Etan Thomas's Field Trip For Conservatives
Sign up to stay up to date on the latest headlines via email.
Giving all honor, thanks and praises to God for courage and wisdom, this is a very important rally. I'd like to thank you for allowing me to share my thoughts, feelings and concerns regarding a tremendous problem that we are currently facing. This problem is universal, transcending race, economic background, religion and culture, and this problem is none other than the current administration which has set up shop in the White House.
In fact, I'd like to take some of these cats on a field trip. I want to get big yellow buses with no air conditioner and no seatbelts and round up Bill O'Reilly, Pat Buchanan, Trent Lott, Sean Hannity, Dick Cheney, Jeb Bush, Bush Jr. and Bush Sr., John Ashcroft, Giuliani, Ed Gillespie, Katherine Harris, that little bow-tied Tucker Carlson and any other right-wing conservative Republicans I can think of, and take them all on a trip to the hood.
Not to do no 30-minute documentary. I mean, I want to drop them off and leave them there, let them become one with the other side of the tracks, get them four mouths to feed and no welfare, have scare tactics run through them like a laxative, criticizing them for needing assistance.
I'd show them working families that make too much to receive welfare but not enough to make ends meet. I'd employ them with jobs with little security, let them know how it feels to be an employee at will, able to be fired at the drop of a hat. I'd take away their opportunities, then try their children as adults, sending their 13-year-old babies to life in prison. I'd sell them dreams of hopelessness while spoon-feeding their young with a daily dose of inferior education. I'd tell them no child shall be left behind, then take more money out of their schools, tell them to show and prove themselves on standardized exams testing their knowledge on things that they haven't been taught, and then I'd call them inferior.
I'd soak into their interior notions of endless possibilities. I'd paint pictures of assisted productivity if they only agreed to be all they can be, dress them up with fatigues and boots with promises of pots of gold at the end of rainbows, free education to waste terrain on those who finish their bid. Then I'd close the lid on that barrel of fools gold by starting a war, sending their children into the midst of a hostile situation, and while they're worried about their babies being murdered and slain in foreign lands, I'd grace them with the pain of being sick and unable to get medicine.
Give them health benefits that barely cover the common cold. John Q. would become their reality as HMOs introduce them to the world of inferior care, filling their lungs with inadequate air, penny pinching at the expense of patients, doctors practicing medicine in an intricate web of rationing and regulations. Patients wander the maze of managed bureaucracy, costs rise and quality quickly deteriorates, but they say that managed care is cheaper. They'll say that free choice in medicine will defeat the overall productivity, and as co-payments are steadily rising, I'll make their grandparents have to choose between buying their medicine and paying their rent.
Then I'd feed them hypocritical lines of being pro-life as the only Christian way to be. Then very contradictingly, I'd fight for the spread of the death penalty, as if thou shall not kill applies to babies but not to criminals.
Then I'd introduce them to those sworn to protect and serve, creating a curb in their trust in the law. I'd show them the nightsticks and plungers, the pepper spray and stun guns, the mace and magnums that they'd soon become acquainted with, the shakedowns and illegal search and seizures, the planted evidence, being stopped for no reason.
Harassment ain't even the half of it. Forty-one shots to two raised hands, cell phones and wallets that are confused with illegal contrabands. I'd introduce them to pigs who love making their guns click like wine glasses. Everlasting targets surrounded by bullets, making them a walking bull's eye, a living piñata, held at the mercy of police brutality, and then we'll see if they finally weren't aware of the truth, if their eyes weren't finally open like a box of Pandora.
I'd show them how the other side of the tracks carries the weight of the world on our shoulders and how society seems to be holding us down with the force of a boulder. The bird of democracy flew the coop back in Florida.
See, for some, and justice comes in packs like wolves in sheep's clothing. T.K.O.d by the right hooks of life, many are left staggering under the weight of the day, leaning against the ropes of hope. When your dreams have fallen on barren ground, it becomes difficult to keep pushing yourself forward like a train, administering pain like a doctor with a needle, their sequels continue more lethal than injections.
They keep telling us all is equal. I'd tell them that instead of giving tax breaks to the rich, financing corporate mergers and leading us into unnecessary wars and under-table dealings with Enron and Halliburton, maybe they can work on making society more peaceful. Instead, they take more and more money out of inner city schools, give up on the idea of rehabilitation and build more prisons for poor people. With unemployment continuing to rise like a deficit, it's no wonder why so many think that crime pays.
Maybe this trip will make them see the error of their ways. Or maybe next time, we'll just all get out and vote. And as far as their stay in the White House, tell them that numbered are their days.

In short only a head-in-sand ostrich or the 3 monkeys, could deny the tragedy & travesty of the USA, its hypocricy, double speak & to put my own neck on the block, remember Malcolm's prediction & comment about "chickens coming home to roost" ... I only hope & pray that this brave young man escapes the martyrdom offered those who challenge the USA's racist-totalitarian regime & its greedy fearful masses who choose the "blue pill" offered by matrix.

I am proud of him. I hope he will continue to use his voice to help change things in the country.
Even though I was not born with a silver spoon in my mouth like the people he mentioned and I have had to work hard to get by, the 'hood would more than likely eat me alive. I would love to see the neocons dropped off in the hood with nothing more than the clothes on their backs.
Oh yeah, Mr. Thomas, that is an excellent speech. I hope to hear more in the future.

Why is a person brave for speaking the truth in a Democracy ? Is it because so many of you are afraid to speak the truth , that you hold someone with reverence and awe when they publicly stand and speak what is so ? Listen guys & gals. You only have what you are prepared to stand up for. Freedom isn't automatic, in a Capitalist culture. If you want it, you have to be willig to stand for something. Or, as they say, you will fall for anything.
As an aside, I think it's disgusting that voting isn't compulsory in your country, the way that it is here in Australia. It's your government managing your country. Get responsible !!!

I am afraid the subject of my posting may not be not directly related Mr. Thomas moving speech; I still posted it because I believe the right audience may be here to help me answer my question.
I am beeing deployed by the Red Cross to Baton Rouge on next Friday.
Please don't chastize me for my choice. I unfortunately educated my self about the Red Cross too late.
I am a middle-aged European transplant, have lived in California for 12 years. Politically, I stand to the left. I am an atheist.
I am lazy. I have endlessly complained about the Bush administration without doing anything significant to change things
I have become afraid of America. The rise of the rightwing and religious fundamentalism remind me of the rise of European fascism I was taught in school.
I have caught myself lumping all Americans in the same hypocritical, warmongering, self-righteous rightwing mold.
Believe me, it is easy to fall into this mindset when you live and work in Southern California.
I don't like this feeling, I don't want to hate. If I can, I want to help America return to be the progressive and modern beacon my parents told me about.
I decided to help because I came to the breaking point of watching a programmed catastrophe without doing anything against it.
In a few days, I'll be trying to help people who in majority will be black and poor (i use the term black because I believe the African-American term is a snide invention to keep people apart. I hope you can see that there is no malice in my heart).
I am white, middle-class without wealth besides education.
Although I have never felt their misery in my flesh and mind, I can understand the ressentment of the people in front of me.
What can I do to start mending this situation? I don't expect to change the world by myself, but I believe in a social "butterfly effect".
How can I explain my beliefs in my second language? I can be only myself.
How could my words and actions not to be confused with patronizing?
Please, I would like to hear from the non-white side.
I believe that keeping alive the racial tension and economic disparity is part of the conservative agenda to justify their excesses and take-over.
In all sincerity,
Alex

Native American, Mexican, Black, the kid down my street. I have had my share of event's that could have conspired to keep me down. Some were my own decisions, some because life is inherently unfair sometimes!
Etan's speech was surely well put together, but it's the same old bull***t race baiting us against them clichéd and ignorant ranting that you hear from every liberal pontificator in the world today.
Why doesn't he mention or take to task the black (liberal) leadership in this country? They certainly must have some responsibility?
Etan obviously made some decisions to improve his life. That is the opportunity that this country offers. That he encountered and other inner city people encounter those type of egregious situations I could not dispute. But there are no guarantees, never were. Once again life can be unfair! There are plenty of examples of those who have rose to the task and accomplished something out of nothing more than a dream and a unshakable desire.
All Etan is doing with these words are inflaming the ingrained hate that lies within the hearts of men. And it is the embracing of that hate that extinguishes the light of hope from the eyes of people just like you and me.
So Etan, it is neither truth, nor brave, and it is definitely not inspiring.
Heyrey

I think it's important to acknowledge that conservatives have played a dominant role in maintaining social, gender, and economic inequality in this country.
They didn't (entirely) invent it, of course, but the simple fact of the matter is that since the founding of this country well-off conservative white males have fought to keep a privileged position of power in our society, from protecting slavery, to opposing women's suffrage, opposing The Civil Rights Act, The Voting Rights Act, through today when, after the 1964-65 migration of conservatives to the Republican Party, we have a party that imposes top-down economics (redistribution of wealth upwards) and opposes any of the effective economic approaches used by FDR, and LBJ to boost people into the working classes. So, yes, conservative social and fiscal policies are to blame for the current inability to reduce poverty and inequality in this country.
What's frustrating is the great conservative American tradition of waving the flag and getting poor whites to vote against their economic interests, otherwise we likely would be able to tackle poverty and inequality head on.

Stay tuned for the next elections because if the GOP remains in control of both Houses of Congress, our elections are rigged and Clinton was our last freely elected President.

The Brutha ain't said nuthin we all didn't already know, and that just about any Black person would be able to tell you in their own way. I agree wholeheartedly with Etan, but there is nothing revolutionary in what he said, or how he said it. I applaud the Brutha for saying it, but he's not laying his life on the line. This ain't the Panthers.
