Bush: Worst President Ever?

By Stephen Pizzo, News for Real. Posted May 20, 2005.

Herbert Hoover may have triggered the Great Depression, but he didn't invade another nation on false pretenses, authorize torture of prisoners, or try to stack the courts.

For the record, I don't like George Bush. And I don't like most of the people who work for George Bush. So, diehard Republicans can just brush aside my remarks as so much partisan blather.

But by now I suppose very few diehard Republicans ever read what I write. So do me a favor -- e-mail this to the diehards in your family and circle of friends. Ask them to tell me why I am wrong about this:

George Bush is the worst president of the United States of America, ever. Hands down.

And here are just a few reasons why I believe that statement is true.

America the Disgraced

President Bush's actions and policies have destroyed America's image as a nation that adheres to a set of core values, such as the rule of law, humane treatment of prisoners, presumed innocence, trial by jury and respect for international laws.

How do I know this? Because the world is telling us so, whenever we care enough to ask.

Positive views of the U.S. in Russia have risen 11 points in the past year. But U.S. favorability ratings in France and Germany are somewhat lower than last year and there has been a larger decline in Great Britain (58 percent now, 70 percent last year). Young people in Great Britain, France, and Germany have more negative views of America than do people in other age groups.  An important factor in world opinion about America is the perception that the U.S. acts internationally without taking account of the interests of other nations. Large majorities in every nation surveyed believe that America pays little or no attention to their country's interests in making its foreign policy decisions. This opinion is most prevalent in France (84 percent), Turkey (79 percent) and Jordan (77 percent), but even in Great Britain 61 percent say the U.S. pays little or no attention to British interests.

Nice going George. Even Richard Nixon couldn't tarnish America's image that much.

George's Vietnam

Then there's the war that is largely responsible for that drop in our international image. President Bush really screwed this one up. First, everyone not drinking the neocon Kool-Aid tried to warn George not to pull that trigger. Then Army chief of staff, Gen. Shinseki, warned Bush that a war in Iraq would not be the "cake walk" his neocon Rasputin, Paul Wolfowitz, promised. Instead, he warned, we would need a lot of troops in Iraq for long time. For that piece of advice he was first publicly embarrassed by his boss then shown the door, according to The New York Times:

At a Pentagon news conference neither Mr. Rumsfeld nor Mr. Wolfowitz mentioned Gen. Shinseki, the Army chief of staff, by name. But both men were clearly irritated at the general's suggestion that a post-war Iraq might require many more forces than the 100,000 American troops and the tens of thousands of allied forces that are also expected to join a reconstruction effort.  "The idea that it would take several hundred thousand U.S. forces I think is far off the mark," Mr. Rumsfeld said.

That was 2003. Here's a story from today's paper.

BAGHDAD, Iraq, May 19 - American military commanders in Baghdad and Washington gave a sobering new assessment on Wednesday of the war in Iraq. ... In interviews and briefings this week, some of the generals pulled back from recent suggestions, some by the same officers, that positive trends in Iraq could allow a major draw-down in the 138,000 American troops late this year or early in 2006. One officer suggested Wednesday that American military involvement could last "many years."

Gee. Who saw that coming?

So, thanks to George W. Bush and the handful of Neocon nuts you listen to. Now we are stuck in another Vietnam-type war thousands of miles from home. All the Vietnam trappings are here for anyone who cares to notice -- indigenous insurgents, driven by a fanatical ideology, supported and supplied by "spoiler" nation-states with their own anti-U.S. agendas, thousands of dead civilians, American soldiers dying by the gross week in and week out, with no end in sight.

Nice going, George. Maybe because you skipped out on the Vietnam War you didn't know this could happen. Or maybe you really are as dumb as common road gravel.

Sovietization of America

One of the Republican party's proudest boasts is that Ronald Reagan defeated the Soviet Evil Empire. The irony is they are now recreating pieces of that police state here at home now.

"So, thanks to George W. Bush and the handful of Neocon nuts you listen to. "

I so respect and admire the "compassion" (ha ha ha) and "moderation" of Leftists like the author. They're so profoundly "intellectual" calling people like me "Neocon nuts."

Don't anyone DARE call them a name, for that would be "hateful" and "mean-spirited."

But when Leftists call us "nuts" or "stupid" or "fascists" or "Nazis" or "racists" or "greedy" or "stupid" (did I say "stupid" already?), those aren't "hateful" remarks. No! They're TRUTHFUL !

How do you tell a really good president? Here are a few indicators.

1. He breaks solemn and important campaign promises, like "I promise you a tax cut." Worse than not giving you the "tax cut," he HIKES taxes massively.

2. He breaks solemn campaign promises such as "I will have the most ethical administration in history."

3. He lies pathologically to such an extent that even those of his own party acknowledge it: "Bill Clinton is an unusually good liar, unusually good." - Senator Bob Kerrey, D, Neb

4. He is impeached for perjury and obstruction of justice.

5. He sexually abuses subordinates at will, and when under investigation for such sexual abuse and harassment, is SO intelligent as to continue it, with Kathleen Willey and Monica Lewinski, a woman barely older than his own daughter.

6. He ignores the Rwandan genocide, where Hutus butcher ~800,000 Tutsis.

7. He tells Sudan that he doesn't "have any grounds to hold Osama bin Laden when Sudan offers him to us in 1998.

8. He is a rapist, per Juanita Broaddrick.

9. He vetoes the ban on late term abortions passed by congress and favored overwhelmingly by Americans.
www.abortionno.org (go to photos, page 2, for a view of Leftist "choice" in action)

10. Rapist, serial sexual predator, and "husband" of a lesbian, he is called "intelligent" along with his vice president who flunked out of Vanderbilt Divinity School.

I still think James Buchanan is a worse president -- but it's a lot closer than it was when I first came to that conclusion 2 or 3 years ago. Also, I don't recall seeing a mention of Afghanistan in your piece -- that war, which unlike Iraq was legally and practically justified, is lost, just like Iraq. Just like Buchanan provided hope and encouragement to those who would destroy this country (from the inside) Bush's policies have served as recruiting methods for those who want to destroy the U.S. from the outside. Of course, Buchanan was followed by Lincoln; I don't know who will follow Bush.

Yep, all righties care about is Clinton's blowjobs. Isn't Bush ignoring Darfur? How about what happened the other day in Uzbekistan? I've had the "pleasure" of debating with some righties the past few days, and here is what I learned from them:

1. No innocent Iraqi's have been killed by US forces. They were all terrorists.

2. If you are against the war, you are anti-american, and you WANT to see US soldiers die.

3. Abu Ghraib was grossly exaggerated, and was really no big deal.

4. Newsweek is to blame for all of america's foreign relations problems.

5. Liberals are "self hating jews"

6. The Quran was NOT flushed down the toilet, but it deserves to be.

7. There ARE WMD's in Iraq, they just have not been found yet. Iraq WAS involved with 9/11.

This is the Right. They are stupid.

What everybody tends to forget is that most of the world's debt is in....dollars. The Bushites are not flirting with with stagflation-they are depending on it. Why do you think they keep on refering to those T-bills that are the Social Security Trust funds as "worthless paper"? A few years of 100% inflation and the goverment debt and much of the accumulated trade deficent is gone. The fact that such massive inflation will plunge the entire world into a depression that will make the "great" depression look like a minor blip is irrelevent.

Gee, whiz. Don't forget our tax cuts for the rich and profligate spending which has the national debt at an all time high. Then, there's the little problem with the balance of payments. The approach to bamboozling the public looks like something ripped from Goebbels' agenda.

As far as corruption goes, Grant and Harding were the worst. As far as flaunting the law goes, Nixon was the worst. But W's actions are more insidious than any of these. He wants to undermine rule by all the people, free speech, freedom of religion, equal opportunity for all, an independent press, and checks and balances. He has actually made me ashamed to be an American. Where is FDR when we need him?

Another stain from that "clan" helped him steal the presidency, the sheeple took it,...The coward demmanded lies be fabricated to allow him to start an illegal war, give billions to the company his pet pig Cheney worked for w/o bids, the sheeple took it. he has murdered over 100,000 men women and children using our "fine boys". the sheeple took it. he's gonna stack the courts for his Republican buddies, the sheeple will take it. He'll walk out of the presidency with more millions than he went in with, we'll be a slave class with no where to go, he, like the traitor Reagan will be lauded as a hero by his buddies who own the corporate media, Will literally get away with murder and the sheeple will allow it. So......in closing, SCREW HIM and the American Sheeple! They can both spiral to hell and flames for all I care. They have their pretty little flags and the tombs of their sons and daughters to visit and say,...." They fought and died defending our freedom" NOT!! they fought and died because they were too dumb to question the swine leading em. My "freedom" hasn't a damn thing to do with it.

SHORT ANSWER: Yes.

LONG ANSWER: Yes, he is the worst president ever, having edged out the likes of Buchanan, Harding, Hoover, and Nixon. He and those who installed him in office need to learn to feel shame, and then need to begin to feel it deeply enough to trigger a longing for atonement.

Hey you nut; you're pointing fingers at individual's concerns: one on one type actions. While these instances are surely not okay, pilfering en masse of the SUV-numbed public and global Anti-American sentiment is scary. I hate living without a prudent reserve and to realize that 3/4 of my neighbors carry on "on-empty" as such, suggests that civil war is waiting in the wings. Furthermore, Bush doesn't need to be an overt pervert. A gynegologist/sodomist on staff, exhorting family values recently leaked through the news. De-escalate that commitment to a left or right side and see what it looks like in the middle.

Thank you for a great article. George W Bush is an utterly
worthless individual who needs to be convicted for his crimes against humanity and exiled. His entire administration is in desperate need of similiar punishment.

Is this a bad dream? We no longer have a fourth branch of government to inform us of our corrupt government's activities. Those mindless puppets known collectively as law enforcement obstruct the people's right to protest while religious zealots rewrite the Constitution.

Our nation has become sick and diseased.

When will you people realize that there has never been a president concerned over average Americans problems? This country was founded by rich, white slave owners and land holders, and each generation we're presented with a new set of fat, stupid old white men who think they know exactly what this country needs. Hah! They have never been concerned for the plight of the average joe or jane. Everything they say is lip service or inflammatory rhetoric. They do whatever is possible to keep us riled up and divisive so that we never see the common problems we all have -- Politicians.

It doesn't matter that, Yes, Bush is the worst president in our current history. That's the problem. What's the solution? The liberals, progresses and the Republicans are doing nothing to STOP him. That's the problem. Americans just seem to go along with what ever Bush does. Simply put, America is getting what it deserves. I say, Either Shit (Shut Up) or get off the soap box. Do something, don't talk about it. Barba

since i can't think of any other president that is worse (we've had some terrible ones) then yes, bush is the worst in my opinion. he's been all talk since day one and only takes action when one of his CEO buddies comes up with a new scam to rip off the american public or relieve some other country from it's natural resources. look at who's rewritting our energy policies, health reform, tax reform, bankruptcy reform, and military decisions which seem to be based on corrupt ideological beliefs (under rummie's leadership). can't remember any president that had so many scripted news coferences (that we heard of) and butchered the english language so much. after reading some of the comments under this article, i'm still not surprised of the way some republicans lash back at what seems to be shared by so many. they change the subject and blame someone else like clinton who's become the poster boy for everything that this administration did wrong. before bushco came around, leaders took responsibility and held themsleves accountable. now we have concerted attacks against the public and media, blatant lies, insane spending and borrowing, and an immoral war under the guise of fighting terrorism, which many experts have said is on a major rise since the start of this war. oops, i didn't use a name when i said "experts".

Bush and Ideology

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I thoroughly agree with Stephen Pizzo's contention that Mr. Bush has bottom place sewn up. And this in an era of bad Presidents. In addition to his perfect record of getting it consistently wrong, Mr. Bush and his radically right wing party also adopt Capitalism as dogma, much as the leaders of the Soviet Union adopted Communism as dogma. The only answer to any economic matter is privatization. There are constant references to competition, the market, and especially "the remarkable entrepreneurial spirit" reminiscent of incantations in a church service.

Government decisions are being made for ideological rather than logical reasons. Health care is the prime example. Single payer is not an option (until it happens by merger and acquisition). It costs 1.7 trillion dollars a year, leaves tens of millions of workers uninsured, and represents a crushing burden to manufacturers trying to compete in a world economy. But it is the market economy so it is above reproach or even review. It is an article of faith, not supported by facts, that private entities can do any job better than any government entity.

Economic systems and poltical systems are just tools developed by people to solve human needs. Communism and Republicanism share the failing of deifying an economic system. Now the tool uses us instead of our using it.

Mr. Bush is also repudiating the American Revolution by creating a de facto aristocracy so entrenched and disconnected from the rest of us that it is becoming a hereditary aristocracy, what our Founding Fathers fought against. George Bush has conceded the American Revolution to George III instead of George Washington. This will be the greatest failure or his many great failures, the one that our children's children's children and generations beyond will come to regret.

First of the Worst

Without a doubt Bush is the worst president in any of our lifetimes. Let's not forget for which this man is also responsible:

- 3000 Americans were killed during the most horrendous "terrorist" attack in the history of the world

- He is is funding the build-up of China's military with our hard earned money

- The Mexicanization of our domestic workforce will suppress real wages even more dramatically than what is reported

- Access to the President and the White House has been restricted solely to Republicans

- Traitors who vindictively out CIA agents are allowed to roam freely in the White House (so are gay-prostitute faux reporters)

- God has been turned into a Republican hack who endorses pre-emptive wars and turns a blind eye to the many other atrocities that take place in Republican friendly countries

This part of the article brought a question to mind:

"So, thanks to George W. Bush and the handful of Neocon nuts you listen to..."

At what stage in the total implementation of the PNAC manifesto is it appropriate to stop referring to Bush as a Republican and as the "Neo-con" nutbag that he really is? To me John Kerry should have hammered this home like beating a red headed bastard step child.

I don't know if anyone else caught John Batchelor on C-Span's WJ this AM, but it was one of the scariest displays of elitist neo-con ideology I have ever seen on TV. The information he held (lkely from the AEI he loves) and refused to share with us and would make us all understand if he only had the balls to reveal it, was flippantly withheld since the great uninformed apparently just can't handle the truth. The highlight was his claim that he knew to where Saddam's WMD were moved before we able to find them. Maybe one of his neo-con contacts should have provided Bathcelor with Duelfer's phone number? Unlisted, I imagine.

What could be worst than President Nutbag and his merry band of Idealogical Nutbag Marauders? Why of course it is Bill Clinton and his moderate style of triangulating us through the most prosperous decade in our country's history - Jackasses!

Keep in mind that the Iranians have been trying, for a few years now, to setup oil markets based on the Euro and not the petro-dollar which would be utterly disasterous for our economy. In addition China appears to be aware of how we use inflation and valuation of currency as a weapon and have refused to acquiesce to our demand that they revaluate their currency in a way that would allow us to put them in an economic headlock. These are certainly heady times we live in and it seems this ship of fools is about to run aground.

Baby Bush is a terrible president, maybe worse than Buchanan, but before you label him the worst in our lifetime take a long look back at the Teflon President Ronnie Reagan. Rather than being the worst of the worst, Baby Bush is just following in the footsteps of his mentor who deserves the title, "the worst", for the way he moved this country from one having some morals to one having nothing but the 10 commandments and concern about what's between the hips and the knees.

IN 1868, E.G. ROSS, A REPUBLICAN SENATOR FROM KANSAS CAST THE DECIDING VOTE IN THE IMPREACHMENT TRIAL OF PRESIDENT ANDREW JOHNSON. AS A RADICAL REPUBLICAN, ROSS HATED JOHNSON AND THOUGHT OF HIM AS A TERRIBLE PRESIDENT. ROSS WAS PROMISED ALMOST ANYTHING TO VOTE GUILTY. HIS FUTURE WOULD HAVE BEEN ASSURED. SO, WHY DID HE VOTE INNOCENT? ROSS REPLIED THAT HE PUT THE FUTURE OF THE REPUBLIC FIRST. AFTER THE VOTE, HE LOST EVERYTHING AND MOVED HIS FAMILY TO THE NEW MEXICO TERRITORY. WHY IS THIS STORY IMPORTANT TODAY? BECAUSE IN PRESIDENT BUSH, THE AMERICAN PEOPLE HAVE SOMEONE WHO HAS LOST SIGHT OF THE FUTURE. BUSH STILL MIGHT LEAVE THE PRESIDENCY WITH LITTLE DAMAGE DONE. BUT, HE DEFINITELY IS LEAVING US A VERY CLOUDED TOMORROW. FOR ME, I LONG FOR AN EDMUND G. ROSS.

This isn't between dems or repubs. This is between right and wrong. Everything the bush has done for??? america is just plain wrong. I've tried to think of one thing the bush has done for AMERICANS and couldn't. Do you actually feel safer with the bush in control? What? safer? Because of the bush??? I get it...it's a joke!
One thing that seems to have evaporated in america in this new century is common sense! I just don't see it and have many examples to prove it like ignoring scientific data from expererts on global warming. Like the neocons following an idiot because he claims to be christian. I saw through his bushit durring the first presidential race betwee the bush and Gore. I investigated the bush via the world wide web unlike many americans on how he preformed durring the bushs governmental post as gov of texas. Texas by the way is still recovering from his tenure in that post. His plan for revising the educational system in tex was the RAND PLAN! His plan if implemented would have allowed students who failed an exam to retake the same test over again till the student passed. Is this a no brainer or what? Not a different exam but the same test.

Wrong. He raised taxes on the top 1% only; the other 99% he gave an effective tax CUT to by increasing the Earned Income Credit (plus broadening it to include people who don't have children. He also increased various other credits which amounted to tax cuts for the poor and middle class. Further, the tax increase on the top 1% was only from 36% to 39.6%; to whom is a 3.6 percent increase 'massive'?
Not anyone I know (or have even heard of, besides you.).

2. He breaks solemn campaign promises such as "I will have the most ethical administration in history."

Wrong. Only one person indicted in all eight years (no conviction) only one person jailed (Susan McDougall), and that for refusing to lie under oath. All investigations of scandals - 7 years and 70 million dollars worth - found nothing. Not a thing.
Since 100% is as high as you can go, it would make his the most ethical.

3. He lies pathologically to such an extent that even those of his own party acknowledge it: "Bill Clinton is an unusually good liar, unusually good." - Senator Bob Kerrey, D, Neb

Wrong. Clinton didn't lie even once. The definition of 'sexual relations' provided by Congress, the grand jury, and the judges involved did not include anything he did with Ms. Lewinsky. (I notice you didn't provide a link to your quote, so - since you knew you'd be called on it, and therefore would have a link to forestall criticism - I presume it to be a phony.)

4. He is impeached for perjury and obstruction of justice.

Immaterial. Said charges were found to be without merit and motivated by sheer partisan rancor.

5. He sexually abuses subordinates at will, and when under investigation for such sexual abuse and harassment, is SO intelligent as to continue it, with Kathleen Willey and Monica Lewinski, a woman barely older than his own daughter.

Wrong. Kathleen Willey - no evidence found. Monica Lewinsky - consensual affair which SHE initiated.

Refuting false wingnut Clinton claims above - Pt 2

6. He ignores the Rwandan genocide, where Hutus butcher ~800,000 Tutsis.
Wrong. Clinton and the rest of the world did, in all fairness, take so long to decide what to do that action became moot, but they did NOT 'ignore' it. This WAS, however, ignored by the vast majority of Republicans, who were too busy pursuing false charges against Clinton to be bothered to even think about it.

7. He tells Sudan that he doesn't "have any grounds to hold Osama bin Laden when Sudan offers him to us in 1998.

Wrong. This a phony story from a single Sudanese individual who now works for Fox News (which should tell you something about his credibility, i.e. that he has none). ALL investigations of this 'offer' have found that it never occurred (9/11 Commission Report, etc.).

8. He is a rapist, per Juanita Broaddrick.
Wrong. No evidence. False charge. Dismissed.

9. He vetoes the ban on late term abortions passed by congress and favored overwhelmingly by Americans.

Wrong. The bill contained no exception for the life and health of the mother; a bill without such an exception was NOT supported 'overwhemingly' , or by even a majority of Americans.

10. Rapist, serial sexual predator, and "husband" of a lesbian

Wrong. All investigations showed no evidence of rape of anyone, no sexual predation (two consensual affairs in 30 years is not this by any stretch of the imagination; Paula Jones case, for example found to be based on false and bribed testimony). No evidence Hillary Clinton is a lesbian (I notice you didn't provide any, where is it, hmm?); this is a common charge weak and insecure men level at a strong and capable woman, due to the fact that they feel threatened by such.

You're 0 for 10. Care to add ten more? You could make it 0 for 20! Judging by your post, in the wingnut universe which you apparently inhabit, that's a perfect score! Congratulations!

Sergei Rostov

Right wing globalization, aggression and nihilism, again. They don’t just hate “other people” they loath themselves with surrogates.

Sometimes things have to get worse in order to then get better. Right wing expenditures and decisions have been enormously expensive, while being a boon to nothing more than militarily minded folk like Uzbekistani tyrants and worse – Historically “Great ideologues” all, eventually wind up trying to kill everyone along with themselves (repeatedly). For that reason, today, the world is well spent to be focused on the severely conflicting ideologies and actions of the right. They are obviously going through a lot more changes than they can possibly deal with, hence their nihilism.

Yes, George Bush is the worst president, hands down. I marched with millions of others around the world to prevent this war. It was so obvious. Now I think the only thing that will save America is a drastic oil price increase. That will get everyone's attention and put us to work doing what we should have been doing all this time - developing alternate energies for ourselves and the world. Remember that saying, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself"? It is time to claim our freedom as a species.

If public demonstrations are to take place against George W. Bush and his band of right wing nut cases, a few with leadership qualities, who truly believe in changing the government as it now stands, will have to come out of the closet in order to successfully engage the masses of this country's brainwashed population and truly make a difference in its outcome.

I would like to say kudos to the article on Bush being the worst president ever. The list goes on and on and should include his myopic views on cloning research.

The advances in cloning by S. Korea amd Great Britain are exciting events in the field of medicine.

When the president, through the veto power he bragged about using today should any cloning researech bill reach his desk, can take the US out of the search for stem cell advances to possibly cure spinal cord injuries, heart disease and the countless other disabilities and afflicitions of our society, it is a sad day.

The president's comments that he opposes "destroying life" in order to create it shows just how Neanderthal his thinking really is. The one good point in this, but what a price for mankind to pay, is there will never be another Dubya Bush!

Most politicians are somewhat narcissistic and have tendencies towards megalomania - those often are the characteristics that make them want to be politicians. What makes Bush so much worse is that he is also a Psychopath who also has an Anti-social Personality Disorder.

Psychopath: lack of empathy, glib and superficial charm, egocentricity, inflated sense of self worth, emotional unresponsiveness, irresponsibility in interpersonal relationships, poor judgment, failure to learn from experience, deceitfulness, and impulsive behavior

combined with

Anti-social personality: failure to conform to social norms, deceitfulness, impulsivity or failure to plan ahead, irritability and aggressiveness, reckless disregard for the safety of self or others, irresponsibility, and lack of remorse.

Psychopaths only learn from mistakes/punishment if punishment is something that matters to them (i.e. loss of money) and all of their attention can be focused on the consequences of their behavior. Therefore, impeachment of George W. Bush combined with his imprisonment and trail for war crimes (isolate him from any information except as related to his trial) are not only the best thing for American; they are the most compassionate treatment for GWB's mental illness!

I can't see anyone coming out of the pack to be the next leader for the left so brace yourself for a few more year of neo-con politic.
The longer it take to have a significant change the worst the backlash will be and if it take to much time usually those backlash are getting very ugly.

What planet do you live on? Bush: very good President

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
We have had many failed presidents, from Buchanan to Carter. You are not arguing that W is a failure. Rather, he is an effective president, pursuing a war you do not like. From your angle, the President he is most like is Polk, the architect of the Mexican-American War, which I assume you also oppose.

America the disgraced. You say that the WHOLE WORLD says how awful we now are.

You do not cite opinion from every part of the world. You only cite opinion from Western Europe. (Turkey is as far as you go.)

What, South America is not part of the world? Africa is not on the planet? Asia does not exist?

Second, how have we disgraced ourselves? We overthrew Saddam Hussein, who, I assume, even you will admit was a pretty bad guy. We brought an election to a people who had not known one for fifty years.

Overthrowing tyrants is disgraceful? Spreading democracy is disgraceful?

Was World War Two disgraceful? Was it horrible to overthrow Hitler? Alot of civilians were killed in that war.

So why is not FDR a horrible President? He sided with Britain, while pretending to be neutral. He used guile to make sure we got into a war with Germany, which we could have avoided.

Sovietization of America.

Earth to Steve. How has your life changed, due to W? Can you point to any real people who have unjustly been arrested under the Patriot Act?

Peasantization of Workers

All of the trends that you are talking about have existed under EVERY president in the last thirty years. So, why is any of this the fault of W?

Christian Jihadists

What protects religious freedom in America is that we have many religions. Christianity is split between Catholics and Protestants; Protestants are split into many sects. We have Jews, Muslims and Mormons. None agree with each other. None has a majority. Thus, the chance of religious tyranny in this country is, and always has been, zero. The idea that there would be a Christian jihad pre-supposes that Christians are unified and are seeking some kind of common agenda. Not on this planet,Steve.

You conclude by saying that the question is,are there enough people who give a damm. No, the question is, why does it cause you pain to see tyrants overthrown? Why do you see no good, in the spread of democracy?

It's interesting that all ills of the Liberals/Left are attributed to Bill Clinton. Though I agree he is not a perfect human being (and give me a break about that lesbian -Hillary crap-if it is true what's it to you?)Welfare to Work was a terrible program and Bill was a political smoozer-at that , he was not an enemy of the working poor and middle class like Bush and his cronies.
Bush is so clearly aligned with big business and "the haves" he willing dished out a tax cut to the wealthiest Americans during a war time (unprecedented in our history)
He looks the other way as pensions are gutted and Corporations plunder their workers(note
United airlines pension plans under siege while their CEO made over 1 million dollars last year) There is something morally wrong when the people who make the corporations rich -the workers- have their wages fall as all other expenses in their world go up. Wages are at a historic low- Unions are fighting for the right to organize- So not only does our esteemed emperor allow the gutting of work pensions he is attempting to plunder Social Security. It is increasingly common for working people to have no heallth care, retirement benefits and get in line at the food bank at the end of the month. Fair HUH?
If people are poor enough they will be forced into servitude for whatever meager wages the wealthy see fit to offer. (Remember the Robber Barrens ) Perhaps a good old fasioned Revolution is in order to level the playing field again. As far as the Neocons go and their pledge to return the world to the stone ages and monitor the world's morals-there are an awful lots of bones in their closets that are likely to fall out at any moment. Since the end of the world is what they are seeking -Rapture-we can only hope they get their wish and rapture away and leave us all in peace.

I know. So few words, so many disasters. But here's a few more. The destruction of pensions, many of which are underfunded and have seen workers lose them in bankruptcy. With the Federal government picking up some of workers losses. aonly the attempt to privatize Social Security tops this retirement fiasco.

Abject failure of an AWOL energy program, leaving the US economy in worse position than any major economy in terms of the impending peak oil crunch. SUVs+no conservation plan+not investing in alternative energy=We're screwed

Oh yes. Ignoring global warming and widespread environmental degradation. Another place where the US is dead last in terms of being prepared for the future. But W. is making sure that corporations are less liable for their environmental and safety flaws.

Given that you helped point out the banking deregulation scam, I'll cut you some slack.

Why does the left always get sucked into Clinton versus Bush arguments. When you contribute to these conversations the Right wins every time. Why? Because Clinton is not on the Left, he is probably in the center. By claiming Clinton is on the Left you encouraging others to think of Clinton's policies as Leftist (many were not).

Yes. The right has been overzealous in their hate of Clinton, but they do have some valid points about him. Unfortunately, most people don't keep their mind's open enough to be critical of their "beloved" leaders.

In sum, Clinton versus Bush is like center versus far-right. If we want to make a change, we have to forget about Clinton. Let's see some Delay vs. Kucinich arguments; those would be much more productive as it much more fairly represents the left and the right.

Bush a 'Dry Drunk"

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Remember the pschiatrist who wrote "Bush on the Couch"...describing the shrub as a dry drunk who got sober at 40 and got religion. He never has had any recovery program going on, be it 12 step or anything else, just jihadi christianity because he knew it would buy him the necessary credibility as a political candidate in Texas. Because, even though his father was accomplished and intelligent, the shrub only knew how to get stoned, party on, bullshit and run companies into the ground and get bailed out by others. Oh, he also knew how to cheat the SEC with insider trading and make himself millions richer. By the way, Molly Ivins, today on the NOW program on PBS, describes Texas as a combination of theocracy and plutocracy, much thanks to the Bush cartel there. That's what we can look forward to at the national level. Bush will do to the country what he 'did' to Texas, making us into a sharecropper country that will be hated globally as an outlaw nation. That's our dry drunk prez for ya...white knuckling it all the way, at our expense and might I say, all the world. He IS the worst president, EVER! He would be absolutely clownish if he weren't so dangerous. The world is INCREDULOUS that 59 million people CAN BE SO DUMB, as a British paper's headline appeared after our election. They understand that once, maybe we didn't understand this radical cabal that hijacked our country. But the second time!! Now many out there feel we deserve whatever we get because we (not me)brought this criminal gang back again. The real danger is the cluelessness of this admin. I don't really think they understand the degree to which we are hated and considered a pariah in the int'l. community. Let's not worry, though. We've got Condo-LIES A LOT-Rice on the world stage. Isn't it curious that during her shameful tenure at NSC, we never saw her smile once, but now that she got her sought after promotion to the world stage, she's lapping up what she construes as adoration, and now we see her non-stop smiling in this job, even when it's inappropriate. She can't help herself, she's so glad to be jet-setting all over...and wherever she goes, Latin America, Europe, Middle East, they ARE NOT ON BOARD with her agenda. Hurray for that! The world is rejecting the Bush cartel's agenda, almost everywhere they go. When will Americans wake up from their coma and pay attention like the rest of the world does?!

Bush is BY FAR
the worst president of all time....
Just ask your self one question,
Is this country more united or divided
that at any other time in our nations history?
Do you remember how united we were after 9-11?
Didn't take long to piss that all away.
And whose doorstep do we lay the blame on?
Certainly not the democrats.
WE are more broke, more hated, more divided,
more on the precipice of disaster than at any other
time in our wonderful nation's history.
Just who exactly is responsible?
I feel like a son who continually watches his beautiful
mother get beaten up and abused.
One day I will grow strong, and kick that fucker
out of our house for good.
I just hope that we can walk away from it at that point.
God Bless America, because we need it now
more than ever...

Now that I've read the article and every post thereafter - including the jerk-off who posted near the beginning - who, by the way, has been posting on most of the articles of this nature. But, only once. One post, where he'll bring up some crap about Clinton, completely avoiding the basis of the articles he's posting about. He lives in a world where if you don't acknowledge the truth, then it doesn't exist. He doesn't bother to respond to anyone (I've tried every time he's posted) because he knows he's full of shit. It's all to get everyone riled up, read any of his posts, and you'll see he has nothing intelligent to say. So, most are in agreeance that Bush is the #1 worst president ever, so, now what? I'm ready to impeach. I was ready after he stole the first election. So, when's the protest? Where will they occur? People are writing that the only thing left for us to do is take to the streets, so, LET'S GO! This man needs to get the boot - Texas style, since he's soooo proud of being a Texan (even though he spent more time in private schools then he did growing up in Texas). What we need now is organization. Protests so big, it'll make pre-Iraq and Vietnam look like a weekend bake sale. I don't doubt that we have the numbers needed for such an event. But, where do we begin? All these "liberal" organizations, and no one calling for a nationwide protest to demand impeachment? If there is, please, tell me. As one of thousands of MoveOn members, I have yet to receive any e-mail about the UK memo, what the hell? Everyday, I read on Alternet, I post, I pass on the articles to anyone I think will read them. I write my elected officials, sign impeachment petitions, etc. All because I feel powerless to do anything else. To protest our government is our right, one we'll lose along with the rest if we don't get our asses out there and do something about it. So, what organization do we look to for help in organizing such an event? Any suggestions?

Forget Hoover... Bush Puts Grant and Harding To Shame.

Most people on the Left and the Right look at history with very dark sunglasses and fail to see things like context and motivation. There is no doubt that Hoover's continuation of Coolidge's laissez faire economic principles was an important factor in the later implosion of the American economy. Closer examination of his life and record as president paints a picture of a more complex man in the wrong place at the wrong time, not unlike Carter.

I always thought that the Bush Administration probably resembled those of Grant and Harding, two administrations noted for the vast amount of cronyism and corruption above and beyond all others. George W. Bush leaves them all in the dust.

Aside from everything else that has been said here, historians will later on take a close look at his policies and how truly dangerous they were to the world. Hopefully, they will also scrutinize what was the supreme crime of our time... that which enabled our decent into hell and the deaths of thousands all around the world (re: Afghanistan, Iraq, Haiti, et al.) I am talking about 9-11 and the role the Bush Adminstration played. Historians will ignore the words "conspiracy theory" and synthesize all the evidence that has existed since the very Day of Infamy. Hopefully, when this day comes, Bush will take his place in the only Hall of Shame fit for him: federal prison.

Good article, but control the debate (Clinton post)

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
We lose credibility and control of the debate when we simply state "Worst President Ever." If you add perspective: "Worst president since Wilson," or "Worse than Grant," you control the debate. If you educate yourself about the president you use, you will undoubtedly have more facts than the Bush supporter you are debating. When they say, "what about Clinton," you can answer "I'm not talking about Clinton, I'm talking about Bush and Wilson." Introduce historical perspective to those blinded by W's Straussist views and religious facade, and control the debate by injecting someone like Wilson into the equasion. (I like Wilson because there are many similarities between the two.)

Wilson's Presidency:

*) Propagated hate toward "darkies" (as he called them in his cabinet meetings.) and Segregated the executve branch after failing to get support to re-segregate the whole government.

*) Got re-elected with Anti-War slogan, then asked congress to declare war in Europe. (Bush 2000: "I don't think our troops should be used for nation building") Re-elected wth only 40% of the vote.

*) Invaded Haiti and used US military to back program of forced labor on Haitians. Marine General George Barnett complained "Practically indiscriminate killing of natives has gone on for some time." (Sound familiar)

*) Tried with Japan to invade Russia in the first US war ordered solely by the executive branch, without congress. Event later helped fuel the cold war.

*) Invaded Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Mexico, and Nicaragua, installed puppet governments, and set the stage for dictators Batista, Trujillo, the Duvaliers, and the Comozas.

*) Created the Federal Reserve

*) Wilson: "My life would not be worth living if it were not for the driving power of religion." (Sound familiar)

*) Backed "Pancho" Villa in Mexico. Then later, when Villa attacked New Mexico in a German financed attempt to provoke the US into attacking Mexico, Wilson sent 100,000 troops into Mexico to find the "bandit" Villa. Villa's men were rallied by an incident in El Paso where US athorities had captured 20 Mexicans, soaked them in kerosene, and lit them on fire. Villa was never captured by the US troops.

We need to keep shouting it from the rafters, and you did an eloquent job of it. Before Dubya, I believed that Ronald Reagan was the worst president in our history, but not even Reagan consolidated power at the financial/corporate "top" as effectively as this idiot, or stiffeled all disenting voices with such frightening efficiency. I agree that "taking to the streets" again will probably be necessary, but I wonder where we will find those with the courage to do so. So much is different than in the 60's & early 70's. Police may have been Pigs then, but now they're Storm Troopers. As far as wev'e come regarding civil rights for minotity's - which is still not far enough - we've actually lost civil rights ground in most areas, especially areas related to street protest. I was out there in the 60's, too young to be really afraid. Most state sanctioned violence was reserved for minority protests & I was lucky enough to be white & middle class. Then came Kent State, & we all became targets. Today, anyone who disents is a target, & we have draconian laws to use against all voices of protest that have never before been seen in this country. This time, we may need a miracle - & not the Bushie right-wing Christian variety.

In all actuallity, Hoover didn't really start the Great Depression, he just didn't do anything to stop it. What DID begin the depression, however, was the following:
1. An uneven distribution of wealth: The rich were only getting richer and there was not enough perchasing power for the lower class to do anything but get poorer.
2. Massive use of credit: Credit was a new thing in the 1920s and everyone used it. However, this excessive use of credit created an instability in the American economy.
3. Over-production of consumer goods: Simply stated, companies produced far more goods than needed and after creating a new model of an old product, there was too much of the old product in stock.

Of course, there are several other reasons including speculation of the stock market and the reports of negative earnings from G.M. .... However, many of the reasons sound very similar to what is happening now in our country, based on this article, especially the excessive use of credit and the uneven distribution of wealth.

Hoover on the other hand believed in "rugged individualism" much like most of the rest of the Republican Party of the early 20th century. He believed that the crisis of the stock market crash was too large for government intervention and that help should come from private charitites. He even introduced a 60% protective tariff which only made things worse.

This isn't about Hoover though, and if you feel that this comment was inappropriate, I'm sorry.

To Mendomama, I agree with you 100%, lets stop complaining and join forces to do something about this mess
we find ourselves in! It is time to have our voices heard!
I respect the people in the Ukraine who came out in large
numbers and were heard! However the media in the
United State of America infringe each and every time with
our rights to congregate, our freedom of speech by low
keying any and all demonstrations! More of the Ukraine
demonstrations were reported in "our" media than any of our
own! Well any future demonstrations have to be so large in
number...they can't afford not to report on them! It is time
for all the "talkers" to move and get rid of the "disease" that
has invaded our country!! The corrupt Congress should be
the first to go!! Lets truly make this administration a "Lame
Duck," and then finally get rid of them! America belongs to
"We The People," not the coporate moguls, who are outsourcing our jobs, bringing in illegal, irrelevant aliens who
work for low wages (but also pay less taxes). What is the
future for us? We will be slaves for the COPORATE MOGULS
and THE GOVERNMENT, we can say goodbye to our freedom,
liberty and our voice...we will no longer be a governemnt for
"We The People" ...we will only be sheep, doing whatever
the government dictates to us!! Lets go...before it is too late,
we are in our last days as we waste time talking about it!!!

"Clinton sucks" does NOT mean "Bush isn't worse"

You post 10 very valid reasons why Clinton sucks, and I won't debate that fact, I'll even add another point, what Clinton did in Kosovo was not exactly far from genocide.

But the fact that his predecessor sucked too doesn't make Bush any better.

Clinton did not destroy the constitution. Bush did (read the Patriot Act for details).

Clinton did not start a war based on lies and lies only. Kosovo was wrong, but nowhere near as wrong as what Bush did to Iraq.

Clinton did not torture prisoners.

Clinton did not defame Christianity by claiming to be a devout follower of Jesus, but modifying everything Christianity stands for ("Thou shalt not kill, unless the person thou killest happens to be Arabic", "Thou shalt not lie, unless thy lies help starting an unjust war")

And most of all, Clinton did not launch a terrorist strike on his own ground as an excuse to dismantle the constitution and declare wars on anybody opposing him. You still think 9/11 was the work of some Arabic terrorists? Then please explain any of the following:

Saying "Clinton sucks, so Bush isn't bad" is A LOT like saying "Bush is a war criminal, therefore Hitler can't be one" -- a rather strange "logic".

You've missed a very important point that a few of the comments have only hinted at. THERE IS NO LEFT OR RIGHT!
None of it is real. There are NO Republicans or Democrats, NO Liberals or Conservatives. It's a sham, a phony front perpetrated upon the masses by a corrupt group of men. It's a tool to keep the people divided so that nobody ever really sees what's going on around them. IT'S TIME TO STOP DREAMING AMERICA! IT'S TIME TO WAKE UP AND TAKE BACK THE COUNTRY THAT'S BEING SLOWLY SIPHONED AWAY FROM RIGHT UNDER US! Re-examine your minds. Reclaim your own identity as a people. And for the sake of humanity, truly think for yourselves and drop the "party line".

I propose we begin a new campaign the message is this, "A vote with Republicans is a vote against the People!" You think the faith-based organizations have a long memory you had better think again, we remember who sent our sons and daughters to the slaughter and you will not get the opportunity to do it again. If you don't start doing what we sent you there to do, you can come home! You know who you are and so do we................

Bush is bad...

...but Pierce and Buchanan are worse. They didn't do very much as our country marched toward the Civil War.

Bush did not single-handedly decimate American unions. Their power has been weakening over decades under both Democratic and Republican administrations.

Bush is partially responsible for the economy, but he did not create outsourcing, the corporate scandals, or the stock market bubble that burst in 2000. No private sector jobs in four years is bad, but ask a survivor of the Great Depression if the economy in 2003 was remotely comparable to that of 1933.

Our country's problems are a lot bigger than one man, and the solutions will not come simply by his leaving the Oval Office in 2009.

Very good ideas...we definetly should go after the "News"
stations cbs, nbc, abc and most assuredly FOX 5!
Your right...write our elected officals (which I have done) and
call them on the phone give our opinions on all issues.
We should have never let the Patriot Act 2 pass! Eventually
they will have to pay attention. They have to know the polls
show their approval rating lower than Bush's, they are down
to 39%. They are not paying attention...after all the noise
they were making (Democrats) they compromised!! Lets
see what happens with Bolton's appointment! I really feel
the Democrats are just putting on a show...as I said "ALL
THEIR FINGERS are in the pie", did I call it a Dog and Pony
show...well I change that ... it's " A Dog and Phony Show!"

Let's let them hear us, I am passing your ideas on...very good!!

It's a shame, the worst president of the United States got reelected! Damn!He fooled the American public twice! Oh! Dear Me! He was selected once, elected once. Please pardon me. If George Bush is such a bad President-then why don't the LIBERALS in the House of Rep bring charges against him for ALL of his misdeeds!!! By the way, you can tell how the President will react to MORAL issues of the day by believing what He says. He does not try to DAZZLE YOU WITH HIS BRILLANCE OR BAFFLE YOU WITH BULLSHIT. The opposite of the previous sentence can be applied to many of the Presidents I have seen and heard in my lifetime. thank you, John Snyder.

One clinton has sold lots of usa weapons to china and pocketed the money which usa taxpayers pay
the chinese say bill may cost alot but he delivers primo stuff
yes i dissagree with alot of things bush has done but he actually tells china nkorea that he wont be blackmailed
Iraq is not illegal veitnam was not illegal
but all wars are illegal even the one we are in now
you cannot justify war with resolutions 19843298
un hahaha ok i made the number up
but no one sees what the other countrys do you only see what usa has done its time to stop worrying about what usa has done wrong what once are twice in return we were actually freinds with Veitnam Ho chi minh
but france wanted to change that and they did
ther goes the us veitnam war
you need to stop watching fox news and do your history
and iraq war you keep talking about germany france etc
well if they were so agaisnt it why is france the biggest Air force in iraq now
and germany the biggest supplyer of artilery and tanks????
and truthfully Nixon was not a bad president under the cirumstances he had you think being the leader of us is so easy well its not your put into the seat of someone else`s war thats like putting you in mexico and say run for mayor
your going a littel bit far saying us is turning into nazi germany and soviet russia
patriot act britain has done this a long time ago put cameras ontop of telephone post etc
mabe they are trying to do something for the terroist and other enemy nations
no wmds you say yes there were us gave it to them you cannot get rid of Chemical filled war heads very easily
they either have to be move to another country
which us has found documents not efficent enough to reveal to the press that spetnaz had moved them to liby and syria borders
that is why colinpowell left but hey what do i know im just the soldier that found the russian documents written in arabic and one in russian our worst president is bill clinton he drove the us economy into the ground and wat bush is trying to salvage you all try to put him down but do your math and economy tracking the us economy has gone up alot since bill left

I loved the article.
It's quite the enigma how aggressively ignorant the Bush supporters are. These are the people who defy all reason and seek out self and economic destruction. I know several of them quite well. They are somehow brainwashed into supporting the idiot in office today, but hate with a passion the former president. Unfortunately they may not see the light until it is way too late, when they have no means to retire, or anything to retire to.
With all the facts about the failures and lies of the current president, how can any person with any measureable intelligence whatsoever support the guy? It's almost like Bush has some sort of satanic spell on his followers; it's the only explanation.

The Bush apologists need to read up on Bush's pre wing sprouting days. The whole Bush family are pro abortion. HW and W just changed to kiss up to the "Christians" Hasn't anyone else noticed how carefully Dubya parses his words about abortion? He mugwumps it {his mug is on one side of the fence and his wump is on the other}He out and out lied about his drunk days when a reporter asked at the beginning of the 2000 campaign if he had ever been arrested for DWI and Bush answered no. The next time Karen Hughes answered no saving W from another lie. It turned out he was arrested and fined in Kennebunk Port. Remember recently when much was made of Bush's name being drawn to serve on a jury? He was let off easy, it would have been very embarrassing to have him ineligabe because of a DWI and of course our bootlicking 98% owned Republican press never opened their yap. Bush should be impeached or whatever is done to a usuper. He is a disgrace and a shame to the country
