Michael Moore to the Disaster President

By Michael Moore, AlterNet. Posted September 2, 2005.

The controversial filmmaker pens an open letter to President Bush, criticizing him on his neglectful treatment of the Katrina tragedy.

Dear Mr. Bush:

Any idea where all our helicopters are? It's Day 5 of Hurricane Katrina, and thousands remain stranded in New Orleans and need to be airlifted.

Where on earth could you have misplaced all our military choppers? Do you need help finding them? I once lost my car in a Sears parking lot. Man, was that a drag.

Also, any idea where all our national guard soldiers are? We could really use them right now for the type of thing they signed up to do, like helping with national disasters. How come they weren't there to begin with?

Last Thursday I was in south Florida and sat outside while the eye of Hurricane Katrina passed over my head. It was only a Category 1 then, but it was pretty nasty. Eleven people died and, as of today, there were still homes without power. That night the weatherman said this storm was on its way to New Orleans. That was Thursday! Did anybody tell you? I know you didn't want to interrupt your vacation and I know how you don't like to get bad news. Plus, you had fundraisers to go to and mothers of dead soldiers to ignore and smear. You sure showed her!

I especially like how, the day after the hurricane, instead of flying to Louisiana, you flew to San Diego to party with your business peeps. Don't let people criticize you for this -- after all, the hurricane was over and what the heck could you do, put your finger in the dike?

And don't listen to those who, in the coming days, will reveal how you specifically reduced the Army Corps of Engineers' budget for New Orleans this summer for the third year in a row. You just tell them that even if you hadn't cut the money to fix those levees, there weren't going to be any Army engineers to fix them anyway because you had a much more important construction job for them -- BUILDING DEMOCRACY IN IRAQ!

On Day 3, when you finally left your vacation home, I have to say I was moved by how you had your Air Force One pilot descend from the clouds as you flew over New Orleans so you could catch a quick look of the disaster. Hey, I know you couldn't stop and grab a bullhorn and stand on some rubble and act like a commander in chief. Been there, done that.

There will be those who will try to politicize this tragedy and try to use it against you. Just have your people keep pointing that out. Respond to nothing. Even those pesky scientists who predicted this would happen because the water in the Gulf of Mexico is getting hotter and hotter making a storm like this inevitable. Ignore them and all their global warming Chicken Littles. There is nothing unusual about a hurricane that was so wide it would be like having one F-4 tornado that stretched from New York to Cleveland.

No, Mr. Bush, you just stay the course. It's not your fault that 30 percent of New Orleans lives in poverty or that tens of thousands had no transportation to get out of town. C'mon, they're black! I mean, it's not like this happened to Kennebunkport. Can you imagine leaving white people on their roofs for five days? Don't make me laugh! Race has nothing -- NOTHING -- to do with this!

You hang in there, Mr. Bush. Just try to find a few of our Army helicopters and send them there. Pretend the people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast are near Tikrit.

Yours,

Michael Moore

P.S. That annoying mother, Cindy Sheehan, is no longer at your ranch. She and dozens of other relatives of the Iraqi War dead are now driving across the country, stopping in many cities along the way. Maybe you can catch up with them before they get to DC on September 21st.

Digg!

Michael Moore is an Academy award-winning filmmaker and author of "Dude, Where's My Country".

No Lobby Money for Natural Disaster Preperation and Prevention
Posted by: barrys new conversations on Sep 2, 2005 1:30 PM

"Not my job", Bush should reply to his critics. There is no lobby money or votes for natural disaster mitigation. Hey, tell him and Cheney how you can outsource the chore and then you would get action. Why they would even seed the clouds to make sure!
Lets face it . To become president someone owns you. Bush is a moron, but the Evangelicals, Zionists and the military-industrial complex own him. Just like the ATLA, the NEA and all the hyphenated-Americans owned the sociopath Bill Clinton.
More states rights would be a better bet than allowing people like Bush and Clinton to have so much power.

This will turn out to be just one of the many scandals that will bring down this despicable administration. When all is said and done, it'll make Watergate look like a traffic infration. Thank God for the Michael Moores and the Cindy Sheehans and the Molly Ivinses and, for that matter, the good people (most of them anyway) who contribute to this site. We're the ones who are tuning up the heat. We're the ones who will eventually bring these bastards down. We're the ones who are taking America back from the forces of darkness and stupidity. We're denounced by the right wing as "traitors" but we are the ones who are trying to save this country. We are the better angels of America's nature.
Peace.

...if the 'big one' were to hit California right now, or another major hurricane hit some other part of the coast, or any other major natural disaster for that matter. This country would fall apart at the seams. You can't cut taxes for the rich, unilaterally execute policies that involve more than one party, subsidize big business, spend billions in foreign aid, gut domestic agencies tasked for preparedness, indefinitely ignore science and the experts of their warnings, take a gamble and occupy a country in hopes of big returns to the tune of billions per week, blame state and local authorities for shortfalls, ignore dilapidating infrastructure, and not expect it to bit you in the ass someday. When New Orleans is under control…it is time to start the impeachment process. I think enough people are starting to realize that a mistake was made in November of 2004.

FEMA Brown was just following orders...

Re: the criminally delayed federal response to Katrina.
Is it plausible that an adequate response plan existed, but was delayed as long as politically possible in order to allow:

g) further adverse effect to an already totaled city/refinery complex so that there might be more for Halliburton to rebuild and expand (yes, the administration will INSIST on expanding the refinery infrastructure concomitant with increased pressure to drill ANWAR); or,

w) DHS to stress the limits of impacted social order so as to better test their emergency response model on a few poor people; it was really an optimal moment to model the effects of a large-scale disaster on social order/population containment/urban infrastructure, all the better to plan an effective martial law/disaster response program; or,

b) both?

It's not a good day without a good conspiracy theory.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THIS DOES:
Just imagine this: what if terrorists decide to take this opportunity to attack the US somewhere else. Most National Guard people are deployed to IRAQ where they don't need to be now, and New Orleans where they do need to be. Will George make decisions that will defend us? I think not.

This government has turned against the people. Our fathers warned about this and now it's here. This disaster in New Orleans is a direct result of the corruption in the Bush regime. What's true is that if New Orleans were inhabited by the wealthy Bush's base and friends they would have had a levy system that was state of the art. So much for America and democracy.

Democracy and the flag are used as tools for the conservatives to further their dominance agenda. The America they care about is the rich corporate mega wealthy America. The rest are cattle to be used like animals to make more profit. This is how they see the world. It is in everything they do. It's just to horrible to believe that's all.

It's time for a revolution in this country. It's time for the people to rise up against Bush and all the corporate government officials who support this attack on our democracy.

It is a sad fact but many of those who survived katrina's aftermath had a chance at a better life had they been rescued on time.

The president did not consider their well being BEFORE Katrina. How do you expect he would do it now?

For him, as his first words out of his mouth in his interview were "Zero Tolerrance for looters" proved;

keeping the merchendises in the half-destroyed shops in N.O. is more important than taking the poor and disabled out of N.O.

You think the death of a few thousand poor and operessed would make his corporate supporters/directors allow him to act as a human?

To anyone with any clout, there are over 200 Army and Air Force helicopters sitting on the ramps at Ft. Rucker. I know because I work here. I also know we're on a nice 4 day weekend for Labor Day. I'm absolutely disgusted by the whole thing. I've been trying to call FEMA, Red Cross, police agencies since Monday afternoon. I was told the aircraft might go if asked. Well, obviously the many stranded people of the Gulf Coast don't count when it comes to asking. Maybe the news, the Mayors, The Governors, the House and Senate, the president might want to ask.

Somebody, ask!

PAY ATTENTION: Impeachment won't work while the republicans control the house. I hear calls for impeachment every day, everywhere I go in Seattle, and all throughout the Northwest. It's my dream to see him gone ASAP, but here is the realistic strategy.
GET THE SENATE VOTE OUT IN '06. It is imperative. People need to take this next coming election period as seriously as we take our presidential elections, or more. If we can take control of those in Senate and Congress, then Bush can't push his agenda through anymore, and yes, we could then impeach him. Hold him/rumsfeld/rove/cheney accountable for war crimes, CIA leaks etc. He spent his all his political capital in the last few weeks. Tides are turning in America.

WE pay for it. There are several kitchens. Regular citizens are opening their hearts and homes and pocketbooks. Why don't you, George? Because you are one dastardly MF, that is why. I find it extremely insulting to every single American out there that there has been such a delay in sending help. I believe the people in Washington may have been too busy finding ways to exploit this opportunity and find a way to make money from it. How on earth??????......do gas and oil prices go up .30 - .60 cents overnight???? I thought that gas station owners were not suppose to increase their prices with the new gas prices until they received a fill up at the new cost??? Funny it seems as though everyone went up on there prices at the same time....could everyone have gotten a delivery at the same time???? Funny I haven't even seen tanker trucks carrying gas all over which would have to be the case in order to supply gas stations with the newly priced gas! The state our country is in is very frightening. and to think this man was actually voted in as President!!! for 2 terms no less. I don't know a single person who voted for him! where are all those people now...should'nt they be out there defending him and making excuses for him?? oh wait first things first....hi ho, hi ho, its off to the bank they go! This is how they add insult to injury!!

This is what the Republicans have been talking about when they say they want smaller government. The "Great Society" has been dismantled and all those safety nets, like FEMA, are gone. If the state and local government doesn't (or can't) pick up the slack, then, too bad. The plans and money for the project to keep the levees intact was enacted 40 years ago and still only 80% complete as of this year (because our elected officials kept taking the money for something else). We all share the responsibility of allowing our government to stop taking care of our poorest and least able. We also have to stop living for today; the infrastructure, whether it is levees, the environment or the national debt, has to be carefully managed for our children and grandchildren.

The time is indeed NOW....we HAVE to rid ourselves of the infestation in the White House and george's entire inept administration. This so called "elected president" is way beyond stupid or ignorant.
