Electro-hate

By Tom Kim, Intelligence Report. Posted August 18, 2005.

Stormfront was the first hate site on the Web -- and ten years later, its membership has hit over 52,000, with no signs of stopping.

On most days, the man once labeled a "near genius" in a Time magazine article spends the bulk of his time in an office of the Mandeville, La., home of infamous white supremacist David Duke.

There, Jamie Kelso whips across Duke's hardwood floors on a wheeled office chair as he attends to his work: monitoring the burgeoning community of the racist Stormfront Web site on one of six different computers.

To the thousands of white supremacists who regularly visit Stormfront and its forum, Kelso is best known by his e-moniker, "Charles A Lindbergh." He signs off all his posts with a quote from Lindbergh, a well-known racist and anti-Semite: "We can have peace and security only as long as we band together to preserve that most priceless possession, our inheritance of European blood."

"I admire the aviator so much," Kelso says.

The aviator, were he still alive, might well admire Kelso. As Stormfront celebrates its 10th birthday -- the first major hate site on the Internet, it was created by former Alabama Klan leader Don Black in 1995 -- Kelso has much to be proud of. In the three years he's been a senior moderator of the site, it has grown from fewer than 10,000 registered users to, as of mid-June, an astounding 52,566. And while many thousands of that ever-growing total probably haven't visited in years, independent Web monitors recently ranked Stormfront the 338th largest electronic forum on the Internet, putting it easily into the top 1 percent of all sites on the World Wide Web.

Black and Kelso have created something more than just another hate site that draws people for a few months, then fades for lack of interest. Using everything from good manners to "white scholarships" to such catchy gimmicks as highlighting its members' birthdays, these two men have built something that very few people on the entire Internet have -- a genuine and very large cyber-community. That they did it at a time when major neo-Nazi groups are on the decline is merely icing.

"Without a doubt," Bob DeMarais, a former staff member of the neo-Nazi National Alliance, wrote recently, "Stormfront is the most powerful active influence in the White Nationalist movement."

Want to find the latest headlines on black-on-white crime? Go to Stormfront. New developments in the National Alliance's leadership woes? Go to Stormfront. Details of yet another nefarious Jewish conspiracy? Go to Stormfront.

Stormfront's recent growth spurt is only the beginning, Kelso says. He and Black share a larger goal, one that their friend Duke also tried with a fair measure of success -- establishing real legitimacy in the realm of public opinion.

Fade to Black

It began with Don Black.

Going back to high school, Black had always been one of the more enthusiastic proponents of white power. One of his first forays into the organized movement was in the 1970s, when he volunteered for the late white supremacist J.B. Stoner's unsuccessful run for governor of Georgia.

That was until Stoner's campaign manager, Jerry Ray, the brother of Martin Luther King Jr. assassin James Earl Ray, shot him in the chest. The shooting apparently stemmed from accusations that Black had broken into Stoner's office to steal a mailing list for the National Socialist White People's Party.

After recovering, Black went on to join the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, the group headed by Duke in the 1970s. Working on Duke's unsuccessful campaign for Louisiana state senate, Black won Duke's trust, moving up to become his mentor's right-hand man. When Duke left the group amid allegations that he'd tried to sell its membership list to another Klan group for $35,000, Black took over.

But Black quickly got into trouble himself. In 1981, he and nine other white supremacists were arrested as they prepared to board a yacht with which they intended to invade the tiny Caribbean island of Dominica, oust its black-run government, and transform it into a "white state."

Black's resulting three-year prison sentence was time well spent. He took classes in computer programming that would provide the basis for his future.

Not long after his release, Black launched an abysmally unsuccessful campaign for a U.S. Senate seat from Alabama. He wound up marrying Duke's ex-wife, Chloe, and moving to West Palm Beach, Fla. Once there, he began dabbling with his computer, eventually setting up a dial-up bulletin board service for the radical right. By March 1995, that service evolved into Stormfront, the Net's best-known hate site.

Black saw clearly that with this new technology, white supremacists might finally bypass the mainstream media and political apparatus, getting their message out to people who otherwise would never hear it -- people who now could listen in the privacy of their own homes without fear of embarrassment or reproach. "The potential of the Net for organizations and movements such as ours is enormous," Black told the Philadelphia Inquirer in 1996. "We're reaching tens of thousands of people who never before had access to our point of view."

Being the first of its kind helped Stormfront win enormous publicity. Black and his site were written up in newspapers around the country and the world, and he frequently appeared on major network news shows like ABC's Nightline, where, clad in suit and tie, he talked politely about allowing people access to information not filtered by the "media monopoly." Though he undoubtedly turned off many viewers, each major TV appearance led to a spike in visitors to Stormfront.

So, what are the requirements for membership?

None? Oh. How is it different then from, say, the old Gong Show? I never watched, but as I recall, it lasted quite a while and drew a respectably large audience. Usually any stunt will get some attention.

I found the self-description of the founders, as needing the reassurance of others that they weren't just kooks, an interesting comment. But even if they were to have half a million members, I don't understand how that would offer any comfort. Even if they had ten million members or twenty million, anyone in this day and age who thinks 'race' or 'blood' means anything other than some kind of mostly superficial description is a kook.

Last time I heard, the Flat Earth Society had more members. And ugly dog contests are more popular. Don't you think we will always have funny people around who don't know enough to laugh at themselves? Seems to me it's always been that way.

Hating Hate

There have been some who have accused AlterNet of being a hate sight. This may be technically true. We hate what's happening to this country and our culture. Hate rules and that's too bad. All you need is love.

Racism?

A question for you all to ponder as I have:

If, as it looks like it might be, racial bias is an innate trait of our genetic makeup (linked text), can it realistically be declared evil?

I've linked this little note to a short editorial piece in the New Scientist that highlights this very thing. Unfortunately, the end of the piece can only be read if you have a subscription so to paraphrase it basically implies that, if this innate racism actually is the case (and I must stress it's still certainly not proven), it is only society that can counter act these effects. People in, or who have previously been in, mixed race relationships were 'less' racially bias than the next person, for example.

That would imply, though, that every racist person is ultimately the fault of anyone who isn't racist. Why? Because if everyone is predisposed to display racial bias it can only be those who don't allow themselves to succumb to it's tendencies that can 'show them the light'. In the same way everyone 'grows' speech but has to be taught how to read, everyone 'grows' racial bias but has to be taught recognise and avoid this bias. Their ignorance (for that is all it is) is our failure.

No, you disagree? Oh, I don't know either. However, I do know that it will never be as simple as pointing the finger and stating the person at the end of it is the bad guy.

NB The reason I refer to racial bias rather than racism is that the vast majority of racism comes not from putting down one race but by favouring your own (starting with the obvious, like family, and working up). It is, supposedly, this bias that leads to the more familiar patterns of racism.

There is hope...the kingdom of heaven where hate and discrimination will go away. Till then, we have to continually educate and deal with people that are ignorant to the beauty of our multi-cultural nation!

One post taking a scientific point of view about racism and suggesting what might be done about it and another springing right up from the racist hell-fire center.

Can't wait to see what the rest of the responses will be like.

The white racists in the U.S. must feel strange watching folks like Colin Powell, Condi Rice and Supreme Court Justice Thomas sashaying around with conservative and right wingnuts, including folks like Wolfowitz and Perle (who are rightwing nuts of the Jewish ethno-religious group) part of the leadership the very organization (rpublican party and its rightwing christian allies) that gave hate groups more room to play in...even assume a degree of respectability.

Is it a hate site or a support group...?

It takes people "off the streets" and into a community, as the article says, and it also gives them a community structure that is interactive and even self-policing. The user posts that I have read seem to emphasize strongly that people are responsible for their own acts and for bettering or ruining their own lives--and that's a good attitude for any demographic to have. It provides a place that reinforces strong personal values and a common identity that one is encouraged to feel proud of instead of apologizing for because it's not a sanctioned minority--that's a few steps up from a street gang, and just a bit lower than a "valid" social structure--i.e., only in that it vilifies others to justify itself by contrast.

Not that I have any reason to support any place that generalizes against different colours, ethnicities, sexualities, religions, but it's important that people have a place where they can express themselves honestly and not automatically have it rammed down their throats as "wrong." The emotional steam and serious thought that's let off in a place like this means less trouble in daily life, less overt and crass bigotry, less frustration overall. And actual "hate speech"--incitement to violence and jihad such as is now forcing the deportment of extremist imams from the UK--is actually something discouraged on this site, as they're advocating a prudent policy, it seems, of surface civility and good PR. Which isn't bad for dealing with real people out in the real world either.

The thing to be concerned about in Stormfront is its boost to voting, not to violence. Being polite and "reasonable", it's more likely to form tight and logical mental constructs than loose and unstable ones, and to foster individual attitudes than group ones. The violent kneejerk racists are likely to get booted off, and to seek clubs where they feel more welcome to express themselves.

The way to combat its harms is by intelligence and reasonableness, by evidence and debunking of myths--by the same kind of openness that one is likely to find on the message boards. It's a haven for the "questioning" White person, and so any answers one gives will have to be just as convincing--and provide a sense of belonging somewhere where one's speech is actually free.

In America we can have hate sites because everyone is Constitutionally support in their opinion.
Even those that want to take away rights of others, take away the prosperity of others, including those that visit that website.
Wouldn't have it any other way even though I fully believe those people to be disturbed in their thought and belief. I hope that someday they learn that the qualities they disparage and honor are in each and every race, regardless of faith or sexual orientation.

I feel like I should go on there and start debating and debunking. This is easier said than done though. Some of these people are living in their own delusional world where "real science" and "real history" supports their view of things. There are people who claim the holocaust never happened, or that it was a story vastly exaggerated to give jews power (see www.ihr.org, the "institute for historical revision" for an example of this). Just like "UFOlogy," none of it rests on solid evidence, but there are nevertheless whole books written on the subject, which draw the unskeptical reader into believing that for some reason (political, economic, conspiratorial...etc) mainstream science has it wrong and this author has it right. According to many people, the holocaust never happened or was "not all that bad," and any evidence you bring up to the contrary is just the "politically correct story cooked up by mainstream historians being paid by jews" or something. It's extremely hard to reason with someone who is entrenched in this hate stuff, but I refuse to give up.

You've got to be taught
To hate and fear,
You've got to be taught
From year to year,
It's got to be drummed
In your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade,
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught before it's too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You've got to be carefully taught!

Children of the Gods

The genome project found in 2001 that we have 223 non-human genes in our genetic sequence, that were inserted there about 200,000 years ago. This genetic inheritance from our creators, some call them ET while others call them the Gods, is spread evenly across the planet and shared amongst all the varied groups of humans.

Environment is a key determinant in why human behavior is so varied. Harsh extremes of climate call for adaptation to the harshness in differing ways. The desert favors both predator, the Mideast, and cooperator, the Australian Aborigines. The reason the groups behave so differently is because the mideast is a transit point for many roaming bands of humans, whereas the Aborigines did not have any other competitors in the eco-sphere.

The Eskimo inhabits a land that limits population through the harshness of climate, the other extreme, cold. With the extreme cold, nature kept only small populations with no other human competitors in the harshness of the extreme northern climate. The Eskimo has never known human warfare, for the food abundance has always exceeded necessary requirements.

When the Portugese, the first Europeans in Africa, met the Africans they dubbed them the "People from the land of the Good people." The area was in modern day Mozambique and a person could travel from one end of the country to the other without being waylaid. The environment was plentiful with no competitors in the area, large food abundance. This allowed the tribes to develop a high level of cooperator behavior, what we could refer to as civilized behavior.

Europe, on the other hand was trapped in predator behavior because of the tribal behavior that was favored by the environment, and housed many tribal cannibal groups, that exist until this day.

This would all be incidental except for the invention of nuclear weapons that may once and all finish us all off.

52,000 members of a seperatist group is a small number among 6 billion of us, and once they know the truth, for sure they will want to be as one with all of "Gods Children."

Just a few gems plucked from the scintillatingly intellectual thread entitled "Reproductive Strategies", in which these scholars discussed correlations b/w brain, genital size, and intelligence. If this is serious thought, some one please shoot me now and put me out of my misery!

It shows some real class to post an article like this. I like all the diversity. I hate censorship. You even included a link that I can not and will not go to. Although it might be interesting to register with a name like Rosa Parks from Selma (lol) or I could be more subtle and be Crispus Attucks or use the name of a Tuskegee Airman.

I did find the mention of scholarship interesting. I wonder if they would give me a scholarship. I am the right color, but I guess they would not approve of me listening to Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters, or Stanley Jordan on my way to school though. They probably would not approve of me quoting Martin Luther King Jr. when I had to write papers nor would they probably like the fact the politician I respect most at this time is John Conyers. I guess I would have to act like Winston Smith in 1984 (yes, somebody recommended it recently and I just read it) and hide any dissent I might have towards them.

Don't worry folks I don't think these bozos will get anywhere. Look at all the pot smokers in this country, they have not gotten much of anywhere gaining their freedom. And these guys are probably no where near as dangerous as the likes of O'Rielly and Limbaugh that Mr. Solomon was quoting in his article.

I'm surprised at the lukewarm reactions of liberals on this site to a "hate group" that is gaining mainsteam support. 52,000 members for a group like this isn't small and the comment that 100 million members wouldn't mean much is plain stupid. But it's this sort of rightousness that's gutting liberal relevance in America. Some might want to belittle the signifigance of these groups by calling them kooks but that doesn't make them go away. They are living breathing people who think, get together, form communities and work at self preservation. They vote, hire employees, rent homes, give loans at banks, go to church and so much more. By pretending they only exist as a small lunatic fraction of our society allows them to grow in isolation. The same thing happened with the neo-cons and the christian right, no one gave them much thought until their numbers reached a critical mass. Liberals are still not taking them seriously even though their doctrines are becoming the norm. And don't think that the neo-cons and these groups don't share many of the same members. Anyone who knows anything about human nature knows people often say one thing and do another.

As the article also stated this Storm front site has articles about hate crimes against whites and stories about Jewish conspiracies. They get away with this in part because liberal groups are not confronting their own prejudices, the prejudices of minorities and Isreals role in the middle east. Liberal sites are constantly stereotyping conservatives. Minorities get away with racism and claim racial pride. Those critical of Zionists or their ilk are instantly labeled anti-semetic. By not confronting these sorts of glaring hypocricies the "hate groups" get to claim these beliefs and actions are normal. It legitimizes prejudices and racism with the "everyone does it" excuse.

Boxers study video tapes of thier opponents. Generals study manuevers of the enemy. They take their adversaries seriously. Liberals need to start doing the same research and planning. To call your competitor a kook, rally the troops and preach to the choir is worthless if you don't know what your up against and if your not honest about your weaknesses. If you don't know how to fight you're going to get your butt kicked.

Keep your friends close and keep your enemies even closer.

Let them have their fun. Hell, It's a free country! Ignore the pricks they'll go away. As long as you give them ink, they'll spout their crap to anyone that will listen. Everyone is free to say anything they want in this country. I'm just as free to ignore it!
