Family Planners Stand Up To Right-Wing Boycott

By Cynthia L. Cooper, Women's eNews. Posted July 18, 2005.

A well-funded conservative Christian boycott of Planned Parenthood has expanded beyond abortion clinics, but the organization and its supporters are fighting back.

When Planned Parenthood of Waco-Central Texas held its 16th annual "Nobody's Fool" earlier this week, John Pisciotta was there.

In a press conference Pisciotta told reporters that the voluntary sex-education program open to area youth and endorsed by dozens of local businesses and churches was immoral, because it teaches about contraception, sexual issues and sexually transmitted diseases instead of abstinence-only lessons.

"The theme is to expose Planned Parenthood for their agenda of 'anything goes' sexuality, which is quite well-revealed on their Teen Wire Web site," said Pisciotta, co-director of Pro-Life Waco.

Waco's Pisciotta -- who last year instigated a boycott of Girl Scout cookies to force the girls' organization to drop its endorsement of the Planned Parenthood teen-education program -- is part of a concerted push to derail Planned Parenthood, a federation of 122 local and state affiliates that operate over 800 clinics nationwide, providing contraception, gynecological care, and, at some locations, abortion services.

Dating to the 1980s -- when it began with anti-abortion protests at women's health care clinics -- the campaign against Planned Parenthood is now waged on many other fronts as well: legislative attacks on government funding, organized boycotts of sponsors, challenges to corporate supporters and vocal opposition to sex-education programs. While dozens of groups spread and magnify opposition to the 84-year-old Planned Parenthood, two national organizations -- Life Decisions International, and STOPP International -- provide full-time leadership.

Boycott List of Corporate Donors

With an annual budget of approximately $110,000, Douglas R. Scott, Life Decisions' president, and his staff of three, research and publish "The Boycott List" of companies -- usually about 50 or 60 in number -- that donate to Planned Parenthood. Approximately 10,000 copies of the $15.75 list are distributed twice a year, including to 33 anti-abortion organizations that endorse it, ranging from Human Life International to Concerned Women for America, Christian Coalition, Family Research Council, American Family Association and Traditional Values Coalition.

"We're educating people about what companies give to Planned Parenthood so that people who are on our side may choose not to support those companies," said Scott in an interview.

According to a March press release, current boycott targets include Adobe Systems, Bank of America, Johnson and Johnson, Kenneth Cole, Levi Strauss, Nationwide Insurance, Prudential, Unilever, Wachovia, Whole Foods and Walt Disney. Walt Disney is listed because its theme park gave a donation to Planned Parenthood of Greater Orlando to prevent teen pregnancy, according to a Life Decisions newsletter.

Life Decisions -- which Scott describes as being based in northern Virginia -- also introduces resolutions at annual meetings of corporate shareholders designed to end corporate donations to Planned Parenthood. Thomas Strohbar, Life Decisions board chair and the head of Pro Vita Advisors, an anti-choice investment firm in Dayton, Ohio, spearheads this effort, which he claims is going well.

"Quite a few are no longer giving," said Strohbar, citing an American Express decision to stop giving donations to Planned Parenthood, which he said followed closely on the heels of his shareowner proposal in 1999. In a January 2004 press release, Life Decisions claimed similar victories at A.T. and T., General Mills and Target.

The release made special mention of the 2003 decision by Berkshire Hathaway, the investment firm in Omaha made famous by founder Warren Buffet, to end corporate donations to the Buffet Foundation, a generous funder to pro-choice organizations. Scott claims that 116 companies have withdrawn Planned Parenthood support, pulling $35 million in funds away from the organization.

One man's boycott is another's invitation to support.

I recall about 10 years ago, the Disney boycott began because of the suggestive content of some of its films. I read somewhere recently that those advocating the boycott announced that it was over, because they had won -- when in fact the boycott's influence was neglible.

I expect the same with the Planned Parenhood boycott. The boycotters are less interested in effectiveness and more interested in rallying and organizing those already sympathetic. After all, idle hands are the devil's playthings.

Boycotts are legal. I soon expect to hear that I should boycott in return those corporations that caved. And I will.

Now that is low. They boycotted Girl Scout cookies. They are trying to put all those little girls and their chocolate mints out of business.

Has anyone ever counted these people. How many join in boycotts such as this or the ones against Microsoft and Disney. I'm glad that corporate sponsors are finally starting to stand up for themselves instead of running scared as soon as they hear the word, boycott.

Great to know what the latest tactics to bring Planned Parenthood down are exactly. I agree corporate sponsors shouldn't back down.

Planned Parenthood is being attacked in my city because they want to build a new facility. We're doing what we can but don't know if it will be enough. They say that building too close to a local school would encourage sexual activity in teenagers (are they dragging kids in off the streets?) or even worse put the kids in danger because of bombers. Don't they realize they are condoning Eric Rudolph and the other murderers in the name of a God I, as a person of faith, certainly don't recognize?

The US list is $15.95. If I happened to have it, I'd order it and print it out right here. Unfortunately, I work in Social Services and I'm broke.

The real agenda isn't abortion. Its the christian talibans effort to oppress and subjugate women. What is next? Veils and FGM?

I'm a Canadian, and for that I count myself lucky, but the same happens in Canada (with a little help from Americans cometimes. There was a phonecall campaign by Americans - present company excluded - to tell our MPs that they would go to hell for passing gay marriage. It happened anyway.)
I grew up in British Columbia, and I got a taste of frank, and awesome, sex education until grade seven - they told us all we needed to know about sex and how to prevent pregnancy, and also that abstinence is okay.
Then I moved to Saskatchewan, in central Canada. We have a program called "Teen-Aid". They're semi famous for their paws off shorts, gym shorts with paws on the bum and the paws crossed out. They're an abstinence only program, and I think you only hear the word "condom" once, and it's used in the same sentence as "does not prevent pregnancy". My stepsister had a baby at 17, didn't think she could get pregnant her first time. I know other people who think that since condoms seem so useless anyways... why use them at all?
I want to teach Sex Ed now. I don't want to see my classmates happen all over again. It's the time for knowledge. We have the Internet and communications and media... and they are all cheaper than ever. Isn't it time we used these for real information, not condemning those who want to protect teenagers from having a baby?
My nephew is being raised by grandma and grandpa. My dad loves having a baby around, but probably wishes his first grandson were born to a daughter who could take care of him.

I can't wait to get ahold of a copy of that 'boycott' list and start sending my own letters congratulating those companies for supporting such a wonderful cause. I would love to just gripe and moan about this whole deal, but us progressives are kinda digging our own grave by not being just as active as the other guys. Why don't people find out where the protests are going to be and go there to show support? Even if its a Saturday and you want to go see the newest artsy flick? It takes so much time to do what they do, because they really believe in their cause. Well, I DO TOO! And I'll be damned if I am not going to start showing it. (I'm from Texas, and had I known that this was going down so publically so near to me, I would have gone to show my support. Well, no more 'I would have's'!!!)

One of the entities on the boycott list is the Fox Family Channel. Isn't that just a little bit ironic?

We have members of a "right wing" these days who claim moral superiority who show no evidence of any morality beyond a few silly platitudes. It's really nice to see that some of those who've put a little thought into their lives fighting back.

There've been loons for decades claiming that there is no population problem, that the only ones who talk about contraception or--God forbid--ABORTION are Satanist hippies. Those who argue that didn't live in one of the most crowded square miles on earth like I did; they don't recognize that Mother Teresa was a product of two authoritarian cultures (one of which, Albania, those right wingers hate!): Eastern Europe and the Eastern European church.

Thanks to Planned Parenthood. May we all learn a little from them on how to fight back!

I support Planned Parenthood. Lets boycott corp.'s who hold out funding for vital services,Pap tests, treatment for STDs,& contraceptive Ed& services. I'm from a family of 10 kids;my parents were dirt poor. My mom asked her dr for The Pill, after she'd had 7 kids-but bible-banger, self-righteous Catholic "healer" refused. Born in '63, I'm 8th. Imagine how thrilled my mom was, having more kids, because a dr refused her appropriate &necessary request.

In 1999,I chose dr from my insurance directory,&made an apptmnt. When I got there, receptionist said, "Dr. Kirsten Crowe does NOT prescribe birth control pills." Weird, huh?hadn't even asked. Too bad idiots didn't tell me when I made apptmt, or I'd pick another dr! Couldn't believe it-36 yrs later,my mom's worthless dr(now dead)was reincarnated, lady dr, clueless, (who herself later told me she was a virgin!) Furious, I went into dr's office, asked "Why don't you prescribe birth control pills? Aren't you a medical dr, sworn to do no harm? What scientific reason can you possibly have?" She replied--and I'm serious--"Because I think it might harm a fetus." That was a 'Holy crap, Batman' moment for me. I then asked, "didn't you take Biochemistry in college?"(science explains her statement's stupidity-taking The Pill effectively means no pregnancy:no implantation, thus no blastula/morula/embryo, long before there's ever a notion of fetus!) Well! The good dr replied, "Oh, I took the Easy Biochemistry, because it was JUST TOO HARD." &YET YOU THINK YOU ARE QUALIFIED TO BE MY DOCTOR?! As soon as insur. allowed, I switched drs. & Complained re:"notification after the fact, that the dr I chose from insurance directory, is a FREAK!"

So,I donated $150 to my Planned Parenthood chapter, in honor of EX-dr.& her bible-banger ignorance, telling my story. Since then, she's married,& has a child--her name:Dr. Kirsten(Crowe) Certalic, D.O. That's "doh!"

As a college student, I went to Planned parenthood for Pap tests. It was cheapest,affordable,w/income-based charges,& my Jesuit-run school, Marquette Univ, did NOT provide any female reproductive care or routine screening.

As a 41 yr old married woman, I'm appalled at obsessions of these Christian Conservatives. Hey, if you don't like abortion, don't have 1. Want YOUR kids to be clueless about sex so they get HIV/STDs/or become pregnant teens, then don't send them to school during Sex-Ed class. But don't handicap others' kids 'cause of your religious perversion&non-scientific voodoo.

Now legislators want to make it legal &OK for PHARMACISTS(not an M.D., not D.O., not D.D.S., not D.C., not D.V.M., not R.N., not even L.P.N.--really, they're extra-educated CHEMISTS!) to veto a medical Rx of a Dr, for contraceptives/other meds that THE PHARMACIST finds morally objectionable. I find That morally & scientifically, ethically, objectionable! Who do they think they are? Why choose a profession you object to? Do Planned Parenthoods have a pharmacy in them? Because if they do, I think everyone should get Rxs there. &, I think these SupraMoral pharmacists should GROW UP& DO THEIR JOBS,& complain about their job when they get home, like the rest of us do.

I'm trying to imagine the mentality that spends 15.95 US (see: calamitysam's LIST COST posting in the middle of this page) for list of names of boycott-proof corporations that have supported Planned Parenthood.

More to the point ... I'm trying to imagine the mind that not only came up with this money maker ... I wish I knew how to market a product so successfully that publication committed to the exact opposite of the thing I'm selling will nonetheless help promote it ... and readers similarly opposed will at least consider finding the money to buy it.

I'm one of the last people who thinks teenagers need to be out there fucking "like stoned test bunnies" as some movie says, passing around their STDs and reproducing, and I'm all for telling them not to have sex at all....but most won't listen, and I've seen too many idiots on message boards who don't know the first thing about sex or even how their own bodies work (we're talking the basics of what's normal for a past-puberty body) yet have sex anyway. So I really do wish SOMEONE would tell these kids about sex and contraception--their parents obviously aren't. (but then I think it should be against the law not to have provided your kid with accurate info by the time they're 9 or 10, maybe sooner)

EVERY PERSON who reads this article and these comments deserves MUCH MORE than what is proposed here. Each person is a sacred, embodied soul, infinitely loved by God. After I post this, I'm on my way to close my Bank of America account and tell them that it's b/c B. of A. supports Planned Parenthood. I am only one person, but I will tell all my friends, who will tell their friends.

More powerful than that is the fact that supporters of abortion are killing their own. Google "Roe Effect" and see what you find. Conversely, people who believe in the sanctity of life are having children who grow up to support the same ideals. In illustration, the March for Life (Washington, D.C., January 22 each year) started in the '70's as a bunch of housewives/mothers out to voice their opposition to Roe v. Wade; IN ONE GENERATION, their numbers grew to 150,000 marchers strong, mostly youth.

The pro-life movement strongly believes in sex education, responsibility and the dignity of the human person. I hope you will consider human dignity in your choices.
