGHT, Inc., before seeing it dismantled by a breathtaking array of institutional abuse claims by mid-1993. Just one of many survivors is Samantha Monroe, now a travel agent in Pennsylvania, who told The Montel Williams show this year about overcoming beatings, rape by a counselor, forced hunger, and the confinement to a janitor's closet in "humble pants" -- which contained weeks of her own urine, feces and menstrual blood. During this "timeout," she gnawed her cheek and spat blood at her overseers. "I refused to let them take my mind," she says of the program. The abuse took years to overcome.

"It sticks inside you," she told Williams, "it eats at your soul." She told AlterNet that she was committed at 12, in 1980, for nothing more than being caught with a mini-bar-sized liquor bottle, handed out by a classmate whose mother was a flight attendant. Samantha's mother suspected more. A STRAIGHT expert was on hand to nurture fears her daughter was a drug fiend, not to be trusted. So the small blond junior high-schooler was lured under false premises to one of the warehouse-like outposts of STRAIGHT.

Overcome by dread in the lobby, Samantha tried to run but was hauled into the back by older girls. Inside, as was standard operating procedure, she began the atonement process that cost over $12,000 a year: all-day re-education rituals in which flapping the arms ("motivating") and chanting signaled submission to "staying straight." She was coerced, she says, into confessing to being a "druggie whore" who went down on truckers for drugs. "You're forced to confess crimes you never committed." (Some survivors call it extortion.)

Melvin Sembler stepped down earlier this year as Our Man In Rome -- he also served under the first Bush as Ambassador to Australia. Were Monroe's story unique, his STRAIGHT clinics might still be in business. Instead, his creation, which he stubbornly defends, closed in 1993 after reports of sexual abuse, beating and stomping to boys called "faggots" for hours while being spat upon -- humiliation so bad that a Pennsylvania judge recently ruled it potentially mitigating of a Death Row sentence for a former STRAIGHT teen who committed a homophobic murder.

Although prosecutors closed the clinics, six-figure settlements sucked it dry, and state health officials yanked its licenses after media reports of teen torture and cover-up, Sembler himself escaped punishment. As one of the preeminent and hardest-working GOP fundraisers, Sembler has received the honor of living during the George W. Bush presidency at the Villa Taverna, the official residence for the U.S. ambassador, which has the largest private garden in Rome. One night in May at "The Magic Kingdom" (as Mel and Betty call it), the dining room filled with smoke from fine cigars, as the ambassador entertained Bush Sr. and an entourage -- until Betty complained that the old friends were stinking up "my house," the Washington Post reported.

He's come home, but still wafting across national drug policy is the influence of his STRAIGHT, which has legally changed its identity to the Drug Free America Foundation (director Calvina Fay denies it's the same organization but the name change is listed in Florida corporate filings). Subsidized by tax dollars, it lobbies for severe narcotics policies and workplace drug testing, with an advisory board that includes the like of Gov. Jeb Bush and his wife Columba, and Homeland Security Director of Public Safety Christy McCampbell. A more pressing issue is that former overseers of Sembler's company, true believers in the STRAIGHT model, are still running spin-off businesses that treat teens with the old methods.

Starting out STRAIGHT

The story begins in 1976 when Sembler, who'd made his fortune in Florida real estate, founded STRAIGHT from the ashes of The Seed -- an earlier program suspended by the U.S. Senate for tactics reminiscent, said a senator, of Communist POW camps. But as the Reagan years rolled into view, and a climate of fear nurtured a Shock and Awe approach to teens, the Semblers found a new world of acceptance for an anything-goes treatment business, meting out punishment in privately run warehouses. Endorsers from Nancy Reagan to George H.W. Bush lent their names to the program, celebrating a role model weapon in the "war on drugs."

here it is, in all its darkness; the essence of what is so wicked about the bush family.

they don't care where the money came from, as long as its in their pockets, and if you kiss the ring, they'll make you an ambassador. it stretches across generations.

why aren't they viewed as the greatest fiends of all time is an indictment of American sensibilities.

I can think of no other name to call these people than dark, black evil belongs to the lowest of the seven layer of Hell. Most horror stories are not this sick or dark. No wonder Florida is racked with Hurricanes every year. Bush and company create this same program for prisoners. I can think of no other name than demon spawn. People may not believe in a god or goddess, but there sure is dark, damning evil on this plain of existence. Bush and his family deserve the name of antichrist.

It is futile to be angry with the politicians. It is the system that is wrong. As long as people vote for which candidate they would rather have a beer with, we will have a stinking government. Both parties are owned by campaign contributors. Your vote and mine only choose the party that will carry out their agenda. We have to take control of both parties and make them work on our issues. click on we can do it

The surprise is that this is no surprise.

Great article. The most important point is that children are often the victims of those who claim to love them and want to help them. The second most important point is that evil rewards evil, with large servings of public largesse for those feeding at the corrupt political trough.

I am crying

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
As I read this article all the tears that I have held back and the anger toward Bush and his thugs just came pouring out. I do not apologize for my tears. These are not a sign of weakness, but of letting off stress and coming to terms with the distress that is a constant in my life as an American. These people have taken our children who were relatively normal and healthy and broken them like they are enemies and not our children. My heart breaks for our children and I feel angry. I, for one, apologize to every one of those children for what MY tax dollars perpetrated upon them. When my tears dry, I will write letters to my Congressman and Senators. I do not know what else can be done, but I will do it when I find out what that is. As for sicko Sembler and his head-up-her-butt wife, I have this to say-- there is no place that God cannot find you both when God decides that it is time for you two to pay for your crimes. God does hear the cries of the poor and the last time I checked scripture it was the rich guy that was burning in Hell and not the poor one. But sicko Sembler and his as*dorable wife do not really believe that THEY will be held accountable for Their wicked deeds because They got the kids to do it to the kids, right? Hummm, seems to me that God can see right through that ploy (even the part about the Senators and whoever else were blinded by the glare of all that money they were given by Sicko and As*dorable). And as for these prison camp treatment centers for kids, I think that continually putting these kids stories out on the internet and keeping them and their stories in the light of truth will shut those centers down faster than any other action. For the most part parents love their children and want the best for their kids. Knowledge is power. Get the information out to high schools via the PTAs or PTOs and thereby to the parents about these criminal centers (give the names of the places and relevant information) and let the parents know about the REAL treatment centers where their kids and they and their families will be safe.

COMPASSIONATE CONSERVATISM IN ALL ITS GLORY! And ignorance, and sadism, and stupidity, and greed, etc., etc.!

This administration has pushed our standard of living to a level so low, that it will take many, many years after they leave office, for us to climb out of the deep hole we now find ourselves in. Years of progress on all fronts have been squandered, and stopped dead in its tracks, and it is almost like we are now living at the turn of the last century, instead of this new century! HOW PATHETIC, AND HOW SAD!

I am grateful too that Alternet would carry our story. I am a survivor of Straight and have a dear sweet Niece and Nephew that NO WAY IN Hell would I want these BASTARDS to get a hold of. I am glad this story is coming to light, I think the public deserves to know exactly who these people are that claim to be "in charge" of us. I don't care if we're talkin Bush - Sembler - Miller Newton, they're all losers in my book. They look out only for themselves, I don't care if were talking about a war in the Middle East, price gouging at the fuel pumps, destroying the working class in this county and the living wage that supports our economy, Hell, enough is enough, we have to take a stand against these elite few and vote them out before they sell us out. "Free market" my ass. Try free for the taking by big business.

You wonder how the CIA is furnished in their methods of sucking information out of Al Qaeda and other extremists?, well you have us (the survivors of Straight,) that were tortured in YOUR own back yard to thank for that. All those methods used on the "terrorists" like keep em up all night, confusin em, givin em different times to sleep, denying em proper food and enough water, over exercising em, in-your-face drilling em, no date for em to look forward to leave, sexual guilt methods. My God people, it's all there.

I know I sound angry, but really I'm just sad, sad that it has taken this long to get notice, I am tired of these monsters getting away with what they do all the time to all of us. I really hope these stories can get more attention so that they youth-torture places that are ran like Straight was can be closed down. Thanks for letting me rant, thanks again for running this story Alternet!

As if this is not bad enough, "faith-based" addictions treatment facilities use many of the same non-clinical "treatments" as STRAIGHT: prayer, bible study, and unpaid work. And when a victim goes into withdrawal DT's or psychosis, they conveniently get dropped off at the nearest hospital emergency room. Because many of the "consumers" are penniless and homeless, after their short hospital stay, they return to the "faith-based" hell. Their track record is about the same as STRAIGHT and SAFE. There's money in that old-time religion... but only for the Pharisees.

I would like to see more background on Dr. Miller Newton. I am quite disturbed to see he is claimed to be a member of the Antiochian Orthodox Church. I have presented this article to the international Orthodox Christian community for their feedback. I want to know the truth about Dr. Newton.

This article attests to the value of 12 Step programs like AA and NA which are anonymous and free and spiritual. Recovery should not be 'big business'. Anyone who profits off another person's illness is ill themselves and in need of serious help.

The cycle of abuse is difficult to break
Posted by: ScottP on Nov 8, 2005 9:48 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
This sounds to me like another horrible consequence of the cycle of abuse that leads successive generations to participate in further abuse (and wars and violence and numerous other wrongs) in the misguided attempt to rationalize what happened to them. Many people think that child abuse is a poor people's plight, but being from an executive's family in an area where most families were led by white male executives, I can say first hand that abuse is common among the wealthy, but just takes a more mental form than in poorer areas. An examination of the current administration shows signs of post-abuse adults, and there is documentation to support that the symptoms are not coincidental.

What can we do? How about, first of all, recognizing the importance of treating the effects of abuse as well as all mental illness with respect. When a friend is seeking help from a therapist, be sure to encourage and support them. Don't use derogatory terms to refer to those with mental illnesses, it's already hard enough for them. Your empathy may or may not be rewarded, but if you're callous it will certainly harm society.

I lived in St. Petersburg, Florida when first Seed and then later Straight held the key to "straightening out" kids with drug problems. A close friend's granddaughter at the age of fourteen went through this program. The humiliation and physical abuse she suffered left her with deep psychological scars but also helped to launch her into a prolonged period of hair-raising rebellion, resentment and confusion. It never ceases to amaze me how the Bushes manage to stock their administration with the very worst of the worst. How do they do that?

One of the peculiarities of our Federalist system, is that every State regulates private reformatories, camps, schools, etc. as their local voters see fit -- assuming the voters are paying attention at all.

Not surprisingly, where regulations are lax, or politicians are cooperative, hellholes-for-profit spring up. Also, not surprisingly, there is a correlation between right wing politics in a State, and horrific institutions for the confinement of disobedient and disappointing children operating there.

People whose concern goes beyond posting "ain't it awful" essays on blogs, might want to have a look at this website and perhaps put themselves on its mailing list:

I read an interview recently with a retired military guy. An important top-security-clearance person whose name and job I'm sorry to say I forget. But he said a memorable thing. He said there was a pattern he'd noticed over the course of his career: the more corrupt an institution is, the less qualified its leaders are. Obvious, I know. Like Newton's laws. The people who most accurately represent what the institution is about will rise to the top. If serial child abusers with a penchant for extreme forms of torture are rising the ranks, that is a reflection of the character of the organization. We should not be shocked that Dick Cheney opposes the McCain bill. We should not be surprised by the administration's efforts to assassinate the characters of Joe Wilson and Valerie Plame. We should not scratch our heads and wonder why George Bush refused to meet with Cindy Sheehan. Their greed is as axiomatic as the wetness of water. When they do things that confound and horrify us, we would do well to remember that this situation has not developed overnight. It has been festering for a long time. Freezing away in my little desert town this winter, I plan to calmly ponder the inevitability of causes and effects, in the hope that this will help me to know how to handle the atrocities that have been, are being, and will be committed in our names.

I am the Samantha that was written about in this article. Although it happened decades ago, I still carry the horror as if it were today. Every day I awake in fear. It used to be a fear that I would be returned to the "Building" and "Started Over" Now I am afraid that I will end up in an ABYSS, a prison where I will never have my voice heard again. As I research the history of STRAIGHT INC and MEL SEMBLER et al I find that their circle has grown to overwhelming proportions. Mr. Sembler although the director of the GREATEST TORTURE OF AMERICAN CHILDREN, is on the BOD of the HOLOCUST MUSEUM IN ST PETE FLORIDA, Irony at its worst.
While he travels the world, SURVIVORS are barely getting along. Our minds and spirits were so badly tortured I am not certain Ill ever be able to reach my fullest potential.
America was founded on the liberties that were denied me and 40,000 plus other AMERICAN CHILDREN in STRAIGHT INC.
SURVIVORS have to suffer the rest of their lives, knowing we were tossed into the shallow graveyard called STRAIGHT INC. with a price on our heads that made STRAIGHT a million dollar industry, and made the Republican party who they are today, sneaky, manipulating, liars.
We will probably never recognise fully the degredation, torture, humiliation and psychological murder of thousands upon thousands of children from Straight inc. or any other existing "Behavior Modification Programs".
I wish for justice, I wish for my life back, I wish that none of this ever happened, I wish that this stops now before another child is tortured. Before another person committs suicide because they can not accept the pain and mind bending of STRAIGHT vs REALITY.
I carry the DOGMA of STRAIGHT in my head my toughts are constantly wandering to the forced docterine and I have to REMIND MYSELF to STOP.
I wake nightly to change my bedding from night sweats, I fear that I will never be able to "GET A LIFE" "LET IT GO" "TRUST, LOVE, BELIEVE" I fear that there is another girl sitting in time out waiting for their captor to show mercy.
I FEAR AND I HOPE.
I hope that one day we will be afforded justice. I hope that these programs are made to be illeagle and noted for their unethical, immoral practices. I hope one day to sleep the night through.

Please excuse the tacky approach, but, I am writting a book on my experiences in STRAIGHT and what happened after with HRS Florida, the cover up and Devereux GA the place HRS hid me during the investigation of the abuses at STRAIGHT. So if there is a co writer and and publishing house out there who would be intrested please contact me. The only 2 things Ill insist on is HONESTY and a PORTION OF THE proceeds from the sale of the book be DONATED to CHILD ADVOCACY.
I've already written a rough draft, and hope to title it DRUGGIE WHORE
and other names they called me.
Id also like to publish a book for women. My journey to sanity, LIFE AFTER TORTURE.
Thank you so very much for your telling the truth.
Samantha

This sort of thing should not even be able to happen. The only reason it happens is because the government has skewered things.

For one thing, these kids and young adults are held against their will. How can these institutions like STRAIGHT hold them? Because there are laws on the books that infringe on the rights of these youths and give a special privilege to the institution. Repeal these laws and institutions who hold people against their wills will be prosecuted for kidnapping and false imprisonment as they should be.

If kids could simply walk out, like any free human being should be able to, then the institutions would have to either treat them well enough that they want to stay, or go broke for lack of business.

So where do parents fit in? Parents are responsible for the raising of their children, but parents do not *own* the children like slaves as one human being cannot own another. Parents need to be mindful of their children's individual rights.

But, our government is way out of line, not only in this regard but practically every other.

And, as much as I strongly oppose Bush, it didn't start with him. It started many decades ago.

See my blog at http://www.alicelillieandher.blogspot.com for my own take on it.

Alice Lillie

Samantha, I've always liked your posts on Alternet, for as many of them as I've seen.

Can I just ask you a (probably silly) question about your username?? Is "Vimes" your real surname - is it a surname (?) or are you indeed taking the name as a feminized version of that found in the Terry Pratchett novels, Sam Vimes??

I'm a fan too!

... with the utmost of fascinated horror and sympathy, on dedicated sites for YEARS. TheStraights

Nice of a "mainstream alternative" (!) site like Alternet to put something up about it... at last.

(I'm a Brit and SAFE, STRAIGHT etc (only in America, we hope!) haven't been covered in the British press/TV at all: although certain "specialty schools" like Tranquility Bay in Jamaica have. Hey Alternet - how's about an article about one or more of those?)

John Gorenfeld is going on Mark Levine's show ("The Inside Scoop on Washington") TONIGHT (Thursday, November 10) at 7 pm Eastern Time (6 Central, 5 Mountain, 4 Pacific) to discuss STRAIGHT and Melvin Sembler.

You can listen live at www.RadioInsideScoop.com. And there's a toll free number to call in. The show is one hour long, and Mark's devoting the entire hour to the topic.

I've heard Mark Levine before. He is terrific, one of the rare progressive radio hosts that really is interesting and knows his stuff. And there are lots of comments on his blog already.

O man, I just stumbled on this today....I can't say I'm suprised, but I sure am sickened. As my SO and I have often said, several times a day, actually, these people, they have no bottom. Evil and disgusting throughout the entire lot. What on earth happened to the Bush's to turn them into such toilet scum?

As long as the majority of people keep themselves ignorant as to what really goes on in this world very little changes. Possibly one of the most vile things I've seen is convincing a 14 year old kid that because they smoked pot (a few times) that they were an addict needing a lifelong treatment like other addicts alcoholics do. Believe this cops, prosecutors, judges, probation/parole, prison employees, treatment providers, urine testers, etc. etc. are all part of the $60 billion drug war bureaucracy. By virtue of their employment it taints their ability to give unbiasaed info as to whether our 90 year fiasco using the criminal justice system to enforce the unenforceable i.e. mans need to alter oneself is nothing but an abject failure. Almost anyone looking at the evidence logically would have to conclude it is and will always be a failure. This is just one story of sick phucking perverts suckering others to celebrate their sadistic unscientific ways to "save the children". My God what kind of people run this country.

The common thread here is authoritarianism. If there's a Gitmo (actually a mini-gulag) for foreigners suspected of terrorism, why not a Gitmo for "rebellious" teenagers?

Coercive Thought Reform Damages America's Children

I was in Cincinnati Straight from October 1984 until February 1986. I was admitted against my will even though I had NEVER tried drugs in my life and had only been drunk once. I was however "rebellious." I was considered a "liar not to be believed" and a "dry druggie." While in Straight, I lived in a constant state of anxiety, stress, and fear. The verbal assault, humiliation, and other abuses I either witnessed or experienced in Straight were unbearable. I felt like I was in hell that would never end. Then, after graduating the program and after my 18th birthday, I was kidnapped at the direction of Straight staff to try to force me back into the program because I had broken an aftercare rule, no dating for 6 months, by holding hands with a guy. Fortunately I was rescued by police. But charges were never pressed against Straight. I have been haunted by Straight for 20 years. I recently was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, yes because of Straight, had to take a leave of absence from work, take off from law school this semester, and I am in counseling. I will not however allow Straight Inc. to ruin my life, one way or another. No child deserves what we, the "clients" of Straight, Inc. endured. (I posted a similar message elsewhere)

I have read comments from people hearing our story for the first time to the effect....what can I do? To borrow one of Ginger's expressions if I may, "Rampant Talking Out In Group!" Talking about it to people you know, merely spreading the word will help. Some of the biggest obstacles in stopping child abuse disguised as treatment has been 1) the understandable silence of scared, traumatized survivors and 2) public ignorance. I do not fault the public however. What really goes on behind the walls of the current generation of troubled teen facilities or past ones such as Straight, and its current spin off programs has been a closely guarded secret. Its time the secret got out. Breaking a child down in order to "help" rebuild a child is not a valid "therapy." This method is coercive thought reform and is a highly destructive technique that inflicts long term damage to children emotionally, psychologically, spiritually, mentally, etc.

Thank you Mr. Gorenfeld and Alternet for taking an important step in educating the American public of the story of Straight Survivors and the ties to the Republican party. I cant even begin to express how grateful I am that our story is finally being heard.

What facility did Jeb Bush send his daughter to for rehab?

Anyone know?

Does he put HIS drug-addicted and misbehaving children and nieces in these "fine" programs?

Lest we forget, Sembler and his company have been involved in trying to silence protests at his downtown St Pete development, BayWalk.

You can read further details of Sembler Co using police and political pressure to try and stifle dissent against the administration. The jackasses even tried to buy the public sidewalk! http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/8/10/10386/7939

Yes, you are right, mim. There was a documentary about it on BBC2 (the "more serious alternative twin" to BBC1, in Britain.) But we over here didn't hear much more about it after that. Some articles in the Guardian, too, by a woman named Decca Aitkenhead. But no big coverage...

I am a survivor of one of the CEDU schools in Idaho called Rocky Mountain Academy (now defunct). Cedu was the brainchild of Mel Wasserman and Synanon members. It was not just abusive but out and out brainwashing and cult-like. I just stumbled upon a website called Fornits.com 2 days ago and the floodgates of nearly 2 decades of repressed memories came pouring out...I finally told my Father today about what methods were used in our so called "therapy" and he was absolutely horrified. He is going to be even more horrified when he sees this article. Although I am an emotional wreck right now...I somehow feel like I can understand what the Boys molested by Catholic Priests went through when the memories first surfaced...but after 2 days of crying I had to say something...all I can say is PLEASE PARENTS...KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE GETTING YOUR CHILD INTO BEFORE YOU SIGN HIM UP...AND REST ASSURED, ALL THE SCHOOLS BROCHURES ARE MISREPRESENTATIONAL AS FAR AS MY EXPERIENCE WENT AND I'M STILL PAYING 20 YEARS LATER YET THE SCHOOLS GET SHUT DOWN IN ONE PART OF THE COUNTRY AND REOPEN ELSEWHERE AND YOU'LL NEVER KNOW THE CONNECTION.

to read more about these schools and peoples experiences go to the fornits.com forums and just pick a school...there are plenty to choose from...Straight is there also...you have only heard one story out of THOUSANDS still waiting to be told and there are many more that have yet to come out of the woodwork and make our voices heard.

I am a resident and native of St Pete /Seminole Florida and I can tell you as someone who personally knows the children of one of the above named ambassadors. They were the biggest druggies of all in high school and later on in life in fact one of them was a patient at Straight. I'm sure she was not treated like the rest. She had a lot of drug and alcohol isses all through her life. I remember the
