Aryan Jihad and the Elephant in America's Living Room

By Meera Subramanian, The Revealer. Posted October 29, 2005.

Just weeks after Katrina alerted the country to our massive unresolved race issues, the media again missed the big picture of the Toledo riots.

Here's a riddle for you: How can a small neo-Nazi march, organized to draw attention to the alleged persecution of white people by black people, and a counter-demonstration of approximately 600 blacks, take place in Ohio and not spur a single news report to directly address the question of race, except to deny its role in the events? Not six weeks after Hurricane Katrina supposedly awakened this country to the fact that it had some latent race issues to deal with, the media once again missed an opportunity to deal with the murky territory of race in the great melting pot of the United States.

There were over a hundred arrests in Toledo, Ohio after rioting broke out last Saturday. The rally organized by the National Socialist Movement ("America's Nazi Party"), drew only a couple dozen white supremacist demonstrators, who gathered to bring attention to a neighborhood where they believed whites were being threatened by the presence of black gang violence. The Aryan Nation website goes into descriptive detail of the alleged abuses. Members of the black community responded by taking to the streets and the crowd ended up directing their anger towards the police after the neo-Nazis left.

One report from the Associated Press dominated the media, repeating quotes from a defensive mayor and a startled police chief. A CNN live feed summed up the situation in Toledo with "What a mess," and then, without skipping a beat, transitioned into: "All right, a sign that New Orleans is approaching normal..."

In an Aljazeera piece, Toledo Mayor Jack Ford denied that race was even an element. "I don't think it was race relations at all. It was some gang members who had real or imagined grievances and took it as an opportunity to speak in their own way over the march." His statements, along with other city officials, generally took on a defensive tone, attempting to justify their position and their actions as they walked the delicate line between first amendment rights and civil peace while ignoring any exploration of the underlying reasons for what happened.

Toledo Police Chief Mike Navarre was onto something when he said, "This is not a police problem, this is a social problem." But his statement was left dangling in the AP wire, as was any credible attempt to explore such "real or imagined grievances," that brought six hundred people, mostly young black men, out into the streets to throw rocks at cops, overturn vehicles, set buildings on fire.

Apparently, there's no time to pause and begin to answer such questions. Instead, what prevailed in the press coverage was blame, for those who failed to contain the crisis, for those who exploited it, for those who sparked it. Bill White, the spokesperson for the neo-Nazis, blamed the violence on the police. The police, in turn, "blamed the mayhem on a disorganized group of the community's youth."

The overall lack of reporting is of note as well. By Monday, two days after the event, The Toledo Blade had a dozen articles listed about the incident, but the national press seemed to have forgotten Saturday's events. Even The New York Times relied on a basic AP feed that focused on the unheeded pleas of local ministers and community leaders for a peaceful response to the neo-Nazis.

I need to look up my history, but I don't think that Hitler was too fond of Christians either. Obviously he wasn't too endeared with the Jews,...( well, look at who's in charge on the USA nowadays ) , so he may have had a point. A warped mind, but I can see where he was coming from. But,...where did he stand on the issue of Christianity ?

Fascinating... Where are the factual reports?

I love that I can find this sort of underexposed story on Alternet. But where can I go to find the news reporting? There are no links to even the so-called "news reporting" from standard mainstream sources that I expect will fail to really cover the story. I'd have really appreciated, if it exists, a link to the local Toledo TV news video. (I just found some Fox video. Is it anathema to Alternet to link to Fox? They often make me ill, too, but if there were a link to something else I'd avoid them.)

Thanks for the perspective and analysis, but I'd especially like to read a clear account of the events -- or even an account of the events now, not just some of the responses to the events and the media analysis and the bigger issues (for which I remain grateful).

The Fourth Estate has been failing at it's mission to investigate and expose the truth for many reasons.

A prime example is that over 1,000 journalists covered the drama of the 'disengagement' in Gaza, but largely ignored the fact that these colonists have been financially compensated and have now been illegally resettled in the West Bank?

Did any of those 1,000 journalists bother to report on the illegal separation/security/apartheid wall that does not follow the Green Line but is grabbing Palestinian water, land and separating Palestinians from Palestinians?

Have they exposed the fact that 3 Billion USA tax dollars and 3 Billion in military equiptment go to Israel annually and that since 1948 over 100 Billion USA tax dollars have gone to support a democracy that denies basic human rights to millions because of the violent actions of a few who rebell against the Occupation and Oppression?

This middle aged grandmother will contine to do the muckracking and reporting on these issues and more on WAWA until the fourth estate honors their commission to Investigate, Expose and Report The Truth :

Yes, the US has a deep-seated, chronic problem of racial strife. It was called "The American Dilema" in a major study written in the 1940s. It's been a part of American life ever since the first slave was brought from Africa and, yes, Americans missed the best opportunity in my lifetime to do something positive by letting Dr. King be assassinated.

But one dimension of the whole problem is journalists who can get published playing both sides of the street. This article comes across as written by someone who has to bend over backward to make a case.

Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman" declared "attention must be paid." Not to race, but to an America where the only thing that mattered was wealth.

Yes, attention must be paid to race. And to gangs, and to drug laws that allow gangs to earn their income by selling drugs and buying off law enforcement and corrupting the courts and electing politicians. (Same as it was in the Roaring 20s when booze was king.)

Yes, attention must be paid: our nation has been made sick by VIOLENCE OF ALL KINDS, including the military-industrial, the prison-industrial, the capitalist-industrial complexes. Ike told us, We have a complex!

We are a violent people. We entertain ourselves with it. We wallow in it. We drive the freeways and slow down to gape wherever there may be blood on the highway. (Usually it's just someone changing a tire, but you never know, right? Wouldn't want to miss out on someone else's misery.)

So this writer wants more incidents of it in the headlines? Gimme a break.

How can Nazis follow the King of the Jews

It must suck to be a Nazi!! How miserable must you be to hate everybody on earth that isn't you? How can a dumbass call himself a Christian, who follows the teachings of a man "born of the house of David" . And a Nazi who hates all Jews!!!

I'm sure they have a prefectly rational explanation for this. Some wild piece of bullshit going back before any of us were around that will explain in the wildest acts of fiction that Jesus was not a Jew, the Bible was wrong, and they have the "real story".

Oh I'm quite sure they will have a long and poiniant story about the poor, pure, white race and how they were all screwed in pre-history by unnamed tribes of infedels and nobody knows but them! I'm sure this must be quite a tale to get the vast following of idiots that they have!!

I'm also sure this tale is probably the bigest load of shit that's ever been told!! (Well, maybee not the biggest! After all there was the Nixon years!!)

I Thought...

Great article -

you've asked some questions that a lot of us didn't even think about and also brought this matter to greater attention!

When I first saw the news report I thought it was mainstream media's way of keeping the "fear of black people" flame burning bright in the hearts of those white folk who might have been leaning towards compassion and action in the wake of katrina and some of the speeches at the millions more march.

That there are those people in this country who pull the media strings as well as media people themselves and others who are invested in keeping us (african americans and european americans) at each others throats
- not all for the same reasons mind you -
is no surprise
- but regardless the result equals the same thing -
for while we scrap eaters fight each other the bottom line is that we stay fragmented and therefore lack the political will necessary to make the kind of changes in our society that would alleviate most of the underlying reasons why we are angry in the first place.

For now here is what I would like to ask of media:

To agree amongs yourselves - print, radio, tv and film
that you will refrain from using the terms Black and White when referring to people -
That you will make every effort you can to determine a more accurate and respectful way of describing the story figures involved and if you cannot or will not address them by name then at least by description of more truer to their origins -
That failing to find any meaningful information as to description
then the absolute last resort will be: African-American or European American.

I believe this to be another crucial step up the ladder we've already started climbing towards a more peaceful co-existance.

It is too bad that the neighborhood didn't choose to completely ignore the Nazi rally. Nothing is worse for people like that than having no one pay attention to them. A prime chance to show them complete disdain was missed.

Christain ethics has nothing to do with Christian right wing

I hear a professor/author on the Charie Rose show talking about Christianity both here and in Europe. He said they are not the same by any stretch of the imagination. In American we worship Jesus, instead of worshipping the Creator of all. That there are two Jesus figures. One according to the beatiudes and all the others worship an non-ethical God/Jesus. Jesus preached love, taking care of the poor, the sick and the helpless. He never said worship me, but worship the Father. The new world Christian ethices swears it is ok to win their issues, no matter what the cost. It is ok to kill in Jesus' name. It is ok to lie, cheat and steall as long as you are saved and have been born again. They want the 10 commanments in schools and government offices, but then they turn around and break most of them to get some one elected, so they can have a judge who will over turn roe v wade, so we will quit killing even non-fertilzed eggs. Yet they turn around a wage war that is kill tens of thousand innocent Iraqis. That did not do this in the name of freedom for the people, but for oil. Bush and his supporter are no different in many ways from Germany pre-world war two.
