Racism Rising in the Golden State

By David Holthouse, Intelligence Report. Posted November 3, 2005.

As minorities move into the Southern California region known as the Inland Empire, white supremacists unleash a hate crime backlash.

CHINO HILLS, Calif. -- Despite all their big talk of honor, pride and the Aryan warrior's code, neo-Nazi Skinheads don't like a fair fight. Cowards by nature, they prefer to travel in packs and gang up on hate crime victims. The trio of Nazi skins laying in wait near a playground in a park here the morning of May 1 proved no different.

Around 11 a.m. that Sunday, a 21-year-old black man from the nearby city of Diamond Bar arrived at the park with a group of foster children from a group home where the man volunteered as an activities coordinator. He'd brought the kids to play basketball. As the players divided into teams, according to witnesses and police reports, the Skinheads swaggered over. They called the foster home worker a "nigger." They told him he'd made a big mistake by showing up in their park that morning with a bunch of mongrel brats.

The subject of their taunts and threats hastily tried to gather his charges to leave, but the Skinheads surrounded him and then attacked. They thought the odds were three to one. But they were wrong. Several of the kids jumped into the fray. Seconds later, two more adult employees of the group home arrived in a separate vehicle and heard the intended victim yelling for help. They also joined the combat. The Skinheads suddenly found themselves badly outnumbered in a fight they'd started.

One of them ran for their car, jumped in, gunned the engine, and promptly crashed into a park bench, then a metal exercise station, then a concrete barrier, and then, at last, a tree. Unfortunately, the damage did not disable the vehicle, and the Nazi at the wheel was able to throw it in reverse then roar across a field and toward the cluster of kids and adults from the group home, who by then had beaten one of the remaining Skinheads to the ground and were physically restraining the other while they waited for the police to arrive (several bystanders had called 911 on mobile phones).

The first officers on the scene found the enraged driver of the battered car wheeling erratically around the park, chasing the kids and group home workers in a deadly game of tag. They immediately blocked his vehicle with their own and arrested him for attempted murder. The other two Skinheads were taken into custody on charges of aggravated assault (one of them escaped from a local hospital that night after being treated for his injuries). A spokesman for the Chino Hills Sheriff's Department described the 20-year-old Skinhead driver as "a known white supremacist" who had previously been arrested for several racially motivated attacks in San Bernardino County. "He places himself in places where minorities will be and makes slurs," the spokesman said. Police found neo-Nazi pamphlets, stickers, and patches inside his car.

The attack in Chino Hills, a suburban city with about 70,000 residents, was no isolated incident. It occurred in the heart of the Inland Empire, a booming region of Southern California where tract homes are cheap, the air is filthy, and white power violence is on the rise.

The new minority

Made up of an area stretching from western Riverside County to the southwest corner of San Bernardino County, the Inland Empire used to be a sparsely populated, rural area of ranches, vineyards and farms, where whites were the clear and dominant majority.

All that has changed.

Driven from Los Angeles and San Diego by soaring housing prices, middle- and working-class black, Hispanic and Asian families have migrated to the Inland Empire in massive numbers, drawn by a surplus of comparatively affordable, big homes in sprawling, suburban-style developments. The rolling, high-desert terrain of the Inland Empire is now studded with more than 50 small to mid-sized cities containing a combined population of roughly 3 million. This continuing exodus inland from Southern California's expensive coastal cities has fueled large-scale residential, commercial and industrial development in the region. Horse pastures and orange groves have been paved over for strip malls and chain restaurants. Simultaneously, the Inland Empire has experienced rapid demographic shifts as more and more minorities move into a region that has long been a hotbed of white supremacist activity. Between 1990 and 2000, the Inland Empire's white population increased only 7%, while the number of blacks grew 61%, Asians 62% and Latinos 82%.

Whites are now a minority in the Inland Empire.

These seismic changes in the region's racial make-up have corresponded with a steady rise in hate crimes, including a particularly vicious spike in racially motivated violence and harassment in the past two years. During that period, as hate crimes dropped 10% statewide in California, the number of reported hate crimes in the Inland Empire shot up 20%. Last year, there were 148 hate crimes reported in the Inland Empire, most of them committed by racist Skinheads and other white supremacists.

This year, this disturbing trend has shown no signs of abating.

In January, in just one example, a gang of 10 neo-Nazi Skinheads attacked three Hispanic men outside a topless bar in Redlands, yelling racial slurs while they knocked the men to the ground then kicked them mercilessly. One of the victims suffered a broken arm. All three were hospitalized.

As a lifetime resident of New York City, one of the most racially (I use the term cautiously) diverse cities in the country, I find this article quite disturbing. It also punctuates a flailing rationale of desparation, from minutemen on the Arizona border, to the growth of suburban sprawl.

America stole SoCal from Mexico anyway. The fine tradition the supremacists would like to continue include torch carrying armed militias tracking 'freedom fighters' into canyons and murdering them.

As a spanish speaking human of anglo-saxon and african descent, I would love to see the anger felt by these youth directed in beneficial channels. Politics and diplomacy are no longer viewed as an option. Ignorance is prevailing. I applaud the writer of this article and the organizers of the diversity meetings. It's only through mutual understanding that we can progress -- and survive.

The Inland Empire has the highest rate of methamphetamine use in California, and teens use drugs at three times the national rate. The air is filthy and everyone commutes - almost nobody lives and works in the same city. The rule is that you live inland and work somewhere towards the coast - you can stand on any freeway overpass and see the surge west in the morning, and the surge east in the evening.

The problem is that these cities are barely communities... laid out in the S. Cal. style that makes automobile use the topmost priority by a long shot, filled with miles of strip malls and short on any community-forming characteristics.

Interesting article in The Nation on the inland empire here

"The Skinhead who wielded the ice pick, 19-year-old Armando Perez, appears Hispanic but insisted to police that he was white."

This is not uncommon, but very disturbing.

In the mid nineties, after German reunification, many hate-crimes had been committed. I was once witness to a group of neo-nazi affiliated hooligans chasing 3 African immigrants down the pedestrian mall, yelling the familiar sentiments.
What was even worse, one of the hooligans, and with that one of the most vocal (loudest yelling), was a fellow with dark skin and curly hair - everything BUT an arian (if you believe in the concept)!

This was a very interesting read. Something you will be hard pressed to find in mainstream media outlets. I thank the author for their efforts.

The comment mentioning the high level of methamphetamine abuse is also interesting. If you take a look at the effects of methamphetamine consumption, a rise in aggression should come as no surprise. The thing with humans is, they can't just hit someone, they need a reason, and with a deranged mind, it's not all that difficult to find truth in stupidity.

I work at a school in Lake Elsinore and I would like to share something that happened at the high school I worked at 3 years ago (I now work at a middle school).
I saw several hispanic kids ( not bi-racial) associating with the white-power group, so one day I stopped the main leader of the white-power group and asked him why they allowed the Mexican kids to hang out with them, and I got a reply that knocked my socks off. He said, "The Mexicans aren't as bad as the niggers, but they are stupid and we can get them to do our dirty work for us so we don't get in trouble."
I think these white-power groups are very sophisticated and are training and brainwashing young kids to their hate filled philosophy, and if something isn't done soon the violence will increase until we have some kind of racial war right here in our country.

Racism for profit and political gain.

As someone who lived in Orange County for twenty years, I can attest that the racial attitudes demonstrated in the Inland Empire are pervasive throughout Southern California, though it is considerably more circumspect in affluent cities along the coast.

The truth is, what youngsters boldly shout, their parents whisper as home. Racism and hatred is the glue that binds conservatives together. Republican leaders feed it for profit and political gain. It is also a contagious disease that spreads to African-Americans, Hispanics and Asians. How could it be otherwise?

Whatever a gang's membership, its reason for being is some kind of enemy. The dynamic described here is no different from what goes on in LA or in my nearby city on a daily basis. The question is if and why gang violence is tolerated.

If it's hispanics on hispanics, blacks on blacks, or whites on whites is it somehow different from 'hate' crimes? Not in my experience. A difference in vocabulary makes no difference in the consequences of the violence.

But it does sell more newspapers when it is packaged as an outrage. Creating the impression of good gang violence (that stays in its own neighborhood) is better than bad gang violence (trying to keep newcomers out of the neigborhood) dulls our sensitivity to the fact that the growth of gangs can be traced directly to the War on Drugs.

The Aryans are fighting, driving their own cars, and not working because they can earn money dealing. And they don't want anyone else taking over their turf.

Ending the stupid policy of prohibition will not end gang violence but it would reduce the problem substantially. Without a source of income, gangs cannot continue. However, law enforcement finds it easier to police illegal drugs than the alternative street crimes.

So we shall continue to have the "Ain't it terrible" stories like this one until gangs interfere with doing business. Like it or not, the difference between 'hate' crimes and business as usual is negligible.

I live in Diamond Bar...

...on the border of the Inland Empire, right next to Chino Hills where the main assault described happened. I hate it here. I moved here 10 months ago after graduating from San Diego State, and ended up in a suburban-sprawl hellhole where NOBODY communicates, racism runs rampant (on all sides), and people live in fear of non-existent crime. I've seen so much racist bullshit go down around here in this short time, but I just thank god I don't live in Riverside or Temecula (right near Lake Elsinore and Murietta). Those two cities are bursting at the seams with a pulsing, thriving white-supremacist movement. As a musician, I've met many bands from those cities, and have come to find that many of these bands, regardless of style of music, promote racist ideology. My band consists of a Mexican drummer, a chinese/white singer, an Irish guy, and myself, of European Jewish descent. We have been faced down by racists at concerts in the Inland Empire, and have seen beatings and fights regularly. Something needs to be done. I was raised in New Jersey and NYC, then lived in LA and San Diego, all very diverse regions. I have never even considered race AT ALL for any reason, so it's quite a culture shock to be thrown into an area like this where whites hate everyone, asians hate everyone, blacks try to stay under the radar, and the hispanic population are treated as third-class citizens.

Yet another reason for dispair

This article almost brought me to tears. The thought of someone minding their own business and then being attacked is very disturbing.
I just turned 40. When I was a kid it was ok to talk about people living in harmony with the earth; every living being deserving respect, etc. Somehow each Republican administration has chipped away at these ideas and no Democratic administration has been able to reverse the damage.

I have a few thought on this that are bound to be controversial, but I am curious if anyone out there agrees with me.
(1) Although this does not directly relate to the article, it does come in to play: quotas are a bad idea. If our capitalism worked the way it was supposed to, then everyone would have an equal shot of climbing the socio-economic ladder. Instead, integration moves at a pitifully slow rate and the neo-cons have quotas to blame for their problems. If our capitalism worked the way it was supposed to, but black were earning less; then the business who hired blacks would be at an advantage and eventually the racial wage disparities would erode. But having quotas has taken attention to the real debates that should be taking place about the high cost of higher education, etc.
(2) There are values that liberals (a group I include myslef in in spite of these comments) hold that are counter to racial equality. In particular, I mean the whole "be proud of your heritage" thing. Most thinking people are curious about their heritage. But it's nothing to be proud of. There is only one category of things you should be pruod of: Things you have done. or what you have accomplished given your circumstances.
For example:
I am a Jew by heritage. I'm glad that there is some history of debate and knowledge in my heritage. (talmud, etc). But every race and nation has this. If I were to say that I am proud of being a Jew, then I wouldn't be any difference then those a-holes who are proud of being white.
I once tutored a kid who was abad student and in part because of my tutoring he won a science fair and got into a special school for dislexics. I'm proud of that. (I'm not trying to brag, it was the best axample I could think of)
I am proud when I accompish something, not whose womb I came out of.

I am a white female and in the 12+ years I've live in D.C., I have witnessed severe growth of racism by blacks against whites. I often wonder why stories about racism are dominated by whites against blacks. I haven't been around the country much (accept for Florida and NYC.. which have awesome ethnic mixes) and have never seen white supremicists. Do they dominate the racism scene or is it politically incorrect to discuss other forms of it?

This problem actually began in 1998, as the prices of homes and housing in So.Ca. began to rise and the migration of poor and middle class families toward San Bernardino and Riverside began. What were they to do? They had no choice.
After 911, people began to fear that terrorists would make it through the pourous border and anyone with dark skin was subject to that fear. At that time, I was treating young hispanic teens who were victims of hate crimes in such unlikely places as LaJolla.
When people are constantly feeling like victims, not understanding economic issues enough to be able to vote for their own well-being, they get angry. When they are forced from their homes continually because of rising rents and utility bills, they become angry. When there are no recreation centers for their children to go to after school, they feel insignificant and angry. Until we begin to address the issue of taking care of our citizens, ALL of them, hate crime will continue. We are asking people to adopt a sophisticated understanding of community when they haven't enough education to understand that concept. When life becomes this difficult, people will psychologically begin to look for the "devil," the person who is responsible for making their lives so miserable. Hitler used this to control the German people and that is why he appeals to these young, hopeless, poorly educated and deprived young men.

Wish I'd posted on this soon after it was written. Read the article but then lost the link. Anyway, I live in the IE and have for some time. There's no doubt that even 20 years ago this place was so much more sparsely populated and of course much of this problem has been made by extensive construction and a poorly planned area. This place was ripe for development, and as housing prices in LA and OC have skyrocketed, people have been forced to move here. I came here as a kid, moved away after college and have been back the last few years for grad school and, well, here's an article about the massive increase in cost of houses in the IE; also, people in the IE are not living quite as stably-in terms of disposable income as their counterparts in LA/OC. The IE now has longer commutes on average than I believe any other region in the nation except Atlanta. Anyway, it was not this bad even 10, or certainly 20 years ago. Places where my bus route used to go would have only a couple of bus stops because there was such a large amount of open space. Now there are bus stops every few meters given the huge population increases. This is a case of growth spiralling out of control and unfortunately, all cities in the area see are increased sales taxes and city council members have very little motivation to think via a long view about the long term consequences. And because of the prominence of construction in this area, if a crash starts around here, there's really not gonna be much protection, as this article shows. The place is going to continue to grow at this relatively untrammeled pace for a while just because there is still plenty of open (if unattractive-it's very hot and dry out here)) land here. Long-time home owners, and lower middle-class property owners have to fight off eminent domain efforts as has happened in numerous places here. Myself, I really don't like the weather here and the fact that, well, there's no center here, no sense of community. It's just all growth all the time. I'd like to stay and try and make the area better but I'm tired of small-minded and short-sighted people who just won't listen. Things will get much worse here, and unfortunately, there'll be worse news here before there's much better news.
